You may not agree with all of his views, but hey - you dont have to. Funny is funny.
What you may have missed about the reviews on newsnight you read is that they were a transcript of a conversation they were having rather than a written review.
Ian Hislop has been a recognisable face of the UK political comedy scene for far longer than Ricky Gervais has. Hislop became the editor of Private Eye, a satirical magazine started by Peter Cook (famously the comedic partner of Dudley Moore) since 1986 and he’s been a team captain on the BBC’s long running satirical news show Have I Got News For You, since it started in 1990. You maybe missed what Hislop said said in the interview but he essentially was saying that the material for Gervais’s first live show was disappointing in comparison to the likes of The Office. It wasn’t a general criticism of Gervais’s talent but a specific to that particular live show…and in general (if I recall correctly) stand up Ricky wasn’t as well received (initially anyway) as sitcom Ricky. Personally, I much prefer his sitcoms and films (I absolutely live Cemetery Junction) to what I’ve seen of his stand up but I don’t expect anyone to agree with me. But I can be pretty sure that Ian Hislop won’t be jealous of Ricky Gervais’s careen and is most likely quite happy with his career as a journalist, political satirist and political commentator…though I think he might want to give up on the sideline of being sued by people taking umbrage with what he’s printed in Private Eye.
He was also one of the writers of spitting image along with nick Newman which was just as important as well as private eye. I don't always find him funny but I can't see him being jealous of Ricky Gervais somehow. Just because someone doesn't like or get something doesn't mean they are jealous by any means.
I'm just adding my voice to the support for Ian Hislop. The man is a national treasure, and one of the funniest and most politically astute people in the UK. I don't think he is jealous of anyone.

The first post i watched of You,i thought You may be ironic, then after watching more,i realised that You were a kind and empathetic Soul. Ricky Gervais also had an animated show that used the Radio show as the audio. It is well worth watching as the animation is top drawer. Keep on keeping on.

Karl's Diary was pure fried comedy gold. PS - really enjoying your reaction videos, sir - keep up the good work!
JJ, Ian Hislop probably wasn't jealous. He's been making about 50k per episode of his TV show for a couple of decades. Also, Hislop is kind of one of the good guys. He's the editor of a satirical journalism magazine that's done quite a lot of important stuff.
Ricky's a fkn legend 😂 a fine example of a British legend who just doesn't give a f**k in the slightest. At heart he's a gem, its just the British way. He'll slag the hell outta ya but he'd probably help ya bury a body if you said please 😂
Okay, this is absolute truth. Ricky was entertainments manager at University of London students union. I was younger, I was the assistant manager. We'd work in the office and then work in the nightclub.
British council estates are full of working class bums who live on state benefits, because they don’t want to work!! Typical of the English in every way!!
If you haven't already then check out his series Extras - so funny. Other celebs in it basicslly not taking themselves seriously but a truly cringing one with David Bowie singing a song in which he calls him a fat little man... such a clever bit of writing all round.
Ricky's work has sadly had diminishing returns as it went on. The Office is fantastic and genuinely ground breaking. Extras was good. Everything after that is poor and/or banal. It's really sad and becomes increasingly clear that Stephen Merchant's input has gone under the radar for many.
Hislop is a very entertaining guy in his own right, and he has done a lot over the years. He's an editor, investigative journalist and TV panel show lead.
Good to hear Flanimals get a mention. They brightened up story telling time no end when my son was young. Super odd fact I’d never heard before though, was once managing Suede! Very cool.

He is not a stand up comic but his views are valid nonetheless as he has been
interesting fact about the BBC's 1-100 rating score, the latest season of Doctor Who is the only programme ever to not have the scores released to the public.
The DVD extras for The Office and Extras are great. Also on The Office : Martin Freeman (later The Hobbit, Sherlock) and Mackenzie Crook ( Pirates of the Caribbean, Game of Thrones).
I loved Ricky's popping those inflated egos with humor. I think most of us found it very funny, perhaps the stars he roasted are too think skinned, or he hit a nerve. Ricky often says what we are all thinking.
I wasn't a big Ricky fan before but I am warming to him now. As an aside Ian Hislop is almost an institution here in the UK. He is very clever and very funny and impossibly influential. 🤷
People always say The office started the mockumentary sitcom but forget "Operation good guys" came out a year or so before. It was shit in the sane style but followed police training. It was pretty good! From memory lasted about 3 series. I remember when the office came on thinking "oh they're doing a show like operation good guys". It wasn't as popular, but it was the first UK comedy series to be shot like that. Love the Office and Ricky though!
The look you liked at around 25 minutes in the black and white was from his music video "Equality street" I think. You should check it out. "Lady Gypsy" is a funny song and music video too.
Personally, I think Ricky Gervais is brilliant, he has more talent in his little finger than I have in my entire body. How anyone (apart from his 'foil' characters in his performances), could claim to hate him, is unbelievable. Gervais is Churchillian in his quick wit, and we share the same, dry and acerbic sense of humour. In my experience, North Americans sometimes take offence at things I humourously speak of, or about which I tell tales; perhaps this is why some may not love the guy.....simply misunderstanding his genius. Keep up the great work Ricky. I think you're one of the greatest!

I remember Ricky saying after he'd achieved success that "I should have done this years ago". His girlfriend said, "You couldn't have done it back then, it took you all those years to gain the necessary experience.
Ricky Gervais is the man. No compromises, saying it all but staying light if you are intelligent enough to understand the meaning behind it. I absolutely adore him.
You looked like you’ve never seen Afterlife by Ricky. His best show ever on Netflix.
I thoroughly enjoyed it with the "After" being The London Stadium and "LIFE" being the fabulous Boleyn:)

Just back from Essex which I have not been to for 7 years but I am home ,safe and well, back in civilisation on the border of South East London and Kent now.

@@Isleofskye yes all of that makes perfect sense, thank you.
I really like You Mate. I have watched a few of Your posts. You obviously have a great sense of humour, and come over well. The first post i watched of You,i thought You may be ironic, then after watching more,i realised that You were a kind and empathetic Soul. Ricky Gervais also had an animated show that used the Radio show as the audio. It is well worth watching as the animation is top drawer. Keep on keeping on.
The Ricky Gervais Show podcasts were some of the funniest things I've ever listened to. When they adapted them into the animated TV series, the visual cartoon gags just added a further layer to the comedy that had me in absolute stitches - I strongly recommended you check them out if you haven't already, JJ!
50K per episode is peanuts for a National Treasure.
20K
Please more of your reactions to Ricky Gervais... This one was great..and very relatable... Thank you❤
His series called Extras was fantastic
We British are very rarely 100% joking and equally rarely 100% serious.
When he did the golden globes 😊 he was Brilliant.
So true in what he said 😂
Did it 5 times.
You simply cannot come up with a comedy like "The Office" if you haven't worked in an office.
First saw Ricky on the 11 o'clock Show. The same show birthed Ali G.
Yeah, where he did a stand up bit I seem to remember!
Yes the same
been getting your videos via the algorithm and i have to say i dig them. your voice is so AsMR, i have you on while i'm gaming. subbed today
Ricky's a fkn legend 😂 a fine example of a British legend who just doesn't give a f**k in the slightest. At heart he's a gem, its just the British way. He'll slag the hell outta ya but he'd probably help ya bury a body if you said please 😂
Ian Hislop is a GOAT
lol youtube algorithm knows me so well. I have never seen your channel before, this was lovely. Thank you 😄
Okay, this is absolute truth. Ricky was entertainments manager at University of London students union. I was younger, I was the assistant manager. We'd work in the office and then work in the nightclub.
Pretty sure Hislop isn't jealous
He's a woke clown
British council estates are full of Rickys.
British council estates are full of working class bums who live on state benefits, because they don’t want to work!! Typical of the English in every way!!
I loved Suade. They're still in my playlist. Would never have dreamed Ricky was anything to do with them 😮
Ricky and steve reading Karls diary , You will piss yourself laughing
Yes!!!
"Id never seen so many cross eyed people in one place.."
No! Just watch the Ricky Gervais Show. Watching videos with no context is silly. Its episode 7, but they often talk about past episodes
He needs to watch the whole thing
EQUALITY STREET is THE funniest song i've heard, you should definitely do a review of it, so many nuggets of gold in it!
Love the fact that you got Ricky Gervais.
If you haven't already then check out his series Extras - so funny. Other celebs in it basicslly not taking themselves seriously but a truly cringing one with David Bowie singing a song in which he calls him a fat little man... such a clever bit of writing all round.
How comes I never hear someone talk about his program Extras which I loved my favourite
Very cool.
Grrat reaction. I love Ricky, but Ian Hislop, too. He definitely speaks his mind, and isnt scared of the establishment. X
Thank you. I enjoyed your review.
Loved this reaction 😂 Great choice
Hey JJ, have you seen Ricky's series "After Life"? It's my fave things he's done, poignant, sad, but so funny.
When I watched it, I'd never been so confused about whether to laugh or cry at parts lol.
Would definitely watch it again
It’s a masterpiece
JJ, I clicked 2 watch your reaction. U crack me up, u r SO refreshing!
(I had 2 subscribe) I have loved Ricky 4eva, especially After Life (some of the best TV I’ve seen) Ricky is so witty, wise + courageous!
"Life's Too Short" with the cameo from Johnny Depp is also a must-see. 😅

Great video, thank you!
Ian hislop is editor of one of the most respected political satire magazines in the world, has been a team captain on have I got news for you. (News based comedy show)for over 20 years and has been sued god knows how many times by political figures and so on because he is fearless and says what he thinks about public figures without worrying over reprisals. Even Jon Stewart is an Ian hislop fan boy. In Short he has earned more respect in intelligent circles than Ricky by a wide margin.
I love how Ricky speaks his mind and doesn’t care who likes it or not
The bit you were laughing at around 25.00 is the music video Equality Street made for Comic Relief. Go check it
when you laughed so much at "patch of wee" it triggered me to laugh a lot too, so good
A lot of famous people went to UCL, and amazingly, so did my son!
My favourite reaction with you. Thanks for exploring the best philosopher of our time. And he produces such poignant shows. ❤😂❤
More laughter from me. regarding the talented Ricky and JJA reaction - laughing
I highly recommend some of his other Productions, 'Extras', 'Derek' and 'After Life'
Can't get into Derek but Afterlife and Extras are amazing.
@@Cleow33 Fair enough. I would give it a chance as it has a couple of his best scenes in it. Karl giving an elderly person's grabbing relatives what for, is wonderful
Nobody gets to read a speech without it being approved and if it's not approved or not the speech that you handed into give then they would take you off the microphone
Lol. Sometimes you need more than 5 seconds of research. Take some time and look up Ian Hislop again. Huge. Political satire. A legend.
The Ricky Gervais Show is perfect RUclips reaction content, and the YT algorithm loves it
Team Gervais!
You really gotta see The Ricky Gervais Show. It's a roughly 20 minute animated show. I have the full series up in playlists in HD instead of the low 360p versions reactors normally use. Same with An Idiot Abroad with Karl Pilkington, but they are about 40 minutes or so. I got the series up of that too
FYI Ian Hislop has been on a TV Show called Have I Got News For You since 1990, he is a journalist who fights corruption a lot. I would highly recommend checking out the Have I got news for you show. Ian is not the most funniest person on the show but has his moments and his willingness to challenge controversial guest on the show is fantastic to see.
by "contraversial" you mean "slightly right of centre for the UK, and moderate left if looking globably". Of course Hislop has zero to say about the 200 million murdered in the name of his personal beliefs...
@@miff227 By Controversial I was referring to the guests he has challenged on the show not himself. And by controversial I mean for many different reasons, being political views or just scandals they have been involved in.
The reason the office was so good is we've all had a boss like David Brent, so relatable.
The Ricky Gervais Show is hilarious and I've listened so many times throughout my life I play the YT audios to get to sleep now 😊
Love ricky, he's down to earth 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
4:56 Shoutout the to Psion Organiser there on Ricky's desk, (model 3a or 3c maybe) those things were so cool back before mobile phones took over!
Anyway cheers as always JJ!
