I'd say it started being commercialised and popularised in 1989, when record companies picked up all the death metal bands and released their records. Carcass, Pestilence, Bolt Thrower, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Autopsy, Atheist, 1989 was definitely the breakthrough year for the genre.
