    The item he picked up when he said, “…drill a hole…”, is a center punch. It’s used to make an indentation in the center of the broken fastener with the pointed using a hammer on the blunt end. That indentation is where you place the drill bit. The point of the indentation is to keep the drill bit from “walking” across the smooth service of the broken fastener.

    Extractors are over-engineered with too wide of an error margin that get you in a worse situation most of the time.
    $7 Harbor Freight reverse drill bit kit usually bites and unscrews broken studs with just the drill going at a slower speed in reverse. Make a good center punch, drill a smaller pilot hole then jump up a couple sizes- that larger size left hand drill will grab and get it. Corroded stud threads might make you use the bit that is almost as big as the stud but it will unthread the threads clean without stripping them.

    Guess this video isn't sponsored by Milwaukee. It's called tapping a bolt with a Helio coil. It broke because your employee used a metric socket or universal instead of SAE. Every real shop know to be extra careful with header bolts and they torch it first to ensure it coming out right. You employee got lazy and was in a weird angle because it was the last one on the firewall side.. he was trying to remove the bolts from on top and released the hangers first. Rookies

    I've done a ton of these, but today was a first.2 bolts broken, 1 bolt was broken in two places. Took the manifold off, both were broke off proud of the head...sweet. This'll be easy. Thread the nuts on, weld a cap, backer out...first one backed out, breezy...second one backed out...uh...much quicker for some reason...oh great. It broke BELOW the face of the head too.
    Filled with weld beads just above flush, held a nut in place with a pair of pliers, weld, weld, weld... Let it cool and backed it out. Took a few tries, but I've had way more success with welding em out than I have with easy outs or reverse drill bits.
    We even have the Lisle drill templates at my shop, but I'd still rather weld em out than drill em out...especially if they're passenger side closest to the firewall. Good luck drilling straight there.

    Or...do it the right way. Call a professional bolt extrator dude get him to re do that and put hardend steel speed-certs in it and every manifold bolt hole on both heads so then the new headers will be held in more securely then relying on bolts threaded into week aluminum...then charge your customer more for the proper job...bam!

    • @jasoninpersonam3664
      @jasoninpersonam3664 Год назад

      Exactly. Just a good center punch and a $7 set of Harbor Freight left hand drill bits start with a smaller bit make a pilot hole jump up a couple sizes and run the drill in reverse at a slower speed and even if you have to get up to the largest drill bit it will usually bite and and unscrew the broken portion of the stud or Bolt. Extractors are over-engineered and too tedious. Sometimes torching and Welding tricks get you in tighter spaces than an angle drill can but left-hand Drilling gets it most of the time if you're experienced to know what not to do.
