RUSTIEST GTO Ever! ROTTED Frame! Will It Run and Drive?

  • This 1969 Pontiac GTO has been abandoned since the 1980s, rotted to pieces by Minnesota salt roads, but will it run and drive again? It is a very rare car sporting a de-optioned 2 barrel Pontiac 400, a column shift, bucket seats with no console, am/fm and in-dash tach but no other options.

If you ever pull a steering wheel again, here’s a free tip to prevent a free face rearrangement. Once the bolt/nut is off, wind it back on a couple of threads, then disengage the wheel. The bolt/nut should hold the wheel - hand tight should be plenty.

I didn't scroll thru the hundreds of comments (congrats on that!) but that GTO is pretty rare. The 2 bbl was only available in a GTO from 67 to 69 and is why it is a column shift GTO not a floor shift example. It does have some options though. The buckets are an option as well as the AM/FM radio. Also the "chicken wire" cowl grill does not specifically mean an early build car. I have a 1969 LeMans bought new by my grandfather that is heavily optioned that was built on December 22nd 1969 at the Baltimore Maryland plant and is has the exact same "chicken wire" style cowl grill. The car has 51k original miles and is completely original except the timing chain was replaced at 45k because I'm not a fan of factory nylon coated timing chains along with the water pump. The only other things that have been replaced are normal tune up parts. My gosh though, I've never seen a Pontiac frame that heavily rusted to the point the bumper fell off! Yikes!

Really really really looking forward to a follow up! If you want to drive it home, you may have to cut the hanging bits of the framerail and rear bumper off, aside from fixing the breaks. Also gotta do something to the floor pans, at least remove the seats and patch something in there that will hold for the trip. This thing wants to be saved, so save it, even if it means having to weld half the car again.

Back in the mid 80's, we pulled a Pontiac 400 2bl engine outta a land yacht in the wrecking yard. Did absolutely nothing to it. Even the timing set was ok, so in my buddies 68 firebird it went, with 2bl carb, single exhaust for the 326 it had in it. Thankfully it was a 4 speed and 3.33 posi. The engine had a chrome aircleaner and we did recurve a hei ign. It ran 14.3 at 95 all day long in quarter mile. Granted we are sea level in northern ca. That car was so much fun especially with single exhaust. Yes it did have 1 thrush turbo muffler. It was viewed as a freak and ran better than we coulda hoped.

Ya know something, only someone like you and I would ever take on a project like that. Most would part it out and scrap the rest.
That one is actually better than my 69 GTO, more of it is there for starters. Also it runs and drives, which is a huge bonus. The 2 barrel 400 with a column shifter is unique, not overly desirable, but definitely unique. It does look like the frame was cut, not rusted. The frame under my 69 GTO and the 64 LeMans are definitely rusted, I was concerned about getting the 64 out of the woods without tearing it in half.
If I didn't have a 72 Cutlass on my rotisserie taking up space, I would challenge you to see who could rebuild their 'show car' 69 GTO into a comfortable daily driver first. I need to get the Cutlass done and out of here, can't do any other big projects until its gone. Once I have it back on the frame and ready for paint, then I can race you to see who gets the 69 done first.. wait, that doesn't sound quite right..

Dalton, some top level revival, bringing that yard art back from the grave is highly impressive. There is an impressively small number of people on the planet who see that and say, "okay, put 60 minutes on the clock and I"ll be slinging rocks." Well done sir

Its kind of heart warming to see these old neglected cars get a second chance. So many have been lost. Time to get those that are dormant up and about.

I can not tell you how much the low buck club has put a smile on my face. The content you create and especially include your son gives me hope for the next generation. The collaborations with some of the other you tube automotive creators is pure genius. I look forward to these videos.

I laughed out loud when Dalton picked up the piece of tailpipe that had fallen off and made the comment about numbers matching 🤣🤣. Great video!

Nice job getting that thing going. What a heap though. I like that 70 Monte Carlo in the background. I've had one of those since 1987.

My first gto was a convertible 69 . It was so bad that when you opened the doors it just about folded in half but I was 17 and so happy to have a gto . Two part cars later and a lot of help from my dad I had my first car . You never forget your first car!!
