  • Jaws didn't just feast on kids and surfers who dipped into his territory... learn how he nearly destroyed the ENTIRE town of Amity Island!
► Subscribe: goo.gl/DT39UP (Don't forget to turn on deathbell notifications!)
While the film version of Jaws puts more of a human perspective on the attacks that took place on Amity Island, the novel tells the tale of a demon rising up from beneath the sea to bring terror upon the community of year-round residents.
Amity Island was a summer community on Long Island's southern shore that saw it's population tenfold during the summer months when it's beaches could be open. Their entire economy hinged on that Fourth of July weekend, using the influx of Independence Day traffic to carry it through each winter.
But one summer, a viscous beast arose on the shoreline, and not only threatened the swimmers looking to catch some New England waves, but nearly derailed the lives of an entire town.
I am of course referring to the titular monster: Jaws (also sometimes known as Bruce in the movie). This 20 foot long great shark was a menace to Amity's summer season, and took numerous victims as snacks along the way.
In this video I'll be covering the entire known history of Jaws, from the initial incident, to the acquisition of a taste for human flesh, the attack too gruesome to include in the movie, and finally, his less-than-glamorous demise.
I'll be looking at the impact Jaws had on the town through a psychological lens. I'll also be teaching how Peter Benchley's depiction of the creature in the book serves as a more realistic illustration -- and discussing how and why Jaws might have done some of the things he did based on information we have about real shark behavior. We'll find out what was realistic and what wasn't as we look back at the entire life of horror's greatest shark.
This will cover the entire known history of Jaws. Please note that this will only analyze the creature as he is written in the book. I will show clips from the 2009 movie as a visual aid, but for the purpose of Horror History, the book is canon!

    About Jaws
Directed by Academy Award® winner Steven Spielberg, Jaws set the standard for edge-of-your seat suspense, quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon and forever changing the way audiences experience movies. When the seaside community of Amity finds itself under attack by a dangerous great white shark, the town's chief of police (Roy Scheider), a young marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a grizzled shark hunter (Robert Shaw) embark on a desperate quest to destroy the beast before it strikes again. Featuring an unforgettable score that evokes pure terror, Jaws remains one of the most influential and gripping adventures in motion picture history.

Fun fact: Decades later, the woman who played Mrs Kintner walked into a restaurant to eat. Upon looking at the menu, she notices a sandwich called ''the Alex Kintner'', asked a waiter why this is on the menu, he said, ''Our chef played the part of Alex Kintner in the movie Jaws'', She stood up and yelled, ''I PLAYED HIS MOTHER''! Jaws is based off of the jersey shore shark attacks of 1916 (Benchley did a ton of environmental activism here in favor of shark conservation) and the tourism and capital first mentality is something very, very ingrained in this state! Amity Island was also loosely based off of Cape May (also known as Love Island), America’s “first” beach resort destination and popular spot for white sharks…something locals are asked not to talk about ;)
Also Hooper’s character design is loosely based off of famed marine biologist Jacques Cousteau!

You could definitely write Jaws today, you just have to be a good writer to pull it off. People haven't become more 'woke' about sharks they just are better educated about how shark attacks are rare and their aggressiveness is a myth so to get readers to buy into your story is more challenging but not impossible. Furthermore, a modern Jaws would probably work better as an allegory or metaphor - depict how the shark represents the greed and simultaneous the understandable struggle for survival for the town - how to handle such a dilemma etc. That's what a more modern Jaw would be a character-driven story about an economically struggling city faced with impossible decisions and the interpersonal conflict that arises from that.
Just saying you can't do it bcs people are too woke today is admitting you don't have the skills as a writer to pull it off.

I think that a new Jaws sequel could work if the point of the film was someone like Hooper trying to lure the shark somewhere else, or cut off its' food supply like he suggested Larry do in the original film. If they portrayed Jaws as a sympathetic predator instead of a bloodthirsty monster, I think it could work. Shit, even in the original movie and book, Jaws isn't necessarily sadistic, he's just a shark trying to catch his prey, and I assume that he's only killing and eating humans because he's starving. People just took the movie too seriously in my opinion. I don't really blame Spielberg or Benchley, I moreso blame the audience reaction, you know?

Jaws is strangely comparable to the covid pandemic when watching it recently. A community threating outside force ( shark and covid ) comes in and wrecks havoc but all the while the politicans want to keep the economy ( the beach and buisness ) open knowing it'll hurt more people and downplay the danger ( the mayor and any politician not taking covid seriously ).
