Guitarist Daron Malakian, who wrote it with lead singer Serj Tankian, explained: "The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass. Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line 'Angels deserve to die.'"It occurred to me how we are judgmental towards people, even in death,” explains Daron. “If someone died in a car accident, you’d say, ‘Oh, poor thing.’ But if they died in a car accident while they were drunk, that would change your whole perception of how they died, and judging his or her death a in a different way. The speaker wakes, and the song begins. The verse takes on the structure of someone narrating a person’s (‘your’) morning routine-they wake up, put on their makeup, head to the table (for breakfast, etc). However, the overall tone of disjointedness and aggression of the verse signals to the listener that there is more to this routine than meets the eye. "Grab a brush and put a little makeup (A little bit) Hide the scars to fade away the (Hide the scars to fade away the shakeup)" A further complication to the “morning routine,” the singer equates putting on makeup with putting up fronts and armor every morning to hide mental scars and insecurities from other people. @@blandface9957 thanks bud, This is why I also like RUSH, its more than the music, once you deep dive into the lyrics. Glad if I helped you enjoy this song more. (If you don't listen to RUSH, let me know, I'll suggest some with great deep lyrics).
@@saravaneerde6164 im aware. when this song came out, i was like twelve; and had the same thought as this guy. as most people do when they first hesr this song
Early 2000's nu-metal had a lot of hip hop influence. the genre gets a lot of shit for being weird but I can appreciate it for doing something different because metal was really getting stale in the late 90's. Nowadays metal and alternative rock is even more influenced by hip hop with bands like Polyphia.
It’s the best genre imo. Slipknot, limp bizkit, System of a Down, Deftones, 10 years, linkin park, Chevelle, korn, breaking Benjamin, finger eleven, cold and tons of other bands all have made nu metal songs bruh it ain’t weird it’s cool
He’s saying that he cries when angels “deserve” to die. He doesn’t think angels deserve to die he’s referring to people that have died but we’re frowned upon in death
About what I expected from a first reaction of System of a Down haha… getting down with it but also what the f*** is going on😂 great reaction man keep it up(:
As a kid from Dorset who knew this song his whole adult life just like all my mates, it was honestly so great to watch another English guy experience this for the first time - it's a wild album but it's worth listening to with the fact in mind that this was the number 1 album in the US the WEEK after 9/11 (also produced by maybe the only producer to be a legend in hip hop, rock, AND metal, the one and only Rick Rubin)
Classic, I love how when the vocals are introduced, he stops to consider if he likes it. And then moments later, you can see the confirmation. Like yeah, goes in
Dude I just discovered you today and I must say, I love your reactions. I see you going through journeys through song. Good stuff. Happy holidays and new year man.
The funniest thing is your reaction as you look from extreme left to extreme right, as if you’re searching the innermost parts of your brain for any explanation to what your ears have just registered 😂
I came here from TikTok to see you experience this whole masterpiece. Always have told that this song is one of those which are better than sex. Everytime I feel sad and at my lowest - I'm turning the volume on it as loud as I can. I highly recommend: Rammstein - Zeit, Adieu or Deutschland. Whatever you pick, I think you going to like it.
This song was supposed to be called 'Suicide' but the record company weren't happy so they "Chopped" Suicide to Suey, hence Chop Suey.. Apparently.. 🤷♂
A fun fact about this song. The story goes that they didn't know what lyrics to use for the verse in the song that goes "why have you forsaken me", so they got them randomly picked out of a random book and page they picked out of a book shelf. It's one of the best parts of the song and was completely chosen at random.
i think the meaning of the song is that often people who die from drug abuse are seen as reckless and selfish by society when in reality people who deal with so much turmoil in their life where they see no other option dealing with it than reaching to drugs. so when people dont care about drug addicts dying because they were being 'reckless and selfish' i think thats what the line: "i cry when angels deserve to die" means

Helps some??? You broke down the complexities and nuances to the song that I never even considered, fucking Socrates lmao

“Angels deserve to die?”
*confused headbanging*
There is an explanation in the comments above. Perspective of how you died kinda thing
I think the whole phrase is:
I... Cry... When angels deserve to die
it is all part of the same thought/sentence/line.
Howie’s post is on point imho.

Man, I wish I could hear this song for the first time again!!
This and the rest of the album. Toxicity blew me away back in the day.
I was 13 .. im 34 now
That's why I came here from the YT Short
Yes!!!
Same here. I wonder if I was the same. So much years later I still love it.
2:48 that Piano riff is one of the most underappreciated parts of this song. It's amazing.
I’ve listened to this song probably 1,000 times and have never noticed it until now. Beautiful!
I've just noticed the piano and I love it now that's all I hear.
I never even noticed there was a piano in the song until now. Thank you for pointing that out.
Yepppp thanks to the one and only Serj Tankian 👌🏼
@@opie9617 What?!? How could you have not?!? It's the most beautiful part of the chorus!
His realization of the “when angels deserve to die” line 😂
Funny as fuck 😂
I feel like he separated the “I cryyyy” and “when angels deserve to die” so it didn’t make sense for him in that moment lol
One of my favorites by System of a Down is “Aerials” a little slower but greaaaaat tune 🙌🏻
Best System song hands down
Yes
The switch from the hard part to the harmonizing «forsaken me» park is just sublime
and I feel like crying every time
Absolutely classic
I love watching people react to rock/metal for the first time
The forsaken me part always gives me chills
Now imagine a hundred metal heads in a club singing at full voice to every single word...!

You're right. Angels don't deserve to die. That's why he cries when they do
SOAD is probably one of the most underrated groups and more people need to know them
How TF is SOAD underrated? They're literally one of the mainstream metal bands still, despite the last release was in 2005 -_-
The Chop Suey video has 1.3 billion views on RUclips. I'm pretty sure they don't qualify for "underrated" :D
System of a down is in the top 15 most popular bands in music history how is that underrated 😂
System of a down deserves respect..vocal range is nuts...love them forever
He says; "I cry when angels deserve to die", not "Angels deserve to die" XD
