  • The Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD is an affordable F2.8 standard zoom for full frame Sony E-mount cameras. It's one of the first third-party zooms designed to take full advantage of the short Sony mount, resulting in a small, light carry-everywhere lens. What are the trade-offs, compared with the alternatives? Chris and Jordan take a closer look...

    I've had this lens for around a year now. All praises for the lens, optically it's a marvel for a modern camera. The real big downside is that the lens is actually pretty slippery due to the glossy finish. However it is by any standard a must have and it is an amazing go to lens especially for an a7iii.

    The old 28-75 Tamron had a lock button on it to prevent creep . The close up capabilities are very nice with nice color rendition . The compromise that 28-75 poses is minimal and the lens poses as strong value especially when compared to the outrageously priced 24-70 G master .

      Use "Clear Image Zoom" to get 2X magnification without quality loss, at least that's what SONY says.

    It is very important to note that the Tamron lens has 6 whether sealings & fluorine coating at the front element to protect against water, oil & dust. Sigma 24-70/2.8 & 28-70/2.8 is just providing a rubber seal at the mount of their lenses. Also the Sigma 24-70/2.8 is notorious to gather dust over a period of time & completely lacking water & oil repellent coatings on it's front element.

  • @tinjos8306
    @tinjos8306 6 лет назад +4

    At first I thought that big dog in the background at around 8:40 was a deer. Tamron now needs to come out with an affordable ultrawide zoom to complement it. Something like 12-24mm. And then a fairly compact and lightweight 85-200mm f2.8-4. That 15mm they'd be able to save at the wide end and a variable aperture should help with making it quite a bit smaller than a 70-200mm f2.8.

  • @AgnostosGnostos
    @AgnostosGnostos 4 года назад +1

    The difference between 28mm and 24mm looks insignificant but it is very important for landscape and architectural photography.
    The 24mm is the limit where the perspective distortion of wider lenses becomes very obvious and difficult to be handled by amateur photographers.
    That's why many full frame kit zoom lenses start from 24mm.
    Also wider than 24mm lenses start to have serious issues with barrel distortion and chromatic aberration. The correction of them increases seriously the cost.
    The 28mm is a more convenient choice of lens manufacturers. The optical challenges are fewer and that permits larger apertures and lower cost.
    Also Tamron took advantage of the IBIS of the latest Sony a7 series and Sony a9 cameras. Without image stabilization the lens is even smaller, lighter and cheaper. The Sony Zeiss 24-70mm f/4 has image stabilization because it was one of the first full frame e-mount lenses and the first generation of a7 cameras didn't have IBIS.
    After the introduction of the full frame e-mount Tamron 28-75mm f/1.8 Sony has significantly lowered the price of the Sony Zeiss FE 24-70mm f/4 OSS T* ZA. With an introductory price of 1100€ it can be found at around 600€ quite easily now.

    Guys! It's gasketed and weather sealed all the way through the barrel PLUS fluorine coating on the front element. The construct is also 50% metal. It isn't "chintzy." It's better sealed than the cameras are. Seriously, now. It's like you don't even read the press releases.

    • @photographerjonathan

      @Foto4Max as the Tamron rep in the Rockies I've shot the lens in sandstorms at Sand Dunes National Park and in mountain thunderstorms. We bagged the camera. The lens is fine. Trust me: it's better sealed than the bodies are. It isn't "chintzy."

      Marc Morris Tamron rep, I see. There goes the objectivity...
      Well, then please explain the reviews popping up, after only a view months, complaining about dust and water inside...
      Don‘t get me wrong, I acknowledge all the great things about it. I really WANT to like it. But it sounds a lot like a mixed bag, and I will definitely wait for a few months.

    • @setaside2
      @setaside2 6 лет назад +2

      @@Zett76 you're right. Not a bit of my 21 years of experience in the photo industry, nor my daily working experience with this lens means anything simply because I am the rep. Of course. My bad. There's no way I might actually be able to be objective about the product I have to sell with honesty and integrity. Must be impossible because I wear the badge. Dust gets in lenses. All of them. Take a good look at the $12,000 600mm lenses after the Olympics: they have dust in their interiors, too. Dust is practically a living entity, one that views "dust and moisture resistance" as a personal challenge. Use will do that. Heavy use even more so. Heavy use then storing it in a backpack or carrying case that goes everywhere but never once gets vacuumed out also does a great job. There are a million ways to get dust inside a high level lens. *shrug* As for Tamron USA, people have a 6 year warranty and a 3 business day turn time on all repairs. If they need any lens cleaned out after a nasty shoot (certainly happens), Tamron takes care of it and quickly. I've no doubt it will eventually happen to my copy: my territory is dust central. I'm not overly concerned.

    • @Zett76
      @Zett76 6 лет назад

      Marc Morris and I know that you’re an expert because...? 😁 You’re not as famous as you think, it seems. 😉
      And I don‘t buy the „every lens“ strategy. A bit like „Smoking kills, so what? People die all the time!“
      Some lenses are way better than others in keeping dust out.

    The thing is, yes the g master it's built better, materials etc, but does the slight advantage in optical quality justify 3 times more money? to me absolutely no, I mean, yeah ok build quality, but I wouldnt shoot anyway under pouring rain with both lenses, also if i drop the gmaster with those money I could buy 3 tamrons, tamron is also much more compact and lightweight. And in the end....which of my or your clients would ever notice the difference? cause the difference in terms of image quality in between the two lenses are not 3 times bigger. I think Tamron has done an amazing job bringin us a very compact versatile lens with great image quality and f2.8. To me all the Gmaster Sony lenses are way overpriced, cause so far they didnt have any competition. I hope the game with more companies producing sony e-mount native lenses, will change and Sony finally will drop those silly prices.

    @capmk 6 лет назад +6

    Nice work! Thanks for that. However it is disappointing that you don't have the opportunity to test it on the newer a7 or a9 bodies. The AF is much slower on the a7rii if you look at a7iii/A7riii/A9. And as such there's no mentioning of the AF performance of this lens, which is quite important for event photography as an example. I love your work, but this seems like a rushed review/field-test

    • @thatcherfreeman
      @thatcherfreeman 6 лет назад

      blaaberkat on top of that, I've seen many reports of the lens gradually having problems with AF, where it just fails to lock onto the subject (and the problem usually goes away when restarting the camera). Apparently Tamron is going to make a firmware update to fix that, but I'm not buying this lens until they do.

  • @chrisvan6951

    I love this lens! It has amazing close focus and beautiful background/dof separation. I would have gladly paid an extra $50+ for a good lens hood and cap. It really looks cheap with them. After all, they are what protects your glass from evil. Even with a couple of Sony GM lenses, this might just be the one I keep on my a7riii body most of the year.

    I have one of these and its great. I don't mind accommodating the AF issues, because I only experience those when I leave the camera in a movie mode when it goes into sleep mode or I turn it off.
    AF always seems to work for me in M mode.

    The only thing that has stopped me from switching to Sony is they don't have the lenses I want yet. I feel there are more like me that are a big untapped market waiting to explode if somebody would just get in there. If Nikon gets a good Mirrorless alternative in there that window may close.

    • @Rationalific
      @Rationalific 6 лет назад +3

      +Explore Southwest: You can of course adapt lenses (including from Sony's own A-mount). Now, I personally do NOT want to adapt lenses, as I like native lenses. But that being the case, even if Nikon puts out a mirrorless camera this year, if it is a new mount, it may take another 5 years at least to get to where Sony is now with native, un-adapted lenses. So if you don't like to adapt, don't expect to have your favorite lens lineup available anytime soon with another brand whose full frame mirrorless camera isn't even out yet.

    • @jackodon74
      @jackodon74 6 лет назад

      Spot on the lens line up with there APSC is exactly the same, i recently bought an XT20 for the simple reason the lens line up from Fuji is far superior to Sony. Will keep my A7 but i only own the Zeiss 55 1.8 and a load of legacy glass which is fun to shoot with. Nikon and Canon will look at the mistakes Sony have made and get there system fine tuned to take on Sony.

    • @kurtpleavin
      @kurtpleavin 6 лет назад

      I feel that both Sigma and Tamron have had lenses in the works for a while now given that they're slowly releasing. Take for example the recent batch of native E-mount Art lenses.
      There would have also have been the decision to invest resources into developing the E-mount or the A-mlu t but the consumers have definitely favoured the E.

    • @tyroney2
      @tyroney2 6 лет назад

      There really aren’t many gaps in Sony’s mirrorless lens lineup anymore, so I can’t imagine there exists a huge untapped demand waiting to explode. What lenses are you interested in? There are exotic and ultra niche lenses from Canon- but some of those (tilt shift for example) are the best to adapt anyway. When it comes to price, Sony’s new lenses are often more expensive than some of the old classics that Nikon and Canon have- the EF “nifty fifty” being a perfect example. But if budget is a big consideration, Sony FF mirrorless with new lenses isn’t a great option.

    i so wish you could do a detail comparison on this lens with the 24-105 F4. IQ, AF, manual focus ring, zoom ring, and the stabilization (IBIS vs IBIS+OSS) and so on. Also, please don't forget to compare their macro/micro contrast, color and light rendering character as well, while most reviewers totally ignore this category, which i think is important too to represent IQ.
    Thank you, and enjoy your videos as always.

    I don’t know, should I buy 20mm F1.8 +85mm F1.8, or I just have the 28-75 F2.8? If I have those two prime lens, should I buy 28-75 zoom lens as well?

    Video doesn’t matter to me but weight does. When travelling I hate the thought of checking in my camera gear and its always a close call when your carry on bag weight struggles with heavy lenses. This lens is appealing.

    Max recommends 24-105mm F4 first lens for Sony cameras. Not G lens, but sharp though... Edit: oh you mentions that later. You read my mind...

    Not a GM, but a great alternative to the kit lens. It is well priced and alternative to amateur who wants the A7iii with a descent all around zoom lens. 24-70 would have make it bigger and expensive.

    Love the need to try and blank out the "Sony" badge ... for a review for a Sony only lens, in a video that says "Sony" enough times to turn it into a drinking game.
    But looks a good general purpose lens

    Just an awesome review from the Dynamic Duo!... I am still debating if i should buy this lens. I do shoot off center of the frame 50% of the time & that worries me due to softness corner of this lens on wipe open... Thanks for the honest review and keep them coming.

      Tamron did acknowledge that there is an issue with focusing system (1st batch i believe), DPR may have received a firmware update for a review. I know Chris is pretty good about mentioning any flows (if there is any) and he wont hide that (unless he was told)... But, there is no video review from Jordan and i am also wondering why.

    I sadly am not big on the 28mm at the widest part.. I like 24 a lot more. But I do find the close up ability on this to be very interesting... But then again I have flashbacks to the old 28-75 XR Tamron which I detested.
    I'm between picking up a used 24-70 f/4 or waiting on the 24-105.

    thanks for the video!
    i thought long about the tamron vs the 24-105g.
    but faster, lighter and MUCH cheaper, so i decided to go with the tammy.
    no regrets so far and on top of all that it has the same filter diameter as mit Batis lenses :D

    Best reviewers on RUclips, no BS just tells it like it is. I do think Sony are still on a a sticky wicket with there FF system. I still use a Sony A7 Mk1 this lens has no IBIS, i did order it then cancelled my pre order due to the focus issues which is a worry. Consumers want that good quality fast zoom but which is affordable and this well sort of does the job but it's not 24 and there are some issues with focus etc. The Zeiss 24-70 is average and the kit lens is average as well Sony still do not have a decent fast zoom for there A6500 etc which is crazy, but Sony are hell bent on releasing bodys over glass......which could cost them long term once the other 2 have FF camera out.

    3:20 what do you mean by linear transmission on the focus ring? That it's focus-by-wire? Another reviewer said that it felt good to manually focus too.

    Very good and objective review! Thank you!
    I don't see the point to buy an expensive and heavy all around full frame zoom lens. Therefore, this 28-75 F/2.8 Tamron seems to perfectly meet my needs for travel, street and landscape photography, when paired with an ultra wide prime lens.

    Da. In ich mal auf die Labor Tests gespannt. Aber in einer realen Shootinh Situation scheint das Pbjektiv echt genial zu sein. Natürlich spielt das GM in einer anderen Liga, dennoch muss sich das Tamron in meinen Augen da nicht verstecken.

    I hope Sigma answers with a 24-85 F/4... 28mm on the wide end is a deal breaker, F/2.8 is slow when you have (and love to use) F/1.4-2 primes. Still, good to see 3rd party interest in the FE mount.... def a strong indicator Canon and Nikon will be following with FF MILCs soon

    • @CFster
      @CFster 6 лет назад

      future62 2.8 is slow on a zoom?

    • @future62
      @future62 6 лет назад

      Fast is fast, slow is slow. F/2.8 is in a no man's land to me... makes zooms big and heavy, makes primes a bit pointless. Only makes sense for specialized stuff like macros or ultra wide or tele primes. IMO of course. For a one lens solution, this makes sense, but for not much more $$$ you can get the kit zoom and some fast primes.

    I heard that the Tamron 28-75 has AF hunt on a6500. So I guess it wouldn't be a good lens to use with sony a6xxx. I wonder if this is true and if Tamron has a way and plan to fix it with firmware update.

    Is the 28-75 worth the money? Yes. Is it anywhere near the 24-70 Gmaster? No
    If I was shooting the A73 the tamron is acceptable, if the R3 42mp was what I was using the 24-70 is almost a must for quality lovers.
