SPIRAL: FROM THE BOOK OF SAW. Years after the turmoil that Jigsaw and his successors caused for the Metropolitan police department, a new mastermind dishes out vigilante justice, but this time the main target is the police officers of his city. For the first time since 2007, director Darren Lynn Bousman returns to the franchise as a brand new set of characters try to unravel the mystery of this new killer.
Like all Saw movies, this one features many hidden details you might have overlooked, like the pig symbols hidden in many of the crime scenes and their new meaning, references and hidden messages in the graffiti of the city, in tattoos, on laptops, tablets and so much more!
I'll also talk about how the traps in Spiral were inspired by Jigsaw traps from the first 8 Saw movies, other Saw related easter eggs, possible cameo appearances, connections to the previous movie Jigsaw and analyze the ending!

About Spiral

The glass grinder trap reminded me a lot of the needle pit from Saw 2. Pete was a recovered alcoholic, so for him to get pelted by shattered beer bottles felt a lot like recovered heroin addict Amanda getting thrown into a pit of used syringes.
Also, the movie ends with William giving Zeke a “shh” gesture after Zeke’s dad is killed, the same gesture Zeke gave William after William’s dad was killed. That’s a nice parallel, I think.
In the symbolic irony, yes that can be argued. However, the actual function of the trap… is basically an evolution of the Freezer Room from Saw 3. They’re both strung up in the same position. They’re both hit periodically with something. The lock is above their hands in both cases. Both cases even had the main protagonist injure their face in the process (Jeff tears off cheek skin and Zeke gets glass in his face).

He's surprisingly good in that role.

Most of the spiral traps are inescapable this was an easy give away to it being a copycat rather then one of Kramer's accomplices and apprentices
Well his apprentices have also made inescapable traps.

Technically, according to him, he's never killed anyone, but they failed to want to survive his traps and "killing is distasteful" (in his words).

I saw that tweet! Not sure if he meant that it's the same building canonically, or they filmed in the same building.
If this is canon that could help add credence to the idea the cities are the same (or at least close enough to easily cross)

The trap for captain Garza is really gruesome and yet most fitting with her actions. She was part of covering up corruption, so in a way when she failed her task Zeke peeling her skin away at the end kinda foreshadows how he's learning why everything is happening.

It’s so saddening when they don’t point out the fact that the “crack addict” dance that chris rock does while he’s waiting for the dealer to unlock the door, is a call back to his role in the movie new jack city, where he plays a junkie and does that same dance.
Right?!? He even says “this is some new Jack city shit”.
This is the comment I was looking for. I was laughing during this scene.

Absoluely LOVE that someone bothered to talk about how Schenk’s traps are essentially “evolutions” of original traps. I noticed that on my first viewing and noticed many reviewers or even other Saw fans seemed to neglect that detail. Great work as always, CZ.

I specifically love any of the ties to Saw IV specifically because Hoffman was technically recruiting Riggs and that’s what the game was, and William was murdering officers and decided to try and recruit Ezekiel and used his father as leverage just as Kramer did with Detective Matthew’s son in Saw II. Best parallels I noticed.
The reason why the purse theft was punishable in the jigsaw film is because she saw the woman collapse of an asthma attack and the inhaler that would have saved her life was inside the purse and the purse snatcher just ran with her purse and let her die for just over 3 bucks. This crosses the line into murder.
That being said, in Saw X, John also sees a janitor try to rob a terminal patient of their jewelry and he was just as willing to throw them in a trap.
One thing you missed with Angies trap, the spine severing calls back to Art Blanks trap in saw 4
but unlike Arts Spine trap Angies Test Is So unfair its either bleed to death after ripping her spine or Suffocate/Drown in boiling wax
I like to think Chris Rock wearing a backwards cap in his younger scenes is a callback to John wearing a backwards cap in a flashback.

I’m praying that in the next saw film, hoffman is involved in some way. Hoffman is one of my favorite characters in the entire franchise and I really hope to see him again in some way

Here's something you missed, I can't say this for certain but I'm pretty sure I see a Canadian flag in the background of the first 4th of July scene, which obviously doesn't make sense.
Chances are this is because some of the movie was filmed in Canada, filmmakers just overlooked it.

The "don't we need a warrant for this?" and the ignoring of the requirement of a warrant seems like a reference to the first "Saw" where Sing convinces Tapp to ignore the need for waiting for back-up in apprehending Jigsaw (spoiler alert: Sing was not only wrong: he was DEAD wrong).
Garza needing to sever her spinal cord to survive seems like a reference to Art Blank's trap in "Saw IV", which will sever his spinal cord if he doesn't play by Jigsaw's rules.
The Puppet Trap also seems like a reference to the Drill Chair, where Tapp and Sing had to choose whether to save Jeff Ridenhour or arrest Jigsaw.

I noticed that at the beginning of where John is talking to the detective he says something to the effect that his son is probably sitting in a corner and on the monitors he IS sitting in a corner. John couldn't have know this since he is across the room. So he had all ready actually seen what had happened.

I loved the Zepp callbacks in this movie. The investigative variant from Saw (You OK?), the Severed Hand piece from Saw VI during the finale and the Laser Collars rendition from Jigsaw.

Here's one more you missed - the news station that harasses Marcus at his apartment (WF95) is one of the news stations seen enquiring about the copycat killings in Jigsaw.
They appear outside the hospital, when Hunt is leaving the precinct, and when Kramer's casket is exhumed. They also appear later on in Spiral in much the same capacity, inquiring about the death at Constantine's.
An interesting detail I noticed: at the end of the movie when shank escapes, he shushes zeke up just like zeke did to him when he was a kid……

I think there is a reference to Jigsaw when Zeke says: It could another copycat.” To me this could refer to Logan framing Detective Halloran and making the public think he was the Jigsaw killer. But that’s what I think.
