Paul, I’m not sure why you bang on about extended servicing intervals. The only reason I’m chipping you on this point is because of the “car expert “ title. I do enjoy your comparisons but any expert on cars should inform the public that there is not an engine in passenger cars sold that should be serviced beyond 10,000km intervals. It is a marketing gimmick. This isn’t my opinion, this is a fact given by the experts that are dealing with these engines when they play up. Also, when your Land Rover (or any other extended service vehicle) goes in for its 26,000km interval they want you to replace the brakes pads and often rotors! because they are concerned it won’t make the next 26,000km even though they’ll do another 20,000k’s - big money spinner for the dealships. Just some honest and thoughtful car advice - because people simply don’t know these things.
People pay absolute premium prices for 100 Series Land Cruisers with the turbo 4.2 litre engine and consider them to be good towing vehicles. 1HD FTE produces 151 kW and 430 Nm of torque going through a 5 speed auto gearbox. Our expectations must have changed a lot when a 1GD-FTV Prado makes 150 kw and 500 Nm with an 8 speed auto is considered to be "under powered". I'd much rather tow with a Prado 250 than a 100 Series TD if both vehicles were bog stock standard, as the Prado has 16% more torque and more gears to keep the engine at the most efficient rev range.
@@tempestv8a 1hd-fte has been proven time and time again to be a better engine than a 1gd. Literally no one argues that a 1gd is a better engine. They’re literally 23 years apart. A difference in torque/litre is to be expected. Literally like comparing apples to oranges.
Proud owner of a 2015 150 series Altitude here. Live almost everything about it. after having a 80 series before that. We were keen to trade up to a new prado despite its horrible looks but EVERY review provides another reason to look elsewhere for our next purchase. Terrible boot space, too heavy, too expensive, redundant features. Who the hell wants to plug a HDMI cable into the dash?
We’re waiting for either the Tank 500 PHEV or the BYD Leopard 5… Both look way more capable than the 250 and significantly cheaper. Reliability to be confirmed, but so far owners’ reviews of the latest GWM and BYD models bode well.
Great review, I like the positive review of the mild hybrid. I don't however see how there is justification in Toyotas deception of their fuel usage. almost 3L higher than stated? I understand what you said in that it's a heavy car - I have no issue in the fuel economy, but manufacturers constantly lying about it. Somebody needs to keep them in check.
didn’t you let go off the accelerator when you saw the speedo at 100km/hr?and that is why it didn’t go past 100 on the gps? I did see a video towing 3t van at 110 km/hr.
Hmmm, wait. What?.....regarding getting stuck at 22:33 .... I fit a Torsen Auto Rear LSD to my '95 Disco 1 a few years back. It would not find that crossover situation to be such a problem.....the diff would have gripped hard pushing it like that... downside being it can suddenly (mostly) lock with a thump if pushed too hard.... with so much one rear wheel spinning on your example there I reckon that is behaving like an open diff?.... Dumb question... but are you sure theres a Torsen LSD fitted to that model?
Fuel economy towing is shocking. Our V6 250kw petrol Disco towing 3500kg has never gone past 20l per 100klms even when flogging it. Sure, it averages 14 when not, so there's that penalty. Maybe I'm missing something here?
For the flies, don't swat your hands. Hold your index finger up and slowly move your hand across your face from left to right to left, preventing the flies from landing. You can have a conversation without going mad.
Slap a different badge on it and it’s got nothing going for it. Imagine if this was a GWM. People would shit on it. V6 diesel from the 300 would’ve been great. Would’ve had something going for it
@@narsil316Yup. He took it through the big puddle at Lerderderg, the same one I took the Patrol Warrior through when it was much deeper. The Toyota went back on a flatbed.
The changes to the Prado seem like an emissions workaround so that the 300 can be sold for a couple more years without such additions. Sales average emissions etc.
All Toyota owners are uneducated peasants. Most of them would have gotten theirs with 0% deposit just to impress their neighbours.. whilst the others are listening to their uneducated grandma about how Toyota USED to be great.
Very happy 150 series owner here. I cancelled my order for a 250 GXL as soon as I saw the ridiculous rear set-up. Also not happy with the reduced tank size. Why the hell doesn't Toyota offer the GXL (the most popular version) in a 5 seat form? Interestingly, the 'up to 12 month wait" when I ordered in Sep 2024, finished up being only 3 months shortly after the car was released - I could have taken delivery in late December. I suspect that hundreds, if not thousands of people have cancelled once they saw the rear compartment. To their credit, Toyota refunded me the $1k deposit.
So the off road model gets a disconnecting sway bar but no rear diff lock and the luxury model gets a rear diff lock? The all terrains on the Altitude are passenger rated. So about as useful to off road enthusiasts as taking ice cream on a camping trip without a fridge. And they all have the mighty mouse 2.8l? I guarantee if Toyota released a wheelbarrow with the LandCruiser badge for $15k their order books would be full.
I was so hyped up before this vehicle came out. Saw it in person at a dealer and was utterly disappointed at just how shit the boot space is. The five seat versions are better in the boot, but still limited space
Here's a question, you do braking tests from 100kmh in a straight line yet don't test the ESC? The average buyer see's ESC (that emblazoned little acronym on the spec sheet) and thinks that it will get them out of a jam rightly or wrongly and steer them to the teat of there mother. If car makers can't make traction control work as intended in 2025, then what's the odds that the ESC is just as enthusiastic when relied upon like the traction control, as in it will work just enough to qualify for the badging. How does the consumer know that the ESC program in the car there buying passes muster. When I was at school a D+ was a passing grade by the skin of your teeth. Point I am trying to make obviously is that there are excellent ESC programs and average going by Moose testing up North and since all these car makers bang on about there safety features, then why not prove it? Not asking for crash testing, but some cones could be set out I would think?

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 100% correct! Although, that 100 series sounds beautiful in comparison to the Prado ☹️
Yes the 1HD-FTE definitely sounds more substantial compared to the 1GD-FTV, which gives the impression that it will last a very long time.
Just don’t get too caught up with “on paper” figures. There’s a lot more to power and torque than peak outputs. It’s just a selling point these days.
@@tempestv8a 1hd-fte has been proven time and time again to be a better engine than a 1gd. Literally no one argues that a 1gd is a better engine.
They’re literally 23 years apart. A difference in torque/litre is to be expected. Literally like comparing apples to oranges.
It's because the components inside the engines have alot more surface area to wear on. 😉
10.6L/100 is insane
I get better than that in a 10+ year old 150. How far we’ve come
Especially comparing it to the incoming Tank 500 PHEV at 2l/100km. Which also is way cheaper, has more power, and looks less plasticy inside.
Only in 2024/25 can you buy a range topping car and have blank buttons from features only found on lower spec models.
The fuel saved by the turn on turn off system is completely ludicrous it seems to me this Prado is a step backwards from the previous model
It’s an emissions box-ticker.
It would save more fuel if they made it lighter. They fill these cars with tech that doesn't work and just adds weight. Less weight less tech for me.
Red hot turbo, no oil flow (from it turning off) not a good combination.
As I always comment, whoever thought that boot setup, especially on the 7 seater, was acceptable should be publically shamed.
I really want to see you do the same drive and towing test for the Porsche Cayenne diesel and diesel S
Tank 500 looking good
Try a cork hat Paul 😊😅 or a bunch of Geraniums, great review thanks
Great review, I like the positive review of the mild hybrid. I don't however see how there is justification in Toyotas deception of their fuel usage. almost 3L higher than stated? I understand what you said in that it's a heavy car - I have no issue in the fuel economy, but manufacturers constantly lying about it. Somebody needs to keep them in check.
Surely you’d grab an Everest over this? If they bring a v6 version would be half good
It needs the turbo petrol that the Lexus version comes with.
The flys in Australia are another level
didn’t you let go off the accelerator when you saw the speedo at 100km/hr?and that is why it didn’t go past 100 on the gps? I did see a video towing 3t van at 110 km/hr.
Why no commentary/explanation for the worse unladen fuel economy?
I reckon the lifted boot helps make the glass tailgate functional. You probably couldn't reach anything on the floor if it was a flat floor.
Fuel economy towing is shocking. Our V6 250kw petrol Disco towing 3500kg has never gone past 20l per 100klms even when flogging it. Sure, it averages 14 when not, so there's that penalty. Maybe I'm missing something here?
It's not a defender killer, it's a Toyota killer. Payload and that boot space 😮. Where does the set of draws and the fridge go?
And if you rip it out the warranty is goooooooone
You need to use the wasp bait for flies but iy wont catch wasps or at least the two types flying around here😅
For the flies, don't swat your hands. Hold your index finger up and slowly move your hand across your face from left to right to left, preventing the flies from landing. You can have a conversation without going mad.
I bought a second hand 300 series for an extra 5k over this and the thing is a beast 227kw and 700nm. Only 15000kms on the clock.
Definitely the smarter choice
Slap a different badge on it and it’s got nothing going for it.
Imagine if this was a GWM. People would shit on it.
V6 diesel from the 300 would’ve been great. Would’ve had something going for it
Yes but if it was GWM it would be priced at 45k and now that's becoming a proposition.
Void your warranty from removing the 3rd row? How can that void your warranty.
According to Toyota it exposes the 48V mild hybrid system to the elements.
God, if that's how sensitive their 48v system really is, I'd hate to see it survive a trip across australia or up north.@CarExpertAus
@@Dvladvocatedidn’t the CarSales guy flood it last month? 😂
@@narsil316Yup. He took it through the big puddle at Lerderderg, the same one I took the Patrol Warrior through when it was much deeper.
The Toyota went back on a flatbed.
Another RUclips channel killed the new Prado crossing 400ml of water. This car is a joke. Need to give it a few more years to iron out the issues.
Carsales. You can say it. It was Carsales.
Hilux GR sport uses the same engine tuned up to 550 Nm torque and 165 Kw. Why couldn’t that have been done to the new Prado?
They're saving that for next years GR "sport"Prado
No doubt charge alot more to for what is essentially just a remap
Ohh what a feeling
It could of been. But they didn't want to.
Keeps the old Hilux special until the new one?
....find out if the petrol powerplant mod coming to Aus??
Overpriced, old engine, after thought hybrid system and boot design, missing features BUT it still sold out … Australians are really a simple bunch
Toyota have for years been serving up an inferior offering but fan boys just lap it up like breast milk to a new born.
Quick question, Is it possible to remove the third row seats?
Yes but you lose your warranty - he said
I bought the Ford Everest Platinum.
12:31 apart from that enormous bullbar?
Please find a different tag than RIP . They're not going to stop making it because something else is vaguely competitive.
Does this Kakadu come with airbags at the rear? Does the suspension become firmer when on sports mode?
Pity there is no V6 version available.
You can't store your groceries in a V6 engine bay so it wouldn't really matter.
Hat with corks it's the traditional remedy for a land infested with flies😅
This is Toyota testing the brand loyalty of the market. Anyone buying this over the current alternatives is seriously drinking the Kool Aid.
It should be a better tow vehicle than the last one.
Nissan Patrol Warriors can be bought for around 100k drive away....🤑😉
Capable vehicle, but dogshit interior. Perhaps the V6 will improve on that part?
Anything high in DEET will help these reviews.
Deet is very toxic, it should be banned
DEET reacts with plastic... including car interiors. I speak from experience.
DEET doesn’t always work with bush flies, they can be relentless.
The only thing that works to stop all the arm waving is a fly net 👍
Does this Landcruiser come with the 1000+ flies too?
Paul needs one of those wide brimmed hats with the corks😆
Fly net with or without a hat ?
Paul, what did you do with Flies. They are chasing you everywhere 😅
It's the GWM employees
Time for a hat fly net Paul.
19:12 Hi Paul, great review. Just wondering what the app is called that you are using to do the 0-100 and breaking distance test please? Cheers
Fly traps work over a period of weeks not hours
hybrid version is like an afterthought for the 250.
The off-road model gets a disconnecting sway bar and rear diff lock. The luxury model doesn't have either, but has Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS).
I was so hyped up before this vehicle came out. Saw it in person at a dealer and was utterly disappointed at just how shit the boot space is. The five seat versions are better in the boot, but still limited space
Boot space and probably the massive price hike with the ho hum dated interior.
Everest Tremor coming, I'd take that any day.
so overpriced its not funny... I'd still love one though. If i had the money I'd get the Lexus GX
Save your money and buy a patrol
If only toyo supplied a decent engine the Prado would be worth it. But no they keep scewing us.
