Nick and Jodi react to a comedic video from a comedian named Al Murray. He tries to quiz the audience to think of a country that England has not taken over at some point. It’s insane what he knows.

Al Murray is a extremely intelligent historian... The character he plays in this video is the Landlord, it's a satire joke at British landlords of Pubs.
Satirical.
Al Murray studied at Oxford and I believe he has a masters in History so he knows his stuff
He did get an MA in Modern History
He had two master degrees and speaks two languages
One in geography aswel
He also goes on to tell the Americans in the audience "you've never won a war on your own, have you?".
He has an Oxford degree in history and speaks fluent German, the pub landlord is just a character.
Al took history at Oxford University and has done many historical programmes that you can find on RUclips. Mickey Flanagan Deli Belly i(or any of his stuff would be highly recommended
Al Murray does the same sort of thing as Sasha Baron Cohen did with Ali G. I remember Oprah interviewing Ali G and her slightly realising something might be amiss. Ali G was a master stroke that led young people "in the ghetto" to literally quote him verbatim. I watch these reactions out of interest, as it is very educational to observe how we master this craft.
Not just a comedian, but a HIGHLY intelligent Man!
His act on stage (accent, clothing, beer etc) is all put on for the “Al Murray” character he created. In reality he’s a super smart, middle class, Oxford educated historian. So you could probably mention any of 200 countries and he could probably rattle off an answer.
Sorry mate but there is no 'Al Murray' character. There is however a 'Pub Landlord' character 😉😊
@@eddhardy1054 yeah the character he plays is the "Pub Landlord". He is Al Murray
Well, not quite because there isn't 200 countries. There are 193 recognised by the UN, a few in dispute and a considerable number of territories (i.e. Cayman Islands, Tahiti, Gibraltar, Puerto Rico). You are, just as Al was in his routine, close but not totally factually correct.
@@John-re2qwHow many countries no longer exist as “recognised by the UN”? Have a look back over a thousand years, add it to those currently extant.
The problem with pedantry is that it’ll come back and bite you in the ass.
Job done.
It's all common knowledge to most British people.
It really is, I'm always astounded when ppl are amazed at his knowledge. This is year 11 history
Really? There was one guy in the audience that thought people in Peru spoke Portuguese...
There is always one
The problem is American education is shit.
@@richo1234 that parts hart to keep track off in all fairness how many countries are in South America??
Hi Jodi, there was absolutely no BS in Al Murray’s act. It’s all factual. Al as others have said, is an authority on history after studying at Oxford University.
He studied World history, British politics, British culture and currant events. He also studied Modern history at St Edmund Hall Oxford.
Don’t get suckered in & pass it off as, “BS!”. You do so at your own peril.
Al Murray is a historian, watch some of his TV Documentaries. He’s phenomenally intelligent & read History at University.
Oh & while you’re at it, read some books & study some maps.
7:26...No the Viking bit is fairly accurate. The Norwegian King, Harald Hardada, led a massive invasion of England in 1066. He defeated the northern Earls at the Battle of Fulford but was in turn defeated and killed at the Battle of Stamford Bridge later that year. This was the last ever Viking Invasion of England and Hardrada is now known as the Last of the Vikings...oh and the US have been working for us since the early 1800s. Winston Churchill realised the Allies couldn't defeat the Nazis without US help so 'persuaded' them to enter WW2 even though the US Government & people were for the most part rabidly isolationist, so cheers 😉😊...🤣🤣🤣
USSR did most of the work against Germany though
Only at the end...and let's face it Stalin couldn't be trusted could he. If it wasn't for the Yanks then the Soviets would probably have rolled right over Germany then France and then the UK.
@@eddhardy1054 at the end? They got involved in June 1941
USSR defeated 80% of Germany's force's and invaded Berlin
@@chrisklitou7573 but they didn't start making a real difference until the end and don't forget Stalin and Hitler were allies at the start...and Stalin turned out to be as big a monster as Hitler.
@@eddhardy1054 no USSR joined the allies in June 1941
WW2 started in September 1939
Ended in 1945 so it wasn't at the end
Al Murray is a clever bloke that’s why he’s so funny
His answer for Norway was that they used to be Vikings and "we saw them off in the end". He was referring to the regular Viking raids they were made on Britain and those eventually stopping as being how Britain beat Norway. It wasn't about their hats, that was just a follow-up joke
I don’t think we have the same assumptions about comedians over here. Many of our most famous comedians and actors come from the Cambridge footlights. There are a group that came up through the clubs etc but most went to university and many went to top universities. The comedians are expected to interact with the audience in a live show so they have to be quick enough to respond with humour.
DO NOT rile up the british! hahahahaha
oh wait....too late..we are anoyed now oh shit! lol
Hi Al Murray He is a self confessed history fanatic and graduated with a degree in the subject from St Edmund Hall, Oxford University. I hope this helps.
America didn't beat the British, it was the Americans, the French, the Spanish, The Dutch. Its irrefutable that without the might of 3 of the biggest Europen countries to help them, they would have had literally no chance! And thats the purest form of the word literal.
Yeah bur you miss the joke. To the British they controlled the world and had colonies in most countries so it was their way.
He has made a 10 part documentary covering the the period D Day landings to fall of Berlin. He travels the route in a Jeep, I believe its on here Al Murrays Road to Berlin.
Actually most British comedians are super intelligent. Many are university graduates (plenty from Oxford and Cambridge) and quite a lot are former teachers and professors. Never underestimate a comedian or take them on lightly!!
A history degree from Oxford University does come in handy, not completely convinced they actually get this..
Noticed you went all quiet after Murray had other facts after his joke about how the independence war was a lucky escape😅
This lot can't take a joke...worst reaction l saw on this subject.
Ive seen him live, hilarious. Hes also very intelligent and well educated!
Did you say weak in terms of the U.S joke.. It was a fact, the U.S only got anywhere due to the French involvement, hence the lucky escape. The war of 1812 made it clear.
Haha. That is taking one aspect of a win and giving it all the credit. Are you saying that bringing in Allie’s is not something that most people do in wars? Are you saying the British didnt? What about the Hessians the British brought in? The Americans Allie’s were successful. Come on man. The USA joke was weak because it was originally owned by UK and then America took it away from them.
@@BoringReviews No - That's just it. You do not know much in terms of history which was weak. I was saying and stating the fact that with the rebellion was impossible without the French, most historians will list the conflict as primarily a French victory. The French were the rival power of the British at the time and a major world power if the two worlds super powers of the day, so bringing up a few Hessians hold no weight. The British were fighting the French, Spanish and fighting off invasions around the world but you would know that, clearly.
The joke made sense as in, the US objective was to brake free which was achieved but only just with help, the British viewed as luck for the most part. You labelled it weak because of you own bias and limited perception.
@@BoringReviews And the Americans took nothing, the peoples rebellion were British, coming from the 13 colonies. The people fighting the British were British as well as the founding Fathers. They were supplied with everything they had from the French.
It’s funny that you think I did not know this and that you needed to include this part. As much crap as Americans get from everyone else, they need to stop thinking we’re all dumb as rocks.
They were Americans as soon as they declared independence. Your point is weird. France was at war with England for centuries. England had control of territories all over the world. They maintained control for a very long time before and after the war. The American army was full of militias of farmers and regular people. Britain had the strongest Military in the world and they knew it. They lost to colonists with help sure. To say the French were the only reason is very lame. But it also shows sour grapes on your end. It’s like you were alive during the war and fought in it. The fact is that the colonists won. They did something other territories wanted to do and it was the beginning of the end for the British Empire. And the beginning of the American world power. A power we still hold on to today. You’re welcome for WW2 by the way. Also, since you know it all don’t forget UK and USA are Allies. All good. I won’t reply to any other nonsense you reply to here. Have a great day and thanks for watching and spreading negativity.
@@BoringReviews Ok, utter nonsense, why do a video on a subject you know nothing about.
The British had no Empire at that time, and after losing the the Americas, they went on to build what's known as the second British Empire.
Where they defeated the U.S during the war of 1812 while defeating Napoleon, they went on to dominating the globe for almost 200 years, they controlled the world and its trade. You clearly live up to the stereotype of being as thick as a Yank.
It WW1 and only WW1 that sent the British Empire into decline, do not do video's you know about about. And Vietnam had no allies and they still put you people on your arses so save it.
And again - It was French Naval power that was decisive, not American farmers. Thick.
If you enjoy when they joke about America you could check out "All Murray Vs Americans" or "Dylan Moran Americans". Or maybe something with Jim Jefferies?
Al Murray is an accomplished history expert, apart from being a very funny guy.
That's called a historian
you need to see this man Live.I have and honestly he is the smartest comic I have ever seen. He starts doing an audience interview and recalls all names and jobs the man is incredible , yes as has been said he is a war historian however he isn't fluent in german as he said himself. its a script but you haven't gone that far yet. My opinion top 3 comics ever
extremely smart man, love this
He did a documentary about ww2 were he travelled around the battlefields around Europe. He drives a ww2 jeep. He is knowledgeable respectful and gives a small insight into the horror of war.
He's a history professor... So he just knows
The only thing funnier than Al's genius quick jokes is Americans thinking it's all just jokes.
He has done history at Oxford w
Not to be very rude, but its the difference between an American education and a British education
I used to have a work colleague who like Al Murray studied history at Oxford, he used to do the same thing every day at work. He knew events that happened each day of the year throughout history. He told us that was the way they taught history at Oxford, they would throw dates and countries at you all the time and you had to know the relevant facts so it just became second nature.
Thanks guys! This is his "Pub Landlord"-character. He is wery funny and educated. And he has a vast catalogue of "jobs". Stand up is just a part of that. You need to watch more non-US stand up, that is if you can handle non-PC stand up. And women comedians, not US, Like Sarah Millican, Catharine Tate and her characters, which are many, like for starters. UK comedians are easy starting point. Hope you will enjoy😍😍
That moment when he gets mardy and says weak then al educates him on 1812 silence
Did you just say you know what Jodie is thinking?
Hey people, Jodie can think, apparently
Oops! Did I type that out loud?
😂
He is a Don at history at one of the five best University in the world
His an Oxford educated historian
The joke was comparing Vikings having horny helmets and the Norwegians being horny helmets, but he was actually correct with the Vikings, the part of the reason William the conqueror won the Battle of Hastings in 1066 was that Harold had to beat off the Viking army in the north then rush down to fight the Norman's. Yes, I know it is a modern spin, and Vikings never had helmets with horns on them.
William the conqueror was of Viking decent, they switched to christianity and were given lands in France called Normandy, he was actually known as William the Bastard
His grandfather was a Lieutenant colonel in 131 Parachute Regiment and was killed at Dunkirk.
He is an ancestor of William Makepeace Thackeray.
He’s a Satirist, I can see they think he’s for real, the guys an intellectual
He knows all this stuff because he studied Modern History at Oxford.
Your face looked really annoyed for a long time after the USA one 😂
Nah. It’s all good. We have fun with it.
I just loved your face following all the historical information he was divulging ...... that look of incredulity.
A lot of British comedians are highly intelligent: Jimmy Carr, Rowan Atkinson, Sacha Baron Cohen and Steven Fry all went to Cambridge or Oxford..
used to be a history teacher
All Murray has a degree in history from Oxford very claver man.
Pretty sure there should be pub landlord in there somewhere 😂
It's interesting that Dominican Republic is not mentioned. They of course as a nation have never had any victories of any sort, but they do celebrate one special win, and that is "Gabe is emigrating" day.
Former Spanish colony so when we beat the Armada in 1588 we beat them. Job done, and we haven't heard from them since.
Tell the audience, they picked the countries
AL Murray ....."Why Bacon Proves The Existence Of God"
Al is playing a character the pub landlord a patriotic brit.
As regards American stuff its just a joke don’t take offence if you say you didn’t the looks on your faces said different🤷♂️ its just British humour nothing is ment to offend.
Expanding your horizon with comedians I would recommend Victor Borge. He is an original old school comedian, highly skilled and trained in classical piano, but uses that and his unique sense of humor to make fun of classical music in a joyful way. No profanity, just dry, silly and witty jokes. He is Danish and speaks English with a funny accent. A good introduction video would be Victor Borge - A Night at the Opera (magyar felirat)
That sounds good!!
Les Dawson does really funny piano pieces that really make you cringe and he was a classical pianist, it's really hard to do that
React to " every country England as ever invaded visualised"
Hadn't you heard of 1812-1814?
I believe I read about 1811 and the years before in a book and 1815 and beyond. Not 1812-1814. Those pages must have been ripped out.
@@BoringReviews ah, most likely by an American sore at losing, makes sense! Lol.
Well, to simplify it, we won, you lost. 😁
"weak"...getting your independence really isnt something to brag about the UK was fighting France and Mexico, pretty much all of their troops and supplies were being used to fight France so they only left a smaller army in the USA as they didnt think the US would attack so it took all of your effort to beat a small under equipped army
and modern America really isn't anything great, they got beat by Vietnam and they were pretty much forced to leave the middle east - as the saying goes America has the money and the technology but the UK has the brains and tactics - you should also look up the story about the UK nuking America twice during a training drill, they knew an attack was coming twice but were too stupid to counter it
Who could miss those Vulcan bombers, they were huge delta winged aircraft.
The man is an Oxford historian.
Please react to .

Israel. The Brits picked up and left. The Brits then thought that the 5 Arab states that declared war on Israel would win but they lost too.
He used to be a history professor
I think he obtained a degree in History from Oxford University.
Check out Jimmy Carr. He is the best. Also his panel show 8 out of ten cats does Countdown. It is hilarious. You won't be disappointed
1812-1814
Nick and Jodi, that person that you saw performing onstage is a character of Al Murray's that's called The Pub Landlord - he's Al's representation of the most extreme right-wing, boorish and obnoxious individual that you could ever imagine.
Al Murray himself is a descendant of William Makepeace Thackeray the writer of Vanity Fair and he also has other ancestors who were from the British aristocracy. He studied at Oxford University where he read for an M.A. in Modern History. He was also awarded an honorary M.A. by the University of Bedfordshire in 2014 and was also awarded a PhD ( Doctorate ) in Social Science by the University of Wolverhampton in 2017.
That's how much of a genius he is in that he's managed to combine his consummate knowledge of history with that total knobhead that you just watched and reacted to onstage, isn't he? Despite him speaking so fast you can guarantee that everything that he said was completely verifiable and accurate.
You should watch some more of his videos especially the one where he's talking to people in the audience and asking them where in the world they hail from....his destruction of a certain American man called Neil is just hilarious.
Other British comedians that you should definitely watch and react to are Lee Evans, Eddie Izzard, Peter Kay, Johnny Vegas, Michael McIntyre and the double act of Armstrong & Miller. Lee Evans is really funny and swears a lot but his imitation of his wife is just hilarious. Eddie Izzard is equally as funny and you should watch and react to all of his different versions of Death Star canteen from Star Wars, they go from his stage act version onto a Lego version and then onto an animated one. Michael McIntyre is a genius at accents - most of which are from around the U.K. but he also does Irish, South African and Australian ones as well. Both Peter Kay and Johnny Vegas are from the northwest of England and they have very distinctive and broad accents which I have no problem with especially with me living in that part of England.
The double act that I mentioned, Armstrong & Miller, are hilarious especially when they do their 'chav' World War II R.A.F. pilots - they're such idiots that if they'd have really fought during that war we'd all be speaking German now here in the U.K. Their very short sketch about Gordon Ramsay is very funny and they have another one called the Predictive Text Authority which is equally as funny. Alexander Armstrong's version of 'Who Do You Think You Are?' is great especially when he discovers some very unexpected and shocking things about his grandparents. That's obviously a part of their television comedy programme. In reality Alexander Armstrong was found to be a direct descendant of William the Conqueror when he appeared on the real 'Who Do You Think You Are?' and that's obviously no joke, is it? ✌🤣✌🇬🇧🇺🇸
You saved me typing all that , thanks mate lol 😂
No probs, @@petermizon4344, it's what I used to do for a living anyway so it's second nature for me to do it simply to while away the time. I don't think he is "extreme" right wing; in the States he would be centre right
If you think that the character of The Pub Landlord is an example of an "extreme right-wing" person then you'll be in for shock if actually ever meet one.
Well, @@The-Underbaker, that's never likely to happen, is it? Especially when you consider that I've been completely teetotal for the past 19 years and I only venture into pubs if I need to go to the toilet. I reiterate to you and anyone else that the character that Al Murray portrays onstage is merely his own very entertaining creation and not how he is in real life.
Try Jimmy Carr "The Roast Of Rob Lowe", and then try literally anything else by Jimmy Carr
Working for us ever since means after the war in 1812. It wasn't a defeat. It was a peace treaty as America wanted it slaves that had escaped back. Britain said no and agreed to let what was captured by the British go back to America but we released the slaves.
Since then anytime there's been a scuttle in the world where Britain used to police it now America does hense "working for the British ever since"
the Americans did not defeat us, it was the Spanish, french, and german mercenaries and a hand full of Americans if we had moved our troops from Canada you would still be part of the British empire

why are your videos so short? Can't you watch anything for more than 6-8mins?
Never beat Germany. The U.S and Soviet Union, yes. But the Brits?! Instead England was invaded by the saxons aka germans which never left that island. Lol.
U need to learn your history bud world war 1 English and French Germany defeated world war 2 English French, U.S.A and Russia Germany defeated plus the Saxon did get defeated by the English so that makes it 3 times 😢😢😢
Saxons were not called Germans, they were related to the Germanic peoples, and their homeland was destroyed by the Franks (also Germanic people.)
That was before England was a country, and it was Britannia under Romano-Britons and native Britons nor was Germany a country either.
The Saxons/Angles/Jutes all became the English, so later beat off the Vikings (Also Germanic) then lost to the Normans (Germanic people again.)
England had formed, Germany still never formed, as a single state. Won't happen for another few hundred years. Britain did beat Germany, Germany has never beat Britain.
Also it was not really an invasion by Saxons, Angles and Jutes. It was largely migrations and raids. Which are different so get your facts right.
How does he know ?
It's called being educated outside of the US..
That's how
It’s more of a rhetorical question. My way of being impressed with his ability to want to learn more about the world on his own. It’s funny how my compliment to Barbs is your inspiration to insult the USA
