Simon, I am rebuilding my Master shower in a corner right now. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate all your videos! The only thing is I hope I did not make a critical mistake by building the curb on top of the pre-slope I made with Floor Mud. It was a decision I had to make due to multiple conditions. I am about to waterproof the pre-slope and curb with very special attention to it all.
Hi. Do you have to put a pre-slope below the dry pack? I was planning to do a dry pack pan thats sloped to a flo fx drain kit. Its going on a slab. Can i just do a sloped dry pack pan, then use the waterproof membrane, then tile? Thank you for making great video.
When I prep the shower I will use dry pack mortar to build pre slope pan that creates slope for rubber liner. Then i will install rubber liner and build shower pan using dry pack mortar. I never used Fx drain kit.
Great videos, but a great addition would be comments about drying time between layers. Based on the video it looks like you put the dry pack on right after applying the first layer of thin set. Did you let that thin set dry at all, or just applied the dry pack while the thin set was still damp?
I use thinset to bond plywood or concrete floor with dry pack mortar then I use thinset to bond the fiberglass mesh with it and then I coat everything with waterproofing membrane. You don't have to wait between layers. After waterproofing everything you have to wait till everything dries (12 hours minimum) then you can install PVC pan liner and build shower pan. Thanks for watching
Very helpful. I hadn't thought of painting on waterproofing before the PVC liner, but it makes sense. I have plenty of Redgard so might as well. A couple questions: Do you need to use adhesive between that preslope and the PVC liner? And do you allow any drying/curing time for each layer before doing the next?
Do you do the same process for a wood subfloor? When applying th first layer of the modified thinset, is it done directly on top of the wood subfloor? If so, how does that affect removal if you need to remodel the bathroom again in the future? Thank you. Going to attempt to do my master bath soon.
Excellent video! What are the exact mortars that you used in this video? I see you a variety of options, but I want to duplicate exactly your method with exactly which mortars that you used? I just purchased the mesh you recommended. Thank you!
I use waterproofing membrane as extra protection. Presloped pan creates slope for PVC liner. PVC liner is thick and design to hold water, you can connect it with drains that are design to be use with it.
Hi thanks so much for your video ! I found some fiberglass mesh but it is in rolls that are about 10” wide. Do you think I could still use it if I lay 5 lengths of the 10” strips next to each other and embed them in a thin coat Of thinset? Or do you recommend that I keep looking for one solid piece of fiberglass mesh?
@@simonproatlthank you! Actually I went to a Brick and stone supply store and found the huge roll of fiberglass mesh. I have 3 showers to do so I decided it was worth the cost!
I was wondering the same thing. I would think let each layer dry first because each different material shrinks at different rates, but that is just my opinion.
homedepot is out of stock for the SAKRETE 50 lb. Floor Mud Mortar, which other one do you recommend? I like your videos, I am about to do your concrete curb this week, next is the pre slope bed... just dont know which mix to use... thanks!
@@dillpiklz The only way to make it stronger is to compact it by tapping it with float. It will increase its density. At the end you can also use a wet sponge and glide it on the surface to smooth it out and then use float make even smoother. I don't cover it with plastic. Thanks for watching :)
@@simonproatl is there any particular reason that you don't like covering it with plastic I've heard that it helps to keep in the moisture and makes it cure stronger
You're doing amazing Tile work. Waterproofing is definitely your expertise.
Thanks 👍

Glad to help.
Do you prefer sand mix or type S for a dry pack mortar bed?
Wow, I wish I could find a contractor in my area that is as thorough as you.
You can do it! :)
THANK YOU for making this video, it’s so helpful and specific for my project.
I'm glad that it was helpful.

Your video is great content, i like it. I have question though. How long does it take the dry pack to set before i can continue working? Thank you.
I usually wait till next day.
Hi Sam, my shower base is only 1/8 inch tall, is it ok to do pre slope? Thanks!
yes. I use thinset to bond mortar with plywood or concrete slab. Thin layer of thinset will strengthen mortar otherwise it will crumble
@simonproatl Thank you!

You need silicone around the drain between preslope and liner. It's better to wait till every layer dries.
Do you let the fiberglass mesh with thinset dry before doing the waterproof membrane?
It will work both ways wet and dry.
Can I use any fiber glass mesh or does it need to be stucco mesh?
It's the same thing. Stucco mesh is made from fiberglass.
Do you do the same process for a wood subfloor? When applying th first layer of the modified thinset, is it done directly on top of the wood subfloor? If so, how does that affect removal if you need to remodel the bathroom again in the future? Thank you.

Yes I always use thin set before the mortar. I make it a lot stronger. I never had to remove anything like that.
Thank you!

I just purchased the mesh you recommended. Thank you!
Sakrete Pre Blended 60-lb S Mortar Mix or Sand Mix
Thanks. Could you please link to the modified thinset you'd recommend?
FlexBond 50 lb. White Premium Crack Prevention Thinset Mortar
Excellent video, help me a lot thanks, 👍👍
Glad it helped
Why do you still need liner waterproofing if you used the mapei waterproofing membrane
I use waterproofing membrane as extra protection. Presloped pan creates slope for PVC liner. PVC liner is thick and design to hold water, you can connect it with drains that are design to be use with it.
@ thank you 🙂

Great video, but I would like to know all the steps from the very begging to the end. Thanks a lot!
Ok, thank you
Awesome work. How long do you get to work with the dry mix before it begins to set?
Under 2 hours
Hi. Did you apply the waterproofing right away ? Didn’t let the mud bed to dry ? Thanks.
It's better to wait till it dries but it will bond very well to damp surfaces.
I was wondering the same thing.

50 lb. Floor Mud Mortar, which other one do you recommend? I like your videos, I am about to do your concrete curb this week, next is the pre slope bed... just dont know which mix to use... thanks!
For pre-sloped pan you can use anything that has cement and sand like Sand/Topping Mix. For shower pan is better to use 4 to 1 Mud Bed Mix
Can i use fiberglass cloth instead
Yes. But it can get expensive. I used it on the shower curbs in the past. You can find large mesh in stucco supply store or on ebay.
You are a refreshing channel compared to the crap that is out there.
Thanks
So you are adding the pan liner on top of this?
Yes
Can i skip the mesh layer and just put the waterproof membrane on top of the dried mortar bed? It would be difficult for me to get the fiberglass mesh
Yes. You don't have to use it on the pre sloped pan. It's more important on a shower pan because i only make it stronger.
@@simonproatlalso you can mist the pre-slope and/or cover it with plastic overnight. I have heard will also strengthen it, yes?

Although I floated hundreds of pans and have never covered a plastic I just read that recently
Don't call that sponge "dumb" 😂
"You want to take the dumb sponge..."
Buena descripción de las herramientas,gracias.
Gracias :)
no showerpan?
In the future video :)
