Hey Paula, remember when you said "What if the rest of the show just takes place on the stupid bug"? … Well… Oh dear. 😂
I sniggered.
It was a chuckle moment
As soon as she said it I just laughed and said "Hey Paula, guess what happens in the VERY NEXT episode!"
She couldn't have picked a much better time to say that. The only time that would have been funnier is if she said it in the intro to this very reaction.
When she said that, it took every ounce of willpower I possessed to not spoil this season opener. XD
Also when they said during Demons and Angels “They wouldn’t just blow up the model for that one shot would they?” Yes, they would and yes they did. You’ll notice the Dwarf didn’t appear in Back to Reality.
Among the wrecked spaceships in the asteroid field are models of the Narcissus shuttle from Alien, the Eagle from Space 1999, and a Klingon attack cruiser from Star Trek TNG. Craig Charles (half -jokingly) complained to Doug Naylor about Rimmer getting a romantic storyline in the previous season's Holoship while Lister wasn't getting any love scenes at all, so Naylor wrote the scene of Lister snogging the Psiren to get back at him 😂
You may be interested to know that the older female soldier in Lister's temptation was played by Anita Dobson, who of course played Mrs Flood in the recent Doctor Who Christmas Special.
being married to, and sharing a hairstyle with, Brian May@@TroyConvers5000
@@TroyConvers5000Singing "Anyone Can Fall In Love" on Top of the Pops?
Also famously she's married to Brian May, the guitarist from Queen
So many strong guest stars in this one.
@@fallofcamelot Which is of course how this appearance came about; they sounded out Brian May to double Psiren-Lister's guitar playing. He was unavailable (they got Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music instead) but Anita said, "Is there anything in it for me?"
Apparently the reason they don't have Red Dwarf in this season was that someone accidentally knocked the model off the shelf it was stored on, and it shattered into pieces...
Well maybe that or was it that they blew the shooting model up with pyros for “demons and angels” either way it ended up in pieces. . . 🎉
@@jmkqfnvyl87 Because Im a giant nerd...I did some checking and apparently....we're both right.
So the model DID fall of a shelf and shatter into lots of bits...
A second model was made to allow them to film series 5, and was then blown up for Demons and Angels....as Grant Naylor were being pressured to do more Holly stuff and Red Dwarf ship stuff...and they did an about face and decided to get rid of both for series 6

The BBC in the UK once ran a RED DWARF night. It included a quiz between cast and fan club, a smeg-ups show, and "CAN`T SMEG, WON`T SMEG" a parody of Can`t cook, won`t cook presented by chef Ainsley Harriott who once played a GELF in Red Dwarf. This show was one of the funniest pieces of tv I have ever witnessed and you should search it out. Its so funny it hurts as Danny plays it as Dwayne Dibley. Laugh `til it hurts !
Paula's reaction to Pete Tranter's sister is priceless.
"Tune into Sanity FM!" is probably my favourite Rimmerism.
When you first decided to watch Red Dwarf, could you have imagined how much you would love it? A British sci-fi sitcom with actors you’d never heard of.
Series 6 has probably the best episode of RD, episode 3! In fact, it won an international Emmy, which is amazing because the BBC said, "no you're not making it", so they did anyway.
Actually Janet Street Porter who was in charge of BBC 2 at the time told them in her usual friendly charming way the episode was far too ambitious and there was no way they could shoot it in the time they'd planned. The boys didn't have the heart to interrupt her rant to tell her they'd shot it the week before and it was already in the can.
@@TroyConvers5000 absolutely she is an outstanding professional however her being excellent at every job she ever held did lead her to underestimate others sometimes and run roughshod over others when they disagreed with her. She wasn't wrong often but when she was nobody could change her mind.

Season 7 episode 1 ..... "Tikka To Ride"
One of the best parts of owning the DVDs of the series was the cast commentary. Hearing them razz Robert Llewellyn for never remembering his lines or needing other cast members to hold up sheets of paper with his lines on them, hearing Craig Charles talk about scenes like the bug kissing in Psirens or the head pop in Justice, or the other cast members alternately praising and being annoyed with Charles' ability to read the script once and have it memorized. After watching the series so many times, it was great to watch it again with their reactions and commentary.
In terms of production, writing, the jokes and certainly the plots for each episode, Series 6 is my absolutely favourite series of the whole show.
6 has been my favourite series since it aired. Absolutely amazing. Also contains the Emmy award winning episode of RD. Can't wait to see what you make of it
The Psirens would defined fit into the Classic Doctor Who universe 100% their designs are great
Great opening episode to a great season. I love every episode, even the couple which feel like returning elements of what we've seen before. Some nice cameos in those one, Clare Grogan (the OG Kochanski), Anita Dobson (Big soap star here in UK & of course tuned up in The Church on Ruby Road) & Jenny Agutter (actress who started when a child, The Railway Children, & went on to lots of other good stuff including American Werewolf in London).
"All those shades of green" In the Book, Kryten walks off at this point claiming loading the neuroses will take the same time as a showing of 'Gone with the wind'.
Welcome to season 6. Red Dwarf at its very peak!
Remember how Camille inverted the trope by being totally chill instead of playing it the usual way? Well, say hello to playing it the usual way, care of The Psirens.
Nice to see you reboot your background in alignment with an aesthetic reboot for the show.
Since the show was coming back from hiatus/the failed attempt to launch a US and/or movie version, this is by design a new "first episode" and the second best onboard point for a new fan after the literal first episode. Holly, and Red Dwarf itself, disappear in the overhaul, and the "Boys From The Dwarf" era begins. There's more signature recurring gags from here on out (including but not limited to the "Space Corps Directives") and more Star Trek TNG parallels as they're forced to explore (scavenge) like never before.
All time top 10 episode for me. It's always one of my favorite gags when the crew stumbles into accidentally saving the day through their flaws. As such, catching the psiren out because it's too good at guitar is a top Red Dwarf moment.
And yes, that was THE Jenny Agutter as Dr. Mamet.
The reason for Series 6 being set on Starbug: Prior to the scripts of Series VI being written the model of Red Dwarf had fallen off a shelf and had broken which gave Rob Grant and Doug Naylor the idea to have the guys in Starbug searching for it.
I thought they blew their only model up for Angels and Demons?
The final series with both writers, after series six they had a huge fallout and split. Only one of them continued to write red dwarf and it went on hiatus for about 4 years before returning in 1997 for series 7
series 6 is regarded as the pinnacle of red dwarf. the effects, the writing are top notch. episode 3 is regarded as one of the best episodes period and has won a number of awards. though i love ep 2 and 4.
Finding out the real Lister with him playing the Guitar is to date the best way in any show, i have ever seen, to spot an imposter :D
@@TroyConvers5000 didn't know that.
@@And-ur6ol Apparently the producers initially approached Brian May (since his missus is in the episode anyway), but he didn't think anyone would buy his pasty white arms as belonging to Lister.
@@f0rth3l0v30fchr15t I would think they wouldn't be able to hide his perm behind Lister either.
These split screens are getting more realistic all the time. It looks like you're sitting next to each other in the same room!😉
Fun fact for this episode: Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music provided the guitar playing for Psiren Lister by standing behind Craig Charles and sticking his arms through his armpits to play it.
So I guess in his mind, Lister is as good as the guitar player from Roxy Music
This is where it gets really, REALLY good
Don't forget, they blew their only prop of Red Dwarf in the last series. As for Holly, they kind of shot themselves in the foot when Kryten joined as he basically did the same job as Holly plus the physical humour.
So glad you continued with this, it is such a typically british show. Season 7 has my favourite episode in it.
Season 7 is an odd beast
Cant wait for next week, it's my favourite episode!
Fun fact, the Astro that gets his brains sucked out on the video is the actor who plays daddy pig on Peppa Pig !
He also Voiced The Mountain in Game of thrones.
@@reconer100You know thinking back, I can here it. Huh.
One recommendation, you two should check out the season bloopers (aka the "Smeg Ups") between each season. Absolute comedy gold to be had there.
They do, the reactions are on their Patreon.
That episode felt a lot longer than it actually was, they really knew how to keep the flow going. I thought for sure it was going to end after the guitar playing test, so good.
You guys are in the same room. Did not expect that
Finally after six seasons we have come full circle from when Paula thought they weren't on Red Dwarf any longer and I can comment "Not Yet!! :)"
This is the first time I’ve seen you in the same space… And of course, still enjoying the red boys. ❤😂❤😂
I got caught out again until nearly the end of the episode, only to realise you both were in the same room!!! That is twice...... twice.....🤣🤣🤣
Mwahahahahahaha 😈😤
Series 6 is definitely one of my favourite series of the show, the next two episodes especially! A shatter reality moment, if you watch where "Lister" plays the guitar, you can see Craig Charles has his hands behind his back and someone is playing for him! 😂
I remember Charles, Barrie, Llewellyn, and John Jules talking about that in the commentary track on the DVD.
I told you that 4,5&6 are the funniest series....you will love the rest of this season...it only gets better.
The first guy getting seen getting the straw treatment is the voice of Pepper Pig's Dad
Need "Ah. Smug mode." on a shirt lmao
I think they sell it on Etsy. Lol
Ah. I always thought I was missing the episode where the Red Dwarf got stolen. We didn't have the show where I lived. My grandparents would send us VHS recordings of the show taken from TV. There were even some episodes that stopped half way through because that tape reached the end before the episode was done, and it went years before I got to see the whole episode.
I thought the same thing at first, lol. I had been borrowing the tapes from my friend, and when I got to this one I assumed that he had neglected to give me one of the tapes.
@@Johnny_Socko Glad to learn I wasn't the only one.
I forgot Jenny Agutter was in this. In my opinion, this is the best series of Red Dwarf.
Next week is one of my favorite season 6 episodes can't wait
So glad you got into this series...😊
Love that you are wearing the Fish bone earring Paula!
Great video on a great episode ladies. Suggest you keep the sick bags on standby. More great episodes to come. Don't know if it's true but Brian May of Queen was approached to do the guitar scene he was unable to because of other commitments.
Apparently, Holly was written out of the show because they felt like she was becoming superfluous. Kryten was getting more of the exposition lines, so they figured Holly wasn't needed anymore.
It's actually quite surprising how many little things from the early episodes get called back later.
For instance, in Me^2, Rimmer says of his copy, "what a guy". Which ends up being the reaction everyone who ever meets Ace Rimmer has instantly.
There's even a line from the flashback in Balance Of Power that will come back later this season. (No spoilers, I'll let you guess when it happens).
Oh BOY ! I've been waiting to say "Stay Back Pete Tranter's sister !" for a couple of weeks now !
Only in red dwarf can sound not travel in space but somehow smells can 😂
Well...sharks can smell blood from miles away through water, when the smell molecules can't possibly be making it to their nose. Gotta be some quantum entanglement thing going on. Whatever particle magic is going on with sharks, that's what Cat has.
Crazy to think they did it before Futurama and their Smelloscope.
I love the absolute nonsense of it. I mean, for a smell to even reach him, there'd have to be a hole in the hull.
The BBC loved the hell out of series 6, when I was a kid in the 90's If Dwarf was on there was a 99.99999% chance it was S6
It's the "Back to the Future 3" of TV series 😅
Yes, I started with S6 and got to see it about three times before they showed any of the earlier series.
I remember they repeated it, but played the episodes in the wrong order which really annoyed me.
That's probably largely due to the fact that there was the longest break up to this point between Series 6 and 7. Partly because of Grant and Naylor's falling out and partly because Craig Charles had to go and serve a prison sentence.
BBC2 in the mid 90s could justify it's existence to the BBC board by saying "series 6?"...every year from '93 onward
Season 6, for me, might be peak Dwarf. It was the sweet spot where the cast was very comfortable in their roles... the writing was still great and the effects and production design was much improved from when the show began.
Great reaction as always 😊 Have you seen 'Garth Marenghi's Darkplace'? That's another good British spoof of American sci fi/paranormal shows from the 80's.
Out of all the problems, if they do stay just on the small ship is Boys From the Bug just doesn't have the same ring.
Love the reactions.
this season is PEAK Red Dwarf, not only was it at its most popular point in its run but the writing really found a groove snd turned out some of the best episodes
Glad you gals are enjoying Red Dwarf so much. S6 is my personal favourite tho (not really a spoiler) this is the last series with Rob Grant as co creator/writer, leaving Doug Naylor to head up the subsequent series alone
If you're surprised that Red Dwarf isn't in Red Dwarf, read up on Taggart sometime. Scottish police procedural centred on Jim Taggart, ran from 1985 to 2010 (with a pilot in 1983). Mark McManus, who played Jim Taggart, died in 1994. The title referred to a character who wasn't in the show for more than half of the life of the show!
"Inspecturrr, thurs bin a murrdurr."
Though IMO, the best thing about Taggart was Mark's cameo in Scotch and Wry in one of the Supercop sketches.
Blake's 7 did it first!
The thing i like is that you said a few episodes back, i hope they dont lose Red Dwarf and stay on that mini ship. 😂 I knew this episode was soon haha
Episode 5 of this series is my all time favourite
There is an interesting back story in the form of a short graphic novel. It explains how Red Dwarf was stolen and should be still available online.
Together again in person!! This season has some of the best episodes and is also the beginning of the downfall (if comes back) and Paula guessed right about being stuck on Starbug ages ago.
The small seasons are condensed for you, for us at the time is was sometimes years and years and years between them
Psirens is my second favourite episode of the show overall it has everything
season 6 is without a doubt the best season in my opinion, every episode is just amazing (although season 7 ep 1 is my all time favourite episode of the show).
See also as prof. Mamet, Jenny agutter, as seen in American werewolf in London and a Sheild director in the MCU
Wasn't she also the hottie in Logans Run?
@wyrmshadow4374 yes she was Jessica 6 in Logans Run, the movie not the TV show.
More recently she is in Call The Midwife.
Also also, the male psirens victim played by Richard Ridings who does the voice of daddy pig in Peppa pig
There's also The Railway Children that she was in.
Can't tell if that thumbnail for the vid is from you seeing the brains being sucked out or the realization that it's gonna be "the stupid bug" all the way!
I'd forgotten about Jenny Agutter appearing in this one.
If you want more Kochanski, Clare Grogan is a singer in a band since the 80s called Altered Images.
Also, heavily featured in the sweet teen romance film Gregory's Girl. Beautiful woman.
Real SF fans know Jenny from Logan's Run. Just saying.
@@beauxguss6321 And American Werewolf In London. Sci-Fi fans frequently bleed over into comic horror.
It's interesting to me that they spent more time reintroducing us to the characters and their personality traits than they did explaining what happened between series! Like they're more concerned about new viewers than returning fans.
Paula's fish bone earring! ♥
Craig Charles complained that Rimmer was getting more action than Lister. So they gave him this scene lol He says in the DVD commentary, “Talk about making me pay for it!”
Interesting cameos including Claire Grogan , Jenny Agguter and Anita Dobson in this . Starbug takes a bigger role and our heroes have a quest . This series is Red Dwarf at its best .
Did you spot the retcon of the Lister/Kochanski relationship? With this episode, she goes from being an unrequited love to an ex-girlfriend who dumped him after three weeks. An example of continuity from the novels (which I highly recommend, btw) making its way into the show, as Grant and Naylor thought Lister's original attitude toward her was immature, and that it would be better if he were pining for a relationship he'd lost rather than one he never had.
Also, between S5 and S6, there had been an unbroadcast pilot for a US version of the show featuring Robert Llewellyn (with the Cat played by Hinton Battle, who sadly passed away yesterday), followed by a 10-minute promo, which can both be seen on YT.
I hadn't heard that about Hinton Battle, what a shame. One of the "Behind the Scenes" Red Dwarf videos had a lovely anecdote from Danny John-Jules. He said that when the cast heard about the US version of RD in development, of course everyone was cynical. But when the news came about who had been cast as Cat, Danny was taken aback. Hinton Battle had been a major inspiration to Danny in his life & career, and he (Danny) said something like, "It's a pretty amazing thing to have your own role model perform a character that is so close to your heart."
The retcon occurs in season 3 there's a throw away line about how they dated.
@@wodmarachOh yes! There's a line in S4's DNA about him wanting to become a squirrel after she finished with him.
The Gals from the DWARF! In the same place? At the same time? What are these alternate timeline shenanigans?
S6 is my fav, but like everything from 3 to 6 is a win
Nice to see you're naturally calling it series now instead of season.
The female who got killed by the psirens who was with kochanski was Anita Dobson (wife of Queens Brian May) who plays Miss Flood in the Doctor Who episode: 'The Church on Ruby Road.'
P.s. ive just noticed everybody else has imparted the same information. Oh well.❤😂😂
Always loved that they got Jenny Agutter to play Professor Mamet.
The Jenny Agutter guest appearance deserves a mention.
Hope you 2 enjoy my favorite series of Red Dwarf!
Woop! Favourite season with favourite episode and favourite joke of the whole show - said joke isn't on this one though.
This Ep freaked me out as a kid, can't lie.
Paula called it a few videos back 😄
6:35 "Like an episode of Star Trek" - one of the derelicts in the field is in fact a model of a Klingon Vor'Cha class attack cruiser. There's also the Eagle from Space: 1999 and the escape shuttle from Alien in there.
Also, pointless trivia, but Captain Tau is played by Anita Dobson, who was (and indeed is still) married to Brian May.
I understand the Eagle and Alien Shuttle but how did the Vor’Cha get there?
@@Meritania "puq Hutlh! nguvchoH!"
If the first result for "klingon translator" can be trusted, anyway.
Captain Tau is also the name they gave the captain in the attempted American remake of Red Dwarf. I wonder if killing her off was creator commentary on how that went? It was not a happy time for them, at all.
It was funny to that DS9 had Jupiter Mining Company on one the Promenade screens because they were fans of the show.
So, this season finally gives one an appreciation for the size scale of the Starbugs. Like I said in a previous comments, they're not Trek shuttle sized, they're actually ferry or luxury yacht sized. Decks, corridors, quarters, med-bay, engineering, cargo hold, etc, etc. Why...enough to film a show on! 😉
A fact one really appreciates towards the end of series eight when... oh wait... spoilers
First one I've seen where you're in the same room. 😀 I did enjoy hearing a Scheiße.
S6 is decent, and production-wise (if people want that from Red Dwarf) it's the best the show ever looks. But I'm amazed so many people regard this as a "peak" of the show. I guess it is if you like gags about Kryten's head and Space Corps directives as - spoiler - there's about 50,000 of them to come. It's very much "gag per line" instead of characterisation, which gets wearying.
Grant-Naylor would never have stooped to a "I didn't know they had a duty free shop" gag in their prime, and while most of S6 just about gets away with it, you can see the wheels coming off, sadly. If it was a peak of Red Dwarf, Rob Grant wouldn't have cleared off after it was over.
The split between Rob and Doug is subject to a lot of speculation, hyperbole, and often both writers contradicting themselves. However, I do get the impression that Rob was wanting to move on and do his own thing.
David Tennant’s Doctor should have watched this episode and brought BOTH Donnas back on the TARDIS in that recent episode. Then found out which one played guitar well.
This is the first time I've seen you both in the same room together at the same time.
Disproves my theory that you're the same person 🤭
Season 6 is my favorite, so many classic lines and episodes and I love the setting on Starbug
Another great reaction, Gals! Funny how, although you are both in the same room, the background makes it look as if you are not...
I'd recommend watching the Series 7 TV version with the added laughter track.
You'll need it.
The pauses for the laughter track, I find, make it uncomfortable viewing.
I think that's where the 50/50 divide on Series 7 comes from.
Interesting... I always figured people were down on series 7 because they rewrote sweet K as a total B... :D
It may be too late if you're too far ahead on Patreon but if not, when you get to season 7 you should definitely consider watching the extended cuts of the episodes
If you think it's wierd Red Dwarf not appearing in Red Dwarf you need to check out that other classic British sci-fi show called Blake's 7.
Especially the last episode of B7 which is brilliant!
This was the season when I first got into RD. Even though I went back and watched the previous 5 seasons on VHS when they were released, this was the one I actually first watched on TV when it originally transmitted. It seems funny that I got into the show during a season which doesn’t even feature the title ship.😂
The pen and full stop lime still killed me
The writing takes a nose dive, when the writers split :(
and so the best season of red dwarf begins (in my opinion)
The woman before Kochanski is Mrs Flood from Doctor Who
Another classic RD episode with Lister kissing the alien 😂. At that point in the entire show I kept wondering what wild, crazy, or gross thing Lister was going to do each episode. It’s fun to see them again and new faces like yours reacting for the first time 🙂
S6 is another fun ride!
Series 6 and 7 are my absolute favorites
You two have the best banter, I really enjoy it!!
Thank you so much!!
Cometh the Starbuggers!
Another quality psicat video!
I love how unpredictable this series can be.. all with some really solid sci-fi. Kryten-3D reminds me so much of the movie Top Secret. I had to laugh, my wife was presenting at a science conference and caught herself about to drop the S-bomb and hedged to Schiesse just like you did Kat. The only problem... she was in Germany lol.
