One good advice is to start taking stool softener days ahead of surgery. I was constipated for the first 2 days until the stool softener kicked in, after taking after surgery. The pain meds cause constipation.

I wish I had started before the day of my surgery for sure. I'm going to try and keep my portions smaller and eat the most nutritious foods I can for the next few days because I know these pain meds are going to constipate me.

Thanks for this comment. This is critical. I became quite backed up ostensibly due to the pain medication. I take Metamucil before bed and a few sips of milk of magnesia in the morning and have had no problem since. I am back to normal with BM each morning as I was before the procedure (s)

From the United States here in California this week I had the umbilical hernia operation. I really had no pain and no aching. Just a little tenderness at the robotic operation site at the belly button in tenderness. These are all good recommendations from the doctor and the bottom line is follow their instructions and you will heal correctly. Avoid the heavy lifting. Great recommendations. Well done.

I noticed a hernia bulge in my groin about 4 years ago and it just gotten bigger and bigger. It got really uncomfortable these last couple of weeks and I am grateful for my surgeon to eventually saying that he thinks it needs to be repaired because up until now he said he does not feel it is critical for hernia to be repaired. After surgery I immediately felt better and today is second day after that and I am still feeling better, it's almost like I used to feel. I felt slowly worse and worse the longer I had the hernia and at the end I was totally feeling horrible. I am very grateful to my surgeon and surgeons overall for being able to help us heal from this. I thank God for this. Thank you.

I had inguinal hernia surgery on June 29th 2022. What are the proper procedures for getting in and out of the bed during the first week after hernia surgery? I received laproscopic surgery with mesh for left and right inguinal and ventral hernia. I received no instructions for getting in and out of bed. It was very painful especially getting out of bed as required to move around, go to the bathroom, etc. It felt like I was causing harm when getting out of the bed. I am now 8 days post op and feeling much better. Hopefully I caused no harm. The act of getting in and out of bed during the first 5 days after surgery was very painful and stressful. Thanks for your videos. My doctor should recommend your videos to future patients.

Great information. I had an inguinal repair two weeks ago and had issues with constipation and also almost unbearable pain whilst sitting on the toilet. I was only given any information about diet and exercise after asking for it. A stool softener from a shop or pharmacy definitely helped the constipation side of things and the pharmacist explained the necessity of increased intake of fluid, fibre and fruit. Still on painkillers but things are getting better gradually but then I'm in the older age group. Gentle exercise and patience. If you're not given advice then ask for it. I hope this helps anyone who has or is going for a hernia operation.

Thank you doctor for the best advice and information.
I’ve recently developed a hernia on my right groin, which isn’t big at all (grape size) called a sports hernia which I can push it back in but doctor told me I need surgery to fix it.
I’m a gym guy been doing it for many years without issues, I’m 32 now and never thought i could get such thing.
Now I’m waiting for surgery date, I cannot wait for full recovery so I can go back to my normal day to day activities and training.
Also there is some heridarity from my family side with hernia.
I’m not scared at all, I had an appendix surgery when I was a kid so this one can’t be as bad.

Very useful video. Surgeons, due to their hectic schedule often find it hard to explain to patients all aspects pertaining to the surgery and the care they should take for the surgery to be fully successful.

No, due to their lack of wholistic patient focus. It is unbelievable they do not have a pre prepared written guide both pre op and post op and makes a mockery of modern medicine putting patient care first. Some of those surgeons at the same time are amazing body panel beaters and mechanics
