I keep coming back to this video because the look you got out of this lens is very impressive, this lens is extremely underrated for portraits, I think they way it renders in these portraits has a very magazine looking vibe
So many lens reviews are tech-first and experience-second. Your style is the reverse, and it’s way more helpful in understanding how the lens will work on a real shoot. Thanks!
This lens is in my kit for travel, hiking, landscape. It’s a fantastic lens for anything except portrait work. I have a collection of faster primes for this type of shooting.
Your reviews are by far the most personable and informative when it comes to first hand use. Much less theory and more practice. You're an amazing photographer that drives inspiration. Keep up the great work.
I bought this as my first FF lens and got it because I had a trip coming up. I later planned to replace it with a 24-70/70-200 combo, but I haven't done that yet. This lens is excellent. I've been a little tempted to go with the 35-150 though.
The Tamron 28-200 lens would have to be the most generally useful lens ever made. The focal lengths in this zoom ( or similar from any other manufacturer) will enable you to do about 95% of your photography as a general shoot photographer. Of course specialised portrait lenses are going to do better portrait but are going to cost about three to four times as much. Back in the film daze I had a Tamron 28-200 and it was permanently fixed to one of my cameras. Just as an aside, I still have it attached to a film camera that I keep for nostalgic purposes. As an all purpose general lens it really can’t be beat and would make a super travel camera for a family that want much better images than smart phone photography could ever give. Also great for photos of the guys pumping iron down at the gym too for single or group shots (just saying).
Couldn't believe my eyes how good these "super" zooms can be today. Even the bokeh style was mostly nice, and w/o green bokeh fringing. Actually no color fringing anywhere else neither. The contrast and flare robustness against bright light is also a surprise. If Sony only knew, what Tamron are doing for Sony currently :) Canon may become as good as they want with their newest cameras, but 3rd party lens support becomes more and more decisive, esp. when attracting new people photographers (who are usually on some kind of a budget) towards a mirrorless system.
I agree! I was genuinely impressed with the quality and sharpness of these shots considering how wide the range is and also how tiny this lens is - so so good!
@@LockeLeon By now I saw a RUclips review which rules this lens out for now (for people/portrait) due to bad AF reliability. And no, this is not the "rare" isolated issue for AF-S which Sigma attempted to fix with firmware recently.
A very well presented review. Liked the fact that both bokeh and the zoom range was addressed properly. The settings shown for each photo was very helpful as well. Thank you so much for sharing this. 😊
Charlotte was an amazing model!! I loved her movements and how creative she was! The photos were beautiful!! I think all of my favorites were on the 28mm end! After watching a lot of your zoom lens videos, I’m learning that I really love distortion as opposed to the “flatter” look at the telephoto range. Awesome video and awesome team!!
Yesss I agree, it was SO much fun to shoot with her! And thank you, I think my favs were the 28mm ones too and a couple of the 200s as well. I'm the same as you, I always lean more towards having a bit more distortion and environment in my shots hence my fav prime is 35 :D
The lens is a no brainer for travel photography. The sharpness is quite amazing for an all-in-one and the aperture is quite acceptable at all ends. 28mm is limiting but not a deal breaker for me. I'm definitely getting this lens but I wouldn't use it for serious shoots. For that, I still go to my 16-35 GM, 55 and 85 GM.
I have a 28-200mm f/3.8 to f/5.6 Tamron that I especially like to use as a replacement for my 28-70mm f/2.8 and my 80-200mm f/2.8 Nikkor lenses when I need to obtain tight face shots to full-body shots on the beach around sand and salt water. Not only does my Tamron allow me to shoot quickly but it also saves me from having to change lenses on the beach and expose my more expensive lenses to sand, salt water, and high winds. Plus, for some reason, my clients seem to prefer the portraits produced from my Tamron over the ones produced from my Nikkors. When I shoot backlit portraits, I like to use fill-flash. For me, the variable aperture makes calculating the correct fill-flash ratio a nightmare.
Girl I just love your lens reviews eveyone else be taking photos of flowers and random scenery, like we want to see the lens in action on people to see if would be great for portraits. You never disappoint love it 😍
Every video that you make is getting better and better: the quality, the comparisons, the edition, the information and the picturesss... wowww. This one have been one of my favorites recent photoshoots :D I love the look that you got with the 28 and 35 mm focal length of this lens :)
I like this lens im really impressed with Sony I just bought a Sony Nex 5R to start usually shoot with Nikon D3100 , lately loving Sony! can't wait to get the alpha
I just ordered Sony a7C silver with the tamron 17-28 f2.8 and need now a cover of 28 to 200 or 300mm range. i hesitate with the combo sony 24-105 constant f4 + tamron 70-300 4.5-6.3 or the tamron 28-200 f2.8-5.6 alone. the camera today are ok up to 6400 ISO, i don't see the problem of pushing the ISO. I don't think than the eyes can distinguish between 100 and 320 ISO with a sony a7c. i have compared the photo at multiple iso files from a labs and have them side by side on a 32 inch 4K UHD screen and there are no difference. there are not too much difference between your photo with the 35mm and this one. the photo are darker but there is not a huge difference honestly. a post edit can probably reduce the difference massively.
Nice photography by using new lence pics are good you always traying new i like it model is a also nice you are best photographer in my list keep it up
Agreed I feel like you could shoot so many different styles with this lens and thank you so much! Hahah I have to be quick because she doesn't stick around for very long 😂
Tamron has a 28-75 and 75-200 at a constant f/2.8. I believe they have a 16-28 too, so pretty much the whole range at a constant f/2.8. Might look into those.
Thanks for the review Julia. Great shots at all focal lengths. I like shots with bokeh. Like how you showed the unedited shots as well. Will be looking at this lens.
Hi Julia. Love the channel. So tempted to buy this to shoot a wedding in a couple of weeks. I have the Sony A7C with Sigma 24-70. What's your thoughts on the Tamron for a wedding please? Thanks Lee.
I came on here to have a look at this lens to go with my new Sony A7iv, here in the UK. Although I have the new FE 20-70 f4 and FE 70-200 f4, I want to buy an all-in-one light travel or walk-around-lens, and one that is versatile and light enough to shoot portraits like this, with wider apertures. It seems to be very impressive. I also use the Sony 85mm f/1.8 and Sony 50mm f/1.8 for model photography. May I just say that your model Charlotte is really pretty. Gorgeous girl.
I bought this lens but was disappointed it did not come with a tack sharp model. *shrug* But mine is getting used for hiking and travel. It's very sharp on the corners for the price. It's pretty much the best budget lens to come out for the e-mount that you can do almost any kind of photography.
This lens isn't just for beginners btw, it's also for professionals. The idea that a professional must use 2.8 lenses is just marketing. Jay Maisel for example always uses "amateur" zoom lenses, like the nikon 28-300 3.5-5.6. His work isn't much about shallow depth of field, so why would he carry that much more weight anyway? It's just about your specific needs and photography style.
The model is superb!!! Her orange dress with that grass and golden light look soo nice and dreamy. Your presets are very good. Are they free or how we can create one? This should be a nice video if you don’t have one(i didn’t check) to see how we can create a preset and where to find or buy good presets.
Yeah I wouldn’t recommend it for portrait photography shoutout to you for trying 😊 I’m a nature and landscape photographer and this lens is a lifesaver and stays on my camera 90% of the time. Can even do mid level Astro at that 2.8 limit. Hard to beat.
Hi Julia, Do you know if the lens you used had the firmware update that improves focus? I’ve seen newer reviews mention that the firmware helped a lot. However I haven’t heard any portrait photographers comment on the improvement. Thanks so much!
Best review of tamron new zoom lens ! 🤗 Thanks for the video. I am still considering to buy tamron 28-200 f2.8 or sigma 24-70 f2.8 (for the wedding and travel photo). Because i heard sigma has faster AF focus than tamron. But i love the diverse angle range of tamron. So hard to decide.. What would you recommend? 💗😘
Great video. Was thinking about picking one of these up for my outdoor portrait work since it covers all the classic focal lengths and then some. Not really concerned about the slower apertures with all the really good AI software out there that blurs backgrounds. I tried it on a screenshot from one of your photos here at f/4 and it looked great, like it was shot around f/2 or so. Those 4-5 shots starting at 9:13 (28mm-73mm) look like they could be in any fashion magazine. You'll notice most fashion magazines or online model portfolio shots from the big agency websites dont have photos with super shallow depth of field and really blurry backgrounds anyways, thats a RUclips thing haha. Will probably get one of these. Thanks
I'm completely surprised that you tested out this lens for portraits! Somehow you made magic with it. I honestly think if you attached a potato to your A7iii that somehow you would still capture something magical. To me, this video demonstrates that the photographer, subject, lighting, and post-processing are much, much, more important than the difference between lenses. The Tamron 28-200 is such a versatile lens and I can't wait to have it for travel and hiking photography. I think I'll stick with my Sony 85 1.8 and Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 for portraits though.
Most interesting in the bokeh comparison is not the bokeh, but the compression of facial features. From big nose, small head to small nose and big head and quite perfect around 50 to 100mm :-) I will use this slide to decide on the focal length in the future for portraits!
I just purchased this lens to take with me to Universal Studios. It will be the only lens I take with me. It's now May of 2022, and firmware updates of addressed the focusing issues.
As I noticed you shot some of your photos with ISO of more than 100 (200 and even 320) on a very sunny day, is there any good reason to do it? I'm really asking and not criticizing, as I always learned to use the minimal iso as much as possible. and on a sunny day, I don't really find any reason to increase the ISO.
This was a highly educational and great review of this Tamy. To introduce myself, I love to have 1-fit-all but hate to see the result of a not-good UW zoom at the end of the day and a need to repeat it all! 1st impression: Compare to their earlier Tamron 28-200mm f/3.8-5.6, this newer ultrazoom has done a great improvement. Then you really did well with natural light shooting, irrespective of the gear. Lastly, you showed very great collage images at the end, in terms of what this glass can do at the end, the first (FLs) was perfect. The second one (Bokeh in relation to constant ration Face Portrait) missed a major element. That is model's face was in motion so the viewer can not really compare the FL-related distortion of the face for comparison purposes. Nevertheless, to say excellent coverage.
Love this video Julia! If you don't mind me asking, what is the name of that nifty tool you use to record your screen viewfinder/LCD screen? Thats such a cool vantage point!
Thank you so much! I would like to make a video about them when I can use them once they come out 😄 I feel better giving my opinion of a camera when I can actually use it, see how it feels, etc rather than just reading specs!
Hey Julia, it's that guy from Chicago! I have updated my logo, it's not my first initial anymore, lol. Okay, my absolute favorite image that made me pause the video to get a closer look is at the 8:24 point of the video, honorable mention for those at 8:33 and 9:18! Those will be lottery numbers for tonight! lol. I enjoyed the entire video as always, though I am not in the market for a lens. :-) Take care!
Awesome review Julia! Very comprehensive and concise, nailing all the important aspects of a lens. Thank you! I currently have the 28-75 f2.8 the 70-180 f2.8 (both tamron)and got this 28-200 to test out and see if i should sell one. Ultimately i think I’ll keep my original lenses but regardless, this lens has an incredible value and performance compared to its cost. Perfect budget zoom all in one or travel lens for sure. But thanks again for your videos, they’ve definitely helped me on my photography journey :D
Thank you so much, I appreciate it! Yeah I feel like you're pretty set with those 2 lenses, I LOVED the 70-180 so would be really cool to be able to try out the 28-75 one day too.
Thanks for the informative review, Julia! @Matthew, I'm also trying to decide between Tamron 28-75 and 28-200 (have 70-180 and love it, too). What made you decide to keep the 28-75 ultimately?
@@Tech4Baba I wasnt aware of it at first, but the light transmission is almost a full stop better on the wide end with the 28-75. If you watch dustin abbots review comparing the two, you can see that on the wide end, he had to reduce the shutter speed by almost half on the 28-200 to get the same exposure (like 1/50 for the 28-200 and 1/100th for the 28-75). The disparity of between the two lessens near the 75 end, but being that I love shooting in low light and already owned the 28-75, I stayed with that. That being said they are all great lenses! Hope this helps!
@matthew I currently use the Sony a6000 and I have the 85mm 1.8 for portraits and 18-135 3.5-5.6. What else should I get? I shoot families and street photography for travels
@westrayc75 That all depends! Do you find yourself repeatedly using specific focal lengths? Do you really use the zoom range when shooting street photography? Do you like shooting wide open or at a specific time of day? All things to consider :) You’ve got a great focal length range between your lenses (love that Sony 85 f1.8!), but if you wanted to upgrade you could always get a wider faster prime such as 35 Or 50 f1.4 or f1.8. 35mm is great for street photography and also would be nice for wider family portraits.
Amazing video Julia! Im currently on the market for a 35mm lens for my sony (I only shoot photos). Would you go for the sigma 35 1.4 or the sony fe 35 1.8? Could you do a shoot on the sony fe 35mm 1.8 one of these days if possible? :) id love to ear your feedback on it. Thank you and keep up the amazing work youre the best
I was given a Sony A7R ( first iteration) as am historically a Canon and Olympus shooter, didn't have any Sony native ( very expensive) or non-OE glass. Purchased mint 2nd hand Sony Zeiss 35 2.8- this would be one of the most underrated lenses on the market. Superb results and nice and light. Can't go wrong unless you feel you must have 1.4- if so, why not just bump up ISO?
Thank you! I've only used the Sigma 35 on the 5D4 where I had some focus issues, it would be great to try it again on the A7III to see how it goes as it's a nice lens minus the backfocusing I experienced! I haven't used the Sony 35 1.8 but would love to use it soon and make a video about it. I also have a video on the Tamron 35 1.8 which is a reaaally nice lens in case you want to check out the sample photos I took from that too :D
Julia Trotti Yes I’ve seen your videos using the 35 sigma paired with canon :) I remember you mentioning those focusing issues. I also remember that you stated that it’s more of a DSLR thing (which makes sense to me) but upon more research, I’ve come across some mirrorless shooters who also claim that the sigma is not very reliable. I just have a hard time understanding if those focusing issues 1) in fact exist on mirrorless 2) if so, are they more apparent when shooting video? 3) even if when shooting stills, is it more noticeable in fast pace shoots (like weddings or events) and not really for creative portrait shoots (which is what I do)? I feel like the sony 1.8 would be a more reliable lens, however I do enjoy that separation the 1.4 offers (plus I love shooting in blue hour so it’s very useful to have as much light coming in to the sensor as possible). I have seen also your video on the tamron (both the 1.4 and 1.8) I just didn’t realized it was available for sony 😨 I’ll be checking that now. Thank you for responding and if you could try out the sony FE 1.8 it would be much appreciated :) hopefully when I buy one of those lenses I can also buy some presets of yours to go with them :) cheers!
I keep coming back to this video because the look you got out of this lens is very impressive, this lens is extremely underrated for portraits, I think they way it renders in these portraits has a very magazine looking vibe

As always great video! I liked 38mm the most!😍 Tbh, I’m missing Julia, Kristina and a tree soooo much! haha
Thank you and omg me toooo, I miss her so much!
Very cool and beautiful
Thank you!
thanks for sharing.. love to try out that lens too.. hope will be arrived in Bali soon
Nice travel lens. Great vid!
Thanks!
This might be a stupid question, but do you take pictures in a flat pic mode? Like not standard. Idk if that makes sense?
Most interesting in the bokeh comparison is not the bokeh, but the compression of facial features. From big nose, small head to small nose and big head and quite perfect around 50 to 100mm :-) I will use this slide to decide on the focal length in the future for portraits!
Very nice review! What is the bar mounted to your camera?
You can work pretty much any lens. Goes to show that it’s in the artist not the tool. Thanks for this video
Thank you!
what do you think 28-200mm 2.8 vs 28-75mm 2.8? thanks. which one to choose?
What wireless system do you use for your camera screen capture? Thx 🙏🏼
Hi Julie. Great video. Have you tried the Tamron 35mm f/2.8 for portraits? Really nice Lens.
Hey Julia! Awesome vid as usual! :) What mic/audio setup are you using? Always liked the audio quality from your vids. Cheers! -Tuan
How do you record your screen while shooting never knew you could do this
Just noticed you have a recorder at the tripod base
Excelente qualidade!
BEAUTIFUL...
Thank you! 😊
Love this video Julia! If you don't mind me asking, what is the name of that nifty tool you use to record your screen viewfinder/LCD screen? Thats such a cool vantage point!
Hey Julia! Love all your videos! Could you make a video and let us know your thoughts on the new Canon R5/R6?
Thank you so much! I would like to make a video about them when I can use them once they come out 😄 I feel better giving my opinion of a camera when I can actually use it, see how it feels, etc rather than just reading specs!
I'm just an ordinary guy but i had the urge to say that You are one of the best Female photographer youtuber!! Love your content everytime... ❤❤🔥🔥🔥
Thank you so much!
Or more like one of the best photographer RUclipsr. Period

Ooh nice logo and thank you so much! Haha good luck with the numbers 🤞
@@juliatrotti Thanks for the logo compliment, unfortunately the lottery wasn't as nice, lol.
@matthew I currently use the Sony a6000 and I have the 85mm 1.8 for portraits and 18-135 3.5-5.6.
What else should I get? I shoot families and street photography for travels
@westrayc75
That all depends! Do you find yourself repeatedly using specific focal lengths? Do you really use the zoom range when shooting street photography? Do you like shooting wide open or at a specific time of day? All things to consider :)
You’ve got a great focal length range between your lenses (love that Sony 85 f1.8!), but if you wanted to upgrade you could always get a wider faster prime such as 35 Or 50 f1.4 or f1.8. 35mm is great for street photography and also would be nice for wider family portraits.
Will this lense be good on Sony APSC? It seems a great all in one lens on Full frame.
I just ordered this lens for my A7C.
