  • True reconciliation can only be achieved when it exists in the hearts and minds of every Canadian. Why that matters is related to Canada's heart-wrenching history of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Sophie Kiwala was the former MPP for Kingston and the Islands where she served as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, Children and Youth, and Tourism Culture and Sport. She served on numerous committees while in office including General Government, Estimates, Ontario Legislative Assembly, and she was the Chair of the Cabinet Committee on Jobs and Economic Policy. She has a long history of service to Kingstonians through her work in federal politics as well where she was the Office Manager to the Speaker of the House of Commons, Honourable Peter Milliken, and the Chief of Staff to Hon. Milliken's successor, MP Ted Hsu. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Honesltly my gramma once told me a story about her neighbors in the kootney region BC where she grew up. Apparently they were indigenous and the mother actually used to have to hide her children in the bushes so the residential school church officials couldn't take her children....

Why couldn't indigenous children go to ordinary schools and have classes in their language and culture after classes in the main subjects? Non-native children could join and study something really interesting, too. May be I don't understand 'cause I live in a country where local languages are being taught at schools for more than 90 years, and TV is in 52 of indigenous languages.

Your granny lied to you to pass on the unwarranted victim mentality that runs rampant amongst natives..native woman are forced into prostitution as a result of addiction from the trauma they suffered at the hands of their families and people..MMIWs are the fault of natives.

Time to abolish the Indian Act and let the Indigenous peoples govern themselves. Time for the police to investigate all those unsolved cases of MMIWG. Let them live in peace and away from the confines of the federal government. For they have done enough harm and damage.

Women and girls should be treated diffrently than men and boys because they have diffrent anatomy and needs. Treating everybody equally is forgetting about individuality.

I appreciate her sharing these facts, however I think you all already know this, for what its worth I think the answers can be found in your own families and communities. The authorities need to take this more seriously...I am a part indiginous woman here in the US, there is very much complacancy here about indiginous peoples and especially women, there is alot of work to do...🙋‍♀️🤗

My 2 children have their status (through their dad not me) and these types of talks make my blood boil. It is the responsibility of the parents to keep their children safe. It isn't your responsibility to raise my kids and it isn't mine to raise yours. If your children keep going missing ask yourself what you got wrong and nobody else.

What she's leaving out is that at least half those missing and murdered native women are murdered or maltreatment by other aboriginal people. Look at the federal crime statistics if you don't believe me.

Statistics Canada: "Court Outcomes in Homicides of Indigenous Women & Girls/2009-2021.":
81% of indigenous women & girls killed in Canada knew their killers (intimate partner/acquaintance/family member) and in 86% of those cases, the person accused of their homicide was also indigenous.
In fact, overall stranger homicides were LESS common among indigenous victims (8%) verses non-indigenous victims (12%) of women & girls who were killed.
