Right now, I'm going through an incident of diverticulitis............somewhat of a piercing pain at the very bottom of my intestines........like you want to go to the restroom, but nothing happens. Once it occurs, definitely, avoid seeds, nuts and popcorn until you're okay. I've found the best way to "heal" is to be on the "Ensure" diet (liquids only.......nothing solid......maybe bananas after a couple of days).
I have a diverticulosis, so after many years of suffering I decided to avoid a gluten! Only gluten free food. So now I forgot all my problems, no antibiotics anymore)))
I have a history of diverticulitis which has been under control for years. After listening to this video I decided to try popcorn again. OMG... I am in agony... it took a few days before I felt the throbbing which has become full flared and very painful. I know how to take care of this... I go on just liquids for about three days and give my colon a rest. Just a warning to others who may want to try popcorn again. Not worth the pain. Thanks for all your valuable info that I have applied to my life. Feeling better. Losing weight slowly. Keep up the good work.
Same here history of 6 bouts over 5 years hadnt had a flare in over a year and hadnt had popcorn in over 4 years Ate some popcorn and within a week hospitalized for the first time in 7 bouts. Bonus Abscess to go with Most expensive bag of popcorn ever! Not a coincidence
Thank you for the truth. MGH gave me a printout on Sept 1, 2023 telling me to avoid nuts seeds and popcorn. And to eat more fruits and vegetables. Nothing about eating fermented foods.
I totally agree that stress can be a trigger. I got stressed out and ate foods with corn and had a terrible episode. I firmly believe stress was the cause.
I’ve been dealing with diverticulitis for 14 years and just recently went to urgent care to get some antibiotics and that doctor brought up to avoid seeds. Some still mention that. My general doctors response is no one really know what’s causing it. I gave up popcorn several years ago and I still get 2 or 3 attacks each year. I’ve been told you need a high fiber diet, I’ve be told you should avoid a high fiber diet. No one seems to have a glue!
Thank you! I’m a retired RN and always felt like that advice seemed off. My husband has had diverticulosis for years and the doctors kept telling him the same thing. I’m so glad to give my husband this information and free him from this lie!
@@isaacreyes7589 Thanks, I had acute diverticulitis at 77. A stoma etc and reversal opp after 8 months. Neither overweight, a smoker and only ate quality meat. Told that the reason was age and only change to my healthy diet was whole grain bread as against wholemeal. The other advise was avoid constipation and get sensible exercise. I would not wish this on anyone, !st Opp emergency. 17 days in Hosp, Second 8 hrs surgery and 10 days in hospital. 13 Months overall before i could say I had recovered. \ The fact that I had no other issues helped me through the process. Hope this is of interest. Cheers from Australia. ........ Also a special cheer for nurses. You are special people.
It’s not a lie, maybe a few buts but too many and I’m in agony. Please listen to lived experience as I’m sure a dietitian has evidence based research but there are too many of us with scary nut experiences.
Hi! I agree with the above commenter. It’s not necessarily a lie. I can eat popcorn once in awhile. I can also eat nuts that are soft like walnuts, but I’ve tried raw almonds a couple times and have always messed me up. I think it depends on the person and their body.
KenDBerryMD I have read that fresh fruit and veggies dont need insulin from our pancreas to digest Because it has its own live enzymes so .this how I believe My problem has always been not been consistent and stay on track .I have never been able to follow directions on a diet or taking medications . I feel I must have. ADD or AHD. Or all of the D's ..the first time at 14 yrs old wanted to go away and swallow my grandfathers. Medications. Nothing happen . just resent thinking back I realize that. The meds where about 5 to 6 years old That is why nothing happen. I allso. Wander if it was hunger or really wanted to go away ... Know is difficult for me to be consistent. Taking. My meds as well as giving up some food .... How ever don't anderstand why not ...did fasting for years as a little kid... What you think Dr. Berry
What about gout? I’ve heard that too much meat can cause a gout flair up. We are going to convert to Keto, but I don’t want my husband to start getting gout. A few of his friends get it, and it’s miserable for them. What can they do? What can we do to avoid it?
Next you're going to blame in-grown toe nails on work boots. Most folks DO NOT eat processed foods in our generation, we were raised correctly. Blame that issue on the next generation.
Nuts and seeds are not all they are lying about, they are lying about the big bang, evolution and the age of man. We didn't get our big brain by eating certain foods because Adam and Eve were smarter than you and I. They were able to talk, walk and name all the animals without any training.
I had my first bought.of diverticulitis in 2010. At the time I was monitoring clinical trials for Crohns Disease and was in many GI clinics. I polled the GI docs on this issue (plus berries) and about half said no correlation and the other half said it "can't hurt" to stay away from those foods. I stayed away and had a terrible time for years. I went Keto, eating the nuts seeds and berries and not a problem since!
Explain then after a week of binging on Thai peanut chicken salad, strawberries and everything bagel seasoning on everything all week I had an attack that caused severe abdominal pain. I didn’t consider what I’d been eating but it made so much sense.
My Dad had surgery for diverticulitis in the 1970's. (He was not overweight nor did he smoke.) I remember the family sitting, watching a tv show & eating the kernels off of the popcorn so that he could have a tiny bowl of just the white puff of the corn. He was so grateful! My grandmother would laboriously peel the seeds off of strawberries for him & he would blissfully have that bit of fruit with some cream. His doctor was ahead of the curve and reversed that directive in the '90s. I still remember Dad's joy in eating fresh, whole strawberries and a big bowl of popcorn for the first time in 20 years! Medical science marches on. Thanks for jogging this sweet little memory.
Karen - isn’t it just so nice when a video or even another comment triggers a memory of a loved one ? I had that happen to me just the other day - made me remember something about my mom that I had forgotten - and our memories keep our loved ones alive in our hearts ❤️
I listened to this and it confuses me. Just had a bout with this disease, I do not smoke, no diabetes, eat very little processed food. I am overweight by 25 pounds but I do not think that would put me as obese. This happened to me a year and a half ago also. Cannot see a pattern of what set it off and everyone you speak with says it is different for them. Frustrating, I feel like I do not know what I can or cannot eat.
My penpal has this condition and she is skinny as a stick (underweight actually) she never smoked and she certainly doesn't eat processed meats.. She does have tons of food allergies and scent sensitivity. And her coworker had this too. The coworker ate the wrong thing and her gut had split open & she had died?? She does have a connective tissue disorder. That can affect the gut and lots of other systems in the body.
LOVE IT! My mother is 90 and won't eat strawberries, which she loves, because her doctor told her that eating anything with seeds will cause or contribute to diverticulitis. I need to show her this.
Before you show her, I am 68, have had it for about 15 years. Everytime I eat strawberries... I get an attack. I love them too, that's how I kmow. Ive had several outbreaks due to strawberries.
Doctors also told my son this same information. I know it's not true but I can't convince my son, he tells me that I'm not a Doctor and he chooses to believe them instead of me...
Dr. Berry, when I first started watching your videos I liked what you had to say but I watched a lot of other experts' videos too. After a while, I started ignoring others' videos where I found I couldn't depend on what they were saying, and I whittled down my expert list to you and one or two others. I've been watching you now for about two years and I feel that you are not only my favorite expert but I kind of also feel like you're my friend. I know you don't know me from Adam but thanks, Dr. Berry. Thank you very much for everything. Oh, and BTW, I had already done all my own research on this subject years ago as I was tired of the contradictory info out there. You are spot on! (As all Dr.s should be!)
So grateful for this video. My daughter’s best friend (40 yrs old) spent a few hours last night at her local hospital ER and received this diagnosis. Never heard of it b4 but thank you again - I’ll pass this along.
I’m confused too . I was hi fiber and ended up with worse episode of diverticulitis last week ( in the ER with CT Scan with really bad infection ) I’m going low fiber , avoiding constipation with hi quality olive oil in my daily veg smoothie for now. No more cup daily broccoli and celery stalks with almond butter . I’ll eat broccoli sprouts and I figure something out to put my almond butter on .
High Fiber can be good. If you’re having constipation a lot.? But that’s all well it’s cracked up to be either. That can pose health risks as well. The best diate is a Balanced diet! If you get your fiber and cake, you don’t have to drink eight glasses of water, they said but you only need a few especially if you’re eating vegetables and fruits because there is water in them and like Water Mellon . It’s eaten by a lot of people in the summer.
Had always constipation and recently gone Through a big surgery to remove a part of my Colon . Constipation is the Reason for Most problem of the Colon.
Haven't been having any stomach issues at all. Last week i had fresh strawberrys, almonds and walnuts. Had some flare ups for 3 days. They went away. Had the same three foods yesterday - just got out of the hospital and was diagnosed with diverticulitis. So yes, my issue is nuts and seeds.
If you have diverticulosis meeting you have with little growths on your colon. Eating seeds or. Nuts Can cause Diverticulitis. The chances are great but it can happen. You could eat something with seeds or nuts for you to pray fine. Well very well thanks Kim Little lies to him diverticuli carving of the swell becomes diverticulitis, and that I can call you all a pain bleeding from the rectum will your store. If it’s pink beloved fast OK love means it’s coming from the area around the colon or rectum. This man made this in 2017. It’s now 2024. You could keep a Journal of what you eat and then if you get pain and a little bright red blood, it’s coming ,most likely from you colon. A seed or little bits of nuts can get stuck in the diverticulitis , that can also get infected and cause fever and nausea and stomach issues. So, I don’t know what this Gentleman is saying.? You could have a form of Allergies to nuts as well. Nobody knows you better than your own soccer ever replace that with people online. I hope you feel better my friend.
Just my personal opinion, after about 20 years of GI Nursing. Constipation is the biggest culprit.Impacted stool in diverticuli for prolonged periods leads to inflammation and or infection. Instructions I give to patients is constipation prevention. Plenty of fluids, fiber and fitness (staying active).
100 percent concur,. As someone who's suffered bouts of this,. It was most frequent and severe while on pain meds that caused constipation.. Condition abated when I came off the meds.
Dirk Moore Singapore study of about 67 people who suffered from constipation were told to avoid fiber as much as possible for 2 weeks. After the two weeks of zero fiber, patients were told to try to keep their fiber as low as possible. Patients were their own control. Follow up at 1 month and 6 months showed constipation dropped to zero. Perhaps the advice to consume more fiber is the wrong advice.
@@naps3386 Thank you for this. 3 months is my longest bout of constipation (absolute zero down the pan, I kid you not 😫) I've been convinced that fiber isn't my friend. I pushed and pushed (excuse the pun) and finally got 2 tests, a transit test and colonoscopy.. that was 10 mths ago, can't get any result from them.. I can't, and they, the UK doctors don't.., give a shit! So the weight can't budge. 😭 I carry on experimenting by myself. X
I've heard that it's the undigested high carbs is what caused the diverticulosis because lack of enzymes, because these high carbs ferment causing extra gas, blowing out the pouches.
In 2017 my husband almost died complications of Diverticulitis. Didnt know that he had diverticulitis. Other health issues played apart of this. We were told no seeds & nuts. Since then he has not had any thing with seeds & nuts. Nervous about him eating these. It was scary.
I've been diagnosed with diverticulitis, never smoked, packaged processed meats was eaten sparingly (mostly at a gathering) and I'm not over weight. I was told to avoid all nuts and seeds, spicy and greasy foods. I understand that these foods DOESN'T cause diverticulosis but it sure does irritate it!😢
Everytime my mother ate strawberries she had a flare up. Every time!!!! She never smoked, was never overweight, she did eat processed meats. Processed meats may have caused it, but she never had a flare up after eating it, only the strawberries, nuts and seeds. We don't all respond the same way. We all need to pay attention to our own bodies, I have reactions that others don't have. I believe it's an error to tell everyone with diverticulitis to just eat the nuts and seeds without testing it for themselves.
It's probably not the seeds that cause flare ups. For instance strawberries might cause a FODMAP reaction that coincides with the fact that the food has seeds. Correlation is not causation, right? So the strawberries might have caused her reaction but not the seeds.
Dr. Berry, could you please do another video on Diverticulitis? Seems a lot of us are suffering from it. I'm sure from the past diets. Currently I have been BBB&E for 9 months. No cheating. I did this for my RA which I put in remission on month 3. But I just had my first Diverticulitis attack 2 weeks ago after getting sick twice with colds in the Fall. I was on a zpack in Nov and now back to back 2 antibiotics with the Diverticulitis flare : (
Dr Berry I know that this is an old video with new information. A month ago I ended up in the ER with lower gut pain...thinking it was a UTI or bladder infection./ 65 yr old woman and the doc asked if anyone ever told me I had divertuculosis. I said no. Well turns out I had a diverticulitis attack. I have fallen off the Keto diet a year ago and am trying to return by growing an organic garden with blueberries, strawberries black and raspberries. My diet HAD returned to eating processed foods(some : Ice cream, tortillas, some processed meat: bologna, salami❤ and esp. bacon❤ ) I want to trust,... and I know that I already have some food allergies including wheat, grains and shellfish. Should I eliminate the corn (and definitely wheat) based on this info? I do love nuts and seeds. And...is carnivore an option for people like me? The pain seemed worse that childbirth UGH! BTW thank you for these videos, I did read the study.
My mother was in the beginning of her 3rd week on keto. She weighed herself and was disheartened to see that she hadn’t lost any weight yet, then a few days later she began having some abdominal discomfort and cramping. She said she had eaten nuts and that the diet gave her a “diverticulitis attack” so she decided to stop altogether. It is unfortunate that she didn’t do some research before making this decision. I believe she was experiencing symptoms of electrolyte imbalance and the need for more fat and green leafy fiber in her diet. I attempted to explain this to her but she didn’t seem to believe me. Sometimes it’s hard to teach a loved one a new concept or idea when they have been so used to the same information for so long. It’s hard when we have the best intentions but we have to kind of tone down our excitement and enthusiasm in order for our loved ones to take us seriously when we are going up against the old medical establishment that me and my dad were trained in as RNs. I graduated in 2005, had one nutrition class and learned about the food pyramid and also that nuts, seeds and popcorn cause diverticulitis. My father who graduated in 1991, was taught even more dated information. These are the nurses out there in the hospitals and doctors offices taking care of us and counseling us on diet in 2019. This is who my mom is sitting next to at home as she complains of stomach pain after eating a portion of nuts and seeds. My dad, the late 80’s/early 90’s trained nurse is telling her “it’s diverticulitis. Stop this crazy diet! Look what it’s doing to you. Eat some pasta already!” Oy! Am I a little disappointed my mother won’t be getting the great benefits of keto and taking this journey alongside me (I’m in week 7, feel great, down 15lbs!), yes, but it is her decision and I will always love and support her.
My mother who died 2 months short of 100 Worried that celery strings will give you appendicitis and in those days people could very well die from it so our celery was very well cleaned. One of the RUclips doctors, it could’ve been Dr. Gundry, who talks about leaky gut said that really rough Seeded bread could damage your intestines. The only time I got diverticulosis was when we bought a 25 pound bag of raw peanuts and I was really working my way through them until I had to go to the emergency room. I was given an antibiotic and was pain-free by the time I got home so I don’t know what it was. We gave the remaining peanuts away. I have a problem with any kind of nut, I just can’t eat a handful.
My son was healed from that with spelt flour instead of flour or oats. Fibermucil, and all kinds of fruits, nuts and grains blended as a shake or in bread or pancakes. It took a couple of years but he has no diverticulitis anymore.
Thank you so much for this informative video. My Mom and I just started on the keto diet and she has been able to reduce her Metformin back to the original dose while lowering her blood glucose numbers every day. She hasn't even been on it a whole month yet. She is feeling worlds better (higher dosage of Metformin was making her sick) and loosing weight and inches fast! The one thing she keeps asking me and has been worried about seeds hurting her diverticulosis. Now I can show her this video and ease her fears!!! Keep up the good work!
27, very thin, no smoking and drinking ever. Got painful diverticulitis after eating a surplus of strawberries at a restaurant. Also had been eating lots of raw jalapeños with seeds in them for months prior
I just developed diverticulosis and when I told my doctor that I had like six months on the keto diet and she told me to give it up. She said no more meats only veggies and fruits and lots of water 💦 even though I dropped about 45 lbs. no longer prediabetic... So everyone is sending me mix messages. Please help out... anyone PLEASE HELP THIS IS TOTALLY CONFUSING 😮
Dr. berry has a warning that what he says is not intended as medical advise. So maybe listen to your doctor that actually sees patients. You can check Dr. Montgomery Baxter, on RUclips. He has an active practice where he treats patients with diet and lifestyle changes.
Sometimes I despair about the lack of scientific influence in US medical training. In 1978 I was told that the presence of an occassional seed in a diverticulum does NOT imply causation. What went wrong?
OK you made this video in 2017 I got diagnosed with diverticulitis in 2020 and my Gastrologist I had then told me I couldn’t eat this I couldn’t eat seeds I couldn’t eat nuts or popcorn. I went to the ER with another flareup six days ago and the doctor the head doctor she told me the exact same thing it’s a myth. So I’ve been avoiding things that I’d like for two years. God bless you & thanks! 😀
Going to read the study with my husband who was given this advice as well as suggestions about possible prophylactic surgery if another flare up happens. He is losing weight with me on a keto meal plan. . Dr Berry you are truly enhancing our lives even as far as Berlin Germany. 🦋🙏
My mom worked for a gastroenterology lab preparing the specimens. She said in all her years, she never saw any seeds. I did a few rotations as a nurse in the GI side of the hospital. I never saw any seeds in the inflamed diverticula.
Im a nurse too but also get a serious attack if I eat too many nuts so please be careful with your statements as being a nurse your claims will be taken more seriously. Yes, small amounts of nuts maybe ok but what’s too much if already tired, stressed or dehydrated. We are all individuals and lived experience will often outweigh research.
I'm a vegetarian, not overweight and I don't smoke. I recently had my first bout with diverticulitis. It was no joke. Perforated my colon. I believe constipation was the culprit for me. I am now much more mindful of maintaining a high fiber diet.
WOW! Perforated my colon?? Did you have an a operation ? I also have my first attack im very confused in what to do ?? So going to the toilet 2 times a day will do the trick ?? One pear a night work extremely good ( toilet ways)!
@@sparklingvicky6670 I had all the tests, including a colonoscopy, and they showed me the pouches when I got the diagnosis. I love most healthy things and was usually eating cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels nearly every day. However, am I the only one with that diagnosis who visits the bathroom every hour, on the hour, every dam day? I’ve had to give up nearly everything I love as my bowels are loose!
Strawberries give me an outbreak! Thats a fact. A doctor told me just what youre saying, so I ate strawberries, and in a couple days, had an out break! Another doctor told me if I eat popcorn again, I should plan on surgery. I've heard both sides, but I know what effects me... I find stress to be one of the worst culprits. If you'll pay my medical bills, I'll try it, but it costs too much to get sick anymore.... I 3ave noticed over the years, if you have food in your stomach, sometimes you can get away with cheating a little. Just my experience. Thanks for your info! I do appreciate it.
I was diagnosed 3 yrs ago & was told to stop my good diet of salads, plus avoid fibre, which included nuts & seeds. Reduce red meat consumption too. I didn’t suffer any less following what was told to me, but decided to go back to same healthy foods I enjoyed. I then concentrated on total my gut health, & feel I’ve had way less issues, although I still have the occasional niggle.
Dr. Berry, avoid processed meat to avoid diverticulosis/diverticulitis flare ups? I eat a lot of bacon, is bacon considered processed meat? The internet seems to think so... Please clarify! Thanks for all you do for the keto/carnivore community.
I was recently admitted to the hospital for five days after numerous flare ups over the last eighteen months and diagnosed with this ailment. That said, I'm the right weight for my height, don't smoke, and rarely ever eat processed meat considering I'm a deer hunter and process my own, so I hope to use the process of elimination to figure it out. Thanks for the info.
Dr Berry, I just got from the hospital after my first bout with diverticulitis. I have been Keto for 2 yrs and I am afraid that I am no longer going to be able to do that. If I can't, I know my weight is going to go back up, my A1C as well, and eventually diabetes. Please allay my fears.
@@tanyasydney2235 No can do. I sometimes struggle with Keto as it is. No way I can do carnivore. Anyway, I have found a system that has been working well.
@@7x779 Not really a system per se. I eat a serving of Two Good yoghurt a day, which has 3 carbs, for the good bacteria, and drink iced coffee almost every day. That helps regularity. Been over two years now with no problems.
I know this is an old video but since I was recently diagnosed with this, I went searching for some advice on what to eat. I am 65 and chubby but I eat a low-carb diet with protein, vegetables, low-carb fruits, eggs, etc., and very little junk food or processed food. I am wondering if this isn't truly a digestive issue caused by perhaps low stomach acid. After an overnight in the hospital and a round of antibiotics, I decided to add Kimchi, Sauerkaut, and pickles (fermented foods) in hopes that they would aid in overall digestion. I must say, the fermented foods do keep things moving!
Help! I've been on a clean keto diet and was just recently diagnosed with diverticulitis and I don't know what to eat. I'm 57 and have no other medical issues. The PA who gave me my lab results said to Google it. What? I put myself on a liquid diet to give my intestines a rest, then semi solid foods. What now? Help, PLEASE.
About 15 years ago I started having pain in my lower stomach area, and I got check out and he told me I have diverticulitis. And I remember him telling me not to eat raspberries because of the seeds. But I never payed attention to that. I just kept eating them. I just was not drinking enough liquids. Traveling to Thailand I notice that I start to have some pain. But the airflight and different foods must be the reason. In a few days it goes away. Drinking liquids seems to help me the most,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Research that was done by placing inflated balloons in the colon and measuring the pressure created by segmentation indicated that diverticular form because of a lack of sufficient bulk in the colon during segmentation. The powerful contractions working against insufficient bulk , (fiber), create a pressure so high that it causes the colonic walls to blow out. In other words eating those seeds and nuts which contain a good bit of fiber actually help prevent diverticulitis , not cause diverticulitis.
I'm 31 and just was released from the hospital after being kept for 4 days getting IV antibiotics for Diverticulitis {I thought i had appendicits is why i went to the ER} but the thing was every night for a week prior i was eating 5 oz of nut mix {walnuts, almond's,peacan's} then i got a flare up but i didn't even know i had this condition to began with so this is a crazy coincidence.
I'm currently healing from divertiulitis and I can say that the only change to my diet I had the past few months was adding peanuts daily. I think it must have contributed to my flare. Never had it before and never ate peanuts regularly before.
I had a bout of diverticulitis back in 2006 from eating over-ripe peaches. My doctor was puzzled--he told me it was from eating nuts and seeds. I told him I didn't eat any of that.
My uncle was diagnosed with Diverticulitis and was told the cause was from the seeds. That was 2 years ago and since that time, I make a practice of removing tomato seeds and just straining it to take the juice. I'm just having a problem on how to eat a guava though, for it's almost all seeds. 😃 Thank you very much for this information.
Omg this happened to me too at exactly 2:30 am 2 nights in a row . I thought I was having an ovarian cyst burst . Went to OBGYN and they said nope . I’m now thinking this is it .
As a person who has had diverticulitis and hospitalized for it many times, I can attest that I was told that same lie. The last few times I was in the hospital, I mentioned that, and the doctor said "We're getting away from that idea. We're finding that not to be true anymore..." As you said. Then, on the same day of being discharged, a dietician told me the lie. I can say that I do have a coincidental flare up after eating popcorn. I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't do recreational drugs or otherwise, except as needed by a doctor, or OTC aspirin, Tylenol, Naproxen. I can also say that I am overweight, and when I eat popcorn or cashews, I do have a flareup and definitely avoid them while I am having a flareup.
@@anoodono1841 As they study and research more information comes to light. I was told that the husks from the popcorn kernels get stuck in the pouches of the colon, much like they get stuck in your teeth and irritate the gums, even cutting them. Then you can't get rid of them and they start to get infected. A flare up. So then you have to have antibiotics to kill the infection until it breaks down enough to get out of there. Same way with nut fragments that don't break down. They just get caught. I don't think they're safe, nor unsafe, though they're not supposed to be in the human diet anyway. It's just that the forbidden foods are always more tasty and the fact that they're forbidden makes them all that much more desirable. Oy vey...
Same. I think it's fair to say, respectfully, that different people different reasons for flare ups. I haven't had one in 5 years. I went and got a bag of mixed nuts and 24 hours later. Boom the worst attack ever. In hospital for 4 days. I will increase fiber. And drink more water. Coincidence or not, I'm never eating nuts again
I absolutely love your channel Dr Berry BUT my fiance was recently diagnosed with diverticulosis and he eats sunflower seeds and he has had major diverticulitis flair ups after eating them. I kept telling him to stop eating them because that was his issue but he didn't listen until one day he realized....I ate seeds and a couple of hours later I'm having gut pain and later that night and the next day rectal bleeding, maybe I shouldn't eat them anymore. I think, just like everything else you teach, its about listening to your body and the signals it's giving you and in his case it definitely was seeds that caused his issues.
By the way he is not overweight, he is not a smoker and very rarely eats processed meat just to rule those out. I realize my comment may come across as argumentative and I don't mean to I'm just trying to make sense of this with his symptoms. Would love your thoughts. Thanks you
@@stephaniebourque7206 I was diagnosed with diverticulosis New Year's Eve 2012 after being rushed to the hospital. My flare ups are caused by wheat, rice and corn products. I do not digest these grains for some reason and they cause a blockage, severe lower left abnominal pain, fever, chills, sometimes vomiting. I have to take Flagyl and Cipromax to kill the infection and go on a strict liquid diet for about 7-10 days as well as chug a bottle of magnesium citrate to liquify whatever is trapped in my colon so I can clear it out. I eat Sunflower seeds almonds and chunky peanut butter almost everyday. They never give me a diverticulitis flare up, but if I have flour tortillas regular bread, pasta, rice, corn, grits, pancakes, cookies..... It's almost a garauntee that it will cause a flare up.
@@moniquedarquea2147 just like you I was rushed to the hospital in 2008 when I was just 30. The pain felt so bad I thought I was going to die the only thing that has ever brought tears to me in my adult life. It's been 10 years now I haven't eaten any popcorn or any seeds or nuts I haven't had any issues but oh how I miss popcorn even that is not worth that pain that I will never forget.
@@moniquedarquea2147exactly. My mom ate tortillas, beans, pasta cooked with vegetable oils and bread and smoked. She got diverticulitis . She was overweight.
@KenDBerryMD - I've gone ahead and read the 2008 study from JAMA. One point of confusion for me is that the study states at the beginning of the study none of the patients had diverticulitis. It then continues to detail the inverse of the 800ish patients that developed diverticulitis, the ones that ate less seeds and nuts were a higher percentage of the 800ish patients. Question, for someone that already has diverticulitis, what are the concerns (if any) of eating nuts and seeds? From reading the study, in appears to only focus on individuals that don't already have diverticulitis and when they do eat nuts and seeds does that cause the disease. However, it doesn't appear to address the question of someone already having the pouches due to diverticulitis and if eating nuts and seeds they can get caught in the pouches. I appreciate the help, if you see this comment.
yes nuts and seeds cause this. i have 3 bouts with this and ever time it happened after i hate nuts or seeds and popcorn,, people stay away from nuts and seeds
Yo. Thank you for this. I’ve had everyone and their mother try to tell me to stop eating nuts and seeds because of my diagnosis. And I’ve never had a problem with nuts and seeds.
Dr. Berry, thanks for everything you are doing to help folks. Love the info! In the future could you address bone/heel spurs: causes, prevention, treatment? Thanks again and best wishes
Hi frank, I read a while ago ( sorry, I can't remember where!) that the Spurs are formed due to much acid forming in the blood. Main causes were coke consumption. The blood needs to remain at a constant acid/alkaline level, and surge like drinking coke alters this to acid. To compensate the body sucks calcium from the bones to neutralise the acid. Once this is done the blood then needs to dump any excess calcium and so forms Spurs as a result. Sticking to foods more inclined for your blood group can help avoid such ailments and basically avoid coke and high acid forming foods if your body is not a happy bunny on them..good luck.
I finally figured out too much fiber was my problem. I just barely avoided a colon resection after my first bout of diverticulitis (that I knew of). I was very sick, with sepsis. I did lots of reading after that, and learned that I needed the exact opposite of what I'd always been told -- I needed LESS fiber. I had nothing to lose, so I tried it and it worked! I still eat low glycemic veggies with my meat/protein. I believe *soluble* fiber is good for us. I also take at *least* 600 mg of magnesium (ionic drops & magnesium glycinate) every day, and drink a good bit of water and tea. No more diverticulitis! Keto, and of course carnivore, naturally lower one's fiber intake. That is proper... proper human diet! 😊
Thank you Dr. Last two years when I have been on keto and cheated with high carb food, I got diverticulitis, can you please help explain why? Normally when I am not on Keto, nothing like that happens.
All I know is that, in the one month since I've been diagnosed w/ Type 2 Diabetes, I've substituted nuts and seeds for the snack foods I used to eat regularly, and it has helped me to keep my blood sugar down...
You can call it coincedence but I have had attacks from dried figs and strawberries. Research studies aside you have never had diverticulitis or you would know to stay away from nuts and seeds.
Julie Garden I've noticed with my diverticulosis, if it's not flared up and been doing fine, I can have nuts and seeds in moderation. But... If it's acting up at all, no way Jose, they will cause pain!
I eat crunchy pb with chia and flax seed, raw almonds and sunflower seeds dailiy. I have never gotten a diveritculitis flare up from them. I do get a flare up from processed corn products like grits, any kind of rice, and all wheat products..pasta, bread, tortilla, pancakes, cookies etc
I started the keto diet, i fasted 3 days, then started keto...i have been having an attack since i started yhis diet, i am not over weight, eating keto. How do i ease this pain?
Hi Dr. Berry, you are right. I was hospitalized at the VA hospital in Houston, TX and I was diagnosed with diverticulitis, this was 7 May 2018. And just like you said, they told me that lie. It looked lime they just didn’t know what to say and came up with that crap.
Sorry to hear that you were hospitalized....I was nearly hospitalized last year with an abscess in my colon.... For me, the common denominator with triggering my diverticulitis flare-up is eating seedy vegetables.. (tomatoes, squash, zucchini) ....I am overweight (6'1" 255 lbs) I am hoping that if I lose 50 plus pounds that I can "cure" my problem...good luck, my friend. Diverticulitis really sucks.
My sister has been diagnosed with diverticulosis and the gastroenterologist told her to stop eating red meat! Are you able to let me know if this is correct?
Dr. Berry, can you make an updated video on diverticulitis and the carnivore diet? They also tell people to eat white bread, potatoes for it. Can it be healed?
I was just diagnosed with diverticulitis today...was told it was because of red meat and increased fats in my diet😮. I've been doing Keto-vore for 4 wks now. Came looking for answers from Dr. Berry.
Diagnosed with diverticulitis 3 weeks ago in an ER visit. Started Keto/Ketovore Jan 2019, so for 3 years and now I have this disease. I’m 54 female, not overweight, never smoked, and pretty fit. We do eat a lot of meat (version, beef, pork, fish, sardines, tuna) a little veg and only very occasional carbs. No seed oils, no sugar! I’m at a loss as to what has really happened and caused it.
The article is "free" if you sign in or create account. Its quicker to select, copy, & paste to a blank word document. Yea, I tried to create an account several times.
Good info! Had a friend with IBD who was told by her doctor the cause was sesame seeds. She was not "cured" by his wisdom and continued to suffer even though she never ate sesame seeds.
I just had a bout of diverticulitis last Saturday that I'm slowly recovering from. I eat a lot of vegetables but ate three green salads with real meat in two days. My brother a few years ago had it so badly that he was hospitalized and on morphine for pain. He ate green salads everyday for lunch. Is it possible lettuce could be a problem?? I should add both of us could lose 20 lbs but I wouldn't say we were very overweight.
janet williams , my first diverticulitis attack was back in 2008. That fateful meal was a salad with strawberries, walnuts, and a raspberry vinaigrette. I always thought it was the seeds and nuts. Maybe you are onto something and it the salad!
I had a serious intestinal blockage for YEARS that I attribute to not a great diet on top of having eating a WHOLE LOT of 'wineberries' when I was going through my gut-healing, at a point, my poop had wineberry seeds in it, when I hadn't eaten them in 3+ years
Those seeds that were inside you, was the source of your pain. Because your gut was damaged your body couldn't flush them out of your body. So instead they got, caught in small pouches in your intestines. Causing dreadful irritation and since it's constant your body is mounting an immune response in your gut. As an effort to try to get rid of those seeds but to no avail. Going through the same thing myself ate a strawberry donut, with the raspberry seeds inside. Although the lady failed to mention there were seeds inside that donut. Going through hell right now 😭. Still haven't passed any seeds but I have passed poo.
I had a severe case of Diverticulitis a few years back, it was so bad that I had to be on a Colostomy bag for 4 months because they had to remove a piece of my large intestine because the antibiotics were not working and infection was so bad. The doctor even removed my appendix since that area was so bad. He informed me that it was the first he had since such a severe case in his practice. So he explained to me that I had to avoid nuts and popcorn and to drink Metamucil for fiber.
I'm sitting here thinking about germinating seeds. They grow in dark moist places. It is interesting that a pouch outside of the intestines would not be passing stool the same as the rest of the intestine. It's also interesting that if I completely avoid fruit and vegetables I do not have any intestinal problems. Another interesting point is fruit juice causes absolute pain in my guts and gas. It's also interesting that the pouches could have food parts mainly from fructose and fructans that will cause fermentation.
without autopsy we dont know exactly know, maybe popcorn or seeds get into a pocket and helps prevents inflammatory substances from effecting the pocket, personally i wouldn't want popcorn lodging in my gut , perhaps seeds wash away in time.
My dad just had his second surgery and lost most of intestines due to diverticulitis and he was on Keto and was eating mixed nuts when he had blockage. Next is colonoscopy bag.
Thank God we are getting some good common sense in medical world. The other doctors will be out of a job soon and thats a good thing.I have been sick of the bs of the bs doctors for a long time.Keep up with the great info Dr.Berry we love ya.
This is so true. Had diverticulitis that went septic and spent 3-4 days in hospital. One week later I incorporated nuts in my diet everyday to which nothing ever happened. Still have nuts everyday since my septis 7yrs ago
I had eaten some popcorn, and went to lay down after (nap) and I woke up an hour later with pain on my left lower side of abdomen, I did not know what to think, the pain got worse by evening, but was not sure what was going on, I had nausea, then fever, the next morning, so went to ER, they diagnosed diverticulitis 😲. It feels like it came out of nowhere. I have not had that much pain since acute pancreatitis. They gave me antibiotics and sent me home, but did say if pain got worse to come back, I was told to avoid seeds, grains, nuts, and no popcorn. I do have the three main causes overweight (around abdomen, smoker, and bouts of constipation). I am happy If I can eat popcorn again, will avoid microwave popcorn though, as not sure what they use to make it taste like butter.
My dear husband has had severe flares after eating too many nuts. We eat a low carb, healthy diet, do not smoke or drink, and are not overweight. It has happened multiple times.
I was three weeks into carnivore when I had my first ever attack of diverticulitis. The pain and fever landed me in the ER. Both the doctors and the discharge papers from the ER specified to cut out nuts, seeds, and popcorn specifically, and to avoid red meat. I'm so confused.
Yes, me too! I’m so confused. I don’t even know what to do anymore. There’s so much conflicting information out there, but it’s terrifying to be at the hospital with this.
I have passed this info to my son who has diverticulitis and was advised to avoid those foods. Couldn't link to JAMA or NEJM without a subscription but did find a reference to it on WebMD. Thank you!
HI DR. I was told to stay away from pumpkin seeds and nuts I was told I had colitis the other day runny stool cramping left side colon swellen pain . I have no bleeding in my stool or fever whats going on please help LA CA.
But Dr., then how do I understand the fact, that when I eat- nuts, strawberries or other that have seeds, pop corn, corn or broccoli, etc. etc., I end up in the hospital (even eating rise & beans? But when I stick to certain veggie and fruit and white meat, I never get sicks? I've proof this my self, and I've had till now about 26 hospitalization and 3 perforation ( small one's) but they are reflected in the CT scan with contrast in vein? I'm driving nuts now? With all my respect, I just want to now if then I'd may be something else. But CT Scans and MRI's, don't lie. How can I then understand before end after studies. Please, your opinion is Valid. Could you let me know more, cause the facts are there. Thank You
This is not true for many people. And this information caused years of needless attacks for me. I only have attacks when I eat certain foods. For me it’s dried seeds, nuts, dried coconut or cinnamon, I start with slight cramping in my stomach or bowels. The cramps become excruciating, within an hour or two. Fever, vomiting and extreme exhaustion follow. The pain lasts for around 12 hours. I usually sleep the day after the pain ends. Fever lasts for 2 or 3 days. I will also have internal bleeding for a few days. After each episode my bowels seem to be almost paralyzed. No appetite for a day or two. Normally I have no bowel issues. If I avoid those foods no attacks. Please don’t generalize this for everyone. Had my doctor said food could trigger attacks I would have avoid these horrible attacks.
Seeds, Nuts and popcorn may not cause it, but if definitely can irritate it. Totally speaking from experience..
Totally agree as it can get stuck in the pouches
Any corn products are some if the hardest foods to digest. I felt very ill after eating popcorn two nights..i stay away fom corn products.
I agree, when I have popcorn I get a flareup. I think people react to foods as an individual.
I agree. Popcorn is nasty on the intestine.
Same here history of 6 bouts over 5 years hadnt had a flare in over a year and hadnt had popcorn in over 4 years
Ate some popcorn and within a week hospitalized for the first time in 7 bouts. Bonus Abscess to go with
Most expensive bag of popcorn ever! Not a coincidence
he is dead wrong. They absolutely cause flares.
Thank you for the truth. MGH gave me a printout on Sept 1, 2023 telling me to avoid nuts seeds and popcorn. And to eat more fruits and vegetables. Nothing about eating fermented foods.
My flare ups are almost always triggered by stress. Last one was a doozy.
So what did your husband do to help him with diverticulitis?
@@isaacreyes7589 Thanks, I had acute diverticulitis at 77. A stoma etc and reversal opp after 8 months. Neither overweight, a smoker and only ate quality meat. Told that the reason was age and only change to my healthy diet was whole grain bread as against wholemeal. The other advise was avoid constipation and get sensible exercise. I would not wish this on anyone, !st Opp emergency. 17 days in Hosp, Second 8 hrs surgery and 10 days in hospital. 13 Months overall before i could say I had recovered. \
The fact that I had no other issues helped me through the process. Hope this is of interest. Cheers from Australia. ........ Also a special cheer for nurses. You are special people.
@@isaacreyes7589 cut out the crap
It’s not a lie, maybe a few buts but too many and I’m in agony. Please listen to lived experience as I’m sure a dietitian has evidence based research but there are too many of us with scary nut experiences.
Hi! I agree with the above commenter. It’s not necessarily a lie. I can eat popcorn once in awhile. I can also eat nuts that are soft like walnuts, but I’ve tried raw almonds a couple times and have always messed me up. I think it depends on the person and their body.
Don't blame natural foods for what processed foods and their effects have caused...
KenDBerryMD
I have read that fresh fruit and veggies dont need insulin from our pancreas to digest
Because it has its own live enzymes so .this how I believe
My problem has always been not been consistent and stay on track .I have never been able to follow directions on a diet or taking medications .
I feel I must have. ADD or AHD. Or all of the D's ..the first time at 14 yrs old wanted to go away and swallow my grandfathers. Medications. Nothing happen . just resent thinking back I realize that. The meds where about 5 to 6 years old
That is why nothing happen.
Right on!!
Nuts and seeds are not all they are lying about, they are lying about the big bang, evolution and the age of man. We didn't get our big brain by eating certain foods because Adam and Eve were
smarter than you and I.

Wait so he’s supposed to eat seeds?
I have diverticulitis and drink strawberry smoothies every morning with no problems.
Doctors also told my son this same information. I know it's not true but I can't convince my son, he tells me that I'm not a Doctor and he chooses to believe them instead of me...
@@donnapollock I choose not to listen to doctors
Trust your mom to trust her gut. I have had 11 attacks and 11 hospital trips. Any time I eat seeds or nuts. Or too much harsh veges
Go Lean Protein IF and Keto and boom get hit with my first attack! High Fibre/ No Fibre! So confusing.
43 and just got diagnosed. Went keto and BOOM flare up and hospitalized. It's high fiber for me from now on
Me too. You went high fiber? Everyone is telling to go low fiber…..ugh very confusing. How’s it working out for you? I don’t have any symptoms.
Same happened to me! I went carnivore for 4 weeks and ended up in the hospital diagnosed with diverticulitis! Very frustrating and discouraging.
I'm better with no fiber
High Fiber can be good. If you’re having constipation a lot.? But that’s all well it’s cracked up to be either. That can pose health risks as well. The best diate is a Balanced diet! If you get your fiber and cake, you don’t have to drink eight glasses of water, they said but you only need a few especially if you’re eating vegetables and fruits because there is water in them and like Water Mellon . It’s eaten by a lot of people in the summer.
Had always constipation and recently gone Through a big surgery to remove a part of my Colon . Constipation is the Reason for Most problem of the Colon.
@@siminhayatifallah4075 Hey. How are you now?
I hope you feel better my friend.
same here.

Is that the go to routine now a days?
100 percent concur,. As someone who's suffered bouts of this,. It was most frequent and severe while on pain meds that caused constipation.. Condition abated when I came off the meds.
Dirk Moore Singapore study of about 67 people who suffered from constipation were told to avoid fiber as much as possible for 2 weeks. After the two weeks of zero fiber, patients were told to try to keep their fiber as low as possible. Patients were their own control. Follow up at 1 month and 6 months showed constipation dropped to zero. Perhaps the advice to consume more fiber is the wrong advice.
A friend of mine goes like clock work and never has constipation yet she has developed diverticulitis.
I used to work with a doc in endoscopy that blamed coarsely ground black pepper.
WOW! Cheap processed meats, being overweight, and smoking can lead to diverticulitis flare. Popcorn, seeds and nuts do not!! Thank you!
Heather Ruiz That's so awesome :)

Maybe you could go and ask Dr Berry when he does his lives on Monday nights put a Qqq in front of your questions. Be special
Dr. berry has a warning that what he says is not intended as medical advise.
My Dr told me nuts and seeds are no the problem, constipation is.
Scam, your doctor wants to push pills on you that's why.
I'm interested in what part of processed meat, specifically, increases the risk of Diverticulitis, and why.
My question too. Is it meat with grain and sugar added? A lot of it has that.
Some does not.
It’s the lack of fiber
I'm a vegetarian, not overweight and I don't smoke. I recently had my first bout with diverticulitis. It was no joke. Perforated my colon. I believe constipation was the culprit for me. I am now much more mindful of maintaining a high fiber diet.
whats your routine now? Still high fiber?
Cat Scans
WOW! Perforated my colon?? Did you have an a operation ? I also have my first attack im very confused in what to do ?? So going to the toilet 2 times a day will do the trick ?? One pear a night work extremely good ( toilet ways)!

I had all the tests, including a colonoscopy, and they showed me the pouches when I got the diagnosis. I love most healthy things and was usually eating cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels nearly every day. However, am I the only one with that diagnosis who visits the bathroom every hour, on the hour, every dam day? I’ve had to give up nearly everything I love as my bowels are loose!
Maybe being a vegetarian is not such a healthy diet.
I'm so at a loss, and it is so frustrating... It really sounds, though, as if you just have to pay really good attention to your own body.
A new friend sent me this. I was told to avoid seeded things. I am overweight. Had a flare up 2 weeks ago. 5 days was painful glad I've watched this.
Thanks for the info.
drinking causes this problem more than anything, trust me
Dr Berry, I just got from the hospital after my first bout with diverticulitis. I have been Keto for 2 yrs and I am afraid that I am no longer going to be able to do that. If I can't, I know my weight is going to go back up, my A1C as well, and eventually diabetes. Please allay my fears.
Go carnivore. Problem solved.
@@tanyasydney2235 No can do. I sometimes struggle with Keto as it is. No way I can do carnivore. Anyway, I have found a system that has been working well.
@@michaelsmith1262 can you share what system ?
@@7x779 Not really a system per se. I eat a serving of Two Good yoghurt a day, which has 3 carbs, for the good bacteria, and drink iced coffee almost every day. That helps regularity. Been over two years now with no problems.
Try a whole food plant based diet - so gentle on the digestive system
Some people say Apple Cider Vinegar capsule daily stopped the flare ups...
How did you go Cindy?
It is almost 2024 - 5 years ago I was diagnosed with Diverticulosis and TOLD NOT TO EAT AND NUTS, SEEDS etc😢 Thank you for this
About 15 years ago I started having pain in my lower stomach area, and I got check out and he told me I have diverticulitis.
I'm 31 and just was released from the hospital after being kept for 4 days getting IV antibiotics for Diverticulitis {I thought i had appendicits is why i went to the ER} but the thing was every night for a week prior i was eating 5 oz of nut mix {walnuts, almond's,peacan's} then i got a flare up but i didn't even know i had this condition to began with so this is a crazy coincidence.
what do you eat now and are you better
But do you drink enough water?
The first flare up I ever had was after the only time I ever ate an "Everything" begal.
I told him I didn't eat any of that.
what do you eat now and are you better
My uncle was diagnosed with Diverticulitis and was told the cause was from the seeds. That was 2 years ago and since that time, I make a practice of removing tomato seeds and just straining it to take the juice. I'm just having a problem on how to eat a guava though, for it's almost all seeds. 😃 Thank you very much for this information.
is your uncle doing better? whats his routine

Omg this happened to me too at exactly 2:30 am 2 nights in a row . I thought I was having an ovarian cyst burst . Went to OBGYN and they said nope . I’m now thinking this is it .
Happened to me starting at 7:00am ending at 10:30am 😭😭😭
Same here Cashews m Popcorn hve caused me t have a flare up. 6 years later i wonder r these 2 foods found t b safe for people with divertic...?
Oy vey...
Popcorn flares me too
I have to take Flagyl and Cipromax to kill the infection and go on a strict liquid diet for about 7-10 days as well as chug a bottle of magnesium citrate to liquify whatever is trapped in my colon so I can clear it out. Oh wow!!! This Infomation was just for me. Thank you.
I agree with you
I agree. Nuts, seeds cause this in some people. In others it doesnt. I cannot eat popcorn at all so I dont believe the findings in this study.
I had flare after adding nuts back into my diet so for me there a no no

I've had multiple people tell me black pepper, especially course ground, will cause it as well.

Association doesn't equal causation.
@@PETERJOHN101 do you have diverticulosis?
I had a serious intestinal blockage for YEARS that I attribute to not a great diet on top of having eating a WHOLE LOT of 'wineberries'
when I was going through my gut-healing, at a point, my poop had wineberry seeds in it, when I hadn't eaten them in 3+ years
Those seeds that were inside you, was the source of your pain.
