Thanks for taking the time and doing the video. Really awesome job. Hope to tackle this project this weekend. Keep up the great job!
A really good video. My comments may seem nitpicky, but having done this on Hondas over their lifetimes, I learned from experience.
A 12" bar clamp can be used to retract the piston completely before removing the caliper. It is easier to pull the rear rotors if you back off the parking brake shoes first. A tiny amount of a penetrating oil where the hub protrudes helps enormously. Removing the rotor with 8mm bolts is easier if two are used. The critical part of the hub face to clean is around the center where it passes through the rotor. (It's less critical if new coated rotors are installed.) Retention screws ony need to be finger tight.
Clean the caliper guide pin bores before relubricaing. If the old grease is petro based by a previous tech and mixed with new, it will cause the guide pin seals to swell and the pins to bind. Relubricate with silicone or synthetic brake grease. DON'T confuse the two guide pins, the one with the flats goes on the top. Reversing will cause binding.
Cleaning the piston seal with brake cleaner removes rust flakes that could be scratch/cut the seal as the piston is pushed back in. Rust trapped in the grease will absorb moisture, swell and degrade the neoprene. Cleaning is the difference between a seal lasting 10 years and 20. Coating the outer surface of the cleaned piston seal with a synthetic grease will keeo it dyr and block chemical degradation. Greasing the inside exposed surface of the piston helps the new pad's clips to slide into that bore.
Thanks Jim. This helped me a bunch. Been awhile since I've done breaks.
0:32 “bc the right rear stayed applied” = caliper locked up. I had to rewind that part 3 times bc I couldn’t figure out what he said
Thanks for the video!!
Thanks Jim nice to learn some tricks of the trade. You are a very good teacher!
Great Video! very detailed on every parts of the brake. Thank you!
Great job on the video, I like it simply because it’s what all the vehicles I work on look like, Pennsylvania, most videos I watch the vehicles have like next to know rust, subbed
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to do this...
Awesome video. I just did my CRV brakes. One tip. Pop the rubber shock absorber boot off (from the bottom). Mine split when jacked up causing suspension to go to its limit of travel.
Good job. I'm glad I don't have to deal with that much rust
Great video!
Great video...very informative and good tutor.
Thanks, great video and changed my discs and pads no problem with the good tips in this video. :)
I'm happy to help.Thank you for watching.
wonderful video...very technical and detailed....5 stars
Rama Kambhampati thank you for stopping by the shop
Thanks for sharing. Great timing: My brakes are down to 4mm, time to get new brake pads from O'Reilly Auto.
Great step-by-step procedure Jim and I'm sure this will help a lot of DIY guys out there.Keep up the good work and take a break once in awhile :)
Thank you for stopping by the shopTerry

Great video instructions! Thanks!
Thank you for watching
I was told that those Phillips screws are used at the assembly line to hold the rotor in place during assembly and after that they are not really needed. What do you think? I used an impact screwdriver to remove the ones from my wife's '08 Pilot and it sure makes removal easy!
Thanks for the great videos Jim!
You are good.Very particular.I would want you to do my brake job. Thanks for the great video.
Thank you! keep it up.
Thank you for stopping by the shop
Good info and vid buddy! So glad I don't know about rust up here. I guess you eat that stuff for breakfast down there and that's why you are so healthy. Take care
The Car Doctor HI Tim. You know what they say what Ever don't kill you makes you stronger.Lol
I hear iron is good for your heart.
Thank you very much well Explain you have a Lotta patience to Explain everything With detail I save myself $300 thank you
Jim, Been away from your videos for awhile and am thrilled with your new video equipment, positioning of the camera, and well thought out explanation of why things are done in the sequence described. Question..What is that thread size for the bolt used to remove those rotors? Many Thanks.
8mm standard x 25mm if the rear shoes are loosened
what s the procedure for the rear parking brakes adjustments? thanks for the great videos you make👍👍👍
I use that impact driver every once in a while and boy is it a life saver. I know time is money but for us DIY'ers do you think painting the brackets and calipers would help prevent them from rusting so quickly?
What type of bolt did you use to help remove the rotor?
Great job describing the job! Very helpful. I'm also interested in what size bolt you used to remove the rear rotor. Thanks!
8 x 1.25 metric
Very good instructions just one thing you didn't show the master cylinder fluid level when you pushed the pistons back in, the level could be too high.
What brand of rotors did you use? That black coating looks like a good idea so it doesn't rust to the wheel.
hi, could you let me know the screw size used to screw in and taking off rotor? I am talking about at 10:09min into your video
Thank you
You're welcome
Are the rubber boots for the front and rear brake callipers exactly the same or different lengths?
How you get the new pads in since it's bigger and the old ones are worn out?
Hi Jim, How many brake jobs do you think you have done? My guess in the hundreds, maybe thousands..
Great information, tx very much! my crv's brakes don't squeal or grind and the pads still have life in them. So is it necessary to replace the rotors?
If they are making noise and the pads are still good. Then you should replace the brake pads with a good quality pad and if you want to send me a picture I can see what the rotors look like. Thanks for watching.
Jim all the people I talk to never service their brakes, they just go from one brake job to the next and wonder why they have so many brake jobs. I say every two years max just to clean and regressed goes a long way. Cheers.
STEVE ROB is
Richard Gallimore 👍👍
Good job Jim ! That was a rusty one !!!
Thank you for watching .Yea whats a little runst it makes the day go faster.Lol
jHey Jimmy, Thank You for all the great videos from a Pro. Do you have any tips on losening rusted 17/19mm caliper bracket bolts? Using breaker bar but still stubborn. Penetrating oil? Heat with small torch? (I don't want to snap them!) Thanks.
I would recommend just penetrating oil no heat.
Great video but want about opening the master cylinder cap before you start any of this work?
No need to unless the fluid was over filled. Thanks for watching
Hey size of the boil that braked is screw
You didn't torque those bolts to spec?
Hi Jim! How often need to change router on honda crv my one is about 2013 crv ex and its about 73000 on it. thanks
Good question but it all depends on your driving habits. The best thing to do is to pull off the wheels and do a visual inspection. Thanks for watching
What was the bolt size for pulling the rotor? What is the name of the scissor like tool for pushing brake cylinder back?
The tool I used is made by Snap on tools
Torque spec. Please
Bolt size to remove rotors is M8 x 1.25
Thanks for watching and your input.
jimthecarguy Thanks for sharing your experiences. I have replaced pads and rotors on 2005 Camry and 2010 Element. My 2015 CR-V will need all 4 done very soon as I am down to 4/32”. Your information has been most helpful as I learned some new tricks from watching your videos.
They are not philips head screws. They are Japanese Industrial Standard screws, that's why a philips screwdriver will not work.
Sharap
Thanks for watching.
Get the stupid ad out of the way of the video so one can see whats going on for godsake
What an idiotic engineering design of the rear brake on the CRV where it needs that much effort to take out the pads.
How is removing 2 bolts "that much effort"?
Jim, some mechanics put anti seize on hub to prevent rotor from sticking due to rust. Is it good idea?
Good question.Yes you can it will make it easier the next time.
jimthecarguy Thanks Jim, one more question, do you change the brake shoes when you replace brake drums? The brake shoes has minimal wear
Yes I always do replace the shoes and drums as a set.
