      @PRIVATE The last thing holding me of from buying a Blackmagic Pocket Pocket Camera are the file sizes. i would have to spend very much money on huge ssds in my pc or is it not that bad?

  • @guptageneralstores5243
    @guptageneralstores5243 3 года назад +14

    This is the very reason why I purchased the P4K. I usually shoot on rented cameras and never really entertain the idea of owning a proper camera coz they change so fast nowadays. I usually have a recce camera on me all the time like a tiny Sony a6500 and a Leica for stills. But when the P4K released I had to buy it if not for regular use then for my personal collection coz I immediately sensed a longevity about it that I had previously felt with the Canon 5D and the Canon t2i back in the late 2000s. It's so basic that there are very little features that will be outdated. No bettering the autofocus coz there isn't any, no bettering the monitor coz you use an external one anyway, no bettering the battery coz you got that v-mount juice. Just a bare minimum camera with good colours and decent dynamic range.

    • @FrameVoyager

    All the local media companies in my area are shooting on the pocket 4k over their RED camera set ups because of the great looking footage , size, and cost of overall production. I'm getting a second one and it pairs well with my EVO II Pro. Most of the TV stuff I do release in 1080 anyway and 6k to reframe sounds like a poorly planned shot if you have to punch in ALL the time.

    • @famitory
      @famitory Год назад

      the punch-in can be part of the plan if you're flying completley solo, gives you access to limited fake pan and tilt (arguably platform and truck would be closer terms) without needing to buy expensive remote-controlled sliders and such.

    Thanks for that. I'm considering it for a while now, and I guess I'll go for it sooner than later. Coming from mft (at least partial) and owning mft cinema lenses, and wanting to learn how to properly operate a cinema camera just for the sake of it, I guess it's the best choice. Especially given the shelf price in comparison to hard-laboured OG BMPCCs.... I own a Lumix G9 (among others), and I really like the quality it gives me. But I feel the limits without even knowing them, I wish to have more direct control than the ones the G9 offers...
    And, just for a good measure: who - at least sane people - ever asks if a Leica M-A or Arriflex or Jaguar D-Type is still worth it in 2021? If something was great for the purpose it was made for it is still great after a century. The question should be: does it meet the specs I need now?
    The BMPCC 4k still produces a framerate more than 6 times higher than RUclips compression. Most people don't even use 4k screens. And a beautiful image will stay a beautiful image. Otherwise, we should burn every movie shot before Arri Alexa. And I don't think that anyone considers that.

  • @DanielSarli
    @DanielSarli 2 года назад +1

    I think it's not bad to ask yourself if some piece of gear is worth it. Technologies advance quite fast and prices usually don't drop that much, so if you are looking for a 3 yo camera, it's very likely that other camera replaced it and not for a lot more money. I'm not saying that 3 yo camera isn't still useful, but you have to constantly check that you get the best for your budget.

    I mean take a look at some of the 9x7 test footage. It's fucking gorgeous. 10GB/s.

    Great video with many good points! However, I wish you had said something about flange distance of MFT system which makes BMPCC4K very versatile when it comes to vintage lenses. For instance, I use a lot Zeiss Contax G lenses, which is something you cannot do with the Pocket 6K or other Canon mount cameras. Even with a cheap chinese MFT - M42 speedbooster I can get great footage with old M42 lenses. I think one reason why old lenses work so well with the Pocket 4K is due its crop factor and sensor size. Many old lenses are quite soft on edges, some also having scratches and other flaws, but because the Pocket 4K uses only a portion of the surface the results are great.

    I wish people would realise that real filmmakers are not picky. They choose to learn their craft before upgrading every 6 months to a new camera. Skill, knowing composition & working with light even with just using an HD camera will always win over a novice with no skills using a 6K camera. Same thing with guitar players, they want the latest pedals, newest guitar, but get an old player with a beat up hunk of guitar whose been playing for years and he'll floor the kid with the shiny pedals.

    It certainly is.. all of today’s cameras will be great for the next 5/6 years … invest in good glass. I’ll actually invest in this rather than 6k … simply because of the mount … you can adapt it to anything. EF can’t do that.
    If they put a RF mount on the 6k pro that would make it more viable.

    The "Is the Pocket 4k Worth It in 20__" videos are perfect examples of the "creatives" bubble that so many RUclipsrs live in. In the constant battle for attention people have to create these kind of videos to try to find some way to stay relevant. And sure, one or two people doing such videos is perfectly fine. But you just know that if one person does it on youtube, then 50 others will also. Because people need to maintain their views.
    It's important for the audience to realize that these RUclipsrs make up a tiny, tiny, TINY portion of camera operators, and they all operate in relatively the same way and have the same agenda. It's not bad. It's just a very small part of the wider field of videography and photography. You'll get people who talk about specs and whatever.
    The simple truth is that the bmpcc 4k is a fantastic camera. Shoot, just BRAW and the user interface on the body alone are enough reason to take a good look at this camera. I want the 6k pro. But realistically every time I take a hard look at getting it It's hard to justify it when the 4k works so well and produces such great results. Look at it this way: The BMPCC 4k is a great camera at a great price. It's also a great camera for really testing yourself. Because if you can't get good results out of this camera, at this price, then you can safely say that you have a deficiency in skill and need to work on improving. It's got nothing to do with gear.

    I do have a few issues with some of your statements or omissions.
    BMPCC 4K with an EF speed booster is not more expensive than the 6K.
    ZCAM E2-M4 is a worthy competitor for not much more.
    ZCAM E2c is significantly cheaper and arguably better for someone just starting out.

    • @FrameVoyager
      @FrameVoyager  3 года назад

      Good points! I think to me it's a if you're already that close after having to buy something for EF lenses, I would just pay the extra to get a camera compatible with my lenses. There are some issues and weird thing that can happen with those adapters at times. But your point is valid!
      The only reason I'd put the p4k above the Zcam is for the addition of Davinci resolve studio that come free with the p4k camera. Plus blackmagic has a bigger ecosystem, accessories, etc. Then ZCAM does hence why I'd point someone to blackmagic. That doesn't take away from the ZCAMs at all though, they are great cameras and great starter cameras as well! So I don't not agree with you, I just think the couple of extras you get with the p4k make it slightly more valuable. I forgot to mention the ZCAMs in this video, which I had originally intended too, so thanks for pushing back on it! You make really good points!

    Bmpcc is only good as a beginner camera if you have filmmaking friends that are willing to help you out and teach you, but for “regular “ beginners it can be horrible first camera (i know I recently bought my second pocket 4k from a guy that’s beginner).
    Sure learning manual focus and all those nice settings can be good in long run, but when you’re just starting out ot can be very demotivating and can take you weeks if not month’s to be able to create something that looks nice. Beginners often buy cameras after they see nice videos captured with it and after they get the camera they expect that same quality instantly so for beginners it would be better to get regular mirrorless camera, learn to frame and plan the shot, learn to edit , learn to expose and learn the manual focus woth that camera (it is better to have option to switch between af and mf than to be stuck with mf and not be able to shoot anything until you learn to use it that way) and after some time when you get to basics and learn about settings and cameras switch to blackmagic and you will have wonderful experience, it will be easier to get good footage and that will additionally inspire you and motivate you to do filmmaking.

    • @gregmaggi01
      @gregmaggi01 3 года назад +1

      @@FrameVoyager It probably will get very close, or even match it. Then, the only thing that people need to consider is whether they prefer the 6K vs 4K BRAW. The P4K Pro might even make it so that ND filters are built in, just like the 6K Pro.
      Do you think this is possible, or would BMD never do something like this? Since the 6K Pro was released last month and the original 6K was released in August, could it be that the 4K Pro comes next month since it was originally launched in September? That would make it so that BMD still get a lot of sales from the 6K Pro before the 4K Pro is released.
      I would really like to buy the P4K, but the Metabones bringing the price up to surpass the P6K, and making it harder to balance on gimbals is throwing me off.

    • @FrameVoyager
      @FrameVoyager  3 года назад +1

      @@gregmaggi01 I don't know tbh. I'm not sure black magic design has much of a reason to upgrade the 4k to a pro. • @gregmaggi01
      @gregmaggi01 3 года назад +1

      @@FrameVoyager I guess that is true, but then do you think that the 4K will never get an update? Seems to me that many people still want to record 4K BRAW without crop, especially due to the 4K draining less battery and using less file storage than a 6K.
      Forums are always filled with people complaining about the Viltrox adapter being faulty, or the Metabones being too expensive. I'm sure BMD are aware of this, and I believe that would be the market for the new 4K! :)
