    One thing that you left out for him specifically is to NOT put on the Burn resist dark impulse trinket, his burn is weird because it is guaranteed to land so you basically just give him horror by using it with high unchecked power

      yeah, I learned that the hard way when I put a 66% heat shield AND a burn dark impulse on him "surely I'll be immune to burn now, completely nullifying the downside of unchecked power" little did I know...

      I tend to put the one that gives strength if first, and give +6 speed on burn on him. Gives me some juicy burning stars

    No matter how good he actually is, the Occultist has to be one of the funnest characters in the game. He's got so many memes:
    -Wyrd Reconstruction and the +0 CRIT Bleed
    -Malediction Cause of Death
    -To Stars, or not to Stars?
    -Murder Weapon Anemesis
    -Chaotic Offering stunning you
    -Roof Spaghetti
    -Shank

    his pull is underated its one of the best abilitys to get rid of annoying back mob fast ..just pull it then oneshot it with your dmg dealer

      The issue is that pulls can be resisted and frontline units usually have moves that moves them back to the front (and moving the back line unit back)
      HWM + Jester combo with take aim, encore, and shoot, is still by far the most reliable.

      What I mean is that ENEMIES have movement abilities that get them to where they want to be.
      M (melee), M, R (ranged), R.
      Pull R to front row.
      R, M, M, R.
      Enemy ranged goes first (always more speed)
      M, R, M, R
      On melee action, melee moves themselves forward.
      M, M, R, R
      This doesn't always happen, but it's surprisingly frequent.

      ​@@magi_stricide These movement skills aren't strong at all. The cultist with two swords has a movement skill that moves her up front but it does around 6 dmg.

    I've said it before and I'll say it again. Wyrd would be so much better if crit heals worked like crit damage and max rolled 100% of the time.

      @Riley Fosti Fine, I'll elaborate more. The whole reason Wyrd is a bad healing move is the inconsistency it carries. Due to it being the only heal that's not a set number, it's also the only move in the game that does not maximize on a crit despite having a forced crit with Unchecked Power. Maximizing on a crit would also make it so you don't actively avoid pressing the button when you have 2 UP tokens, because a crit 2 heal feels like shit and gets heroes killed.

    I think Malediction would work better if it had it's own unique DOT that ignored the enemy's resistances so it would be more reliable and make Ritualist more appealing as a path.

      True, also maybe it should require less unchecked power, because to me it looks like it needs way too much setup to payoff: you need to wait a couple rounds to generate the unchecked power, then a turn to use it, then wait for your teammates to attack the enemy a few times, hoping they don't resist; all the while you could have simply attacked the enemy and done more normal damage

    I know the occultist is not top tier, but damn the meatballs and spaghetti gameplay speaks to me. “Dont heal the leper, think about the 15% crit + 5 on the trinket” 😂

    I've found that the most obvious way to get Wyrd Reconstruction to function decently as a heal within a team is just to lean into the Bleed. Get Sodden Sweater as a pickup from the Shroud so you heal when you get the Bleed proc every other Bleed and resist it with the huge +Bleed Resist on your tank, run him with Runaway so she can Cauterize and turn the Bleed into even more Heal once you have the situation calmed down, that sort of thing.

    People really sleep on Malediction. It's insane when paired in a riposte team (HWM + MAA), typically taking only one or two maledictions to kill a boss with ripostes alone. Think of it as increasing the damage on the target by 6 (including DOT damage). When upgraded, the res piercing debuff alone makes the skill worthwhile.

    Tip for Warlock fans: if you have to chose, put your first upgrade point for OCC into abyssal artillery!
    Fight's will not be lasting long enough to justify an early chaotic offering upgrade, and burning starts is not up all the time/isn't appropriate to use/set up all the time. Abyssal Artillery is always available, is consistent and when upgraded is a convenient unchecked power dump to not barbeque your occultist.
    Obv the double stun is stupid useful too.

    Warlock Occultist is some of the best fun I've had with the game. There are a lot of opportunities for his nuking to go awry, between his self-debuffs and enemies hyper-focusing him with things like Blind, etc., but the guy just *shreds* huge HP, clowns on the backline, and can easily be a solid backup healer with auto-crit healing between nukes, with only a modest investment of skill and items producing big results.

    Would you think that malediction would work alot better if it worked like runaway's controlled burn?
    Where enemies in said rank of the malediction would receive either of the 3 dots, and the token stays around for 3 turns?
    Edit: also I'd like to confirm that teammates that are moved by enemies are not considered to be moved by the enemy when the other characters are effected, for example:
    You have jealous whispers on a character, then another teammate gets moved by an enemy and disrupts the teammate with jealous whispers, the guy with jealous whispers gets a positive token.

    14:00 I feel like that stun rolls way more often than 4% but then I remembered there feels like there’s also a ton of negative quirks that can proc stun or become stun because of an unlucky double daze that there’s probably more interactions going on than I’m clocking at the time. And those % triggers on a lot of those quirks feels excessively high in a lot of cases.

    A recommendation to get the most out of your videos shuffle is to not assume whoever is watching the guide already knowns the basics for every character
    For example you keep mentioning specific moves like wyrd reconstruction and stars without even going through what they are briefly first
    I would assume most people watching a guide aren't already experts at playing said character
    Which makes it so you either need to watch the entire video twice to get use out of it or do your own research before even watching the video

    Two things I really like about the pull in addition to what you said are that it clears corpses even if it misses the damage, and that most backline enemies can only use weak retreating moves if pulled to the front, so if you can’t kill them, you will still greatly reduce their effectiveness.

    Despite some issues with the hero, I still find him very fun to play. Pull, tentacles, curses and stars all feel great. Maybe Malediction is good against the Act 5 boss?
    I like that he's effective against cultists due to how common both block and dodge are in those fights. Funny how Stars might be big best button and got indirectly buffed when Evangelists were given block.
    I also like running Stab on Warlock. On early turns in simpler fights I usually rather pull or spaghetti the backline instead of using Chaotic Offering and stab gives him something quick and easy to do in the later turns while hitting front ranks. It works in position 3 so if you don't have someone like Surgeon PD that also wants it there's no issue.

      His pull can also be very good vs evangelists/tangle footsoldiers, when you pull a backrank enemy and the turn order lines up, both evangelists keep using the move to get out of rank 3 and just constantly use the weak movement move. The same can happen with foot soldiers although that is rank 4. I find a lot more movement skills are more viable in dd2 than 1, not that they are incredibly optimal at all, but they can sometimes be all right. Pulling gun brigands is usually also decent, although when you get a spawn where there are 2 guns in the back it doesn't mean much.

    Seeing Sphere on a Ritualist Occultist genuinely won me my Act 5 run, he just consistently got enough Unchecked Power to through out Burning Stars almost every turn, and in between I could just get the buffs from my curses to make Burning Stars hit even harder.

    It's a shame Antiquarian defected to the dark side. Occultist really looked good with her, I shipped them(visually, not gameplay wise, although somebody defeated the siren using just these two)

    Pairing Aspirant with Orphan Runaway is pretty fun, though the path is really only good for Denial since it's the only one with a 4-enemy confession boss.

    My favourite occultist combination with ravager hellion. Occ Demon pull + hel smash does ridiculous damage to backliners and also pulls them to forward ranks where they usually can't do shit 😂

    Runaway works well with Occultist. Her cauterize can recover from a bad Wyrd reconstruction, she's often on fire, so Scalded skull becomes far better too. Malediction often adds fire damage which makes Backdraft more powerful. Runaway can use Firestarter on Occultist, then he can hit the every rank with Anamnesis. Runaway also pumps out a lot of combo tokens, which helps Occultist generate unchecked power with Binding Shadows and Sacrificial stab

    An immediate buff to his token consuming skills like malediction and anamnesis is to make them cost 1 token so you can turn 1 get token turn 2 use. burning stars is good at 2. also they changed how the tracking shot prevents dodge to rounds not turns so i'm assuming all other similar skills will get the same treatment.
    This will allow setups like turn 1 chaotic offering and turn 2-3 malediction or anamnesis or consume token turn 1 and use turn 2.

    Occultism and plague doctor synergize so well for back line nuking. Not to mention plague grenade with abyssal artillery make easy work of the tangle boss.

    For me aspirant is the go to, killing a marked ennemy with the knife gets you two unchecked powers at once, and the path make it easier and just generally deal reliable damage with the move. I get to avoid the self damage that way. Safe and easy star spam.

    Pull is great, if the rank 4 enemy hides behind corpses and the move gets resisted, it doesn't matter because it gets pulled to the front anyway.

      @@ExtremeMan10 iirc unchecked is weird in that unlike Runaway/Hellion's paths the dot it applies ignores burn resist. It just happens if you roll the 33-100% chance depending on stacks.
      Making UP consistent with other self inflicted dots would be a *very* nice buff to OCC esp Warlock which has UP the most and the least hp.

    I would like it if you gain unchecked power with Occultist like Vestal with her conviction tokens. Gain every turn baseline, get it in unique ways with his paths, then change Chaotic offering to do something else. Makes him more effective in battle, and doesn't just devolve into hitting chaotic, burning stars, third move repeat

    I had a Warlock Occultist pop the hell off with that Dreaming General trophy that converts Weak into Strength and Vuln into Block, or something, as well as the Mortal Ward (Crit token and Dodge+ on Death's Door). I would honestly recommend either of those since I find that Warlock Occultist is a very very fragile character and is going to hit Death's Door very often, and both those trinkets turn the downside of Occultist getting focused into Death's Door into these hilarious comeback slugfests.
    In general, this is how it mostly went every single fight:
    *Occultist getting double-tapped to Death's Door:* "Call an ambulance, call an ambulance!"
    *Burning Stars crit for like 50+:* "BUT NOT FOR ME!"
    It did not help that this Occultist I think was either Bloodthirsty or Vicious - this guy probably singlehandedly carried my first Act 5 win, basically from Death's Door. Make sure you have PD so that he doesn't die to DoTs.

    Wyrd Reconstruction having a bleed of 3 (or a bleed of 2 upgraded) over 3 rounds sound insane! Especially cause in the first game, it started off having a 1 bleed for 3 turns. It would go up to 3 bleed and an 85% instead of 60% chance when fully upgraded, but because the healing output would get much higher, it was less risky the higher level it was.
    With the other characters, the devs have often just made the skills in the second game be very similar to the first game (e.g. Hellion's Yawwp giving her winded, even tho its a much weaker skill than in DD1), but for some reason, in this instance they did the opposite. Instead of the heal giving a low bleed at lower level, and then a high bleed at higher level, it is the other way around.
    And the limitation of a healing threshold really baffles me. I feel like the skill is so high risk, it does not need a threshold. You are always throwing the dice when using it, so you can't just easily spam it for recovery like you would other heals. Even if you used it right before a battle ends, you could still roll a 0.
    The healing threshold being this low too (33 percent!) also makes me wonder... Do they not know that this skill is too volatile to use at such low health? Why can Plague Doctor just heal with indiscriminate science at 50 percent, but Occultist can't? Or did they do this deliberately, so you are forced to have this nail-biting moment of "will this save me or will this kill me"?
    I know that they recently gave him the 50 percent threshold, but I am really curious why they didn't do that from the get-go and even needed the community to ask for it so often before they changed it.
    I really wish I was in the same room while they discussed how they would implement this skill for DD2. There are a lot of open questions about the decisions being made here, and whether they were deliberate or out of a lack of understanding how players use the skill.

      Crit doesn't necessarily mean anything more than that the 2 on the screen will be bold. If anything, knowing that you can create crit heals for OCC is an intellect hazard, because it makes you want to try using Wyrd.

      You can say that with any character though. Occultist has a few more hoops to jump through to make him reliable compared to others like MAA or Jester.

      @@personno.6.9billionth70 from what I've seen, I believe it is either a skill issue on the player's part when they can't make him work, or the game doesn't give them good enough material to make the build work in the first place.

    I think I would use him as a purely support character with ritualist. Cursing enemies, healing with the most inconsistent heal in the game (only if It’s absolutely necessary) and combo. That’s it since this will be my least favorite character in the game. He is in serious need of some buffs to his skills and paths.

      Warlock has his uses, Abyssal is consistent as a backline nuke and Star's trivialises some encounters/enemies like Implication/Altar.

      Imo a good buff is to remove its "Must be at low hp to use" at 1 unchecked power.
      Lets you use it proactively (like in DD1) and discharge stray tokens you might get but can't otherwise commit to use.

    Can occultist resist his own burns? I got a run where he had 106 burn resist at one point but I was barely generating unchecked power. Since I only had like 1 for half of the entire fight I don’t know if it wasn’t procing or I resisted it.

    Malediction really needs some help, the only use I found for it was for Ambition's boss, and it actually worked but geez I hope they do something about it
    Also I feel like people are really sleeping on Binding Shadows. My strategy for it is to combo it with Jester (or basically any combo move you do you) and general trophy. That way you basically don't need offering because you can stack up his tokens in one turn if you're lucky

    I have used occultist like alot and malediction Is good, but only in 2/4 region bosses and 3/5 act bosses. Even at it's best when ur warlock and u cast it 3 times in a row with crit tokens and skull trinket, you actually end up doing too much damage, to the point were you could have just did stars and beat the boss anyway. Out side of that its omega troll it just is a super slow control burn that's less consistent.
    Also you brushed off warlock I use to think it was weak but it's wanderer+ less HP for power gen is always worth and being able to chain cast spells can lead to insane moments were you cast a big spell multiple times.

    Runaway could be a good teammate. If you use Wyrd and it causes bleed, Runaway can use Cauterize. Bleed gone and no threshold on Cauterize healing.

    Occultist heal is one of the worst spells in the game, one of the big reasons being that you need healing most when a character is at Death's Door, and often times Wyrd just fucking kills them lmao.
    Also it can eat your crit tokens/unchecked power to crit heal for 2, which is just awful.
    Only use I've found for it is enabling Carved Bodkin.

    I spent a while trying to figure out a way to balance damage with survivability for the Occultist. I think Ritualist is fairly useless, because the game punishes support only roles and the path is extremely trinket reliant to reach averageness. Warlock is only viable with Radiant Flames, because having -40% health (20% for the path, 20% for Stygian) with Stygian Flame means he'll die from his own UP dot. The 33% chance to get UP is too uncommon to rely on it and is almost always wasted, because even if you get it on the first turn it's still better to cast Chaotic Offering then roll the dice next round.
    Aspirant was the only path I found that could provide damage and survivability even with Stygian Flame. The way I found to play Occultist is to put him in rank 3 and his main rotation is to use Chaotic Offering followed by Burning Stars. Always keep Daemon's Pull for combo utility, corpse clear, and forcing backrow mobs to use less damaging abilities in the front. Always keep Sacrificial Stab for rank 1/2 damage as well as finishing off enemies. The last spell is situational. Finally never use Malediction, because Burning Stars will always be infinitely better. Get Snappy Swig ASAP along with either Stimulating Poultice or a speed trinket. Stimulating Poultice is preferable since you'll want Enlightening Element to give him survivability. The comp I found to work well is a named comp "Biology Assignment" which is PD/Occ/Flag/Leper.

    In DD1, whenever you crit, the skill/attack high rolls plus and the crit multiplier. Occultist doesnt do that. The crit multiplier is tacked onto whatever funny roll you get. I think it's the same deal in DD1.
    But yeah, a crit wyrd reconstruction is a waste of 2 power tokens because you could crit a 2 heal for 3.
    Also malediction really needs to have res piercing, at least when upgraded. It should last 3 rounds rather than 3 turns.

    Occultist heal needs a few minor tweaks . . . one of them being the heal range. There are other heals without the conditional 33% hp, his specifically should have it bumped up to 40 and 50% respectively, with the bleed reduced to 2 and 1 a turn. Healing 9 - 12 as stated in the video but getting a 5 to 9 heal is still worth it if you can heal earlier than other characters.
    Why use occultist over a debuff path Vestal? Combo, and Stars, basically a damage sink. The pull is amazing, but Vestal can give similar debuffs for free and her consecration skills have so much worth with NO negatives. Super High risk and very low payout for everything but Stars while needing to manage his token economy.

    I see two ways to better Wyrd.R. Just for fun and potential.
    1: Target heal 5-33% 2 bleed 50%
    UPG: target heal 10-44% 1 bleed 50%
    OR
    2: Target heal 11-33% 3 bleed 50%
    UPG: target heal 22-44% 2 bleed 25%
    Grave Robber, Occultist, Runaway, Hellion, even Leper. ALL need slight buffs to all their skills and that they need NOT to rely on a few skills/ gimmicks/ items niche or not to be relevant. Heck take away Hellions regen capabilities and shes dusto useless!
    Rather buff the weaker classes up to the level of the stronger ones, fine tune, then if the game on any difficulty gets overall too easy... buff the enemies slightly but not so much that the buffed classes goes from good to bad.

    No other hero can do what Occ does, the Wackynes and Dice Rolling is what makes him fun, and i'm not alone when i say that Burning Stars looks sick, the man lit sends monsters back into oblivion with a meteor.

    What do you think about these buffs for the guy?
    1. He can use Wyrd without health restrictions, or on those below 50% hp.
    2. His curses deal 1 damage, like in Darkest Dungeon 1.
    3. Unchecked power doesn't burn him (priority for me).
    4. This other knife attack moves him back one spot (on Anamnesis path it moves forward).
    These are simple things, more complicated, but also important, would be changes to Anamnesis and Malediction, to make them able to compete against burning stars (I feel like even on the specific path Anamnesis isn't always better than burning stars and that is pretty dissapointing).
    Other option would be stars nerf and giving him easier way to gain unchecked power, also making him less reliable on offering, but now we are getting into rework rabbit hole.
    I like to play him, but maybe some die-hard mains have better ideas? Let me know

      An interesting idea for a buff that I've read somewhere is to make it so that he only needs one unchecked power for some of his lower powered charged moves, like the single target stun on daemon's pull. This would add an interesting dilemma "do i use my unchecked power now or do I save it for later so that I can do an even more powerful move (burning stars)"

      I think it would be interesting if Wyrd could overheal character (in another words your "reconstruction" can give your ally more hp than its max HP, seems fitting thematically).

      My big change would be to make the stabs give one unchecked power automatically, and then a second point if the target is marked/deathblow/whatever. Right now, the stabs are basically useless for building UP, because they're way too slow to build up by themselves, and they're redundant if you already have offering active. But if you could use a finisher after two regular hits or one hit with set-up, that makes it a reasonable alternative to Offering.
      I would also buff Reconstruction by making the un-upgraded version heal up to 40%. It's weird that it only does 33%, since that averages out to only 16.5%, but most other heals do at least 20% unupgraded.

    the curse version without burning stars is probably better. curses, stab and pull. heal being optional.
    If you are gonna go warlock, i wouldn't put him in rank 2.

    the occultist is the weakest character IMO. thats why he's so important to the roster, because only sometimes is he one of the best characters in the game. he's the true gambler's choice- the guy who sells his soul for power

    I just cannot get into this game. Yeah the combat is better but the entire dungeon run format is just not entertaining to me. Darkest dungeon was one of my most favorite games but after 1 1/2 years of this game, It just isn't the same at all.

      Because when they start talking about math it narrows their perspective and they lose sight of context. That's how comments like "X is just a better Y" for heroes come about. In DD1 people said take Hellion because she's better Leper, when the 2 have different roles.

    I have a serious question, has anyone used Abyssal Artillery to stun the backline? A chance to stun vs a guaranteed kill with burning star, besides, by the time when 2 unchecked is gained, one of the backline is already dead.
