Al Murray's comedy is mostly based around sarcasm & irony which many of us in the UK excel at & frequently use in daily conversation, usually it's meant to be amusing & funny but it can so easily be employed to be ruthlessly cutting & deliberately hurtful too. Finding the right moment to use it to amuse can be a bit tricky sometimes, but when you do get all the balance of exact moment & situation just right the result can often be hilarious, even to the recipient of it.

The joke he made about the Australian anthem reminds me of the scene in the Jaws movie when Hooper says to Chief Brody, ''It doesn't make sense for a guy who hates water to live on an island.''

As other people have already mentioned The Star Spangled Banner, your national anthem is British, actually English. The music was taken from an English drinking song which was written in England and played in pubs and clubs around England, it was written in the 18th century. The lyrics of Star Spangled Banner were written by an American but the music is English.

As J C mentioned, the Star Spangled Banner was written to the tune of a British 18th Century drinking song. Usually sung in Gentlemen`s Club`s that catered to the Upper Classes. It was said, that the tune chosen by General G.A. Custer for the 7th Cavalry, was an Irish drinking song. Also, the Royal Navy`s Hearts Of Oak was used as the Liberty Song.

Let's not forget that the american traitors in the 1770s (BTW Washington was a British army officer before he committed treason....I seem to recall) stole the tune of God Save the King and put their own words to it. Pretty common behaviour for revolutionaries allowing them to think seditious words while standing for the national anthem. However, every American I've met thinks that this is some form of coincidence. Critical thinking may not be dead, but it needs some oxygen when it comes to most Americans and anything outside America. :)

It starts off like a Bavarian drinking song, then just at the point that other national anthems would stop and let you get back to whatever you're doing it abruptly switches into something resembling the charge of the light brigade.

Yes, the national anthem has changed from queen to king and her to him(where necessary) it changed the second the queen passed. Anything official containing queen has changed, such as the queens guard are kings guard now, and anything starting with HM in it has changed from her majesty to his majesty such as HMRC(basicly who collects our tax) and HMS (the letters before the name of any royal navy ship). The next 2 monarchs will also be kings if nothing happens to them, so it will be king for the foreseeable future.

The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith for the Anacreontic Society, a men's social club in London. "To Anacreon in Heaven" (or "The Anacreontic Song"), with various lyrics.

It's a shame you didn't get to hear all the joke at the end. With reference to if the National Anthem will change to God Save Our Gracious King. yes it will. Also all military and civil uniforms which have the Queens crown will have to change to the Kings crown, this will also be evident with commonwealth countries, like Canada, NZ and Australia. However, in good military order, the Kings crown will be phased in slowly. The first to change is the Royal Yeomanry (also known as the Beefeaters) at the Tower of London, who have already shown off their new uniform, and will be followed by the Guards division and Household division as they are all on public display daily and will be front and centre at the Coronation. The London Metropolitan Police and the various regional police forces throughout the country will also slowly change over to the Kings crown.

The tune of the American Anthem is an 18th Century British drinking song.
The earliest image of the Stars and Stripes was carved on the wall of a church in Washington North England in the 13th century. This was then taken as the coat of arms of the Washington family and so on to America. In the Medieval Language of Arms, Stars represent Spurs and Horizontal Red Stripes represent rivers of blood. Any medieval soldier seeing that would probably decide that he needs to be elsewhere!
Whilst Americans like to pretend that you are foreigners, we all know that you are in fact British!

And despite him saying we dont get earthquakes in the UK a few years ago, several after Al said that, we did get an earthquake in Kent, the SE of the UK.
It was Very mild compared to others around the world. TBH I didn't even realise it was an earthquake. I thought our cat had gotten up on the bookcase behind me, and was having a really good scratch, causing the bookcase to bang on the wall! Lol.
As for the NI, no doubt when it was written, and then adopted as the NI, about 1745, it was written for a different UK to whst we have now.
The sentiment of God Save the King/Queen is fine, it's just the slow drone of the melody that I don't go much on.
Do I wish it could change to an alternative for things that don't involve the monach, like sporting events, yes. By all means keep God Save the King for when the Royals are in attendance. But for other events, they should have an alternative, something like I Vow To Thee My Country, that is a Hymn that gets a lot of people singing at the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall every year. It's a Beautiful song. Ok, I am biased as it was one of my late Mum's favourites, and I grew up listening to it, but it is good.

The "intolerant" attitudes that he expresses are part of the CHARACTER that he is playing.
He is playing an affable, nationalist, bigot, know-all.
The kind which you find in pubs across the UK, surrounded by fellow drinkers who learn everything that they know from their mates in the pub; and from tabloid news papers.
He displays all of the attitudes and prejudices of that type of self-serving person; which you find different variants of around the world!
The jokes are NOT homophobic, racist, xenophobic, abusive, bigoted or intended to harm.
The character is Al Murray's observation of THAT TYPE OF PERSON!
In tandem with that, he explores some of the subjects that people in the audience might find difficult. He tackles the subjects in robust irreverent terms; creating a frame, from which others can explore the subject without feeling shame, anger, fear or hate.
    *You see?*

England doesnt have its own National Athem. it is God save the Queen, which was the Nat Anth for Aus until 1984 !! now obviously back to God save the King. I think England should take a new anthem. my suggestions would be "land of hope and glory" or "Jeruselem". and btw the QC (Queens council) turned overnight into KC (Kings council)

Good to see you geta kick out of this. Each of the three nations in the UK other than England have their own Anthem, used when only that nation is being represented. As a Scot I can say they one we use, Flower of Scotland has never really appealed to me. I find it a bit of a dirge and it's anti-English stance always seems very narrow minded and disappointing. I much preferred the one we used to use, Scotland the Brave. God Save the King was originally written just after the 1745 Jacobite rebellion and as such, one of it's many verses is quite anti-Scots, though this has been dropped and is never sung these days. There is one more very good video of Al out there which I hope you get round to doing, Al Murray - Secretary.
