Thank you Dr. Berry! I just had a lightbulb moment. Phytic acid (never heard of it until this video) was the cause of my recent problem with constipation. I'm a 67 year old woman and I've been on keto for a year. Lost 24 pounds. I never had constipation issues until recently. The only thing that changed in my diet was that I joined in on the chaffle craze, eating them every day, and I began snacking on pecans. Chaffles are waffles made with cheese and almond flour. Almond flour and pecans have lots of phytic acid, which interferes with your body's ability to absorb magnesium. I suspect that this is what caused my constipation. Moderation...a lesson I'm still learning.

@@whatever7588 I agree with you. Most store bought peanut butters have about 5g of sugar per serving which is no more than a teaspoon. Also eating a quarter of a jar, that is a huge amount even with no sugar. From my last reply comment, i am cutting out peanut butter for recommended foods. i don't think you can eliminate sugar in peanut butter. The peanuts themselves contain the sugar which is about 2 grams. finding out: So they are not sugar free, some are just no added sugar. Sodium is very high also - anywhere from 110 to150mg.

Our ancestors had to crack open their nuts. If it takes half an hour to shell a handful you won't scoff them. Also, if you eat delicious, fresh, new-season's nuts in the shell you'll likely find you no longer want to eat the old and often rancid ones from the shops. (rancid Omega 6 oils are toxic) They're worth the effort.

I was in the grocery store last night picking up a few items and decided to take a quick look at the bulk nut/grain/candy area. Both raw macadamia nuts and raw shelled pecans were over $9 a lb. I just shook my head and walked away. I'm so thankful I am surrounded by pecan trees at my home and the nuts are starting to fall. The only thing we'll have to pay is time in picking them up and a bit of real $$ to have them cracked for us...and more time to pick them out of their shells. But fresh pecans year round (we always freeze several lbs) is worth the effort.
But here is a question; does roasting the pecans raise the carb count? I know roasting certain veggies does, but does that apply to nuts as well?

I’m assuming I have lowered my basal metabolic rate a bit as well since I lost 40+ pounds in the last 4 months. So might not be able to keep losing by eating the same amount as before. Be careful with brazil nuts, though. You don't want selenium deficiency, but you don't want selenosis, either (and that includes chronic, low-level, subclinical and/or semiclinical selenosis). Getting selenosis from chronically ingesting too many brazil nuts is very rare but (sadly enough) it still can happen. Brazil nuts need to be treated with respect. I love using brazil nuts whenever I can as a mineral supplement; one a day is enough for me (or on rare occasions maybe two). :-D

Karen, I'm interested in knowing the answer to this as well. I'm commenting here to get the notification when somebody answers. Hopefully Dr. Berry sees your question and helps us, but he gets way too many comments, so it will be difficult. Also, 1 ounce of almonds has 6.1g of carbs, of which 3.5g are fiber. My understanding is that net carbs are what one has to look at in the ketogenic diet. This makes 2.6g of net carbs in 1 ounce of almonds. This is still a low amount, isn't it?

My belief is you will only snack because your body is not satisfied with the last meal you consumed. I woke up to this recently, like about 2 weeks ago, and now put a tad extra on my plate for the last meal of the day, before sunset normally. This certainly fixed the evening snacking which if started always ended up in raiding the fridge!
I don't get the urge to snack in the day, thankfully...The late night "snacking" was always because I recently decided to eat a smaller meal in the evening to help digestion and good sleep, and that was when the late evening munchies began!
Bad sleeping was something I never had, so I thought a smaller evening meal would help.
Am not overweight but now believe I have both fatty liver and pancreas. I instinctively felt my pancreas was in trouble...am stuck in Hungary, my family doc is in Australia. So have been doing a lot of research these past weeks and found out I was causing my own problems by over dosing on fresh and frozen fruits I grow. Overdosing was not the word...pigging out would be the better word.
My freezers are full of fruits, cooked in their own juices, no added water, sugar etc. Pure washed, home grown fruits...meaning the resultant product is concentrated fructose +++.
Now I have to give away 3 freezers of frozen fruits and about 50 jars of concentrated tomatoes too, over the coming months! Have just informed my neighbours to come gather all the fruits for the coming season, so that part is sorted out...now to find out what to grow in place of the veggies I also grew. I have a few raspberry plants that are amazing, now to try blueberry plant or 2.

@KenDBerryMD Just a thought, I know you were saying that Almonds were too carby for you because they had I believe you said 6 carbs per ounce, and part of your reasoning behind keeping the carbs down is to keep your insulin levels normal throughout the day etc... I just thought I would let you know that even though they may be 6 carbs per ounce, Almonds help reduce your blood sugar levels, so even though they are one carb over your good vs naughty level wouldn't that help balance them out more toward the good side? Speaking from personal experience, I helped treat my diabetes (type 2) by eating approx 28 almonds a day plus took 2 cinnamon w/ chromium pills a day and had my A1C levels checked every 3 months (as my insurance would allow) and I was able to lower my A1C by 3 points in that 3 month period of time just by doing those 2 things, didn't do anything else differently, wasn't on any diabetic medications at the time because I was on a waiting list to see an endocrinologist. They wanted my A1C levels lowered before I could have a surgery done at that time. I was able to get the levels lowered on my own before even seeing the endocrinologist, and was able to have the surgery done.

Some people do just fine with peanuts and peanut butter for a while, but most have to cut them out when they stall.

I love Peanut butter and only eat the organic with peanuts as the only ingredient however, they always stall me. So frustrating. Wish I had your body's tolerance to it

KenDBerryMD Thanks Doctor Berry. I'll test it out - I'll be the Guinea Pig and see when I stall out. I had to go Keto because I was diagnosed with a Severe Fatty Liver. I was 321lbs at the time at 5'11". I am now at 288lbs. I've had further tests on my liver and have been found to be suffering from Hemosiderosis. My Ferritin levels were 4266, 4580, & 4360 - my Doctor took 3 tests because he didn't believe the first 2 tests. Normal-High is 380. I'm getting a Liver Biopsy done this Thursday to figure out the concentration of iron in my liver, the possible cause, & if it is possibly affecting other organs. I lost my job due to my liver. I worked in an intense IT position. I'm extremely fatigued. My abdomen had bloated to 60". Yes - 60" - I looked like SpongeBob - I was 5'x5' - LOL! So, Keto has helped me although I'm still fatigued, joint pain that's unbelievable, loss of libido, weakness, and anger issues at times. All symptoms of Hemochromatosis.

@@3cardmonty602 - Maybe you have the genetic Alpha 1 anti-trypsin inhibitor gene. It gives most people severe lung issues, but another effect is Hemochromatosis.

    • @3cardmonty602
      @3cardmonty602 5 лет назад +2

Nancy Archibald I haven't had any lung issues yet. Never smoked or drank. I'm 58. My Doctor tested my blood for genetic Hemochromatosis related genes and it came up negative. So - I hate to have them do a Liver Biopsy on me, but we are all stumped. I don't have high circulating iron in my blood either. I'm just storing an awful lot of iron and they don't know why. I've never taken an iron supplement, & I don't eat a particularly high iron diet. ?????

My slender athletic son in law [Alabama born, Florida panhandle raised] was practically weaned on boiled peanuts. He lives in suburban Orlando now, and has to make pilgrimages to outlying rural areas a couple times a year to pick up some from roadside vendors. I wonder what the carb count is? I suppose it depends on the flavor and whether they've added sugar. Most are savory or spicy, not sweet. He eats the softened shell as well as the kernel. Probably lots of fiber.

Dr Berry, I've had a problem with low potassium in the past. I used to eat a banana a day. Of course, I don't now. But, I'm showing signs of low potassium again..... rapid heart rate, and leg cramps. I eat fresh spinach and kale daily. I wanted to know if there are other foods packed with potassium that are KETO friendly. For now, I'm taking a supplement. Thanks!

Become a label reader, if that diet drink contains aspartame ( one of the most toxic substances on earth) it will harm your body! Choose one that has a plant based sweetener such as stevia.

I just don't get it. If almonds are on the naughty list, why do keto-preneurs push almonds as super keto friendly? Almonds, almond butter, almond milk, almond flour. Why not pecan nuts/butter/milk/flour or walnut nuts/butter/milk/flour at half the carbs of almonds?

it takes 1.1 gallons of water to grow a SINGLE almond. I think California needs that water for better things. Almond trees get loads of pesticides that are killing off our bees. Almond milk is such BS too...have you ever seen a tree nut lactate??? Almonds are really high in anti-nutrients like phytic acid.

I have never heard of anybody "shelling" a punkin seed. Always eat/ate whole seed. I imagine that's a lot of extra fiber ya.
My brother eats peanuts shell and all. I tried it, don't really care for it.

I suffered an acute MI about 2 months ago. I’m only 37 years old and in decent shape. I’ve been following a Ketogenic diet for the past 2 weeks because the low fat diet the cardiac rehab nurse had me on was doing nothing. I’m a believer in intermittent fasting but I have medications now that I have to take twice a day with meals. Do you think it’s healthy to take them with lunch and dinner and skip breakfast? I’ve been taking them with breakfast and dinner since the incident. Thank you Dr Berry! I appreciate all that you do for us!

I've been eating a 9oz can of nuts with my 1-2 meal a day diet and kept the weight off and gained muscle. 3000 cal diet currently. I do work out every day almost. If it's working for you, then do it. Cashews are my fav. But try to eat macadamia more. Started with keto and now low carb. Grass fed meat is my main source of food. 165lb. 5'10" 40's
