NOW WHO'S THE DUMMY? After their breakout success with Saw, James Wan and Leigh Whannell would team up again for their next movie, Dead Silence. With this being Wan's second major motion picture, he brought back a lot of elements from Saw to help establish himself as an auteur director, as well as easter eggs and callbacks to his breakout film.
But Dead Silence also contains many secrets of its own, like fridge magnet letters, hidden ghosts, tombstone inscriptions, references to real-life horrors and so much more.
In this video I'll be covering all the Things You Missed in Dead Silence including connections to films past and future, clues about the shocking twist ending and possibly even explaining a perceived plot hole.
Dead Silence
After his wife meets a grisly end, Jamie Ashen (Ryan Kwanten) returns to their creepy hometown of Ravens Fair to unravel the mystery of her murder. Once there, he discovers the legend of Mary Shaw (Judith Roberts), a murdered ventriloquist whose eerie presence still looms over the town. As he desperately digs for answers, Jamie encounters the curse that took his wife's life and threatens his own. Directed by James Wan and starring Ryan Kwanten, Donnie Wahlberg, Michael Fairman, Bob Gunton, Dmitry Chepovetsky. After receiving a weird package with the doll named Billy, Jamie's wife is murdered and he believe's Mary Shaw and Billy are behind it.

I use to be a ventriloquist and most ventriloquists can “throw their voice”. Like making the dolls voice come from a trunk across the room. It’s a talent. I think that’s what Mary is doing when the fathers voice comes from upstairs.
dude was it fun
Like when Jeff Dunham made it sound like Jose Jalapeno's voice was coming from inside the carrying case. Then Jose says, "It's a good trick, senor." 😀
I'm a ventriloquist too but i never heard of this 🤌
@@BennyLlama39 I know that too
@@BennyLlama39 I couldn't stand Jeff Dunham
CZ: Am I becoming, like, the doll movie guy?
Screenrant: Are we becoming the doll movie channel?
We swear it's not on purpose
Lmao 😂😂😂
As far as Screenrant, I would've guessed "blatant copyright infringement channel".

*Damn bro, trying to start the fire early in the movie huh?*
Hi, I meant to like your comment but accidentally hit the dislike button and fixed it quickly, sorry!

Surely I've covered all the creepy doll horror movies now... right?
Robert
The Indian movie with that haunted doll
What about the 90s movie Dolly Dearest, the Puppet Master movies and the Demonic Toys movies
You dodnt cover "The baby in the closet" scariest movie i ever seen
About that scene you didn't understand, (the one with the father yelling), I have an idea how this could work, and it's related indirectly to the Saw series. Couldn't she have recorded the phrases said and played it back later via a tape recorder and timer combined? Just I could see this as a pretty easy trick to set up, especially if the visit was set up in advance.
Ventriloquists throw their voices during their Acts so that's what she does to make it appear as if his father is talking to him from upstairs
ScottyBoyRulez how do they do it though?
@@nyla559 practice idk
Easy really, @@scottyboyrulez. Sell your soul to Lucifer or Satan for the lowly ventriloquist ability. Why? Because being able to scare the bejezesus out of someone from clear across the room is apparently that dang fun.
@@adamgray1753Its talent. Like doing cartoon characters voices
This is one of the scary movies that still scares me, and I watch and love horror movies.
SAME it’s literally so sinister and it’s such a good scary movie!!

Pretty much what I thought.
A la Ed McMahon: Hey-oh!
I love how casually he tossed it in there too. Not angry, not snarky. Just straight facts.
Tom McMorrow well isn’t it a straight fact?
@@a.j.montgomery5539 Oh no question. I mean given the circumstances he could be so much more upset but the way he does it just makes it that much better.
This is literally my favorite movie, I'm so glad to see it get some recognition
How'd I do?
You definitely did it justice, and pointed out a ton I hadent noticed after like 20 viewings
When you hear the father’s voice coming from somewhere else in the house, I think the film was trying to demonstrate that she’s able to “throw her voice” once the twist is revealed... I’ve seen a few ventriloquists that are able to do that and it just makes it seem like their voice is coming from somewhere else. It’s all a misdirection and you have to be a super talented ventriloquist to do it correctly. Obviously it was was a more exaggerated version of throwing your voice in the film, but it was used as a red herring as well as letting us know Mary is just THAT bitch. lol
lol, but ventriloquists can do that?
Hell yeah she is 🤣
Lets see how long it takes for screen rant to start stealing
And the clock starts now...
Let’s see how long it takes for screen rant to copy THIS.
6:43 It's called "Throwing Your Voice" , it's an advanced technique in ventriloquism.
Exactly. And if you look you can see her lips slightly moving. Little details.
I love when directors have little trademarks you don’t realize are there, it’s neat.
To answer your question about how Mary made the father yell at her from upstairs, I have a theory: Skilled ventriloquists are able to make their voices sound as far/close as they want. So if Mary doesn't have the ability to let her dolls speak on their own, it could be her skills as a ventriloquist that allow her to do this.
CZ: I'm gonna make a video about things you missed in dead silence
Screen rant: *WE'RE* gonna make a video about things you missed in dead silence
I own the dvd and there's a alternate ending where Mary shaw kept him alive as a son
Maybe becouse she could torture him until he die's or maybe she takes him becouse she took his great uncle
Was he alive? I remember him becoming another one of the dolls

Yes he is alive
The better ending, explains everything
been loving the saw videos friend, takes me back to the days of watching them every year at the cinema when they released!
His videos are so nice and informative. He needs to just make things you missed videos for all the horror movies :-)

“The town now is run down and falling apart like the in real life equivalent of screen rant’s reputation”
I just love how Czs shade and sassyness is straight forward
I just love that you get RIGHT to it. There’s no 5 minutes intro about what you ate for breakfast.
I would love to see you do something on American Horror Story, like what is all the connections to every season, history of the characters, more so the connection and little easter eggs Ryan Murphy put in each season to expose the new theme of the upcoming season. But.. again mostly how all are connected lol - be safe
Dead silence is my favorite horror movie, hands down man.
my favorite movie of all time
I actually waited long for someone to post a 'things you missed' video on this so UNDERRATED movie and thanks you did this (on the same day i watched it again).
This movie scared the hell out of me. I don't do well with creepy dolls and puppets in general (though I have no problems with clowns and mannequins). A friend of mine talked me into going to see this in the theaters and I had no idea what it was about, just that it was the same group that had done Saw a while back and I'd loved Saw. I'm excited for the Mary Shaw video. Keep up the good work.
I love this movie, particularly its atmosphere and soundtrack.
This movie genuinely scared me when I first saw it at age 12, and I'm serious, I couldn't sleep for a month. Because of it I have a soft spot for it, even though you can tell in parts this is a second attempt at making a movie.
Let's see how long it takes for Screen Rant to come out with a video titled, "How I ripped off czworlds and just didn't care."
Maybe if they're not paying attention they'll accidentally leave in the jab against themselves when they rip this one off.
@@CZsWorld haha I just heard that lol. I hope they do. Also a lot of screen rants things you missed videos in their playlist have gone private. Hahaha
@@CZsWorld I really hope so
If this happens, @@CZsWorld, it will be instant Internet gold.
This movie used to scare the hell out of me when I was little.
This will never be seen but when the dead man in the middle of the floor in Saw stood up with the most impeccable score playing in the background was a game changer for me. I still call it the biggest twist ending I’ve ever seen, beating out Bruce Willis being dead the whole time also followed by a montage of what was happening. The montage with the music gives you this incredible “a-ha” feeling like you just solved a crime yourself and it’s just so well done. When he tells Adam the key to his chain was in the tub and walks out closing the door was the first time I felt true horror because the thought of being locked to a wall, in a room, in a place you have no idea, in pure darkness is my idea of hell.
The one dislike is the person who was shaking too much and hit it
Alfie Foulds there from screen rant.
28 people as of now have disliked it
I agree with the Wolf Pack, it was probably people from screen rant
I love this movie. I can't pinpoint why, but it's one of my favorite horror movies.
"The town is now run and falling apart much like Screen Rants reputation."
It's already dead mate
I really, really love this fantastic video. You do such thoughtful, painstaking work, and I really appreciate all of your videos. I am so glad you covered this film! It is one of my guilty pleasures. I went to see it because of Ryan Kwanten and because it was horror and it had puppets. I have always had a weird thing about puppets - since I saw Magic in the theaters in 1976 or 77 (I would have been 8 or 9). For some reason my mom thought it was okay to take me to this movie (LOL). I have never gotten over it, and when my dad was ill, close to right before he passed away, he started telling me that he had a "friend," with him, a puppet (imaginary). It was kind of frightening for me, even though we tried to joke about it. The scariest part was that the night before he died, he told me the puppet disappeared for good. I was really unsettled by this. Not too long after my dad passed away I began to do research at Univ of Connecticut, which is home to one of the most famous puppet museums and theaters (Ballard Institute of Puppetry). I was seriously sure that my dad's soul was in one of the puppets. Because of some circumstances, I never got to go back to the puppet museum before I left, and I still feel like I lost the chance to recover my dad. I know that sounds insane, but it is just a weird feeling.
New subscriber here, just want to say how much l love your videos! They are awesome and I've been binging them since I found your channel. I especially love how detailed your history episodes are
This is my favorite scary movie. It never gets old.

This is great! I needed new CzsWorld content asap, thanks for uploading my guy!
Also can you please do an episode on Girl in the Woods and other new installments to the Crypt TV universe?
Eventually I'll have to update my Crypt universe vid.
This is one of the better horror movies of the 21st Century. Those were some nice little details I didn't notice, which makes me want to watch it again
Now I can rest easy...thank you for going along with this
For how you are able to hear Jamie’s father’s voice from the other room, some ventriloquists are able to “throw” their voice and use something called “distant voices.” This allows them to project their voices from a distance, giving the illusion of someone talking from another room or across the current room in which the ventriloquist resides. That is what i always considered to be what was happening in those scenes once the twist ending was revealed
I just watched this movie and glad to see you’re breaking it down so precisely.
That weezer reference....I knew there was a reason I loved this channel. Deep cut too. Good job dude!
I wanted to check the comments like I always do and then I was like *oh*
Great video!!
Welcome to the early club. 💀🔔
I love the uncanny valley effect, I don't know why I feel so passionate when I explain it to people, I even look for a piece of paper to draw the graph. It's fascinating how this survival mechanish has been exploited over and over for movies and publicity.
Awesome video again. I love what you do!
Great video as usual!♥
I love this movie but its scary and I'm still waiting for part 2.
there is no part 2 since Jamie is the last descendant in the family tree. She completes her revenge in the town. I prefer this way. Too many franchise makes it less interesting like Insidious or The Conjuring. I don't feel scared like this.
I really enjoyed this movie. I loved it when it came out and It's still a favorite of mine today. Its a different direction than Saw while still holding the same style and thats why I like it. People complain about it because its not Saw. Yet if they had made it like Saw, people would have complained about them recycling the same story.
I’m so glad I stumbled upon this channel in my recommendations a couple days ago!
I really like the new look of the channel! It looks great, awesome job.
Even though it wasnt highly regarded to most. I love this movie!!
5:36 oh mah God it's Elon Musk!
Hope he doesn't block me.
CZsWorld if anything, he should subscribe to you
im so excited about this series!!! ugh I wish I knew of you before I left chicago
Good job, man! My birthday is tomorrow, so I have something to watch tomorrow!
She throws her voice. Ventriloquist can throw their voice to make it seem and sound like the dolls/puppets are actually talking. That’s how she was able to make the father yell from the second floor while she was on the first floor with Jamie.

Whats #1?
@@CZsWorld It's a tie between the Conjuring and the Grudge, I can't decide lol. I loved both of them because both in their time and being the first in their series were great, their predecessors, not so much.

I’ll never understand why this didn’t get a sequel when we have the conjuring universe and all those god awful movies. I’d rather see this than the nun or Annabel any day🤮🤮🤮
Because it bombed at the box office and the critics and audience ripped it to shreds when it comes to reviews
