ah yes, because this is a very bad bad video that is clearly harming the community and people around it right
Well you where a bit harsh on the armour. Damn I would be pretty happy to survive most of those ap rounds at that range. Nice video.

@@imgoingberserk5918 I know. I'm just making a joke that GeneralSam made about Tarkov. I enjoy it I just like poking fun at it.
The guys from the CSN FSB, who actually come to search houses in the mountain villages of the Caucasus, prefer steel and titanium. Until now, Altyns and Tig are passed on as samurai swords of a warrior setting off on a mission. There is a certain distrust of modern "plastic" helmets and ceramics, at least among those fighters who have been shot by AK. In addition, the Defender's groin is sometimes also reinforced with a steel plate, which soldiers purchase separately.
Respectable bravery and dedication to tradition, but that's a shitty decision to make as a soldier lol.
Russians are huge boomers. Who could've guessed?
Titanium is not "obsolete" as an armor material by any means, in fact it has some advantages, look into ulbrichts helmets, they still make modern titanium helmets for elite German unit like SEK. The russian Altyn was actually copied from a Swedish design I believe. But yes they are obsolete now. And in any case many "modern" russian helmets are weak knockoffs of ops core that are typically gost 1 or gost 2 in which case the altyn may actually be better or at least offer a face shield.
@@rodiculous9464 titanium is dumb

Oxide: tests Russian armour kits.
Am I the only one seeing a pattern here?!!
Wait what, can you give a link? I can’t find anything about it
These weren't top of the line...
well Defender and Redut are actually the armor systems from 2000-2008. They are cool but already replaced with much modern armor systems that's offer better protection with equal or less weight.
That's not really news, I mean it happens fairly often a lot of suppliers get busted. Do you have the link? I am curious what the armor is. Probably 6b45 I heard they don't like when current gen stuff gets out.
not to be that guy but the stolen armours and kits are army ratnik kits so oxide's all good
Worth da DHS investigation.
I got really confused when you said it's 24° and snowing. But then I remembered, that you guys measuring stuff in eaglescreams per footballfield and stuff...

2:43 "did I close that squad window?"
Why don’t they use Kevlar and literally wrap the plate with a few layers like cling film. Then it would cover the front sides and back and prevent a lot of spall
You can they make spall liner you can place infront of a steel plate thats made of Kevlar. Would be cool to have a steel plate wrapped with it though. Might steal your idea man lmao
The Bagary does this, future test, you'll see!
@@forrestallen9354 I’d be interested to know the results!
915 team, a russian gear reviewer did this, he bought soft armor and just wrapped it around a steel plate and taped it up and it worked to stop the spall. Adds a lot of thiccness tho

Awesome video. That API throwing a fireball :O Thank you again for the opportunity to help you with this!
Funny how the defender is "heavier" than most plate carriers now and yet we still use out awesome 36 pound IOTV. Amazing work DoD.
To be fair, the IOTV is only 36 pounds if fully equipped with the additional armor. With just the vest, front and back plates, it's much less.
And if photos are anything to go off of, most soldiers didn't bother with the additional armor. Most of the time it was just the vest and groint
protector.

These armor and helmet tests are neat to watch, thanks for another great vid.
Neat to see. Honestly I never knew defenders were actually steel plates. I thought it was just aramid/ceramic. Good to see these armor reviews

the production of the video is amazing! i really liked it
This isn't spalling, this is splash. Spalling is fragments of the armor itself coming off the back face. Either way, I have thought about this problem and I think a decent solution would be to take some hardfacing welding rod compatible with w/e manganese steel alloy that is used (in the case of AR500 and similar) and laying a bead around the edge of the strike face, making a lip that would theoretically deflect splash away from the wearer. I doubt it would be measurably detrimental to the plate. It's something I'd like to try out.
The term spalling and splash have really been combined into the same thing when you look at the common language. Nobody calls the extra aramid anti splash.
@@Oxide_does_his_best Just because the colloquial term is the colloquial term doesn't make it right.
@@SuperAWaC I can only care about so much :/

i am really glad that i have found yput channel, really good work!
Holy shit this is awesome m8 these vids just keep getting better
Gets 3 hits in the same spot - oh after 3 hits in the same spot it started spalling - yeah, ceramics after 3 shots dont spall - 3rd shot just goes through... the 2nd plate on your back... and hits someone behind you. I am really NOT a fan of steel plates (not only cause of spalling/fragmentation but also cause of ricochates) Redut-m worked very well. Really impressed.
It really is the best way to do it.
How would a defender with ceramic instead of steel plates fare against multiple shots? As a large anti-terrorism/military police vest, I would assume it was expected to go up against repeated pistol and assault rifle rounds instead of the larger rifle rounds. The spalling on the 5.56 rounds wasn't bad and only happened after a few rounds. Would a ceramic plate hold up to several rounds as well?
These are just assumptions though, I have very little knowledge of modern armour. I only specialize in historical late medieval armour.
The 556 spall was bad, there shouldn't be any spall at all. If that stuff is digging into your skin you notice. The redut I've seen has a different plate bag that uses a single monolithic ceramic plate.
@@Oxide_does_his_best I didn't notice any spall on the first few shots though. After those shots the spalling did seem pretty bad, but not (immediately) fatal. Maybe in the context of police raids and counter-terrorism they saw the spalling as an acceptable tradeoff for stopping the bullets. The spalling could be lifethreatening, but shouldn't be a problem with first aid. Most firefights they're expected to go into are much shorter than those fought in warzones, and with medical aid on standby. I think they accepted the risk of spalling in return for being able to stop multiple hits.
@@joost1120 you know most modern ceramic plates can take multiple hits right?
@@conorfoster2337 The Defender is pretty old though. I'm pretty sure most ceramic plates from the 2000s weren't that durable.
@@joost1120 Not true, US troops were using multi-hit capable ceramic plates back in the early 90s in Somalia. They didn't see wide spread adoption until the early 2000s and the war on terror, though, so it's entirely possible Russia didn't have the capability to produce or buy them.
Gotta love the Squad menu theme in background :D
Thanks for pointing out Huffman Range, his militech videos helped me in figuring out where to source cheapass Level 3 helmets that sorta work. lol
Great video as always
This channel is a gem. Very unique to other gun and gear channels. Very cool.
The little Kommandostore ad @3:13 was pretty wicked looking I gotta say
Thank you for the content you create, and those that aid you in the process. Now that the US is looking into the NGSW program it'd really suck if they don't go through with it, knowing how m855a1 does against plates like this.
I’m not debating the usefulness of the new NGSW program, M855A1 does what its supposed to do. No one short of special forces on either side could field true armor penetrating ammunitions to all of their troops.
The thing is this lodaut is outdated and is not in use by russians anymore
That 30.06 API round was just beautiful

You can, just buy it as "airsoft gear" Works in Germany, but havent tried importing the plates, just the vests.
Also there are a couple in circulation in the EU with plates which got in before the Krim sanctions.
Well and you just could go repro if you just want the vest
Neotokyo music
Ceramic breaks after a few hits, steel plates can keep you in the fight for an extremely long time so long as the shrapnel doesn't hit anything vital. A good solution to the issue with these plate carries would be kevlar sleeves maybe? Kind of like that weird chain mail arms and strap middle armor add on for plate armor in the medieval days. I forgot the name of it but shadiversity showed it on screen in one of his videos. Added weight, sure but, at least the rigs would hold up in combat for extreme fights.
Holy crap that flame in the intro was huge
Would you be willing to test ar500, to show how dangerous spall really is, if someone bought the plates for you?
@Gost-5 because steel plates you'd buy don't have aramid fibers woven around,so it'll be even worse. It'll also be conversly more realistic and he could also test it against a 20 inch ar and find out if 5.56 ball can pen ar500. These, while accurately demonstrating spall, don't perfectly recrearte what you'd get from ar500 and there's visulization for the damage caused by spalling.
@@saintpeddlesworth2706 plenty of videos out there testing ar500
@@saintpeddlesworth2706 Clearly you dont know much about ar500. They literally have a spawling coat that comes on the plate and its probably better than the defender 2.
@@mr.stankers5967 Ar500 uses a truck bed liner as their "spall protection" paintjob. Not only does it add a shit ton more weight but it's largely ineffective after being hit once or twice, frequently just peeling right off. Never use Ar500.

This channel is now starting to seem like a professional tv show with adverts and stuff.

Thnx, waiting for 6b45 armor test
Was wondering if this vest and plates could be used with some sort of anti spalling or ceramic plates but seeing how hard it is to even find the regular plates idek if I should try
The Oxide voice was so low, so I almost expected USEC1 voiceline like: "Just let us pass and none gets hurt!"
Damn the Squad OST really hit

Destroying a found-in-raid only vest :(
I know it isn’t Russian, but perhaps you could do a review on the German police vest sold by KommandoStore, I’d also be interested in where to find the actual armor for it because I got the vest with no plates in it from the Bundesball
Im just watching some tarkov videos and the next video is this, great yt algorithm
mmm that sweet sweet neotokyo OST
Cool video
So what kind of steel is that? To shear off the tip of an M2AP, it would have to be above the 700 or so Brinell hardness of the AP core, wouldnt it?
finally someone test plates to failure. we never get to see how many rounds armor can actually take.
“music to be added later” pain
Mans just turned on the squad music and I’m on my phone so I just thought that squad was open lol
If you had a frag suit under it, would that be enough to prevent injury from the spawl?
Your blessed buddy. You have alot of good freinds and good times... ✌🤣
where on earth did you find these plates i cant find them anywhere
lol I heard the squad theme in there somewhere
How do you get thease plates? I've looked and for the life of me I can't find anything but replicas.
the steel with soft armor aramid backing actually made it great at stopping even steel AP rounds. but the fragmentation (what people call spalling) is unacceptable like you said since we now have easily accessible affordable ceramic plate armor which is much lighter weight.
