Another fun fact from the novel. To project Rimmer's image actually doesn't take much, it's the rendering him that gobbles enough power to light up a small city. I love how you've both swung around to really liking the Dwarfers. For me what makes it work so well is that they are ALL flawed characters. There's no chisel-jawed hero, no All-American (or Brit), no Skywalker looking to get his gal. And once you invest in those characters, their nuances are what makes a lot of the humour, not only the dialogue. Eg. Who can forget the moment that Kryten first calls Rimmer a Smm...smm..smeggg...heeED :)
Being a comedy really frees up Red Dwarf to tell stories that wouldn't fly in regular sci-fi. It gives them the creative license to be ridiculous without having to worry about the audience suspending their disbelief.
It's often said madness and genius are only slightly separated this show is proof as they switch from one to the other and back again randomly in every episode.
Rimmer's "No chance you metal barsteward!" is my favourite 'directive'. It along with Lister replying to The Cat's last "So what is it?" With "Oh, someone punch him out!" always makes me laugh. 😂
It's true, RD has enough well written sci-fi to fill a quality sci-fi drama, and enough comedy to be a sitcom without sci-fi... That's why the show is 200% awesome. :)

The difference between Star Trek and Red Dwarf is the expectation of humanity. ST expects us to achieve a harmonious future, RD sees us trapped in a monotonous life.
Pretty much. The novels talk about how humanity originally set out to explore the stars but found nothing, so they gave up and stayed in the home system. I think it reflects real life. People hope for Star Trek but the Red Dwarf concept seems more likely given the vastness of the cosmos, the problems with relativity and the need for FTL tech to actually get anywhere! Plus humans are a horrible, arrogant, confrontational species, so we're a, long way from Star Trek style harmony.
Well - The next one IS amazing... No doubting that. As for the one after that... I'd say it's my least favourite of the original 6 year run. But I appreciate a lot of people LOVE it.
This is the episode that sticks with me the most from the original run... The scene discussing the while hole affected by the time issues is the best sci fi comedy moment ever.
For real this time, the next episode is one of the most iconic of the whole show and you're going to absolutely love it. What's more, series 5 and the BAFTA winning series 6 are even better by most people's estimations. 😊
It blows my mind that Red Dwarf of all things has a Japanese dub as well as yearly fan conventions. Or at least they used to. Several of the actors even attended. It's style is so British that I'm really curious how that happened.
Of course, theoretically, they would still perform the experiment on the toaster, then Holly, and end up in the same situation all over again, this time without the temporal anomalies. Let's pretend the timeline reset before Kryten had the idea, and somehow didn't have it the next time around.
The thing is... Red Dwarf actually does have its own internal consistency and continuity, even the tech has some logic to it through out. You'll be surprised at what comes around from time to time latter, and much latter. Also, things like Tiny Robocop Lister, they still had the machine that made him that way to begin with at the end of that episode... no need to go and show him being returned to normal and ruining ending on a joke, since its a given they would fix it all back to normal.
At a sci-fi Convention, the Boys from the Dwarf were doing a Q&A. When asked by a 9 year-old "What does Smeg mean", they literally crawled off the dias in embarrassment, much adult laughter was heard.

I am so unbelievably happy you love red dwarf, literally the most underrated show and like no one knows about this show which is crazy to me
Is Kat a musician? I had a flash vision of her today, with a silver flute conducting a band, while I reflected that there was an episode out today.
This has always been my favourite episode
Love Talkie Toaster. One of my favorite side characters.
One of my favourite episodes along with Justice, Polymorph, DNA, Rimmer & Waxworld.
Been waiting all week for this and finally we are here :)
