I can not believe they have a hatch at the rear, the split tail gate of the 100's and 200's was one of their best features. Big step backwards IMO.

@@saltymonke3682 Yeah I'm sure the split tail gate was really killing fuel economy 🙄 And I'm willing to pay the extra cost it may have meant. You can simultaneously be a Toyota fan while still criticizing some of their design decisions on the new LC.

      @@casualobserver2997 that's why I'm asking.
do you have a better idea to cope with the emission regulation, better performance demand with smaller displacement from the customers, durability, reliability, better fuel consumption, and suitable pricing.
Toyota can reinforce its structure with light high tensile carbon fiber, but at what cost? is it repairable in every corner of the world? Many people said that LC is overpriced already. Split gate can't use the usual alloy and aluminium because you will sit on it. Toyota knows it.
      any idea?

Great review mate. Best one out there.
Good to see that Toyota have used significant Australian input into the design process and haven’t messed too much with a winning formula.
Smaller fuel tank is a backward step.
Carrying capacity is still terrible though. With 7 passengers on board and a piddly amount of luggage, you would exceed the load limit. Further deduct a Bullbar, towbar, roof rack, long range tank and the ball weight of the van you’re pulling and you’re overweight before you even pack anything. Something needs to change in Australia’s weight limit allowances because most people who will use these things for what they’re designed for, will technically be illegal and uninsured because they’re too heavy. The footage of the van being towed, assuming a 10% ball weight (290kg), plus the weight of the towbar itself, leaves an effective carrying capacity of under 300kg, before passengers! This is not a Toyota problem, but still needs pointing out.
The GR Sports KDSS and double diff locks need to be offered as an optional package for the GX or GXL version, because most people who are really going to put their car through the wringer off road, don’t want to be paying for a sunroof etc.
Great to see the off road ability actually improve compared to its predecessor.
Will be interesting to see how that hot-v engine design engine holds up to running at max load in hot temperatures. If it does, then they’ve done well to coax so much grunt from that size engine.

Toyota have certainly put a lot of effort and technology into the 300 Series. When I was asked what I would like in a new Cruiser, I asked for (1) 8 Cylinders twin turbo diesel, say up to 5 litres capacity; (2) 800nm torque and (3) 4000kg towing capacity. I do agree though a basic version with more manual switch gear, a SR spec or even DX spec as in the hilux range, this would also be the model that most who want to chop and out a canopy or build a wagon Overlander would want, less cost but also less electronics to go wrong in the outback, personally hate all the chrome stuff on a off road vehicle, problem with Toyota is the cross over into other models becomes an issue, so a Prado is next and then you are stepping into that price category, IMO they have too many models, as don’t get the Fortuner for example, Highlander to Prado is all ya need IMO, this would alleviate the marketing and price issue and also reduce model confusion, they almost compete against they’re own models to a degree.

      @chrisdavies3589 3 года назад +3

@@devinb3397 maybe that’s their intention, but what if the punters want the full fat Landcruiser? In series gone by the GX was reasonably affordable as the underlying platform was quite simple. We’ve now got a 300 GX with vinyl flooring at $90,000+ so it seems there’s possibly too much expensive tech built into the underlying platform. What I’d like to see is a GX without the tech and see what that might cost.
I probably don’t understand modern production line techniques but I would’ve thought with the robotized assembly methods of today anything should be able to be deleted from the build or at least certain electronic trickery could be disabled on my poverty pack 300.

The $139k excludes on road costs. Toyota lists this at $150,966 on the road...! But consider this: When it comes to price you need to bare in mind that these vehicles have the best resale value of anything on the Australian market bar none. So despite what you pay you'll get it all back when you sell it if you look after it. Buy a Mercedes for $200k and it drops $30k after the 1st year and keeps dropping after that. Just price a 2nd hand 200 series for further proof of this. Most people talk price only without talking about cost of ownership.

The base GX spec 300 Series has some features which makes it nicer than 200 Series GXL - leather wrapped steering wheel, automatic dipping headlights, radar cruise control, electronic park brake, power folding mirrors, lane keep assist (although this feature seems to be universally unliked). The significant key differentiators like more power/torque/gears is a huge plus, as well as the 17" diameter wheels. However the somewhat cramped interior, unnecessary hump on the floor and curiously narrow cargo bay area are unexpected detractors. It's got the same wheel base as the 200 Series, so where exactly did all that volume of space disappear to?
No doubt Toyota will use this same TNG-A platform for the next Prado, so I think it means that there is hope the next gen Prado will be good buying as it will likely have near identical interior space, but at a more affordable price point.

I think Toyota/manufacturers develop these advanced systems to work the best with an auto box now. Light throttle and let traction do it all for you. I can see the traction control just fighting, dash light's flashing you as soon as you step off the clutch offroad. Target market for these are people that tow caravans. Personally I'd love a modern decent sized SUV that's more analogue. I'd be perfectly happy with a manual, big clutch, diff locks and strong axles. The world doesn't want that anymore though. The GU and 80 were the last of them.

Good all round presentation but this I can get in the Toyota showroom. The latest 200 looks a lot better next to the 300 (here in Dubai) and besides the dashboard upgrade (which makes me jealous) - I see no reason to trade in my EXR v8. Perhaps the next refresh will give us electrification (PHEV could be great) and the return of the split tale gate. I do not believe for a minute that Toyota listened to current owners, otherwise there would have been a different vehicle. But the 300 will sell to the target audience because there is still the unique Toyota resale value and the strong dealer network - which competitors simply lack.

OK - I'm surprised its not called the new Prado rather than a 300 series .
It's Bigger where it should be smaller, (Body panels, dash, and centre console) and its smaller where it should be bigger (3L v6 engine, engine bay is cramped, forward and side vision is obstructed by a Euro styled screen and what's with the massive safety system behind a small rear vision mirror).
As an owner of a 2014 200 series GX, I feel Toyota has sadly missed the point. The GR looks great, but costs more than a Sahara, yet has fewer seats, limited off-road enhancements and next to no accessories. A dealer has offered to buy my GX with the hope I would consider the 300 series.
I won't be downgrading, I'll stick with my barn doors, vinyl floors, simple driver aids and under-tuned low revving engine until Toyota make some concessions: Price and remove the dangerous nanny systems.
Thank you for your review, but I am not sold on the "300" - or should it be the called the "Prado+". Incredibly, the Nissan looks a better deal despite being only available in Petrol.
