- How to repair a stripped valve cover bolt hole using a thread insert kit.
Engine: Honda D16Z6
Car: 1992 Honda Civic Si
Thread Insert Kit: Helicoil 5546-6 M6 x 1 Metric Coarse Thread Repair Kit -

10mm Socket
Adjustable Wrench (I didn't have the proper tap and die T-Handle at the time and I def recommend it)
1/4" Drill Bit
Drill
Painter's Tape
Shop Towels
Cotton Swabs
Blade
Eye Protection
Optional:
Lubricating Oil (for drill bit)
Gloves

This worked on my D16Y8. Previous owner/s pulled two of the threads, so the valve cover leaked at the corners. I used an OEM Tools kit from Autozone, however.

Literally happened to me when the opposite corner bolt had broke and I had to extract it. Damaged the thread since it was my first time. Exact same engine too. The z6 which is bomb btw

7ft lbs is what my manual says for the valve cover bolts on a d16z6 1.6. FYI
ill be attempting this in the next few weeks after my car comes from the paint shop. noticed it leaking oil around the valve cover. we went to change the valve cover gasket to find out my left bolt is stripped on the valve cover. im pretty confident this is causing it slowly seep and leak oil out.

Would be great if they gave you the exact depth to drill down to so as not to go too deep or too shallow.
Agreed! What I did was measure it, then I marked my tap bit with a black sharpie, but you probably can't see it in the video.

I believe so, should all be the same pitch. If you have a tap and die set you can easily measure, but I believe it is the same.

I'm wondering.... do you need to drill out the entire thread length of the bolt or can you stop when you've drilled the length of the helicoil?
I'm sure you can get away with drilling the length of the helicoil, but i'd also think you'd want to get the helicoil in a little deeper than just flush with the surface? Personally I did what I felt was the length of the bolt. You can probably even stack helicoil inserts if you wanted the entire length with new threads?
couldnt you just use a 1/4 drill bit and whatever tap and take a,bolt notch it at the end to drive it in? Because i bought an assorted set with no install tool
You could probably do that, this is just the way I preferred because I wanted everything to be as oem and easy to work on in the future.

When you look at the helicoil there is a a small piece of it that will need to be broken off once installed, it will automatically break off when you run a bolt through it after its installed into the newly tapped hole. That's just how that piece was described to me, i'm unsure if "tang" is the official term for it. Hope that helps!

You might want to look at thread pitch specs of your valve cover bolts for your particular engine. I want to assume it's the same, but better to make sure.

I imagine all those SOHC valve covers were all interchangeable from 1992 to even 2002 but the easiest way to validate would be to pick up a tap and die kit and use the thread measurement tool to measure the pitch on your VC bolts. I'd be surprised if it wasn't the same heli coil size.
Does the little tang break off and if so can you get it out?
You can if you have tweezers small enough to reach, or get creative with some tape at the end of a thin screwdriver

Assuming the same engine that should be correct.

Yes, that's why I used the thread repair kit, so that I could continue using existing hardware.
What if it’s completely broke any (for the moment) ways to hold the bolt down??
You might have to provide a little more detail by what you mean by broke? Is the bolt head broken off and the threaded part stuck in the hole?
Budget Track Junkie I figured it out I have to swap my rocker arm assembly I over cranked my valve cover bolt hole and it didn’t strip it broke in pieces smh 🤦🏾♂️

That's a great point! I've actually done several other repairs on other parts and i've used oil on the drill bit for lubrication, and the shavings do stick, but i'm still fine cleaning with a cotton swap after.
So I tried using en extractor because I over tighten that exact bolt and it broke. And the extractor didn’t really help and now I’m stuck with the bolt on the wall of the threads and the whole middle of the bolt is gone. What should I do? Please anything helps🙏🏽
If the extractor didn't help, you may have to drill out the rest...but don't exceed the drill bit size needed for a proper thread insert...if possible.
Yo did you end up using this helicoil inserts or what did you do. I'm basically done the same thing you did by drilling out the middle.
What about using a clear plastic cup and poke a hole through to capture the metal shavings...🤔 All 5 of my REAR valve cover bolts are stuck in there😭😭
I'm sorry to hear that man. But I don't think you want to poke all the way through. You might cause yourself other potential problems and leaks. Just my opinion.
That should work as long as you tape it similarly to how he taped the towel in this vid. I imagine it would be easier with the cup in harder to reach areas. Just might have to vacuum out the shavings from the cup before you pull it off or you’ll risk shavings falling back thru the hole when pulling it off
Hey guys can this cause a rough idle for an 08 civic 2 stripped bolts.
I'm not a certified technician or anything so don't take my word for it, but I believe that if the valve cover is not completely sealed due to stripped bolts it can potentially affect oil pressure and some oil loss that can possibly cause a rough idle.
@@thebudgettrackjunkie thanks for the quick reply yeah i changed a lot of the sensors and nothing i also changed the throttle body nothing i changed all spark plugs and the coils too and the little valve at the edge of the block that goes to the intake and the maf.........no change at all.....im going nuts and it throws the missfire code and the idle higher than expected.....im going yo try and rethread with a decent kit thanks again man!

Did you screw 2 helicoil inside the hole
I didn't need to for this one, but i'm sure you can if you needed to, i would just make sure the first one gets all the way to the bottom of the hole.
