    Great video! The way you described and illustrated each type of hernia was very helpful. I underwent hiatal hernia repair when I was 9 years old in 1971. I don't remember a lot about that surgery, but I have a really nice scar that runs from just below my left nipple and around to my shoulder blade. LOL...thank goodness they figured out more non-invasive techniques to do this surgery today.

    Thanks for the explanation! I would like to know what treatments are available, as some people rely on antiacids and stomach wall protectors, but I'm not sure if we can use them on a daily basis. In my case, using those does not help a lot. Other people do some movements or exercises in order to try to bring it down. In other words, when should we think about surgery? Thanks in advance!

    I was just diagnosed with hiatal hernia. If I'm able to have surgery, I'm doing it. I want to be able to sleep on my back and not wake up with my throat burning, making me cough, and making my life miserable. I'm tired of throwing up. When I eat, I place a bet with myself as to if I'll keep my food down or not. It's miserable.

    Hi Dr. Parker. I just had an endoscopy and colonoscopy completed 3 days ago, and my GI discovered I have a small Hiatal Hernia along with Antral Gastritis and mild Distal Esophagitis. (Got a stool question coming up for you comment readers: so you've been warned) For the past week, my stools have been on the yellow side with tiny pieces of red in them. My question is if any of these medical impressions can be the cause of this?? He also discovered small hemorrhoids in the colon... FYI.

    I have seen so many doctors who haven't even bothered to feel my belly or do near enough testing and every symptom I have including pain in the chest especially right under the knob bone. (lack of better word) I also have an umbilical hernia that is painful. I've immediately told to take Omeprazole or other acid reducing medication. I'm so tired of every one bandaiding my problem. I've had both my appendix and portion of my colon removed over 30 years ago because stones formed in my appendix and cut off the blood supply thus gangrene set in and I was misdiagnosed not once but by 3 doctors including an attending in ER. Now I'm having so much problems with my guts I don't know who to trust.or confide in when it comes to my over all health! I feel my situation is hopeless and wonder if I will ever be able to have a normal happy life again.

  • @solidus1995
    @solidus1995 3 года назад +5

    Ive had a hiatal hernia for around 6 years now and I'm really reaching my witts end because processing food has become too exhausting. Its caused hemorrhoids and sometimes I throw up what I think may be bile but idk. Given what you said about the colon shifting positions as well I would assume I could be suffering from that as well. Doctors dont seem to really want to initiate any sort of surgery and are content with making me live on PPI medication. But I know the PPI is killing me slowly because I cant break nutrients down when I have such a reduction in normal acid levels. I'm caught in a vicious cycle but this video has motivated me to seek out a caring and assertive specialist who can help me have the surgery.

    Hi Buck,
    I'm in to bodybuilding and always trained my core very hard. I rushed myself to the hospital about a year ago when I was doing dips and I felt the extreme symptoms of what you mentioned is a paraesophageal hernia. I do get the `lump` in the throat but rarely ever do I get any kind of reflux, so I assume paraesophageal. At the time it occurred It felt like a balloon was expanding endlessly up into and outward out of my chest - right next to my highest rib on the right side. The ER found nothing wrong at all that night even though I was literally in tears as the discomfort was unreal while trying to hold my arms over my head during the CT scan.
    Since then I haven't felt the protrusion up into my chest but my whole abdominal wall can take no kind of pressure whatsoever. I've ceased all workout activity because its like my core is extemely overactive even when it shouldn't be. if i exert even the minimum amount of pressure - say carrying a medium weight bag for my girlfriend I will experience extreme distension, my breathing is restricted (diaphram?) and I have to focus my breathing and drink a ton of water in which I assume drops the stomach down to relieve that distension.
    The only thing I have been positively diagnosed with is a "small" hiatal hernia after a scope done by my GI. He saw me one time, scoped me one time and he says surgery would be more detrimental than good. I very much think otherwise at this point. I've noticed that my abdominal muscles are also separating more and more as the months go by and my symptoms have already caused me to lose my previous job, being intimate is difficult, this issue is ruining my life. All scans and doctors aside from the 'small hernia' diagnosis say nothing is wrong. Through my own tireless research I believe my problems are Diastasis Recti / Abdominal Wall fascia separation and the paraesophageal hernia. 5'10, 170 lbs, otherwise healthy. Can you give me an idea of what you think may be going on and also who to see? Sorry for the long winded text but I'm just throwing rocks out there at this point. -J

I love lifting thou I stopped lifting for 3 months and the symptoms reduced. They reduced also because I when from a high protein, low fat diet to a SALAD EVERY DAY with a medium protein , low fat diet. This helped although I still have a lot of belching. Death lift and backwards flips make it much worse. I can to cardio still. Sorry this happen to you.

    Dr Parker
    6 years ago I lost 50 kg. I got gallstones that were operated away. 14 days after surgery, I got a lot of pain. I arrived at the hospital and in a CT scanner. Doctors could see that my whole stomach and a large part of my small intestines were gleaned through a 16x16 cm hole in the diaphragm, and lay between the ribs and the lungs and the heart. Every day I have pain and sometimes get to the hospital and get a probe to empty the stomach. I weigh 130 kg and are not operated added has lost 25kg. It has become very difficult because I no longer tolerate fibrous food while my stomach is lying up there. Have you the same requirements prior to an operation of a sliding hernia? Best regards, Lise Broe

    I have been experiencing globus sensation and finally went to see a doctor about it at a walk in clinic. He prescribed omeprazole and was going to set up an endoscopy but told me to see my primary about this and set it up through her. I'm currently waiting until my appointment. My question is if the globus sensation is caused by a hiatal hernia, would a proton pump inhibitor relieve the sensation of something in throat? If so would a temporary acid reducer like TUMs work the same? I have no symptoms of heartburn whatsoever. I do have difficulty swallowing certain food like rice, raw carrots, popcorn, chips, and other similar items. It just gets stuck and I can't get it to go down until I either follow it with a fluid or I could cough it out, which is proving to be more difficult each time it happens. Thanks :)

    • @drbuckparker
      @drbuckparker  6 лет назад

      hard to tell. i think a trial of the proton pump inhibitor is reasonable in the meantime while you are waiting for the scope.

    • @w1975b
      @w1975b 6 лет назад +1

      just so you and anyone else understands, proton pump inhibitors prevent your stomach from making acid, so you won't be digesting any food while taking the "medicine". You might want to research magnesium in relation to globus sensation. Most people are deficient. For info on the different types and how to help your body absorb/use magnesium, check out Magnesium Advocacy Group on facebook.

    Hi, During endoscopy, Does everyone have alittle sliding hiatal hernia because of them gagging on endoscope, which does not mean they have a defect in the hole or anything just normal 2cm sliding due to gagging? i read they are very common. Also IS a sliding hiatal hernia HARMLESS? and we can forget about it if symptoms are not bad? The only symptom i have is a lump in throat AFTER endoscopy which ive had for over a month. Tried lansoprazole for it but i still have it so it cant be reflux, i wonder what it can be?. The other symptom is a little bit of water/drink coming up after a meal. Which could be normal or because im on ppi and my food is taking time digesting and im over eating/drinking. Hello Doc :) . Question , im not sure if i have hiatal hernia i keep having symptoms of GERD and my doc says i have a definite stomach issue. I have 2 questions , 1. can hiatal hernia cause referred pain in the left arm? and 2. how can I tell if i have hiatal hernia at home. Are there any sure fire tests that can tell me? My doctor seems convinced i do not have one and wont do ultrasound. (woohoo hmo health care) I keep feeling spasms or palpatation like feelings at the bottom of my breast bone and it always takes my breath away. I feel fatigued and generally horrible. I first thought I had heart attacks or angina but I have been to emergency many times(3 -4 trips) and everytime my heart checks ok(blood test, ekg) ! even on stress test! Thanks so much if you get to this . This issue has changed my life for a year. I feel like im my own dr these days :(

    I have been having a few problems for over a year and I suspect this maybe something to do with a hiatus hernia, GP just keeps giving me anti-acid medication which does not help. My symptoms, pain in centre of chest which gets worse with movement like bending. No heartburn symptoms, extra pain when eating and sometimes I feel lightheaded and dizzy when swallowing. These symptoms last for a few day and then clears and then returns back every few weeks. Buck Parker M.D have you ever come across someone with these symptoms?

    Interesting video. I found out earlier this year that they discovered I had a hiatal hernia in 2008. No one mentioned it to me. Now I am having dsyphagia and I can't help but wonder if the hernia is causing it. I had another Endoscopy earlier this year and it stated "A hiatal hernia was seen at the distal esophagus with the GE junction at 35 cm". Does that mean that the stomach has 35 cm above that hole? Is that common?

      well i'm not sure if anyone knows 100%. however if you think about it, it's increased intra-abdominal pressure that widens the hole around the esophagus. so obesity can certainly predispose someone to that but I see very thin people with it all the time, which makes me think the tissues aren't as strong there for some people or that there is some anatomic position that person has which causes a weakness in the tissue somehow.

The first surgery they cut me from belly button to sternum and the 2nd surgery they tried to reopen the same are but due to scar tissue they ended up cutting open my chest on my left side. I am in constant pain under my ribs and from being bloated. Can these exercises help or am I stuck with a lifetime of pain? I need help, but lost my insurances, so i at the end of my rope.

This is happening to me about one time per month for 6 months. My doctor has ran bunch of tests and everything has come back normal. I usually experience general nausea, but I throw up about one time per month and it lasts about two days and it takes me around four days to gain my energy back. It feels like having food poisoning or the flu. I am having a hard time eating as well. I have anxiety around eating because the throwing up has made me so traumatized. Sometimes the only relief is surgery. I had a Hiatal Hernia repaired after being so sick especially the last 3 years before the surgery. The slow process of healing after the surgery takes a year, eating small soft meals for easy digestion and drinking smoothies especially for dinner otherwise it is hard to sleep. I am so grateful for my surgery in spite of the hard painful recovery with diet.

    Can you make a video on how to treat this condition.. im 22 years old and this is really ruining my life.. i was in the hospital few times and they told me that this condition cant be treated, basically that i have to live with it.. i started to massage my stomach and it gets better from time to time, i can feel my stomach going down, i usually feel a beat below my diaphragm, but after 30min of massaging it goes down to my belly button and i can eat again. It goes back up when i get really upset or do some heavy lifting. Is there any way to get this off my back for good?

      @@Beast_10xX yea I had a bulge and it was hard too. But it's better now. Went from hospital to hospital vomiting like a mad man and noone could help. Then I went to a lady that does massages and all kind of things. She put my stomach back in place and gave me things to drink and eat, all natural. I gained few kilos now and can eat normally. @@Beast_10xX I had and probably still have a hernia. The symptoms can vary, I unfortunately got the delux packet lol. I don't know if you have a hernia but try laying on your back and feeling the pulse. You said you have a pulse in the left rib cage? You should only feel the pulse little bit above your belly button. Dunno what your symptoms are but check it out, better safe than sorry. Try sleeping on your back if you can, and have a nice breakfast in the morning so you aren't on an empty stomach :) if you need help with anything just ask and I'll do my best to help you

    I was convinced I had a Hiatal hernia. I had acid reflux, upper abdominal aches(around the diaphragm) upper abdomen tension.
    After these tests:
    1) upper GI endoscopy
    2) barium x ray test
    3) Esophageal manometry test, all ruled out I don't have a hiatal hernia.
    My Dr. Told me it was due to stress and anxiety. Which is true.
    Whenever I'm in peace, I don't have any symptoms at all.
    Even my sister, my aunt and one of my cousins have anxiety and gets the same symptoms as me whenever they're stressed

      ok so it's been confirmed then. i'm not sure if it's causing the symptoms you describe as pinching in the left upper abdomen/lower chest tho. Have not had a lot of patients say that specifically. Most have reflux, or some vague upper abdominal pain.

    Hello Dr. I cannot find any info online about this, so I thought I would ask. How do I know if I have A hiatal hernia or GERD? I’m scheduled to have a LINX surgery, as I do have a weak LES. But I kind of want to just get my 2cmm sliding hernia fixed first to see if it’ll resolve my issues first. If it doesn’t, then do the linx. Please help me with your opinion. I really need help deciding 😢 thanks 🙏🏼
