I have a lot of respect for cats and trimarans, but ideally I'd want a heavy tank, with decent room, lots of food, water, fuel and a winter weather setup, also be able to be beached in the right places.

Nice tour, but no way this is going to “kill” cats. 20 tons is heavy! Especially lamenting on super-wide hull. Performance cats offer really unrivaled luxury, carbon fiber, and speeds that making ocean passages a breeze 200+ days easy! And, no heeling. Sure, they’re more expensive, but for me, the price is well worth the performance, luxury, space and ease of motion.

@@javierechevarria1548 honestly it depends. My plans, since I’m on the way to outrageous fortune, will afford me time to travel the world by ocean. So probably frequently as I have friends in Europe and plan to visit there often. But even going from California to Hawaii will take almost less than half the time of a blue water monohull. Going anywhere of any distance makes the performance a no-brainer. And, from a safety point of view, in a performance car that AVERAGES 12 knots, outrunning storms is a breeze (pun intended).
Hey, I get it. Some folks love the romance of heeling and other facets of the monohull experience. I was once such a person. But I’m 59 and I prefer traveling in comfort. Not heeling over all the time. Been there done that.

Ah, the cat, mono battle and all that comes with it. Ok, so a gunboat, HH or Dazcat is going to give you fast sea miles and comfort when at Anker but depending on budget a southern wind mono will give you similar speeds for the same budget.

Regarding the cats versus mono debate - here are pros (only) for the mono in this size / price range. Cheaper initial price, cheaper and better available maintenance, cheaper and and better available haul out, better suited to sailing in the Med and eastern US where most marinas do not have cat space available, higher load carrying capacity than cats (important to liveaboards), the monohulls are more attractive aesthetically to many traditional sailors, monohulls are better suited to racing / club racing activities, monos can be more pleasing to true sailing enthusiasts with better feedback at the helm, and feedback from tweaking sails.

Visibility at the helm seems very poor. The wide aft deck would be a safety concern when heeled or rolling in heavy seas. The separate entrances seem to be thought for charter. But having a huge master, and two unequal rear cabins sounds like a recipe for jealousy on board. I would also have serious doubts about ventilation for the cabins under the dodger. That design is an easy pass for me.

  • @constantinealexandrakis
    @constantinealexandrakis 7 месяцев назад +4

The final blow, lol. Cruising cats sail by instruction manual (cause you don't "feel" the boat), for same price you get a better quality built mono that will last longer, they are hard to maneuver in marinas in strong wind (huge platform goes flying), poor performance up wind etc. In general, cruising cats take "sailing" out of sailing. They do have advantages (more space, stable platform, shallow draft) but power cats have more internal space, more deck area, are faster and cheaper. And modern monohulls with wider beams, centerboards or shoal draft keels, raised saloons, hard top Biminis or spray hoods and large cockpits offer many of the amenities until previously only found in cats.
So, if you actually enjoy the sport of sailing but also like comfort, get a mono like the Jeanneau 55. If you want a floating apartment to spent most of your time at anchor, wait a few years and get a power cat with hybrid electric engines (like the xquisite). Sailing cats will be caught in between and in my opinion, will be a niche market in the future.

@brownnoise357 I'm sorry Bob! 🙂 Ironically, I got back into sailing recently after watching catamaran channels. And then I chartered a small mono, grabbed the tiller, turned downwind after hoisting the main, and felt the boat heel as it powered up and picked up speed and the weather helm pulled against me. I started playing with the angle of the main to the wind to get the right amount of heeling and thought to myself, I don't want to give this up for an oversized platform that slams on waves. I do enjoy sailing hobycats though. Cheers my friend!

    • @brownnoise357

@@constantinealexandrakis Weatherhelm is one of the early warning feedbacks yo get to depowerthe Sails. To me this is really important for Beamy Nonohulls with Chines and why they need a single Rudder, as best low stressed performance is obtained with the boat pretty much upright with minimum heel angle so keeping a single rudder pretty much vertical and optimised for weatherhelm feedback, and keeping things low stressed, and minimising Wear and Tear as well as Breakages. This is entirely down to being a Cruiser, who has loathed the impact on Sailing that gets introduced from Sailboat Racing, ever since the 1979 Fastnet Race Tragedy. For Fans of Sailboat Racing, carry on, just stop messing up Cruising Boats.Slamming into waves can be brain Numbing to the point of interfering with sound judgement, even with a light Minohull - in the Irish Sea Vertical faced 3 to 6 ft waves are far from uncommon, and beating to windward just isn’t fun. Hitting those waves at an angle is what finished me with ideas of getting a Catamaran, as the hulls hitting them at different times gave me what I called a Corkscrew Motion that messed me right up, and perhaps better described by SV Tonic Boatwives, as a Bucking Bronco Motion.Shame really, if you can handle the Motion, Catamarans can offer a lot. as opposed to a keel? doubtful. maybe it would allow a boat to utilize a smaller, lighter keel. Then you introduce failure points. then you would need to beef up your standing rigging since heeling is one way a boat depowers and is a reason monohulls can get away with using lighter rigging. maybe having one at anchor would be good. not sure if it makes any sense while actually sailing upwind and heeled over. Those things take awhile to spool up and tacking might get a little crazy while your sea keeper is trying to lean you in to the weather

Great walk-through BoatWives, I love your channel so don't take my critique of this boat as a reflection on you. But this boat is an abomination as configured. I thought we were over the 80s era's lust for gratuitous ego-mobiles, but here we are. Jeanneau have created yet another resort-condo boat dressed up like a club racer, useless anywhere except the Med or inside of 200 nm to San Diego. This would not even be an enjoyable sail around Hawaii, and a skipper's nightmare to prep it to get there safely. The cruising and bluewater features are all but missing in nearly 60 feet of million+ dollar yacht, save the awkward nav station under a soft dodger (whiskey tango foxtrot) which is inexcusable for a craft that is supposed to represent a flagship. I think they have missed an opportunity to at least partially redeem themselves by offering the 55 in a CC design that can provide meaningful living and utility space with headroom under the aft deck. Speaking of which:
Do people really buy these boats to invite a women's sports team to tan all at the same time while under sail? Are they building a yacht or a portable beach? It's ridiculous. Is the expectation that their clientele are all russian mobsters who pay to have people partying on the boat all the time? Is it supposed to pull double-duty as a mobile brothel for human traffickers? I don't understand the need for all of these "entertaining" spaces at all. Young people with a lot of friends are not exactly the target market. So why is it built like a discotheque, stem to stern?
At least they moved the helm forward. Something I can't stand on modern boats is the helm placement that puts the skipper falling off an open and flat stern, at the mercy of two chintzy lifelines. But on this yacht the decision was clearly secondary to making more places for people to lay about, glistening in the sun like tranches of deli meat in warm climates.
If someone is going to all of this expense to entertain aboard a luxury yacht - just buy a proper MY and forget about sailing. Or stick to pontoon boats. I have the feeling that there is a beautiful yacht aching somewhere under there if only it could escape the identity crisis.

most catamarans wouldn't compare to a 50ft performance cat, For example, you wouldn't put a Lagoon up against an Itacatamaran? The point we are working on in this video is all about outdoor living, something catamarans are famous for.

8ft draft is a killer for most cruising locations.
Its a lovely looking yacht and people who want monohulls will surely consider this one.
People who want multihulls will still want multihulls.

We will be building one; well, we are working with a navel architect and designers to produce a 43ft, a 50ft, and a 55ft. There will be DS versions available and, in the future, a catamaran. The boats will be sold off-plan to start with, and if we can reach a certain number, we will build the 55ft for a showboat and all future Patreons, etc, to enjoy. Patreon will be live soon with all the projects, etc. Then we will come to Australia so we can sail together.

big beamy monohulls slam worse than catamarans in a chop. it makes no sense to build a monohull to be some kind of hybrid or catamaran competitor. All the things monohull sailors hate about catamarans this boat tries to emulate without any of the benefits (draft, stability, safer working environment). You buy a boat for what you want to do with it, and if this boat has the things you are looking for then a catamaran should be an easier choice, especially when you can get a catamaran with 10ft less waterline but still have the same "living space". But, if having a monohull pretty lines makes one feel better about their boat then so be it. But I don't think catamarans are in any danger of being killed. Not by this boat nor any monohull.

Actually, I’m surprised you made it to the end of the video without passing out based on your breathing. Apparently all the ink that you have put on your body through all your tats has destroyed your circulation system. You are far to trashy to be showing any yacht of that class. But having said that, you are correct that it “reminds you of a Beneteau.” Actually, it is a Beneteau, regardless of what name is written on the side. Personally, as a Jeanneau 50 DS owner, you couldn’t get me on that piece of garbage. It is an attempted compromise with a catamaran. If I wanted a catamaran, I’d have a catamaran. And when you compromise on anything you get nothing and that is what that vessel is.
