Why did the ghost ventriloquist Mary Shaw keep Edward Ashen and his son Jamie alive for a time span of over 70 years? Watch this video to find out!

NOW WHO'S THE DUMMY? Beware the stare of Mary Shaw. She had no children, only dolls. And if you see her in your dreams. Be sure to never ever scream.
The town of Ravens Fair has a long, dark history that is all tied into the curse placed on it by Mary Shaw. But how far back does the malice of the vengeful puppeteer go?
In this video I'll be pulling together every shred of evidence in the 2007 James Wan film Dead Silence to try and analyse the entire life of Mary Shaw. Mary's history of bad blood with the town and the Ashen family stretches back over a century, and I'll be covering everything from her birth in the 1800s to the life changing altercation at the Guignol Theater on Lost Lake, to her eventual death and afterlife hunting down the families of those who tried to silence her.

I really wish this franchise took off. I remember as a kid this movie freaking me out lol and still liking it years later even tho the flaws.
Yeah but I'm also glad we have Insidious instead.
imo, I think this is one of those horror movies that works best as a single entry. Like with Sinister, Dead Silence has such an impact because you're learning what's going on with Jaime and the twists are actually twists. Already knowing how Mary works and why, a sequel would risk being redundant and boring, or much worse, changing canon just to make a new entry
Shinigamiinochi I agree, but I would’ve liked to see more about her character and abilities in other movies. She definitely could’ve been a new horror icon with the song and all lol
So basically if you dont scream Mary Shaw she cant kill you? She can still hurt you though right?
Dude same! I remember being so stuck with covering my mouth rather than eyes whenever I get scared or jump scared up until I was 13, and I'm 21 now and I still find myself covering my mouth from time to time whenever I get scared.
With the way she got killed Mary Shaw's a female Freddy Krueger. She was really petty if she did all that just because a kid he saw her lips move during her act.
I think she was looking for a boy to turn into a doll anyway, the ginger kid just painted a giant target in his back.. good warning for all hecklers out there lol
If you want a version of Mary Shaw that is like Freddy Krueger, watch "Darkness Falls." The backstory is similiar just much less detailed to Mary Shaw, and she is all about revenge, is shown to be burned, etc. It has it's own unique setting and also stars Emma Caulfield/Anya from Buffy the vampire slayer which is why I bought it originally actually.
As someone mentioned she was looking for a victim. Not only that the narrator of this video implied she was probably a victim of abuse/bullying that helped push her to her acts. Much like carry.
@@oneandonlysound3453 That movie was terrifying when I was younger.
@@oneandonlysound3453 its* own unique setting.
This movie isn't perfect but it is underrated. Still enjoy it a lot.
I love dummies being to life like a goosebumps slappy the dummy vs Billy the dummy from dead silence
This is the only movie that have traumatized me....
This ain't a movie, it's a RUclips video
Zac Snelgrove they talking about the movie numb nuts
@@southernforestgypsy it's clearly a joke but ok
The concept of this movie was pretty brilliant in my opinion. Her whole concept revolves around her trying to get you to scream. It not only justifies the jumpscares but also caused her to stop using them the moment she realized they wouldn’t work on him. Using the whole “your father was a puppet all along and I was your step mom” reveal actually shocked me up more than the jumpscares did. It’s almost a bit sad it ended on a complete note, it didn’t really leave anything for a sequel and that’s kinda disappointing…..
Apparently they're bringing out a sequel next year
Mary Shaw looks like she just woke up during peak quarantine

@kieron spiteri ok boss
Dead Silence is such an underrated horror film. I recommend it all the time and it amazes me how many people have never even heard of it. Great video!!
Hello baby what's up
I watched the movie when I was younger but I forgot the name
Even tho it’s an enjoyable movie the twist ending with his dad was incredibly stupid.
First time hearing about the movie
The directors cut is even better. It adds more to the lore.
When I saw this movie at 15 I legit stayed up all night until sunrise because I was so afraid of it. I slept with my lights on for a week because I just imagined Mary's haunted ass floating across my bedroom.
OMG SAME😂😂😂😂😂😂….LITERALLY THE SAME
The scene in the movie where Jamie's father tells him that spirits have long memories was a very powerful scene. Mary Shaw was trying to get Jamie to completely give up at that point. Her character is very unique.
Great video.
and he should have gave up he would have been spared a fate if he had just left town.
@@willhuey4891 well, he wouldn't

I was saying that it looked a lot like slappy. Wonder how they got away with that.
A lot of people don’t give this movie enough credit, but it really influenced a lot of horror after it came out
Freaky old woman in a crawlspace jump-scare felt familiar when I saw The Visit, and now I remember why. Both were pretty anxiety inducing.
This is just a classic, easy to enjoy movie that I can always put on and when going to sleep. Only other movie like this is The Mummy. The Brendan one, not Tom.
I always took it as Ella was the perfect doll not Jamie's father and that was the twist. A doll that can pass for a living human without physical manipulation. That's why you see a picture of Ella in the blueprints for the perfect doll.
And maybe its just me, but Ella does kind of look like what you might imagine Mary would have looked like in her younger years.
Um, yeah, that's literally the case. Who thinks otherwise?

IT Taxi Driver
The movie led me to believe Mary already had supernatural abilities even before she was murdered. She made her dummy talk at the same EXACT time she was already speaking, in two completely different voices. It's possible someone could do it with nothing but physical skill but extremely unlikely and the fact that she got into occult-like practices (turning the bodies of her victims into dolls) hinted she used another way to make her dummies talk- possibly by using the souls of the children she killed to make her dolls? Or maybe she stole the voices of children? Either way I really think how she made her dummies talk through the use baneful magic which stained her soul and damned her hence why she was able to come back as a powerful witch-like spectre!
She was supposed to be one of the best so that ability I don't doubt, also part of the reason I think her curse was so strong, namely that when they cut off her tongue they unleashed her raw hatred and allowed it to bring about a death curse. They took her greatest power, so the curse came in the form of her coming to take it back Eye for an eye style.
STAAAWP 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
@@RiniDiamandis stop what?
Yeah, that is a very interesting theory! Thank you for the new perspective on my fav horror movie 😍
That’s exactly what I thought too, her main doll was pretty much alive at the theater scene and it almost feels like it had its own will. After the red-haired boy said that he saw Mary’s lips moving, Mary wasn’t bothered that much by his statement, but the doll was. I think she is a witch of some sort and definitely her dolls are not just normal dolls before she was killed
I love this movie. It’s so simple but effective. Mary Shaw is THAT bitch and I wish she would have reached cult horror icon status up there with Jason Vorhees, Freddy Krueger, etc.
Judith Roberts was perfect as Mary Shaw
I wouldn't mind a sequel where the entire town seems to have brought back its economy cause everyone there is now literally being controlled as dolls of mary shaws', who's luring in more people to steal the voices of so she can replenish her collection of the 100 dolls that she lost.
Yeah that's like the only thing I feel like I still need to see is the town when it's actually functioning.
That would be 🗣📢 AWESOME 💃🏽🕺🏽💃🏽🕺🏽
Yesssss send them this and of course get your monies🥳🙌👏👏👏
I’d prefer a prequel more focused on Mary
4:03 Billy and Mary talk at the same time. This was never addressed.
I always thought there was a supernatural element and that Billy actually was alive
@@DarthFurie It almost seemed to me that the filmmakers hadn't decided on that.
It kind of doesn't make sense for her to be so angry with the little boy when it gave her a chance to show how talented she was, given they were both talking at the same time.. it also didn't make sense how when the other little boy tipped over her coffin that he seemingly new then not to scream when nobody should have known at that point
@@DarthFurie She probably sold her soul, and she either was given the ability to do more than one voice at once or Billy is possessed by a demon.
In the deleted scenes of the movie, Ella and Edward fought a lot with him often beating her and one night he pushed her down the stairs causing a miscarriage so in her grief and anger of losing her unborn baby she dug up Billy and let the spirit of Mary Shaw possess her and you can kinda guess what happens from there
Interesting
Good thing it was deleted. Don't like it
I think they deleted it cus it left a lot of questions. As in who let Mary Shaw possessed them when she killed half the town? Why didn’t she finished the Ashen family? How did they put her spirit down?
I did look some deleted stuff up, and the step mother involvement made more sense.
@@the-berries-and-cream-dude Marion did say they did as she asked to bury her with her doll children maybe she was her spirit was sort of at peace. Til the stepmother dug her up and gave her a vessel to finish off the ashen family and anyone else. Just a guess.

Could be better
The movie not the the video xD
I really thought Mary when she was alive was possessed. During her stage show it seems like she is loosing control of Billy. A real struggle, not something for the audience.
I thought that too like in her quest to make the perfect doll she stumbled across occult practices
The quick cut to : “AAAND HIS NAME IS JOHN CENA!” actually cracked me up both times. Well played 👌🏼😎
Agreed 😂😂
Fr tho😂😂
Mary's death is similar to Freddy Kruger's death
Freddy:died by angry parents
Mary:died by angry parents
Mary: died by angry parents
Here's hoping Dead Silence also won't get a reboot where the movie tries to sell Mary as a helpless victim to an audience that already knows her entire backstory
@@shinigamiinochi i mean tbf in the og freddy movies there was always slight hints towards him being innocent in the first one
@@NeloBladeOfRanni This is very true. There was some censoring involved in what was made in the original and even up until 3 really (when Nancy was basically the main character in other words). However, at the point of how many he'd killed by 4 and then freddy's dead it's "yes 100% AND he had a FAMILY!" (underrated in my opinion, goofiness aside) nobody cares about that anymore, he was definitely one seriously evil monster. Same with mary shaw, except that we do know 100% b4 death.
@@shinigamiinochi or something creative or something
Almost screamed at that thumbnail. She was waiting in the wings I’m sure lol! This was the first horror movie I owned and saw it with my sister on opening day. It was a great experience with a full audience!
I'd love to see people react to the ending.
CZsWorld Oh we all were shook! When it showed the flashbacks of his father and how dead he looked anyways we realized Mary played us like a damn fiddle.
A friend talked me into seeing this one in theaters. She knew how much doll and dummy movies scare me and I had no idea what this movie was about until it started. The ending scared the hell out of me.
@@CZsWorld there are alternate endings on disk that are... Strange
@@lucagraham6017 yeah it contradicts the whole movie. They make it so ella is a real human who got possessed by mary shaw and in the original ending ella is the "perfect" doll she's talking and sketching out. Very odd choice to try and go that route makes sense why it was a alternate ending.
Its honestly baffling that this didnt turn into an entire franchise or something. Flat out one of the most effective horror movies Ive seen, and mary shaw as a baddie beats out most of the demons and spirits in the slew of ghost movies that was sparked by insidious' success
I completely agree … this movie was amazing
Honestly the first movie was not successful and people hardly know of it, it's not a surprise it didn't get a sequel
Unfortunately they released it during St. Patrick's day weekend (which people are out drinking because it's St. Patty's on a weekend) but also a massive snow storm hit the east coast which stopped a lot of people from driving to the theaters. If it was released in October I think it would have done so much better.
I was caught off guard with the main characters dad being a doll at the end.
Damn it. I forgot the Cena joke was coming. Touché.
I feel like she's kinda a hypocritical villian, because she did kill that little boy and then his family wanted revenge.
* thanks for all of the likes, I didn't think this comment would spark alot of conversation, but I'm happy it is.
Aren't most!
Like how Freddy Kruger kills the kids of the ones who killed him in revenge, even though he did kill/molest the kids he was accused of.
Agreed
Right. And then you end up feeling slightly bad for them. Maybe the violence of the death and the fact that the entire town gets in on it.
She’s not meant to be sympathetic
Dead Silence is a completely underrated film and easily one of my favorites.
So if and when I see a video about the movie, I click on it.
It's my favorite movie of all time
@@Will300tv mine too ever since I watched it (15 years ago).
What I like about this film is that it's a rare instance where it makes sense that a ghost is only appearing at night and only trying to spook people.
Most other films struggle with why demons don't just kill people.
I liked the look of surprise when people realized they forgot to suppress panic around Mary Shaw, especially the old man who warned others
I feel bad for him. He made it so long.
Mary Shaw would not be able to kill introverts and people with anxiety. They already know how to suppress panic (laughing that slowly transitions into crying)
@@CZsWorld are you getting closer to doing a Freddy Krueger HORROR HISTORY?
I always took the "perfect" to be the life sized dummy that could be inhabited as a ghost. The nurse/stepmother was this "perfect". She used this as a like phylactery to hold her spirit in the physical world while using her other dummies as a conduits of her spirit. This way she could live forever.
That isnt immortality, since her spirit is simply controlling the life sized dummy. The spirit is still dead.
How about the history of the ghost woman from the movie Darkness Falls.
Joel Morris isn’t she the Tooth Fairy?
@@andrewquick4176 yeah
Fun story: when this came out, we rented it to watch with our cousins and after it was done my brother and one cousin went outside and my other cousin and I went to my room to get something, and a musical porcelain doll I had stuffed on an open closet shelf had fallen down and was facing the door when I walked in. When I went to pick it up the turnkey was bumped and it started playing a few notes. Boxed it and it's friends up after that and sold it to the first sucker I could at a garage sale. Lowkey had a dream about her last night and woke up scared by the shadow of my dresser 💀
This is one of the few horror movies that has actually scared the shit out of me to such extent that I still feel uneased when I see old dolls/puppets
It has to be there because he needed to see his dead father to scream. Really good break down, very interesting seeing it from Mary's perspective on trying to get him to scream.
@viggianoj what if you just never screamed though
This movie was absolutely amazing, well-done, and well-written and deserved a trilogy and WAY MORE RESPECT.
We had all these creepy evil dolls, with a person with a backstory both very disturbing and with a protocol that's horrific.
Her dying wishes, her continued madness after death, actual body possession revealed, is genius.
Way better than that ridiculously boring, stupid Annabelle trilogy or Child's Play "2019" the horrid reboot.
Also, she's not female Freddy krueger, that's the burned woman from "Darkness falls" with a much less detailed but similar backstory and is dangerous is a totally different way. I like it exists since we only got one dead silence though.
The suit is back I repeat the suit is back

I love this movie. The sets, the atmosphere, and the music are all fantastic, and it really brings you back to a simpler time, when movies were creepy because of the imagery and "imagination", and not dependent on jump-scares. This movie is 100% underrated, and I encourage people to seek it out. It's super cheap online, and entirely worth the low price.
Thanks to this video, I just realize that how could Mary Shaw imitate Marion's voice to lure Henry when Marion was still alive? I thought Mary Shaw could only acquire this ability after she killed someone.
But still I love this movie and everything else James Wan has filmed.

Take that Mary Shaw.
There were reasons why Edward Ashton and Henry Walker were never touched for all the years she killed and it was because they were apart of her plan. She needed Henry because she wanted to leave one person who was there the night Michael Ashton made the comment he made to tell what happened that day and hopefully told the truth about it and for Edward is so he can continue the Ashton legacy if she had killed Edward the legacy would have died so she let him live so she can continue taking victims of the Ashton family
