    I don't think people are ashamed of liking metal. I think they are just scared of what people will think of them (this is very common in teenagers).

      Soul Crusher pretty much. I was taught how bad metal was supposed to be by people and parents and shit. So when I LOVED metallica I was super confused and I even became an apologetic that metallica is a hard rock band and I had all these stupid arguments and everything(sth like christian apologetics do lol). Then I just explored further and learned more and ooened my mind and BAM I listen to ober 150 bands now of pretty much all metal genres except for core(to me its pop with heavy guitars and blast beats lol)

      As a little girl back in the 2010s 6 year old me rlly loved Ozzy Osbourne and tried to talk to my classmates about him, they just ignored me so i felt ashamed liking him so i tried to talk to them about some rock music like, aerosmith, kiss and even john lennon they ignored me. So i just kept them to myself and tried to fit in with my school by listening to pop music, of course it didn't work out and i would always shout 'ITS NOT OZZZZZZZZYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!' Im in high school now and i made a bunch of friends just by saying 'i love black sabbath' and boom now i have a lot of friends and we talk about rock and metal 24/7.

    I'm still new to Heavy Metal and it took me a while to be comfortable enough to play Heavy Metal in my car loud. I would get nervous at stop lights while playing Heavy Metal. Seeing people next to me rolling up their windows or just turning to stare at me made me would give me a mini anxiety. ha ha. But now having listened to metal for almost 2 years I am way more relaxed about it and don't worry about people judging me or not. It is the best music to drive too, to work out to and to play when I am feeling down. It has helped with my confidence so I am thankful. Thanks.

    Loving metal was definitely a huge reason I got bullied at school. The girls couldn't understand why I wore black tshirts and combats and would often shout out in class that I must be a lesbian/actually a boy. The opinion by many (including adults) was that I had brought that on myself by openly liking metal.

  • @slitfit
    @slitfit 6 лет назад +32

    This reminds me of a student in my class who told me he is a massive fan of Metallica, believes that Metallica is the most brutal band ever, and that his #1 song is "One" because he likes the beginning of the song.
    Now, I thought that because he was new to metal, that I recommend them good bands such as Sodom, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, and Hell! Even Korn.
    His reaction was, and I quote "Ew, Cannibal Corpse is too disgusting even though I've never heard of them before. Slayer and Sodom aren't that good, and Anthrax sucks. Korn is a band who are Pussys and posers to Nu Metal."
    I forgot to mention, he also wouldn't shut up about how original Avenged Sevenfold is and all the work they put into their band is crazy.

    The thing is that people think that heavy metal is just death metal/black metal/grindcore etc. They don´t know that inside metal you have a lot of different subgenres with a huge variety of sounds. They believe that every metal song sounds like an extreme metal song and that below that extreme level, it comes directly hard rock. So yes, they believe that heavy, power, glam... aren´t metal, so they are rock.

    • @kaiser7695
      @kaiser7695 4 года назад +2

    I'm very proud of liking metal now. I used to not like saying I was because I was already the outcast and bullied a bit like being called a school shooter. My friend eventually went hardcore into the punk and black metal scene and that's when I started to hear about what people would say behind his back. Now he was very weird about it he always carried a satanist bible and listened to his music out loud. He defiantly have the bullies a lot more fuel on his own. This kinda turned me off from wanting to share my love of metal with anyone but my close friends. I eventually started wearing more and more band tees and everyone kinda just saw me as a rocker and the only really metal thing I wore besides tees is a denim jacket. I'm now much more open about my love for the scene and even made a battle jacket recently, you're Halloween patch is on it I'll send it your way on Instagram when I put the final studs and stuff on it. I do that, too. Mostly because I just don't want to explain to people what [insert metal subgenre here] is. I usually say "I mostly listen to Rock and Metal." Of course, when I'm around other metalheads, I'll name genres and bands, but I think most "normal" people are contempt with knowing that spectrum of "Rock and Metal". They probably don't know and/or care for all those weird subgenres.

      Technically you're not lying because Thrash, Black, and Death metal are all sub genres of Heavy Metal, and heavy Metal is a sub genre of Rock and Roll. I usually just say "metal" because it encompasses all genres of metal. Metal is just a short term for Heavy Metal.

    • @justin2597
      @justin2597 6 лет назад +2

      I usually say the same thing, but for different reasons. I find it: A. Annoying to explain exactly what I'm referring to. B. Using "too specific" genre tags is cringy (unless of course you're recommending a band to a fellow metalhead and trying to explain what they sound like)

    • @joanthemad5894

      When people ask me I say I like everything because I don't want to come off as a special snowflake if I say metal, and if in fact I do say metal, I have to be specific because most people I encounter that do like metal like deathcore and I don't like deathcore but if I say "I don't like deathcore" I get called elitist. I don't judge or hate anyone for liking deathcore, it's just not my kind of music but people can't take opinions. Anyway, there are so many people in the metal community that just gloat how special they are for liking metal. I dont care if someone happily admits to liking metal it's when they think the world should revolve around them because they have "rare" taste in music like some snobby hipster. These people are my age, early 20s and some older, picking on emo teenagers and pre teens who like pop music. I told one of my forner friends once "How are you going to bully a kid with your grown ass?" lol. I just have birth to my first and hopefully last child about a month ago, if he gets into an emo phase let's say around 12 and some 32 year old man starts to assult my son over how he dresses, both my husband and I will punch that mans face inside out, I don't give a fuck.

    This is such an awesome video. I loved metal since I was thirteen (starting with Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Rammstein) but studies, work and other people's opinions made me a rather closeted metal fan. I was afraid people would act weird about it and I didn't have any friends who liked the same music or lifestyle. I few years ago I saw Rammstein and decided I didn't care so much anymore about what other people think. I love metal and that's that.

    Don't ever be ashamed of liking metal and being a metalhead. If no one likes it, than that's just too damn bad. I mean yeah, you're gonna get shit on, called names, and shit like that. But, you know, you just can't let it get to you. Hell, I'm almost 42 years old. And been listening to metal for as long as I can remember. And being from a small hick town. I've had my share of the name calling and the bullying, as well. But, like I said, "you just can't let it get to you".

    I think one of the reasons why this kid was ashamed of Metal, maybe because his parents didn't approve of it. And he had to call it something different to avoid his parents getting the wrong idea about him, or about the music. I had to go through something similar with my parents, but know I wear it with pride!! And my parents eventually learned that I can like metal, and they don't have to. And we can both still talk to each other. That's just my observation, but hey, who knows. Stay metal my friends!! :)

    I had a best friend who we were in a very large group of friends. of course I was the only metalhead.. can only imagine how sucky music was at those parties. anyway he showed interest in some of my music.. bought some albums but noticed he only played it when it was just him and I. after a few months.. there was no more metal coming from our friendship. I thoroughly believe it was influenced by the others we hung out with. mind you I'm 31 and this was all 11 years ago.. so I agree with this video.. it does seem like people who are branching out of the mainstream shit are ashamed to like our music. but you know what that's okay.. metal is for the devoted ones. 🤟🏻 we're doing a okay without them

Skater kids loved punk and hardcore stuff. I was a real nerdy kid and so were my friends but we listened to death metal and black metal. A bunch of soccer kids I was friends with listened to Avenged Sevenfold and other music like them. Literally everyone I grew up with listened to some form of that kind of music.

    I was ashamed to like metal up until a few years ago. My brother showed me some bands he liked when I was younger and I really enjoyed that, but I didn't want to admit I liked it. My parents always said that it was just noise and got angry when he played his music (which I now think is understandable since he did play it really loud and they don't like the music...)
    I also asked some of my friends what they thought about metal and they said it was horrible and too brutal and stupid (I don't think they really knew a lot of metal song though)
    I guess I was scared of people not liking me anymore and also of them thinking I wasn't a real girl...
    But now I don't give a shit about what people think and my friends grew up and I'm proud to say that I adore heavy metal ^^

    Bullying is good for society. I was bullied and it taught me to not take crap from people and to stand up for myself. I didn't just let it happen, I fought back against them and held my own, it made me stronger. I sat in at a Utah governor fund distribution meeting; they were allocating something like $50,000 state dollars to "ending bullying". You can't end it with money and commercials, the parents and teachers just need to know it's happening and handle it themselves. Teach your kids that as long as they don't throw the first punch they are in the right. As for your friend saying that music wasn't metal, maybe he just considers something metal if it has growling, guttural, or screaming vocals.

As my passion for metal grew I also grew out of that little embarrassment of listening to it. Now the whole school knows I LOVE, LIVE, and DIE for metal! I took photography class and I did my own metal twist to it and I even gave a whole class presentation on Heavy Metal and I love that the whole school knows me as the only metal enthusiast and I'm not ashamed !

He admited he likes hard rock, and one of bands he loved when he was young was Black Sabbath, but he's sure it's a hard rock band and he claims that he dislikes metal as a genre.
    And I want to introduce him to the world of metal, and show him one of growl-less Opeth songs (since we both like prog) but I'm ridiculously nervous what will he think of me and the music

This also kind of refrained me of exploring more of the genre. Now that I have graduated and going to college soon, I stopped giving a damn what people think of me. If someone has a problem with me loving metal, that's their own fault and not mine.

    An interesting note is that although Black Sabbath are often christened the "Godfathers of Heavy Metal", Ozzy himself feels that they're more of a 'Hard Rock's band.
    However, to him - Motörhead comes to mind whenever he hears the term "heavy metal" ^__^

    Metal and proud. Ignore the haters. Love the music and culture. Easier now I'm older. We don't get discriminated against as much as when at school. Bulling against people who are different to the norm (metal head (or greebo as is was in my day), goth etc) is prevalent which might be why some people hide the genres they like. I didn't and I took the comments etc on the chin. But everyone is different.

    I admit to liking metal and get really passionate about it to my friends and acquaintances (though most of them aren't metalheads). My reservation lies with calling myself a metalhead around other such people. Sometimes I just feel like I don't fit in because I don't look the part, which results in me feeling like the thing that doesn't belong in the room, or worse, like a poser. It feels like I've fallen between two stools.

    I had a similar thing but that happened with metal genres. I was saying many of the melodic or technical death metal bands I was listening to with different genre names. For example I was telling some of my favorite bands as:
    In Flames: Melodic Groove metal (despite they were melodeath in early albums)
    Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Katatonia, Tiamat : All those bands I was calling them doom metal even though they we're deathdoom at least in their early albums
    I was telling Amon Amarth was Viking Metal and Opeth and Cynic were prog metal .
    And every melodeath band( except in flames)I was telling it was power or Gothic metal with growls
    AND ALL THOSE THINGS TO HIDE THAT I LIKE MANY DEATH METAL BANDS .

I wouldn't tell them because I felt like I didnt fit in so well. All my friends would listen to rap, so I tried to listen to rap. But it just didn't click. Nowadays, I'm totally open about it, I wear band ts and I do listen to stuff other then metal. Overall, its what I prefer most. But thats just my point of view and experience.

    I love your bracelets!! Can you tell me where you bought them? I would love to buy them myself. I've had my own set of bracelets for a long time, but I'm looking for something new. Do you have any recommendations where to shop for these? I find it pretty hard to find descend studs bracelets like you're wearing, on the internet. Since many retailers don't sell (Or don't want to sell) longer studs. And/or longer bracelets. :/ I only found one site that sells these, (And has a huge assortment with lots of virility) called MetalDevastation.com. Unfortunately, this is a small American retailer, and thou to this the shipping costs really add up. The only place I can find these in stores, is on festivals. But there they end up pretty pricy as well. Do you happen to know any (Online) retailers that are decently priced? And it would really help out, if there located in Europe aswell. :)
