got the 2018 ultra limited ,bought a street glide seat whipped the tour pack off and now have the best of both worlds, street glide round town and ultra for trips ;-)

I have an Ultra, my friend has a SG Special. The roads round here are pretty shot & the Ultra rides the crappy surfaces much more comfortably than the SG Special.
I have a Tour pak quick detach, a 6 inch wave screen & a street glide seat. Takes 5 minutes to swap back to full tourer mode.

After being "bumped" from behind at night on my Street Glide, I went with the Ultra Limited last year. The amount of lighting up front and in the rear make all the difference to me. The heated grips are a nice touch too.

Good video. I ride my bikes as daily drivers amd while I loved my 16 Ultra, I am way happier with my 17 SGS. There is something about the lighter, more manageable streetglide it's more fun but still comfortable. I could have done the detachable set up, but enjoy the M8 107 alot. Both can do miles or around town, and that's the joy about HD scoots.

I have an 18 sgs, and the first thing I did was get the tour pak. Absolutely a must for when we take the family out for a week long trip. You mentioned the rear lighting isn't the greatest, im in Canada and our models come with a tail light and the signal lights. I went custom dynamics on all mine with the strobe function and everybody can see me now. The saddlebags lights are awesome too. Love the channel man, cheers. 😎😎😎

It all comes down to a matter of personal preference. I prefer the Ultra, myself. I've owned two of them and long before the Street Glide even existed, my buddies, who also rode Ultra's and myself we removed the Tour Pack from our bikes and made them in to Street Glides. We added chopped windshields, custom saddles, etc. The Tour Packs were on a quick release system so they were easy to take off/on. I think HD got the idea from guys like us with our Ultra Glides showing up at motorcycle rallies and decided to capitalize on the idea and hence, the Street Glide was born. The advantage in going this route should be obvious. For riding around town, I rode it like a Street Glide. Going on a big trip? I'd put the Tour Pack back on, replace the chopped windshield for the larger windshield and viola! Instant Touring bike! For me there's simply no better way to go.
I think the Street Glide appeals to a lot of people who: A) prefer the minimalist looks B) don't do long distance touring/have no need for the added luggage capacity. Both bikes are great and there are no wrong choices with either one.

I went with the Ultra and I am glad I did. The tour pack makes all the difference. I can stop on the way home from work and pick up groceries. I can run to town and pick up take out, it’s huge when you are able to get in these extra rides. My wife carries a very large purse, no problem, just throw it in the tour pack. When I purchased I had every intention of buying the quick release for the tour pack but now I just don’t want to remove, I will take the functionality over looking cool.

Traded my streetglide for an ultra limited and couldn't be happier. The lower fairing will accept speakers. The extra room on the SG stretched bags is a joke. I added quick detach hardware for when my tourpack is off. I added custom dynamics filler lights as well. Imho the ultra is 10x the bike, of course I can see the appeal of the SG for you short guys who don't like the twisties🤣🤣🤣

I have ridden them both extensively. The only thing you mention as way of proving that the SG is “better” than the UL is that it looks better. If that were true, some would say there would be no point in the SG if you are a “real” rider. Let’s face it though, aesthetics are important on a Harley, which is why we spend so much on aftermarket parts. That said, the one thing you really missed in the comparison is the ride. Yes the UL rides better on the freeway, but if you primarily ride around town, or out twisty roads to a gathering spot on a Saturday afternoon, that is the one place the SG Special really outshines the UL. Much lower center of gravity with the 1” lower ride hight and without that big ol’ tour pack, makes the SG Special much more fun around town. Looks and nimbler handling. Is that enough to justify all the things you give up on the SG Special ? Really depends on what you are going to do with the bike, right? The guys that buy a SG Special and then dump a bunch of money into a tour pack, rear speakers, lowers, and a bigger wind screen probably should have bought a UL. For my money, I’ll take the UL any day of the year, and simply put a quick remove kit on the tour pack. Pop the pack off, and you are almost as good looking, much improved handling, and you have a long list of advantages over the SG Special, like water cooling, heated grips, lowers, a real wind screen, RDRS...

I have owned both. I currently have a 2023 street glide special. Same frame, same engine. The stock differences are the lower suspension on the sg, no tour pack, stretched bags, passenger pegs instead of floor boards, no lower fairing on engine guard, no heated grips, smaller seat, shorter windshield, air filter is different, lower profile tires and the front fender is a little different. All just things to make it look sleeker. The view behind the bars is the same with the exception of the shorter windshield which I like because the top of the ultra windshield breaks right at my line of vision. I don't like looking through a windshield, I like an open view.

Firstly comparing a Street Glide to an Ultra Limited is quite a reach. The Street Glide would compare more to an Electra Glide Standard. The Electra Glide has taller rear shocks and is more comfortable for taller riders. That's a deal breaker for some people.

  • @Slking507

It isn't. They are exactly the same bike except the Ultra makes more power, and has wet heads. Stretched bags can be put on the Ultra, the SG seat can be put on the Ultra, you can take the tour pack off the Ultra, change the windshield, and use an SG front fender. You get much more in the exact same bike, and more with the Ultra.
