I've never read a bad word about Keith Flint, who despite his scary appearance was by all accounts utterly nice. There's a lovely story from James Blunt, of all people. When Keith died James tweeted:
"At the Q Awards years ago, when Noel Gallagher was saying he was leaving Ibiza because I’d moved there, and Damon Albarn refused to be in the same picture as me, and Paul Weller was saying he’d rather eat his own shit than work with me, Keith Flint came over, gave me a hug, and said how thrilled he was for my success. Keith, I only met you once, but I shed a tear at the news of your death. In our business, there are no prizes for being kind, but if there was, that Grammy would be yours."

James Blunt showing class himself there. Can't stand his music, but I have a lot of respect for the man himself. His tweets are on occasion legendary.
Metalheads and punks tend to display more empathy, and are a far safer option for kids to hang with than the average chav or jock type, in my experience.

@@TfL1901 Forty years or so ago I spent a sizeable chunk of my youth in Jilly's, a rock club in Manchester. So, mostly denim and leather clad denizens with a sprinkling of punks and Goths, the 'weirdo' was the middle aged balding bloke who used to turn up in a three piece suit, looking like an accountant who'd just emerged from a meeting. He never got any grief and he hit the dance floor like everyone else. Good days.

I had the honour and privilege to be the assistant engineer (read ‘tape op’/‘tea boy’) for the vocal sessions for ‘Fat of the Land’. When it came to firestarter, it was decided that, for the vibe, Keith should do his vocals in the control room. He had a handheld SM58 with the lead trailing out through the control room door , into the live room, and plugged directly into a 4x12 Marshall stack. The stack was miked up and recorded. Can’t have the speakers bleeding over the vocals so everyone had headphones. Except there weren’t enough headphones to go round so I was the only one that didn’t have headphones. So the track starts playing and Neil MacLellen (producer), Liam, Maxim and Keith et.al, are nodding in sync and all I can hear is the ‘tis tis tis’ of the headphone overspill. And Keith heavy breathing. Keith is at the back of the room in long shorts, tattooed calfs, and double Mohawk.
Suddenly Keith bends over double and screams “I’M THE FIRESTARTER” into the mic. Neck veins throbbing, snorting like a bull. Remember I’m the only one that can’t hear the music.
I got to hear the whole acapella of firestarter sung at me by Keith himself.
I absolutely concur with the other commenters- outside of his onstage persona, he was an adorable man. “Your mum would love him “.
    Miss him.
P.S. : I also drove him in my mini round London looking for W H Smiths to get Letrasets to find fonts for his “Inflicted“ tattoo. Double Mohican touching the roof liner in the passenger seat xx

i mean, yess for sure but also very derivant from what was happening in the european music scene of that days.
They mention that one of the very firsts albums was a response to the "Criminal Justice Act". This has been a strick set of laws put up in the UK in response to "Castel Morton Comon Festival". An illigal festival where the acid tekno rave scene that was already influenced by punk and the freak movement meat up. This brought the Spiral Tribe to embrace the van life culture and follow up in the illegal underground scene living UK to travel across Europe and some more pieces of world. The France influence took a lot from the hip hop scene (francecore) while here in Italy we was more in the punk crossover.
Check to "Foward the Revolution" by Spiral Tribe from almost same period.
Prodigy influenced world wide charts, Spiral influenced and fueled generations to come of european underground culture... and Prodigy.
In italy totally unrelated and never followed up in the rave scene but musically similar we had a group called Narcolexia in that timeline too. "Danza" and "Sovraccarico Sensoriale" realy deserve a spot in the tier list.

OMG.. memories of Grandmaster Flash. "don't push me coz I'm close to the ...edge". I used to horrify my sons rapping that line when they were irritating me. LMAO. Both my sons made music in their bedrooms..one at each end of the house, one into rap and hip hop (with his friend Lord Dazastah - known to me as Daz, his workmate, who loved my cat), the other techno./EDM - later became a teacher by day, DJ by night. I was in the middle. I used to play a music quiz game online where your opponent could choose the category and the young players always chose categories they thought I wouldn't know judging by my profile pic, but I'd beat them every time and they'd be like "how do you know Wiz Khalifa" or "What? You know Skrillex?". Don't judge a book.. hehe.
I did like Firestarter from the first time I heard it too- the raw energy of it. I even liked "Smack My Bitch Up" but my sons requested I never say that title as it sounded so ridiculous coming from their well-spoken mother's lips. 😅😅😅 If you made it this far, thanks for humouring me.

I can definitely confirm they crossed genres with Firestarter and gained a whole new audience of metallers. I've always been into metal but I mix in some EDM, trip-hop, jazz, classical etc, but even among my metal friends who were usually very elitist about their limited taste The Prodigy made an impact.
I remember trying to see The Prodigy when they played the second stage at Download Festival (rock/metal/alt fest not used to dance music at all) and you couldn't get near the stage. It felt like the entire festival was there to see them.
Keith was something special. By all accounts he was a lovely guy, one of the sweetest people you could ever meet. But isn't that usually the way? The people who look intimidating are often completely opposite when you actually start to talk to them.
His funeral was a testament to his impact on music and Britain. Thousands upon thousands of people stopped and showed their respects. I don't think anyone really expected how it impacted the country. No one knew he was a national treasure until it was too late to tell him.

I fell in love with them right at the start, not sure how I heard them, being in Australia, but got to see them live in 99, Keith in his straightjacket, Liam surrounded by 3 towers of 5 keyboards each, was so glad I got to give my youngest brother his 1st concert and he saw them, he does Djing these days. I legit cried when news broke of Keith's passing, "Breathe" is my anthem, to this day

Probably why he let me see them at 14 live where Keith & Maxim jumped off stage and danced with us. So they were also playing to under 18’s. They weren’t just playing to non substance takers but they really appreciated their roots. As Essex boys they often revisited the county for sets. RIP&firestarting Keith Flint. I first landed in London in the second half of the 80's, I lived the decade plus of the rave scene, I remember Keith popping up randomly at 6am throwing his crazy dance moves, the days of "Spiral Tribe".... I can bet that Keith got his American flag top in the legendary shop just before the lock on the right coming up from Camden station, the one that had as signage a small purplish pink punk mohican head. Prodigy, and Chemical Brothers to a certain extent, were the showcase of our generation and culture, pure freedom of expression and 100% commitment to embrace and rejoice, lust for experiencing and celebrating differences.

As a kid in the Uk during the 90's I was inspired to become a Bass player by bands like the red hot chili peppers and heavy acts like metallica or Iron maiden but one of my favorite songs was 'Their law' by Prodigy as well some other Prodigy tracks like Poison and of course the later Firestarter. I wasn't a fan of the more dance style tracks that much but I was still a fan of the 'dance' group while dressing and acting like a typical young metal head.
Seeing Prodigy live many years later (late 2000s) at Download festival the replacement for donnington/monsters of rock was a wild experience of a metal crowd at a metal festival crowding in to a tent (huge one) that was no where near the needed capacity to see a 90's dance act was something truely unique and a great time.

One of the greatest bands, my older brother used to play the prodigy from the start. I remember being in the back of his mates car cruising around sorting their party prescriptions on a friday evening. I was only 8 and he was over a decade older and still had to babysit me, we even shared a room so i had all his records to play around with when he wasn't there. Great times, me dancing on the back seat as we hurtled around manchester and they did what they had to do before a weekend sesh only to get dropped off when my mum finished work. Keith is/was awesome, i met him twice.
First time was waaay back when he still had long hair and was a raver and just doing the dancing for the videos, he wasnt *_that_* well known back then but i already knew who the prodigy was. I was at an illegal warehouse rave, saw this dude going at it hard and then realised who he was. At about 6am on a saturday morning the cops raided us, so everyone just bolted for any exit they could find and started running. There was about 60 of us all running up the streets of london trying to get away from the cops and eventually we stumbled across a McDonalds. As nobody had been eating due to the "consumables" and having a stomach the size of a wallnut, we was all starving so we all piled in to get breakfast, they had the radio on and it was playing dance music. We convinced them to turn it up a bit more and we basically turned Maccy's into a mini rave for about an hour, until someone called the cops and they dragged us all out.
For years i told my mates the story about being at the rave and at McD's with kieth and about 60 other people, but nobody believed me. Then about 10 years later Kieth did an interview and retold the exact same story. I was like "SEE I TOLD YOU IT WAS ALL TRUE!!"
The second time was on their last tour before he passed, they did a gig in Birmingham which i was lucky enough to get tickets for. One minute he was on stage, then he jumped down into the crowd and vanished, a few moments later he suddenly appeared right next to me, so i gave him a big hug and a pat on the back, then said "Go give em' hell" he smiled and dissapeared again into the crowd.
He was also a massive sports bike racing enthusiast, took part in quite a few races and owned his own racing team "Team Traction Control"

@@JJLAReacts my first experience of watching the Prodigy was in a rave club in 1990 in Blackpool called Zone , they were the live act.
Charley was just a white label record then.
Only about 300 people there, the place went off, energy was through the roof.
They started a movement out of the rave scene, the music had gone all noncey and piano E based.
Prodigy's break beats and XL label artists recaptured the rave scene.
Went to many Prodigy gigs over the years, funny to watch the parent ravers bring the ravelets with them.

British inquests seldom record a verdict of suicide unless its pretty much categorically proven. Suicide used to be illegal in Britain (with attempted suicide treated the same as attempted murder); and suicide victims were not allowed to be buried in consecrated graves and were hell bound as a result. Thus there was a general reluctance to record suicide as the cause of death unless it was irrefutable. My Gr Gr Grandad hung himself in 1905. He went upstairs on his own, as witnessed by his entire family who then found him hanging from a beam along with a suicide note. The death was recorded as caused by temporary insanity. Even with irrefutable evidence of suicide the inquest accepted a different cause.
