Anyway, this could be a standard for average people that don't feel an urge to hit a gym several times a week, but they still have a healthy care of their body, health and overall condition. On the other hand, when you hit a gym these days, often you'll find just a bunch of obese ppl on treadmills. Not trying to make fun of anyone, but that's how it is.

Series 5 slaps. And Rimmer is my fave because he is so complex 😅 You hate him, you love him, you feel sorry for him, and you wish he was better, and he's consistently one of the funniest characters on the show. But he also has a lot of trauma that makes him the way he is and the show really harps on the fact that if his life had just been a little different he would have had so much potential. He's tragic in a way.

There is a great anecdote about the making of this episode and Robert Llewellyn's biography. They shot the trip across the swamp in the dead of night. Robert Llewellyn can't swim. The three of them are trying to paddle the boat towards the camera which is 100 yd away, barely visible by a red light. They have virtually no control over the the boat.. All of the butane bottles spewing flame into the air made the lake look like a Kuwaiti oil field. At one point Craig Charles decides he wants to light a cigarette by one of the flames. He leans over, almost to where the boat tips over, lights a cigarette, exhale the cloud of smoke, and says "Paddle on dudes". By now Robert Llewellyn and Danny John-Jules are helpless with laughter. How they got usable footage from this is a mystery of the ages.

Chris Barrie and Craig Charles started out legitimately not liking each other (and some early episodes really show it!), but round about this point (Season/Series 5) they start getting along.
Rob Grant and Doug Naylor started out getting around really great but eventually had a very deep (and permanent to this point) falling out after Series/Season 6. Doug Naylor has continued writing the show as a solo effort since. They co-wrote the first two novels as "Grant Naylor" and have each written a competing third Red Dwarf novel. The opening to this episode have always been at the top of the list of best openings for the whole series. Everything was played perfectly, particularly given I'm old enough to remember playing text based adventure games. :D Episode like this are one of the reasons season 5 is thought of as the best in the series. On a personal level, you also have to admire the sort of minds that could conceive of such notions and bring them to the screen in such a convincing way. As bizarre as the concept of a psi-moon is, at no point is there any doubt that such a thing could exist. And it's not every sci-fi show that could get away with it: Star Trek couldn't do it because their characters are supposed to be so well adjusted. You need a crew of seriously messed up people to get away with such an idea.

The only odd thing about this episode is they all can interact with Rimmer's body before they meet Legion and Rimmer gets his hard light drive.

Remember, we know exactly what would happen with Lister if he really applied himself. He was a full on chief engineer Dave "Spanners" Lister in Ace's universe.
And as for Rimmer, he may be a complete and total smegpot. But he's THEIR complete and total Smegpot. XD

I think there was a recent agreement that the two creators could both use the rights to the Red Dwarf IP but each would be its own thing (I guess akin to the earlier Sony/Marvel Spider-man movies)

In case nobody's pointed it out yet, the cat's coat is the same one he wore in the Camille episode where he hand-slapped himself. The costume department recoloured it by hand, scribbling over all the white bits with yellow markers.

It was common for tv stations in the UK, in the event of a technical fault, to have an announcer inform the audience of the fault and introduce some light jazz, hence Kryten's self repair screen.

You are 100% right about them deep down really caring about Rimmer... even Cat! When Kryten say's " of course sir, you're part of the team" it is such a heart warming moment that always puts a smile on my face. The musketeers would say "All for one and one for all", but i've always preferred "Boys from the dwarf"

It's after Series VI when things get alittle downhill from there but it does rise up again in few series after that.
Series VI is actually one of my favourite series in "Red Dwarf".
The Unspeakable One monster i believe was an unused prop for Doctor Who.

The thing about Red Dwarf is that it’s a Status Quo show - basically Seinfeld in Space. The characters don’t learn or grow - the first priority is being funny. If Rimmer ever properly learned or grew as a person, the show would be over. It’s very much a mixed blessing lol

Hello Gals , in reply to your comment about the show inevitably "falling off" , going down hill , you could not be more wrong , this show just keeps getting better and better with every new serason and episode , my personal favourite if you put a gun to my head and forced me to choose , would be the first episode of season 7 ""Tikka to ride"" can't wait to see your reaction , that episode and the "changling" xenomorph , the alien that changes shape , boxer shorts, football etc ,,, that also is up there on the list of greatest of all time .

There are a few lines from this episode that just really make me laugh.
“It’s in my boxers. I think it’s making a nest.” always gets me.
But the bit that really makes me laugh is when the bikini-clad women have left and the creature climbs out of the pit. Rimmer’s “…boy am I glad to see you” line I just find hilarious.

When I think of my peer group from high school, there was certainly a "Rimmer"-type person who everyone accepted in the group, but no one would want to spend time with 1-1... Of course - others in that same group may have viewed me the same way... It's not like I'm swimming in friends as a 40-something nerdy married male dad.
