    Watching you pull that beast of a motor, I [somewhat fondly] recall the utter simplicity of the 1300cc motors that preceded it. Disconnect 3 bits of shroud, the gas, throttle cable and electrical leads for the choke and coil, disconnect the heat ducts, jack up the rear end, disconnect the 4 bolts holding the motor to the transaxle and drop it. Of course, it also made 36 HP...

I picked up a 2000 Subaru WRX for 500 bucks that was a "get it out of my yard, I'm tired of looking at it" kind of deal that I knew nothing about. That @#% car has thrown me more curveballs than anything I've ever worked on. I now know more about the EJ205 than I ever thought I would.

  • @douglasburnside
    @douglasburnside Год назад

    I remember when I could remove the engine from my 1966 911 in about 15 minutes with nothing more than jackstands, a floor jack, a socket set and a couple of end wrenches. Two engine mount bolts, two transmission mount bolts, one bolt for the shift linkage, one fuel line, about three wires, the big hose from the oil tank, then drop the jack and roll the engine out from under the car. That two liter flat six put out a mighty 130 horsepower, and you got to choose between holes in pistons if you ran hot enough spark plugs to keep from oil fouling, or frequently fouled plugs. I tried both methods.

Hopefully the motor is in better shape then the gut wrenching felling I've got in my stomach upon seeing that...
    Looking forward to seeing the fully tuned Ferrari in due time, I'm sure (Mrs.) Wizard is looking forward to taking it out for a cruise. I'll admit, Holley EFI wasn't the first system that jumped into my mind - just never seen Holley outside the usual American V8's (well, the odd American 6's here and there - but nothing really beyond those applications spring to mind). However, I'm glad it's installed and working. I do hope this will lead to more opportunities to see Holley EFI pop up more often, esp. in less traditional applications. 🙂

    Based on the engine teardowns Eric on the I Do Cars channel does, there's two levels of German. There's the positive kind where it's thoughtfully designed and relatively easy to figure out, like the venerable air-cooled VWs and Porsches. And for everything else (modern VW/Audi, BMW and Mercedes) the engineers are seemingly locked into a contest to make everything as clever as possible with no regards to any kind of practicality.

    • @tjroelsma
      @tjroelsma Год назад +3

      Even that can be forgiven in my opinion if they at least build a durable engine by using quality components.
      Modern BMW engines are being built with as much plastic as humanly possible and plastic that goes through constant heat and stress cycles breaks, you don't have to be an engineer to be able to figure that one out. The VW/Audi group isn't far behind BMW and even "good old" Mercedes, a brand that used to boast that they used at least 6 bolts where others used "only" 4 bolts, has succumbed to the "make it as light and fallible as possible while still getting it through the warranty period" hype that's been driven by ever greedier manufacturers.

The body and interior are in decent shape, and even if the engine is trash, the manual gearbox should be worth something, so lot of parts to pick from. If it wasn't a flip car I might have suggested that it be combined with the Tesla from a previous episode and made into an EV but I don't know if the result will have any resale value or not.

    Jared I am not very far from you I would love to wrench on the car with you at no expense of yours. I did a complete repair of a 996 it’s pretty tricky and fun at the same time if your interested I could send you some of my pictures of the before and after work. Put a stage two clutch on mine and clutch system was replaced also I did a bearing replacement with the upgraded bearings.

    I’ve heard that the part below the camshaft getting continuously tapped fails and it’s that debris which fouls the timing chains and when they jam they snap
    Look for that in case it’s that
    Help me diy tore down a Boxster engine and that was the issue 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🙏

    Always learning one way or the other. That valvetrain would make great table art if nothing else. Happy to hear the 308 start (if you sat on the ground next to it would it look like you fit from the other side? asking because I loved Magnum's but always suspected I would have to look over the windshield to drive like him) any news on the IS F fix? I hope the Porsche works out for you. Maybe you could be the first to swap in a lexus v8 into it to aggravate all the purists in both camps! At least your garage is half way towards the "justifying a higher education" poster now.

    Jared the strangled chicken sounds at the end of the first Porsche start sounds like a bosch starter issue 🤷🏼‍♂️
    I’ve had a bunch make that sound 🤦🏼‍♂️😂😂

    Maybe take a look at the pistons with the bore scope.

    Perhaps the engine cover release has a capacitor which required a decent battery present for a while to charge up?

    I think the only special tool you need to get is an LS Swap Kit... Phew~~~ $25k vs 40k

    That is the thing with chains, when they break it is a complete disaster. The chain and the weakest link, and so on, and so forth. If the heads are not warped, see if you can get a short block from ScrapLife Garage. Maybe they have a full engine? I would not LS swap it, it devaluates the price of the car.

      And the cost of everything for Hoovies LS swap in Apollo 911 was comparable to getting a good used Porsche engine.

    I have to wonder if a Subaru EZ30 (phase 2, aka EZ30R) would fit and run on the stock electronics. Mechanically they have a lot in common, including parts. The VVL system is literally borrowed from this porsche engine and the VVT should be similar enough. My only uncertainty would be rotation direction and the timing trigger patterns.

    Well at least you weren't responsible for the damage since it made the noise the second you started it. If these engines are so problematic I's say it's time for a swap, if it can't be made more reliable.
