    Buy the Tamron. It'll be the best $800 lens you've ever purchased. If you need to go wider than 28 mm get the Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM.

    it seems like every review of this lens. the reviewer doesn't know about it's weather sealing, I saw on a Tamron website that the lens has 6 weather seal gasket rings. 5 inside the Lens and one on the mount. so it's probably as weather sealed as any other lens that says it's weather sealed, because no lens is really weather sealed, they are all just weather resistant. as far as the image quality, it's amazing how close those two images looked without pixel peeping, it seems like the GM has a little more micro contrast that you can see in things like hair. but if you weren't pixel peeping the images side by side, you would just think the Tamron image is a really nice image. if both lenses were the same price, I think it would still be a toss up of which lens to get, because the advantage of the form factor is so huge for the Tamron, and the 550 g of weight compared to 890g. for me out weighs the 24 vs 28 downside. and the close focusing ads a dimension that the GM can't give you, but when you look at the reality of the actual price difference. you would almost feel stupid buying the GM. but with that said. if you want the 2% extra micro contrast, and the 24mm and the stronger build quality than buy the GM. but I have seen a few people who posted in facebook groups saying that after a little over a year. the focus ring on the 24/70 GM started to get out of shape and was coming off the lens. and it cost good money to fix it. I own the original Tamron 24/70 VC in a Canon mount. and I bought it when it first came out maybe 6 years ago, and Never had any issues of any kind. and I love the images I get with the lens. I just wish it was as small as this new Tamron 28/75 f2.8. also the Tamron in America has like a six year warranty if you register the lens after buying it. Personally I wish that Tamron made the lens to 100% equal or even better than the GM image quality. and just charged $1000 or even $1200 instead of $800. it still would have been allot less money than the GM. but as far as the plastic build goes. when I was new to photography, I used a Nikon 18/55 kit lens for like 5 years straight. I used that lens under every condition, including blowing sandy winds and rain, and even dropping the camera, and the lens never got broke or stopped working, and that is a kit lens with zero weather sealing. so I think the build quality aspect isn't as big as some people want to act like it is. and a good plastic can actually take more abuse than some metal can. if you think about it. plastic itself is weather resistant, where metal is not, anyway the Tamron is pretty sweet for it's price. and the GM is also nice but over priced. but all top glass is over priced. but if you want a BMW you can't buy it for Honda prices. even though the Honda might outlast the BMW.

    Sometimes I wish I had 24mm, but 28 mm range satisfies my needs most of the time. Having an extra 4mm doesn’t really justify the cost for me. Sometimes I do go “man, I wish I could go wider” but that doesn’t mean that the 28mm footage doesn’t look good. This lens is great and light and it would take a lot of justification for me to upgrade to the g master, and even then I wouldn’t bring the g master to travel

  • @GraphicMill
    @GraphicMill 6 лет назад +4

    Yes I would like 24mm, but, I love the fact that the Tamron is lighter, smaller and works great on my Crane Plus. I find traveling with it is beneficial, and using it on a gimbal totally out ways the extra 4mm of width. I have a 16-35 f4 that looks after those wider needs... it too works on the gimbal and when shooting at wide angles DOF is generally less of a visual goal. Yet I can achieve blur at 35mm when shooting close up on an object. Bottom line, the Tamron is a total win for me because I’m always traveling.

    I have the 24-105mm f4 and prefer the wider focal length range. F2.8 is nice, but I have gotten great coverage in most light with the f4. Not quite as much bokeh, but enough, especially at 105mm. Tamron has a great lens here, but I personally don't need it right now. Might get it in the future for a backup lens in my kit. Cheers and Thanks Jason for all your hard work (and fun).

    • @Sabenn
      @Sabenn 5 лет назад

      Im deciding between those two exact lenses. Im on a strict budget, but the build quality, OSS, and range is whats attracting me to the 24-105. - I have an A7i, so it doesnt have IBS, and I already have the 28-70 kit which...I dont like the variable aperture.

    • @timphillips3873
      @timphillips3873 5 лет назад

      I decided I could just shoot higher ISO to grab that extra stop of light, especially with the A7iii's capabilities The 105 is nice for portraits, even at F4- which is a bit more forgiving with DOF in my use. I pretty much live at either short or long end.

    I agree about the 28 not quite being wide enough. People forget that every mm counts as you get wider so 4mm is significant. Especially if I’m indoors where I can’t move back further at times. I’m thinking I’ll go for the 24-105 F4 cause I already have a set of primes.

    I was in Shanghai last month and came across the last one in a local mall. It was like a sign from the Tamaron gods saying, "I've been waiting for you". I haven't been this excited to get a new lens for a while. Talking to the store manager, he said they're back ordered until December 2018 in Shanghai so if it's in stock in your country, buy it! don't think, just buy it! You'll thank me and Jason later. Just my two cents, I agree with Jason with the 28mm not being wide enough. I'm 6'5 and even with Stretch Armstrong arms, I still manage to cut off my head in the frame when vlogging. Now, don't let that discourage you, vloggers, because when it comes to photos, and B-roll, this is the lens you want. I'll be sticking with this lens for a while as it provides the perfect focal length need and keeps me minimal As a back up I have my 16-35mm Zeiss F/4 for vlogging.

    I don't get the "need wide angle" in a zoom argument. You are using a zoom mostly for convenience while walking around so you can snap away with out having to reach in to your bag every second. A 28-70mm is a decent focal range. If you doing a wide shot then a prime lens should be used. Landscape shots usually take time and are done on a tripod. For me personally , I stick to one focal length at any given time. It forces me to think about my composition then just snapping away. Also, sticking to one focal length allows me to develop a unique style because I began to see the world through what ever focal length I am shooting at.

    • @chosenideahandle
      @chosenideahandle 6 лет назад

      If someone needs a wider shot with their zoom lens (for convenience of having a zoom lens), then you totally get the "need wide angle" argument. Why limit wide shots to prime lenses? My only prime left is a 16mm, but I'd love not having to carry it.

    Great job on the video. Super interesting seeing some your time in Cuba. I used to have a 28mm prime lens when using Nikon full-frame cameras. It was an odd focal length. Thanks for saying out loud about 28mm being not wide enough, Jason! When people say that it is, I'm pretty sure they haven't had enough experience shooting in tight places - not just in Cuba, but also in Hong Kong. This is particularly significant when you're traveling to foreign places, where ONE chance is all you're going to get to take that shot.

    You miss out the nearest focus distance!This alone is a good trade-off for the 4mm, not to mention the wider aperture and its low weight. You can have some nice shots with food, plants, small insects. This is a bonus for your trip. Whats more, if 28 mm is not wide enough, 24mm wouldnt do any better.

    Okay Jason I’m sold. I just got the 24-105 F4 but im returning because its too big on the gimbal. I can’t even go into flash light mode. So I’m getting the Tamron 28-75 and 28mm is wide enough for me probably because I come from the 18-105 which is basically 27mm and have been able to vlog with it. I don’t have giraffe long arms though but it definitely takes a toll on my arms when holding it as far as possible.

    I've been a HUGE fan of Tamron since I shot them on Canon. I'm on the fence about going back to this range though. I shoot the 24-105 and find myself staying somewhere around 80-100. That 2.8 is tempting though.

    4mm makes a difference, not huge, but in the urbex world, it does. When you are inside an abandoned power plant(building) sometimes you can take a step back. You might fall in a hole and die.

    Which would be the better combo ? -
    1- A7iii + 24-105 F4 + 55 1.8
    2- A7iii + Tamron 28-75 + 55 1.8
    3- A7iii + 55 1.8 + FE 85 1.8 + 28-75 kit lens
    Please suggest me the better one

    Jason Vong!!!! Thank you for pointing out and showing how getting close to the camera while shooting video can cause you to lose autofocus. This is something I haven't seen anyone cover and is the only issue I have with the lens. However I think it might actually have something to do with the way it couples with the a7iii. I tried the lens on a friends a6500 and think it actually did better on the close focus moving towards the camera. I'll have to test it again though to be sure. Anyways, Thanks for the great work!

    I picked the G Master 24-105 f4 over this tamron
    because of we used focal length 24 105 more than aperture 2.8 , and with 105 u can get nice background comparisons
    Still recommend getting a f1.8 lens for a real low light situations

    According to price this lens is so cheap that I would like to have it with Sony a6500. But having 28mm on wider side, I will definitely have to have a wider lens, Sony 16mm f2.8 or Sigma 16mm f1.4.
    But in case of shooting weddings or events, I will feel struggling bit due to not having Focal length fron 16mm to 28mm.
    But for Full frame bodies, you shouldn't have any problem in 24mm and 28mm.
    For ultra wide shots, get 16-35mm lens or 4mm focal length won't make that much difference

    I have the Tamron and absolutely love it but am also considering getting the 25mm Batis with the money I saved from getting the Tamron. Already own a 15mm Laowa Lens as well.

      Nicholas Ho Hey, may I know what is your reason of choosing 15mm laowa instead of 16-35mm f4 sony? Cause Im planning to buy a wide lense but still debating if I need that AF from 16-35 for property videos or documentation purposes..

    The extra 4mm doesn’t justify the cost of spending an additional $1,300 for the G-Master 24-70, IMO.

    Hey Jason, I have a question. Is the Tamron 28-75mm autofocusing issue affecting the SonyA7SII as well, or it's just about A7III? In that case, you advise me to update the firmware on the last version or no need?

    24mm vs 28mm.....at first I though I could live with 28mm. I used to have a FE28 F/2 as my wedding wide prime but I constantly finding the lens isn't wide enough especially during indoor reception. I sold it and got the sigma 24mm ART, I can tell you that 4mm makes a huge difference. Like Jason said, sometimes you just have no option to take that step back.
