Thankyou for the clear info. I had no warning and straight into emergency. 17 days later came out of hospital with a stoma. Then 8 months later had a reversal opp. So about 14 months before I had recovered. Not an experience I would wish on anyone. Doctors and nurses were terrific. I was 77 at the time and otherwise in good health.
    Cheers from Australia.

My husband developed a colo-rectal fistula from diverticulitis and he was scheduled for surgery. However, by the time the surgery was going to take place he had not had symptoms for months. I asked the docs, if it could have healed on its own, as I had put him on a soft diet and gave him aloe juice. They all said no, it could not heal. We finally insisted on another pet scan and low and behold, the fistula had healed over!!!!!! These anecdotal stories count!!!!

Excellent video Doc. I’m 57 but had my first bout of DV at 44. I had none of the typical triggers; I was/am fit, exercise regularly, eat well (but do eat red meat), drank plenty of fluids, and never had any “going” problems. I do have relatives who had it early so suspect there’s a genetic link. Currently on my second bout in 60 days and on Cipro & Metro (I really don’t want to take Cipro given the potential side effects and I hate destroying my biome). Surgery was recommended in ‘18 but I’ve been working on diet to delay. Very informative video for us sufferers so thank you.

@@gloriaolvera3342 Hi, sorry to hear you're in the ER. I'd listen to your doctor because I don't know the severity of your situation. However, I prefer Amoxicillin as I believe (at least for me) that it has less side-effects and it works for me (but does take a little longer). I want to stay away from Fluoroquinolone antibiotics because, again for my body, I get the side-effects and those side-effects seem to last. If you're in the hospital then you might have severe pain and/or potential for perforation which could lead to sepsis. They may need to clear your infection fast and Cipro might be the best route. I would just do your homework in terms of future use of those types. I have found that going on a liquid diet at the first sign of pain, using stool softeners for 2-3 days, and some light walking really helps me past any flare-ups. Best of luck to you.

I had a bout with diverticulitis two years ago. Terrible pain and ended up going to the ER. I was given IV Toradol and it dramatically reduced the pain. CT scans followed, and the diagnosis was confirmed. After waiting several hours for additional lab results to come back, I was sent home with prescriptions for TMP-SMX, metronidazole and Percocet. I was also instructed to take the narcotics if needed, otherwise try Tylenol and Advil together for any pain.
As it turns out, the TMP-SMX and metronidazole went a long way towards addressing both pain and inflammation, so I ended up not needing the narcotic medication I was prescribed. The next day, I was feeling tons better, and by the second day, more or less back to normal.

I've dealt with this for 3 decades. Numerous hospitalizations, perforations, abscesses, serious infections, twice leading to peritonitis. It nearly killed me twice. My diet was pretty restricted. I had to avoid anything with seeds or other types of non-soluble fiber. I was pretty careful and still ended up hospitalized 2-3 times a year. Finally, in 2014, surgeons removed 25 centimeters of my sigmoid colon. It stopped the infections, but now l often deal with alternating constipation and diarrhea. I haven't discovered a diet that balances things out for a sustained period, but I'm grateful to not be in constant agonizing pain.

Your video explained more to me of the various types of diverticular disease than I was aware. One point however…I think twice mistakenly during your video you mentioned ‘ascending’ colon when you meant to say ‘descending’ and that could lead some people to become confused, e.g. Judy Carter’s comment. Overall, fantastic though. P.S. I still want to know how the two sections of colon were actually anastomosed? Maybe I should remain ignorant on that subject? :-)

Thank you so much for asking & it just shows just how kind I’m certain that you are for asking, “what’s up guys”, because it’s been a long hard week already and it’s only Tuesday can you imagine that but since you asked, “what’s up guys” I will certainly tell you that things could be better but then they could be worse also and isn’t that always the case with life ha ha no matter what’s happening it could always be worse and no matter what is happening it could always be better, although there was one time, in fact actually there’s been a few times in my life where when somebody ask me “what’s up” I could actually tell him that things couldn’t be better, “what’s up” is that things are going so well but then I stop and think you know I suppose something else great could happen and things could even be better so to answer your question “what’s up guys”, I’ll begin by saying things are actually looking up kind of like Paul McCartney wrote that “everything is looking better” and then the severely negative John Lennon wrote, “couldn’t get much worse“, which means obviously that Paul McCartney was an optimist and John Lennon was a pessimist and we all certainly all know that therefore if you were to ask them “what’s up guys” considering they are two people which certainly fills out the definition of guys plural, they would say what they said in that song which they wrote many songs in their career but can you believe they only wrote Beatle songs or actually all the Beatles songs they wrote were before they were 30 years old which really is astonishing therefore if you were to ask them “what’s up guys” they would have been all over the road from the beginning to the end of the Beatles career yet you ask me “what’s up guys” and I can tell you that things are looking pretty good, I’ll come back later to finish answering your question but thank you so much for asking that question.

Thank you for this insightful video, I am based in the UK, just over a year ago around Christmas my stomach felt bloated and I had a loss of appetite, my stools became black and smelly, then I started passing blood. My Dr recommended I see a specialist and an appointment was made, however, two days later I collapsed and haemorrhaged through my backside, my wife called an ambulance and I was rushed to hospital my BP also crashed they said. I was in hospital for four days, I have no idea what medication I was given, in hospital I had the camera down my throat but all was clear. I was released from hospital and booked in for the camera up the other end, I have to say I was stoic and watched the procedure via monitors, I was impressed how clean my 62 year old colon looked, it was spotless! However, the Dr said there where signs of Diverticulitis but no signs of a haemorrhage, to sum this up I really have not got to the bottom of this (pardon the pun) my GP hasn't really explained to me what happened it would be interesting on your thoughts.

I'm worried that I may need further surgery as laxatives are not relieving the issue. What should I expect? Is this surgery as invasive as the actual bowel removal? Which was horrendous. Thank You

I appreciate the information you shared. This is so frustrating for so many people, because of so much misinformation or rather all information is different from everyone. So what is your consensus on coffee being a component for a flare up? or rather not coffee itself but CAFFEINE? and what about dairy? is it possible for that to be a component for a flare up? MY flare ups for diverticulitis are always on the right side with pain...I dont eat seeds or corn....i eat alot of salads and typically have baked chicken, peel and apple and chop up on it, goat cheese, and pecans. Love carne asada tacos...typically eat one meal a day. I do have comfort morning and evening drinks like coffee with heated milk, Chai, but when i think about flare ups and what I had... its hard and coffee and dairy are always in the mix. I take alot of magnesium daily, along with many other supplements. Wich brings me to another question!!! OK...because I take so many supplements, I often wonder with the diverticulosis pockets could any of those supplements get lodged in the pockets causing an infection ?? tthank you for your time and thoughts you may share .

@@karensimons6313 The most important thing is your diet. Four years ago when I had diverticulitis after eating a bunch of dried figs. I was prescribed specific antibiotics for 9 days and was told to be on a liquid diet for a week. I started to feel much better than I went on a planned trip to Europe. Since I felt much better, I started to eat regular food (after 2 weeks)and got another bout of diverticulitis. I was very constipated and felt really tired. I went to see an excellent gastrologist doctor, who prescribed antibiotics again and told me to stay on liquid diet and wrote down everything I should stay away from. Number one was seeds, meaning no strawberries, blueberries raspberries figs, popcorn tomatoes etc, drink at least 2 liters of water. And the same exact happened for the third time, after one week, felt better started to eat regular food. ( minus seeds) Went back to the same doctor, who finally explained to me that I had to be on a liquid diet for much longer, like a month. It was difficult because I was in Europe staying at my relatives home. We started to make vegetable soups with a little chicken for protein and blended them in a blender, and natural gelatin with organic syrup, zero solid foodstuffs. After 2 weeks I ate like an egg and a few soft foods BUT CHEW THEM THOROUGHLY TO MAKE THEM LIQUID IN MY MOUTH. I came back home to US and continued same. All this took over one month, finally started to eat regular food except ALL SEEDS. After 4 years, 3 weeks ago I got diverticulitis again. Kept the same procedure and now started to eat soft foods meaning no beef except ground and of course no seeds or nuts or corn, which I never eat anyhow. Even though it’s been a year since you wrote your comment, I hope this is helpful to you, and you’re staying healthy

I'm not a doctor but have this condition. Increase fiber intake and drink lots of water. I have to avoid pecans and of course lots of seeds such as pomegranates. That is what first sent me to ER. I must keep things moving softly not to impact the colon. I also do a 24 hour liquid diet every two weeks or so to let my colon have a rest digesting and clean out.
