After deciding to upgrade my trusty ageing Touareg that has served my family faithfully over 12 years, I began researching and test-driving suitable replacements since the start of the year. After a few months of anticipation, I was finally able to take the 300 VX for a test drive a few weeks ago. I was impressed with the power, drive quality and, surprisingly, the appealing sound of the V6 engine. It certainly seemed to drive much better than the outgoing 200 series Sahara that I test drove a few weeks earlier. I was seriously tempted to lay my $2,500 deposit down there and then to secure my car for delivery some unknown time in the future… but there were some niggles that got me to reconsider. The niggles included: 1. The rather cluttered, busy array of buttons and ‘stuff’ on the dashboard 2. The cramped third row seats that are cumbersome to operate 3. The synthetic rather than real leather, despite the salesman trying to convince me it was real leather (I accept synthetic is better for the environment but hey, you can’t beat the smell and feel of real leather!) 4. The absence of the split tailgate, which I thought was a nice touch in the 200 series 5. No electric tailgate 6. No memory seating Individually these niggles aren’t that bad but when you add them up, along with the fact you can’t customise to add 1-2 bits, it proved for me to be a deal-breaker. I thought that shelling out $125k (inc ORC) for a car would’ve included at least an electric tailgate, but I was wrong. It was a shame that Toyota didn’t include some simple features such as electric tailgate or memory seating on the pricey VX model that seems to be standard for most other (and much cheaper) vehicles. What’s worse is that you have to pay $18k more to get them in the next level Sahara, as they aren’t even offered as an option. The day after I took the VX for a test drive, I took a slightly used Range Rover Vogue for a run, and boy what a difference a day makes! I’m now a proud new owner of a totally different class of vehicle that has all the features I was looking for and more… but that’s another story.
Spot on mate! Toyota has been ripping off people for years by selling their under equipped vehicles on the reliability badge but not it seems that people are catching on. Their vehicles aren't as reliable as made out to be and their pricing is just absurd.
You’re forgetting the ridiculous softness test on the materials and showing the back of the key and the chatting about the badging etc. Those things aside it’s pretty good.
My Sahara is parked in my garage for almost two weeks still learning new features. If you want to compare VX with Sahara, here are the features Sahara have VX don’t have: Power-folding 3rd row, heated and ventilated 2nd row outer seats, driver’s seat memory 3 memory settings, sequential turn signals (front and rear), chrome accented exterior door mirrors and door handles, power back door, leather accented seats, heated steering wheel, rear footwell illuminated entry lighting, cool box, driver and passenger seat back pockets hard backed, 14-speaker JBL premium audio, head-Up display and dual rear seat entertainment with (headphones not included). To be honesty the new Landcruiser is better than the older one: more power, more torque, it is quicker, beautiful design, technology and safety. Thank you, Paul. You have done excellent job on VX.

And 3rd row needs to be fold unfold manually, this is not family friendly. I probably keep waiting my prado vx.
300 series looks nice as hell, price-wise going to stick with my Prado. The Kakadu has enough for what I need. Only two things, the 6-month service is fine, better to over service than under service, and it also catches those who offroad in small doses. Prado has a 6-month service and it's nothing. Second in terms of hydraulics in the steering and brakes. Glad Toyota made the sensible long term choice and did not go electric. It might be fine in a brand new car, but give it a decade, with wear and tear, and if you lose hydraulics you can still steer and brake the car safely (just with a ton of muscle). Toyota relies on the fact there will be a million 300 series putting around in a few decades.
Our range toppers here in South Africa are the ZX and GR-S, available with the 3.3 V6 and 3.5 V6. Those are the only ones I would consider buying, but their prices are between R1 760 000ZAR and R1 850 000ZAR, which is between $160 000AUD and $170 000AUD, with the 3.5 V6 models being the more expensive ones. I would love a GR-S with the 3.5 V6, but I can't see myself ever paying that kind of money for one. I'm currently in the process of buying a Hilux Legend, it's very similar to the Hilux Rogue in Australia, and that's almost half the price of the cheapest 300 series we have available here, which is the GX-R for around R 1 285 000ZAR or around $118 000AUD. Just wish Toyota could hurry up and get some stock since I've been waiting just over 6 months for my Hilux, but apparently things are looking good for the end of this month.

Love the detailed review. As a long term Cruiser fan, can't believe they've gone full Toorak Tractor dropping the split tail gate, sliding middle seat and made the rear row truly occasional seats. With 4 fast growing kids the 300 is officially not practical for large family trips and the 200 is staying right where it is.

Best review I’ve seen to date thanks. With a 2019 Sahara 200, I’m going to give it a couple more years to see what the facelift model introduces across the range, but I think Toyota really missed the mark by not having the 2nd row fold flat to create a huge sleeping platform, and the loss of the tailgate will keep the aftermarket busy no doubt. Those are AT tyres? If it wasn't pointed out that they're AT Tyres, I would have thought they're HT Tyres. They are the mildest tread pattern I've seen on AT Tyres.
Saw a white upper spec on the roads in Brisbane last week near Toowong. Looked very impressive and the dynamic indicators on the back really added to the overall look.
Hi Paul, Another great review. I like what Toyota have done but agree that the VX should have a few more standard features thrown in, diff lock and definitely a power tail gate. I noticed that there was a considerable fluctuation on the oil gauge from idle to increasing revs. Seemed a bit odd, anyone else notice that? From the rear, it reminds me of the current Patrol. Be interesting to see how this new engine performs when run in and it's reliability. Cheers.
I saw that oil gauge movement. I'd say it's more to do with the oil moving rearwards in the sump with the initial acceleration. Then slowly creeping back to level.
Awesome review Paul! Thanks. I’d love to see a review on the GX. Looks to be good value for money now, particularly if you want to chop one or use around a farm.
I think you haven’t looked at any other vehicle for value. $90k for basic land cruiser, how’s that value? But you do decade old technology from Europe. Stay with 79 for farm vehicle. Toyota COVID tax, I think you need to VAX-up and review.

Three words. 1- good 2- great 3- awesome. **** Thanks for a very detailed review.
Love your reviews and you are the go to place for a review. Can’t wait to see a review of the GR sport.
Thank you!
There's an almost indefinite waiting list, certainly stretching beyond four years. By which time it will be time for the next minor facelift. As an aside, I own a 100 series turbo diesel automatic with active suspension and have done from new in 1998.
Nice one! Hopefully the wait list reduces a bit once they restart production.
It’s not four years, my local Toyota dealership told me it realistically will be 10-12 months
@@BaileyEthanRawson Was that in the hope that youd drop a deposit? Toyota quote 10 months for a Rave 4 Hybrid and less time for a hilux, so its likely that it will be greater than 10 months.
@@stevenmuscat8126 nope, he knew I wasn’t in the market for a new car.. he was honest and said he didn’t know how long it would be until LC300 deliveries arrive but definitely not 3-4 years and more likely to be 9-12 months.. I’d be happy to wait that time to be honest because the car I drive at the minute still drives very well :)
@@BaileyEthanRawson I’m having to wait 8 months for far for just a vx Prado, there is no way it will be just a 12 month wait for the LC 300. Salespeople are absolute liars I was told 6 month wait max
Great look at the Cruiser , thanks.
RIP. I’d like to see the Sahara reviewed thanks.
Maybe the Lexus is better
I would love to see a comparison between Defender 110 P400 and Land Cruiser GR! Please make sure you get the Defender with additional options that make it great as the base version will seem dull in front of the LC GR.
Those are AT tyres? If it wasn't pointed out that they're AT Tyres, I would have thought they're HT Tyres. They are the mildest tread pattern I've seen on AT Tyres.
I know, right?!
Yep they are super mild AT.
if there's one thing i love about land cruisers, its their out of world wheel articulations.
Paul, Review every model in every colour!
😅😅
@@CarExpertAus When it is a Land Cruiser, the usual 'click bait' rules don't apply.
Toyota seemed to really nail this new model. Wish they sold them over here in Canada
GX/GXL review please. Has always been the most coming grade purchased by your everyday punter. Awesome review - 300 looks the goods!
Will do!
Kinda getting addicted to your style of reviewing cars 🙂
😅 thank you!
I’m a big fan. I’d love to get my hands on one.
🙌
Saw a white upper spec on the roads in Brisbane last week near Toowong. Looked very impressive and the dynamic indicators on the back really added to the overall look.
I saw a white one at Springwood on the M1 heading south. Might be the same one.
I'd like to see a comparison of top and bottom if possible. Great review mate
Awesome review Paul! Thanks. I’d love to see a review on the GX. Looks to be good value for money now, particularly if you want to chop one or use around a farm.
Will do!
I think you haven’t looked at any other vehicle for value. $90k for basic land cruiser, how’s that value? But you do decade old technology from Europe.
Stay with 79 for farm vehicle. Toyota COVID tax, I think you need to VAX-up and review.
@@bushmagpie3312 value in the sense that I know I i can keep it for years without any issues. Just like all my past Toyota’s… and surrounding cocky’s in the same boat. It will handle rough driveways (they are km’s long) and dirt roads all day everyday which is what I need. 79 had one, no good for big kms on rough roads everyday .
would you reckon the 300 series is superior than the prado as far as off roading goes? Again great review btw
Always love your review man. Thank you for doing this 🤗
Thanks!
Great review for a great Truck. Best wishes from Chicago. And Paul are you Serbian? 🇷🇸
Thank you Paul, I wanted your opinion on the 300, well done.
Thanks for watching!
Paul great video, keep up the good work,
Greatings from Hrvatska
Hvala!
I love the j300, But will u review the Sahara ZX Pual cuz I love the Sahara ZX it's more Luxury, also it's my favourite SUV since 2010 like 10+ years now will u review the Sahara ZX, Thx
Yep! Will try and get one 😁
@@CarExpertAus Thx Pual and the Australian team from carexperts, From Australia, Vic, Melbourne
Thanks Paul. Nice vid, I like it
Thanks for the review. Can’t wait to the GR Sport and Sahara ZX reviews
Thanks for watching!
Great review!! Little disappointed with the half screen infotainment display and not much of a 3rd row.
Thanks! And agree with you on that.
I just go straight for the CarExpert review when a new model drops. Would love to see the higher end models reviewed like the Sahara and GR Sport. I think those are the models that most people who buy Landcruisers will get. The only people buying the pov packs are old people who just want a capable tow vehicle.
Thank you mate!
Love your videos and great reviews. Will say that touching the camera lenses with your finger triggers my OCD. LOL.
After this release Nissan really need to improve the interior of the Patrol
💯 it’s starting to feel damn old!
💯 it’s starting to feel damn old!
The European, UAE spec patrol has had an upgraded interior since the facelift but Australia doesn't get it. Look it up ok RUclips
@@anthonyramdin1037 Yeah, its weird, I have no idea how it makes sense to run an extra line for it.
Love your reviews mate! Picked up the Kluger Hybrid from Werribee Toyota- you're review tipped me over the line in getting that.
You can't buy it though. Only dealers got cars to show off for the next six months until stock actually arrives.
Awesome! They’re a great bunch there - and even greater now they helped us out. I bought my Supra from them too!
G RC SPORT please... Sad to see that they don't come with 7 seats...
High on my list for a spin!
paul, I have waited for you to review lc300 for a long time!!!
😁
Mate, for me, you do the detailed review on the two variants: the top of the line and the GR sport. End of conversation. Cheers!
👏👏 sounds like a plan!
Good job.
Nice updated dashboard bt i still love LC 200 exterior & its split tailgate.
If you haven't subscribed yet do it you won't regret it. This is a great Australian RUclips channel. He uploads great videos all the time. Great review thanks.
Thanks legend!
10 L per 100K is 23.52 mpg that's great fuel mileage compared to the 5.7 V8 we get/had in the 200 Series here in the States the 200 Series was getting at best maybe 17 mpg
want to see the entry level review. cheers
Keep an eye on the Chasing Cars channel for that.
I'm definitely buying this LC300series if I get to win lottery 😂.....great review bro 👍
Will you be reviewing the GR sport and Sahara too btw? Interested to see how they'll fair in your tests.
Yes! In due course.
Really, no centre console fridge for the VX? That is a terrible omission. Would love to see the GR reviewed too please.
Land cruiser Beast of a machine
🙌
Great review, thank you. All those gizmos make me so grateful I have a 76 V8!
