Regular watcher of both countdowns here. Started as a watcher of 8 out of 10 cat does and liked the game aspect of it, so watch the real thing now. I was distinctly average at maths in school, but I do have a knack for quick head maths, so I got the answer with 75x10-100+3=678 and the 50/25 gives you the 2 to take off.
You'll pick up a lot of countdown tricks for the maths and the letters, and once you know you 75 times table up to at least 14x75=1050, that helps a lot too. Also, helps to look in the letters rounds for the likes of iest ing out ish er ient ise iser and so on. I've gotten at least a few 9 letter words using both iest and ing.

We've grown up with the original countdown from 1982 to the present day. the more you play the easier it gets(ish).
The newer format moves to a team mate and one word round per segment instead of two. This alloys more time for comedy and Susie dents origin of words segment. You guys are such fun to watch, keep doing what your doing.

Susie Dent doesn't just have a degree, she's a professional lexicographer and has been on the show doing this for over 30 years. And bear in mind that it's on every day. Her Wikipedia says that she's done over 5000 episodes. The dictionary is just to check the meanings if they're not sure a word is correct. She's not using it to find the words. And there are definitely times where she misses a word that the contestants or even members of the audience get. As for Rachel, she occasionally can't get the answer either and they give her more time and come back to her later in the show.

Also you'll notice how your maths develops as you play; you'll figure out little ways to get to the right number that you didn't do before.

Just for context, Susie Dent started working on countdown in 1992 and its literally a daily programme. On days where the 8 out of 10 cats version is on, twice a day. The length of the word she gets is only the longest she could in the time, viewers at home do get bigger words, it isn't the official longest you could have got. Its obviously similar with Rachel Riley with numbers. Daily/twice daily shows means they literally live it!

Hi Jodi and Nick. You do have a point that degree level study of maths and English does not involve learning how to play the Countdown games. At most, you might expect that people who *can* play these games might be inclined to choose those subjects to study if they went to university. Great review as usual.

I'm sure you've been told before, but this '8 out of 10' version of Countdown is a late night comedy version of the standard daily quiz which has been on TV every weekday since the mid-80's. It's VERY popular in the UK! it still has Rachel & Suzy on it, but the contestants are regular members of the public. Most contestants though are REALLY good, scoring 8 & 9 letter words quite regularly. You should really find the standard Countdown show on RUclips.

I have read (and I'd not be surprised if it's true) that Suzie Dent (Dictionary Corner) has some form of help. either a) an earpiece where she can be told the best answer, or b) a screen on / in her desk where the best answer can be displayed. The best answer can of course be found quickly using an online app. I'm NOT saying that she's not very smart, which she is, but it would be humanly impossible to come up with the absolutely best answer every time. Rachel, on the other hand, is a case of "what you see is what you get". There will very occasionally be a set of numbers where she can't come up with the correct answer. If that's the case she will get mercilessly torn apart by Jimmy.

There is a computer search. Taking a set of letters and finding matching words in a list is a trivial program that can search the whole oxford dictionary and provide matches in milliseconds on any computing device. Anyone who works in programming should be able to come up with the code to do that in a couple of hours.

An MA from Oxford is not just a degree, in the same way a masters in a subject from
Harvard isn’t. Although remember UK degrees are specialised, you only study that subject, absolutely nothing else. Every bit of reading, every bit of study and research, every lecture is on that subject.
The point of highlighting that isn’t to say why they’re good but because many outside the UK assume they’re just presenters with no other knowledge or ability

Better than a circle is to leave the letters scattered around so that you don't get a pattern, that way it's easier to find words, because if there's a pattern, it will always catch your eye and prime you to the letter sequence of that pattern (hence why a circle is not great either).

I write my letters in a circle and for me personally I find that it helps. Also if you do a lot of crosswords and other types of word games it helps your brain be more agile around random letters. I don't know if you learnt the times tables in America (or multiplication tables), but we learnt them up to 10 when I was at school (over 50 years ago). Rachel knows much higher tables (like the 75 times table) so she can get starting numbers very quickly. In this one she probably knew that 13x52 was the right answer so she just had to see how she could get to 13 and 52.

Nick, don't worry about the numbers. On the standalone "Countdown" programme, frequently there are contestants with mathematics degrees, even maths teachers who struggle with the numbers. Only quite recently a contestant who was head of mathematics at a school was a complete apparent numbskull when it came to the numbers rounds - and I'm talking about answers where the target number was very easily reached with the given numbers. But she was just unable to see it. She stayed on for a few progs as the "champion," but that was based largely on her wordsmith abilities. On her last programme (when she was beaten) she finally managed to "get" a numbers round correctly.

We've watched the proper show for years , Susie used to be one of several representatives of the Oxford English dictionary ( the full 20+ volume version being the prize at the end of each series) and eventually joined the show full time . Rachael is so good you believe her if she says it can't be done . It's nice if you get a word or number the contestants don't but it's awesome to watch the best ones . The 8/10 Cats version is far more about comedy , although this is early and it may even be the audience was from normal Countdown as it's the same set and toned down . Carrot in a box is classic .

So, if you can find a way to make 113 (100+13) then just multiply by 6. I say this purely as advice. I’m crap at the numbers round. I just know how to do it, but I’m way too slow. Before Rachel Riley, it was Carol Vorderman. She retired / quit from the show. Rachel was the new girl which I wasn’t sure about, but she never disappointed
She’s a mathematic genius like carol , and she’s also likeable and has charisma. After carol it was big shoes to fill, but she’s done it brilliantly. She’s now almost a legend of the show in her own right.
Obviously you know this a comedy / satire version of the actual countdown. ( weekdays on channel 4)

Cats does countdown certainly wouldn't have worked with Vorderman. Riley is some kind of superwoman, beautiful, very intelligent and able in many things, quick witted, funny and willing to be the butt of a joke too. There has to be something wrong with her, though. Yeah, she's married... Nobody's perfect.

I got 675 as well. In a numbers round, if neither contestant gets to the exact number then it's the player who gets the closest to it that 'wins' the round, although I don't recall if they still score the points for that or not. So 1 off isn't too bad as it's as close as you can get to it without actually getting it.

The number rounds don't always add up. Remember, both the number choices and the number viewer are unknown and random.

The more you do them the better you get at it .. just like anything else I guess!
I am 100% a dyslexic so the numbers are the things I do get the right answer for.. most of the time, but the words are like "How the hell does that word exist amongst those random letters" the best I can do is a four letter word.
