  • This video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the carburetor on Briggs and Stratton small engines, commonly found in lawn mowers, riding tractors, zero-turn radius mowers, wheeled edgers, pressure washers, and generators. The most common reason for replacing the carburetor is if the engine is hard to start, leaks gas, runs poorly, won’t start or stay running.

    I understood the title perfectly! Since I have a front, back and side yard to mow, I have been using the engineered , 4 cycle gas from Walmart or Home Depot, more expensive for sure, but my mower does start every time and even after harsh, upper midwest winters. Thanks for the video!

    A video by someone who sells carburetors. The real problem 90% of the time is a clogged fuel jet which is in the half-inch nut on the bottom of the fuel bowl (or just water in the bowl itself, both of which can be easily fixed by removing nothing but that nut and fuel bowl assembly, which can be reached from the front without removing anything else. Sad part is that the entire issue could've been prevented by the use of an in-line fuel filter which they didn't build in.

      Who know? So much cheap junk coming out of China but I bought a brand new carb on Amazon for $29.00. I still have to spray starter fluid almost every time to get it started : ( but with the new carb, it STAYS running. The old one just kept quitting. So frustrating! I don't think I will buy a #Toro again.

    Had the exact mower in the video. Ran perfectly for the first 10 years, I only watched the video to replace the carb. However, after replacing the carb I saw that the paper gasket was a bit worn and the o-ring had a crack. Maybe all it really needed was to replace those two items. 10 years from now maybe I'll do just that.

    What if it's a problem with the air-feed in the top of the fuel cap? You've not even mentioned diagnosis - but just dived in, replacing components willy-nilly. If the B&S does not start at all I'd first go for the spark plug. Did you?

    I replaced carb and started mower it ran rough and eventually died. I figured the choke wasn't opening up as it was spewing black smoke. When I pulled it apart I found that I had managed to jam the air vane/choke lever so that it wouldn't operate. I removed the screw holding the air vane /choke lever in place and managed to set it up so the choke operated freely. I put it back together and now it won't start at all. Any ideas?

    it is cheaper now a days with time and parts, to just replace parts though, deal with that alot in the marine industry, we used to disassemble and clean switches and solenoids and other electrical parts, now they get replaced, for dependability and longevity, also parts arent made here, theyre made overseas... CHEAP, so they can be replaced cheaper than repairing

    use premium fuel in small engine , for some reason it works better and does not gum up in a carburetor after long storage ,
    second if you have a fuel valve turn it off while the engine is running and wait until the fuel dries out from the carburetor ,
    Fuel left in the carburetor for a long time will dry up and damage the carburetor , installing a fuel shut off valve is easy ,
    If engine is hard to start remove the spark plug and use a propane torch burn off the Corbin residue and whatever might be on the spark plug , I do it until the Central Electric and the ground electroid get red hot , of course wait until the spark plug cool down before reinstalling it , in the Old Country Palestine we used to put a small amount of gasoline on the ground put the spark plug in the middle of it and set it on fire , that always worked to get us out of a jam ,

      @sskyking1 7 лет назад +2

      Reality is this is a design issue (lack of fuel filter). I use regular gas station gas on all of my other small engines and have for decades without ever experiencing this issue before. Mower manufacturers are trying to push people toward their high-priced special fuels by designing their engines to be more picky than ever before. First mower I've ever had that didn't have a fuel filter and I will never buy another without making sure it has one.

      Nidal Shehadeh
      I moved from Seattle WA to South Florida , as if was moving to a different planet , high humidity and Heat messes up just about anything and everything , batteries up north will last about five years down here 1 1/2 to 3 years , in my 2000 Grand Cherokee battery lasted about 2 years 3 months , the same thing with small engines , in the summer heat fuel in the carburetor dry up and gum up your carburetor overnight , A fuel filter is immensely important in any setup what is more important is a fuel shut off valve , before storing youre small engine turn off the fuel shut off valve and wait until the engine dies, in other words drain the fuel out of the carburetor this way you won't have any carburetor issues or should I say It reduces chances that you would have any carburetor problems

    • @Sharkracer01
      @Sharkracer01 7 лет назад +1

      Or you can just buy the filter next to the mowers at Home Depot for $5 and install in 5 minutes. Cut the fuel line and squeeze it on. Done.

    • @nidalshehahadeh7485
      @nidalshehahadeh7485 7 лет назад +2

      excellent idea , down here in South Florida we have what we call snowbirds , population swells up by 60% , people coming from up North running away from the cold and in the summer they all go up North so you have about six month of equipment setting idle in the garage somewhere , that's where the fuel valve comes in .

    Really stuck here. Had the exact same issue as everyone else...would start from primer and then stop. Totally removed carb. Cleaned with carb cleaner and pipe cleaners to clean all ports and tubes. made sure too get holes in bowl plug. Changed out gas, and used rebuild kit and replaced gaskets and needle. mower started and ran great last night. when it got dark put it away and now doing exactly same thing today when tried to finish yard. Took back apart looking for any clogs or dirt, nothing... any ideas on what could still be the problem?

    Thanks for the clear instructions. Most of us in New Zealand want to just clean out the dirt that is blocking our jets in the carb, rather than replace the whole thing, must be our pioneer roots... Are you able to give some instructions for this please? I am having problems with a similar (older but similar model 129802) Quantum engine that starts and runs at good revs for a few seconds but cuts out suddenly as if the fuel flow (or spark) has stopped. I've dismantled and cleaned the carb, and noticed what looks like a welsh plug in it, (possibly covering up a couple of fine jets?) I've checked the tank is venting OK as well. There are 2 holes in the centre of the carb above the bottom nut / jet, one of these goes to the brass tube in the venturii air flow, where does the other one go? Thanks for any help.

    • @repairclinic
      @repairclinic  8 лет назад

      +reelMn In the U.S we have ethanol in our gasoline and if that fuel is not treated properly it can clog a carburetor beyond cleaning at times. If so, the whole carburetor has to be replaced. If New Zealand has similar fuel issues, cleaning may not cut it.

    My issue.
    Full gas, good on oil.
    It starts, but won't stay on after Choke. it also dies sometimes after a while even on choke.
    When we first took it out today, it would not turn off. We have to WD40 the wires and it works now for stopping. Maybe the issue is something wrong with the wires. (I don't know what the metal cords are called)

    • @repairclinic

      Bill Taylor Most problems with engines not running properly are carburetor related. Maintenance items like oil, air filter, and spark plug could cause it too if they are not replaced regularly.

      Usually carb. If you hit something hard a sheered flywheel key can cause start stall situation but that usually damages the blade. Sheered key often causes the recoil to snap back hard when you pull it.

    How much play should be in the choke lever assembly while carburetor is off.......I have mine off waiting on new one to come in but I feel worried about that choke lever assembly it is really loose.....is that a problem or is that normal?

    • @repairclinic
      @repairclinic  10 лет назад

      It all depends on what type of choke you have. If you have a manual choke you should be able to pull a lever and keep the choke closed and open it when the engine starts. Some have an auto choke that will automatically close the choke when the engine is cold. As long as the choke is not staying on when the engine warms up it shouldn't cause a problem.

      Actually, this video is intended to get you to replace a carburetor that you likely don't need to! Far more likely it's just a clogged fuel inlet and that's an easy fix, and one that a fuel filter (which these don't have) would've prevented!

    I have a brand new Stow & Mow and the engine doesn't seem to be running well. It takes a while to get up to full running speed and dies quickly when going through thick grass. I have to lift up the back of it from the handle and it gets running quickly again, but doesn't last long. It also smells likes its running rich. Strong fuel smell. Cleaned the air filter and carb... both looked fine. What could be my problem?

    • @repairclinic
      @repairclinic  9 лет назад

      We Bring the Party, LLC We would start by analyzing the fuel you are using? Newer engines are really sensitive to gasoline that contains ethanol and the problem is compounded if stored longer than six months. Cleaning a carburetor does not always get all all the sludge out and replacement may be needed.

    i do small engine repair, their is no reason to buy a new carb. 90% of small engine problems is a fuel issue, clean the jet ports out and it will run! AND dont leave it in the rain, the gas cap has vents in it, water will get in your fuel

    • @danbasta3677
      @danbasta3677 5 лет назад

      Agree with your written statement. You also sometimes run into gasoline that you buy that already has water in it. Both my Power King tractors are not running right, both have Kohler engines in them, and they both arn't running or stall out when you increase the throttle. I believe it's because of water or moisture in the gas. Have to drain out the gas and put in fresh gas. The one could use a tune up with new points and condenser, while at it, new plug as well with the proper gap on the plug.

    hi,
    Would apprec some help and advice. Used you video and all seemed well. Mower worked for one long cut with multiple starts. Week later started for couple of second and I turned it off to adjust height setting and now it will not start no mater what (fuel and oil levels ok). Have checked and spark plug OK (using multimetre) and there is current from the magneto (used tester that lights up). Motor does not even seem to turn over. Just pull cord and magnet etc works but no ignition. Tried with out filter, tried to spray some carb cleaner into carb in case it is not priming (has auto choke and primer). Fuel is held in can so no chance of water in fuel etc. Auto choke arm sitting OK and moving correctly. I am now stuck. Any ideas.

      Probably build up inside your carb, due to ethanol in gas. Watch a youtube video, I like the one from Jeff's little engine service "New Toro lawnmower won't start"...with zero experience, it should take about 6 hours to fix it! If your mower wasn't left in the weather, it's probably not your fuel filter. ( in tank)

    Stop using a brand new, never-before-used lawn mower as your example.

    I have tried everything. I changed the oil. spark plug, took the cup under the carburetor and cleaned it. It still won't stay running.

      Steve Walther - A lot of Craftsman mowers use a Briggs amd Stratton motor, so probably.

    since we're just replacing things rather than fixing them, why not save all the troubles and just buy a new mower?? better still send someone else out to buy it for you and have them mow the lawn...

      i paid 279.00 for my lawn mower 5 years ago and new carburetor cost under 19 dollars. in other words its cheaper to replace the carburetor vs buying another mower

      OR, after spending 3 days watching numerous RUclips videos, doing everything they say INCLUDING cleaning the float bowl and jet in the bottom and STILL not having the mower work, rather than studying to become a small engine repair woman, I just went over to amazon, spent 15 dollars on a new carb, bolted it on per this video and NOW I'm about to go out any actually mow the grass/weeds.

    There was no need to replace the carb. just clean it and it should be fine unless you want to rebuild it. The gasket was ok, no need to replace that either. This is all wrong, do a little work for a change and stop screwing the customers for new parts when they don't need them.

    • @badbackshop
      @badbackshop 7 лет назад

      Meh...I grabbed one off of Ebay for 12 bucks shipped. Just bolt it on and no fuss. Cleaning / rebuilding takes time and materials - heck a rebuild kit costs almost as much as the new carb! As a practice I change mine out every 3 years and my mower will probably outlast me.

    • @paulbrown8370

      If I have a problem, I clean the carb and it is usually fine after that, never had a come back for anything, it has been 20 years now.

    This video explains absolutely nothing on WHY it wouldn't stay running. Sure replacing the carb, is one way, but, why not explain why it wouldn't run ;then go from there.

    Is you're brand new, never used mower not running? Take out the very clean never used bolts that will come off with no effort...or be in the real world where those bolts are a bitch... After that clean you're float bowl and jet. And if you're really lucky you'll have to rip half the engine apart to get to one bolt XD

    This is a stupid video for sure. so the lawn mower won't stay running. I have a Ford truck that won't stay running. Dare I begin to yank the motor, or should I just find out what's wrong with it? Take this video one step further. It won't stay running, so go out and buy a Honda lawn mower instead. that will fix the mower for sure.
