amazing content! only critique is you do this annoying pronounciacion that all young americans do where you have to pulll out the last syllable to extreme length. bodoniiiii, garamooooond, styyyyyle, which makes you come across as slightly too american (no offense intended!) thanks for the video.
One niche you didn't touch on that I kind of stumbled into is book cover design. It's similar to album art, often utilizing illustration and photo manipulation. But you also have to play with typography for the title and blurb on the back and even typeface design if a series is looking for something unique.
I would also add Film designers like Ann Atkins. They recreate a lot of period design and make many different stuff from posters to lettering, newspapers and some other props. So it’s a mix of poster design, datavis, typography, lettering, packaging etc.. Oh and also Packaging designers.
as a designer, it’s kind of hard to pick a specific niche to follow through with. it’s also good to know that you have unlimited options to choose from, and that you can master each style if you choose too. it’s a fun world to be in. the world needs designers. go for what best fits you, and showcase that talent to masses!
When I was 15, I used to make music covers and logos for my dj/artists friends, and I just suddenly stopped doing it, now I'm 23 going basically back to everything I wanted to really do. This video is awesome because now, I struggle with the decision.
The amount of value you provided in this video is actually insane. Thank you so much, I'm sure that this took an insane amount of time to compile so know that your work is greatly appreciated!
This was probably the biggest challenge that I just now got over recently. I’ve been doing graphic design for about the same amount of time, but I’ve found that typography and visual work give me the most fulfilling projects. PS you inspired me to start a newsletter myself. Keep up the great work Jesse
As someone who's going the self taught route, this list was really helpful! I had a basic idea of what I wanted to do in design but this breaks it down further. Thank you! ❤
I am one semester away from getting an AA in graphic design. It took me some time to decide what I even wanted to do but once I decided I knew there would be opportunity for me anywhere I went. I really didn’t know much more than “I want to study graphic design” so this is very helpful and puts me in the perspective of what is to come and the opportunities I can act on, thank you!
This is probably the longest shout out video I've ever seen.😅 But seriously, thank you for this. As a designer, it sometimes is tough to design what direction I should go to based on what options I'm leaning towards and finding inspiration. This was really helpful.😊👍
Woooow this is so good! I wish this video was available when i first got into college to study graphic design, it would’ve given me so much clarity way back then. However, recently, after much experimenting, I decided that i want to pursue motion design :) Keep it up Jess! I appreciate you putting out such inspirational content!
yo wtf! this is incredibly valuable man, it Also made me want to create stuff right now so it even worked as motivation. new sub and thank you for this content, looking forward to more inspo and designers shout-outs from you! cheers from Argentina 🇦🇷
I just followed and bookmarked so many new designers, thank you for this video! I'd love to see more about editorial design i.e. books/magazines/publishing industry if you ever get a chance to do something similar on that! editing to add that Abi Connick was one of my biggest inspirations too when starting out as a designer
I just watch your video I have been out of the loop for 13 years I was a full time caregiver for my parents. I want to get back into this because this is still my passion however a lot has changed in 13 years haha. Thanks for the information.
I liked this video a lot. for itemized content like this may I request the inclusion of segments on the videos as a viewer/user? easily searchable content for usability helps a lot. It is also prime content to reference, Good stuff!
My dad was a graphic designer and did just about anything design and art could be on. He was old school when everything was drawn by hand and pasteups and mechanicals in the 1970's through 1990's. You left out a very important group of designers in design history that if you want to be a good designer they should be looked at. I'm kind of disappointed you did not cover them because most of today's design is a return to what they were doing in the 1960's through 1980's. Look at Alexander Girard, Paul Rand, Art Chantry, Milton Glaser, Mike Salisbury, John Van Hamersveld, Raymond Loewy and Chip Kidd. They set the bar and are still very relevant. You have got to know this work if you are doing graphic design.
This is crazy, I was researching on which path of design I should pursue since I'm finishing up school next month. This video helps give more clarity. Great video 👍👍👍
Thanks for making this video. I'm going to school for graphic design and people keep asking me what I want to do and I keep saying I don't know yet. Thanks for showing me so many options.
I find your videos useful as a would-be client. I imagine that if clients don’t understand how much thought goes into design, they won’t value your work correctly. Getting well informed clients who will pay properly for work seems key.
You sum it up thoroughly ! I personally think that the punk DIY style is the most stylish and the most non-fake, artistic form of art that will endure all these emerging styles ! I might be wrong, but that's just my opinion! thank you always for the value you always bring to us !
I haven't seen the video, yet. But, what about: newsweeklys, newspapers, email/print newsletters, RUclips thumb pics, and book covers. Also, when I used to work for a newsweekly, they used the software Quark Express. Is this still used in the industry?
Thanks for introducing these... I think schools could give a bit more of an overview like this to students cause essentially everyone starts with a career in graphic design, and often I saw ppl get stuck in only doing graphic design, while like me personally found myself feeling a lot more intuitive in motion design. In the end graphic design does give a needed foundation to practice any of these nieches, so go do the hard work even tho you might not end up working so much with the core editorial/image base graphic design.
Hey man, super helpful video I learned a lot from it :), as a tip , I would say have some sort of lower third for the names of the sources you listed, I think me and many more of your viewers would find it very useful
Hello Jesse! i am 15 and going to college to pursue graphics next year! i wanted to know what you think would be best for someone who is better at photography and editing as opposed to drawing but can draw if necessary? im thinking maybe posters, music or album covers but i am still not 100% sure.
This is a long one but I tried to pack as much value as possible for y'all hope you enjoy it!
Thank you so much Jesse!
amazing content! only critique is you do this annoying pronounciacion that all young americans do where you have to pulll out the last syllable to extreme length. bodoniiiii, garamooooond, styyyyyle, which makes you come across as slightly too american (no offense intended!) thanks for the video.
Thank you mate, really appreciate this type of content
this video lit back the fire in me, thank u :-)
thank you this is so useful even a year from now! i just found your acct can’t wait to be a graphic designer

and so editorial design, data visualization, etc...
I would also add Film designers like Ann Atkins. They recreate a lot of period design and make many different stuff from posters to lettering, newspapers and some other props. So it’s a mix of poster design, datavis, typography, lettering, packaging etc..

I’m pretty sure he said that this list isn’t all the niches.

Do you think the world still needs designers even after the AI taking control over the world?
@@mika-mika153I hope so, or else I’m cooked 😔

Didn't see one of favorites, and one the most profitable, information and data designer.
Photography or photo manipulation could be another niches?? Btw, 3d also includes low poly and voxel art niches
I just watch your video I have been out of the loop for 13 years I was a full time caregiver for my parents. I want to get back into this because this is still my passion however a lot has changed in 13 years haha. Thanks for the information.

Hello Jesse! i am 15 and going to college to pursue graphics next year! i wanted to know what you think would be best for someone who is better at photography and editing as opposed to drawing but can draw if necessary? im thinking maybe posters, music or album covers but i am still not 100% sure.
This is pure GOLD
What’s the difference between in house and studio and how do you go about applying for them
My toxic trait be getting into all the niche. im ded
Priceless video 💘🙏
Thanks a bunch, Jess.
Thank you! for sharing
Great! Thank you so much!
Massimo Vignelli did the New York Subway in the 60s when Nue Hans Grotesk came out in 1959. See Helvetica movie
Cool concept for a video!
