    I'm glad so many people are having success by using this method!! For the few people who haven't had luck with this, check out my newer video for the same type of engine. I'll teach you how to clean the plastic carburetor and show you where it's likely to be clogged at. Keep commenting, I love hearing about your success. Great advice! It worked for me. Mower sat all winter with gas in the tank because I'm an idiot. It wouldn't even turn over when pulling the cord.... NOTE: It took about 10 minutes of spray, try it, spray, try it - alternating between carb cleaner and starter fluid. On multiple attempts it would run for a few seconds then sputter and stop. My wife was sure I didn't know what the heck I was doing and as each minute passed, I grew increasingly worried she'd was right. Then it caught and I strutted around the lawn - with the mower.

      "Mower sat all winter with gas in the tank because I'm an idiot." - I think that's why most of us are here lol. I initially thought it was the spark plug, and my wife was watching me while I replaced it and started losing confidence in my abilities when it didn't work. This time I am going to wait until she's out of the house to fix it first, then I'll set it up and get her to watch as I miraculously repair it. Husbanding is a fine art!

    Awesome video....about a month ago I took my lawn mower into our local repair shop because it wouldn’t start. When I first got it back it started fine but it got tougher to start every time until the point I could not get it to start at all. I wasn’t going to take it back to the shop for another $80 so I searched out RUclips and found your video. I replaced the black oil, and gave it an air filter and it worked fine until this winter after a month or so. Finally put a new spark plug and WD everything as i also sharpened the blade but it start and stalled like your video. • @doughaber3330
    @doughaber3330 3 года назад +3

    Glad your method worked. This is good for people that don't want to take apart everything. My method would have consisted of checking the fuel, air filter, spark and then pulling the carburator off and cleaning it. I'm surprised you were able to pull this off, but I bet the problem comes back. Something is dirty in the fuel system and needs to be completely referbished though cleaning and or part replacement. If I don't get it to start in 3 or 4 pulls, inspection and removal of parts will happen so I can save my shoulder. LOL! Glad you got it working!

      Yea I fix and sell mowers and riding mowers but usually when I get them, they are so badly abused and dirty, that I just get straight into cleaning the carb or even replace the carb and after that they usually start pretty quickly and run fairly good. Most of the time it is the carb that is very dirty but there is usually nothing wrong with the spark. 1 out of 15 mowers have something more complicated wrong with them, (I can fix but just takes more time) like valve adjustment, flywheel key, etc.

    • @TractorHoarders

      It is most likely that your carburetor has a clogged passage. I have other small engine repair videos on my channel that you can check out, and within a week or so, I plan to upload a newer video on carburetor cleaning. 85% of the time, using a combination of starting fluid and carburetor cleaning works for me, but sometimes you have to disassemble the carburetor and clean the passages a little more thoroughly.

    A suggestion I would add when disconnecting the fuel line is to insert a 1/4” hex nut driver bit (with round shank) into line. Prevents fuel spillage and leaves both hands free. I also use a spring clamp on start/run handle when spraying into carb. My arms are short!

    A couple of questions. I’ve been using the expensive ethanol free fuel in my plastic carb B&S 625 Ex lawnmower engine. Should I just use fresh E10 pump gas? Also, another video showed that charcoal comes out of the EPA gas cap and through the fuel system. Will carb cleaner break it up in the jets? I don’t want to disassemble the carb and poke the jets as I did a few years ago.

    • @TractorHoarders
      @TractorHoarders  3 года назад +1

      Hello! I think you’re definitely putting in positive effort either the ethanol free fuel; however, since you’re still having issues even with that, I’d discontinue it and use fresh E10 as you mentioned. I think the thing of highest value you can do is run the engine frequently, and don’t let gas sit in it during the off-season. At the end of your mowing season, run the engine until it shuts off from running out of gas.
      I am uncertain on the charcoal in the gas cap as I have never looked at that and didn’t know it to be a thing.
      Sometimes on these engines, cleaning the jets may be the only route to go. Good luck!

    • @TractorHoarders
      @TractorHoarders  3 года назад

      With no firing while using carb cleaner, I would recommend verifying that you have visible spark. With the spark plug not threaded into the engine head, touch it against the head with the wire connected. Pull the rope and watch closely at the spark plug. Do you see it spark? You could need a new coil, or your flywheel key could have sheered which would make the timing off. Just some ideas! Good luck!

    You can use brake cleaner in place of carb cleaner and starting fluid if you want to. You can also spray cleaner into the carb through the fuel line to try to dissolve the goo in the fuel bowl. / If the mower will start when you spray into the carb, you know it's a fuel delivery issue and there's no reason to take out the plug. / A flooded mower will start with a few pulls unless you've drowned it. Most mowers today run really lean so they burn off excess fuel pretty quickly.

You may be right though that you may need to clean the carburetor. Sometimes it is unavoidable. The good news though is that it's not all that bad. Wear gloves, take it apart on a clean surface. I like to sit the pieces on paper towels because it makes it easy to see everything on the white background. You can take it apart with basic tools, and just clean all the passages out. Sometimes when you open it up, it will be obviously dirty or have water, ethanol, or green stuff in it. Take your time and just pay attention to what parts went where. You can do it!

    I was at first watching thinking you'll be emptying both spray cans for nothing and needing to disassemble the carb.... well done on getting it going again..

      I am surprised at the amount of times that I can get an engine running again with this method versus doing a full carburetor cleaning. I do the real deal when needed, but if I can do this and never take anything apart, I tend to try it first. Thank you!

    First of all thanks for the educating aspect of this. I'm a 50 yo man who isn't exactly the handiest guy. But your videos have helped me start my mower and get her running. I needed a new spark plugs after 15 years! And I changed the plug myself! Feels good.....quick question do you think it's a good idea as a preventative maintenance to spray carb cleaner with engine running every few months to keep it clean? Or is that overkill. Tks again!

      Spraying the carb cleaner as preventative maintenance is likely not needed. I tell people to either run all of the gas out of it before you store it for the winter, or just simply start it and let it run for a little bit every 30-60 days. Repairs like this one that I perform, I have never had to do on my own equipment by following that simple advice.

    Thanks for the great tips! Seemed like mine was clogged pretty bad and the carb cleaner worked like butter after few trials.

    I did your method before and it worked. Now it's back to not starting. Any suggestions ?
    I have a craftsman push mower that back fired then cord pulled half way and stopped working. I can't pull cord now or cord doesn't pull any more. Any suggestions?
