      True, although also worth noting that was the *maxium* range. I don't have numbers, but from what I've read the actual effective range (at least as far as being able to reliably hit, say, a capital ship-sized target) was somewhat less.

    USS Montana was actually half built, but halfway through her construction the navy decided we need more carriers and Midway was born.

    • @stCOMMANDER_TE
      @stCOMMANDER_TE Месяц назад +19

      Different Montana. The one that was about 40% built was a 1920s era South Dakota class super dreadnought. The Montana that most people know and love had some steel cut & a handful of MK-7 406mm barrels set aside in preparation for construction. Unfortunately the entire class was canceled before construction could start

    • @FallenDemon94
      @FallenDemon94 Месяц назад +2

      wasn't after they laid the keel they stopped the construction?

    • @Jasperdog3329
      @Jasperdog3329 Месяц назад +3

      No, just no. I don't know where this rumor originated but all the Montana-class battleships were cancelled before any construction was started. Not a single keel was ever laid. Period. The hull form is not remotely the same between these two vessels. Some moron tried to go on about this with Drachinifel and he mentioned it the other day as one of the strangest fan interactions ever; guy was very aggressive about being wrong.
      The only thing the Midway-class carriers and the Montana-class battleships have in common is that the type and arrangement of the propulsion systems for the Midways was largely based upon the proposed Montana design.

    • @baronofrhodes1185
      @baronofrhodes1185 Месяц назад +1

    The actual range of the Mk.7 16"/50-cal gun was on the order of 45 km. Its effective range, limited only by the radar horizon, was about 30,000 meters. At the Battle of Surigao Strait, the USS West Virginia, armed with 16"/45-cal guns, but sporting the same fire control system as a fast battleship, scored a first salvo hit on IJN Kirishima at 22,000 meters--without visually sighting the target. So, yeah, the guns and fire control system were THAT goo. The 16"/45 was, in fact, slightly more effective at long range, because its lower muzzle velocity gave it a steeper trajectory for plunging fire.

      @@sksjshsjd9904 It is the same in three forms, but to avoid ambiguity you either use "I have quit" or "I quitted" or include timeframe in the sentence "I quit 5 months ago". Since the person used temporally ambiguous version which is most often used to indicate present tense, I'm free to read it in a semantic range that is most obvious to me based on my experience with the language and education. Especially since I've been primarily taught Queen's English and only had to deal with American bastardized version during my university education. That's 38 years of using the English used in south of England vs just 5 years in Uni plus whatever filtered down by consuming US media. On all my electronics my English locale is set to UK English, not US. Calling someone a bonehead without taking into account the intricacies and variations of the English language is a bit daft. You do you, though. You're trying to insult the intelligence of someone using secondary language, one of several known, because of something you perceived as an error in their statement. Is that the best use of you time? :) For me this conversation isn't, just had a chuckle at your comment and decided to respond. And now, it is EOT for me. :D I don't like toxic people. The Montana-class design was completed, and orders for construction were placed as early as 1939.
    The U.S. Navy authorized five Montana class battleships (BB-67 through BB-71) in 1940 as part of the "Two Ocean Navy" building program and funded in 1941, but construction was canceled in 1943. The cancellation was due to production priorities shifting to aircraft carriers, destroyers, and submarines.

    It's always amused me just how many bugs infect Wargaming's replay system.
    ANd it's new ones each time! I've not seen a recurrence of a bug after it's fixed, it's always something new breaking.
    At least it seems that way to an outside observer.

    Jingles, you sweet summer child. You are shocked by 28 km of range on a supership Maine?
    I have 27 km of range on my tier 9 battleship USS Minnesota. Yes, really. And also 13 km of detection range. Meaning the enemy sees me for 20s when I fire my guns, then I disappear.

    Shame they never built this ship, it would of been nice to have a WWII Battleship named after my home state.

      @@MYJEWISHLAMPSHADES But to answer your question, not as far as I know. Though one can never be quite certain, as you might know. I doubt it tho.

    Only nine players on a side? Looks like one or two superships stayed in the queue too long. Nice to see that MM function still working perfectly.

    It would be great fun to occasionally have say 5 minutes of "night" roll though a game. Air operations of all kinds would be affected, spotting would change, radar would would be incredibly important, torpedoes would be impossible to detect w/o sonar... talk about changing things up!
    "Actually Jim" why would there be 15 minutes of day and only 5 minutes of night?
    This is a Wargaming title, it doesn't have to make sense.

    Looks to me like Below_Average and his fellow survivors carried a victory of one crappy team against another crappy team. Nothing else in this match, except perhaps the actions of the Devastation and the enemy Kitakaze, were in any way encumbered by the thought process. Enemy lemming train blunders down to A, ships charge fearlessly into A and B and take them at great cost, but even so, if it wasn't for our heroes Below_Average_Potato, the United States, and the Forrest Sherman, that might have been a winning tactic, because the rest of the friendly team struggled to take advantage of all the juicy targets.

    Ironically enough on console, there is also a USS Maine. Unfortunately, she's VASTLY different from her PC counterpart. The console version is basically a sub-variant of the USS Montana with 10 16-inch guns arranged in the same turret configuration as the USS Pensacola. Personally, I prefer the PC version more. I like the overall hull design of the vessel.

    Jingles still wondering why BB's fire HE to do *some* damage instead of harmless ricochets.
