    Seriously the 50GM is one of the best if not the best lens for Sony E, and definitely worth every penny for it. I'll take this instead of the 35GM anyday, and it makes a good trio along with 24GM and 135GM.

      100% 35mm & 85mm are too mainstream. Yes they are classic which is why I use them for analog cameras. Although I prefer as different of a look as I can. My line up is 20mm 1.4, 12-24 2.8, 50 1.2, 105mm 1.4, 200 f/2, A7RV

      Agreed. This video doesn't do it justice. It's incredibly sharp at 1.2. It handles back lit subjects so well. Has a lovely lens flare too which I was really surprised about.

      Exactly. I have the 35 GM & the distortion is bad. The 50mm 1.2 is the sweet spot along with my 135mm GM 😎

  • @robainscough

    I recently purchased this lens for my Sony A7RV. I don't pretend to be a professional photography (as in do it for a living), but what I was looking for in this lens that your video didn't touch on at all ... that would be low light situations. IMHO, this lens puts and end to flash photography and need for studio lighting ... it works beautifully with natural lighting. I have a couple of other lens from Sony 70-200mm GM II 2.8 and 24-70mm GM II 2.8 ... both excellent but the Sony 50mm 1.2 GM really excels in low light (both video and stills). If you want that natural lighting, the 1.2 is best option. The 50mm 1.2 goes everywhere with me any time of day or night. Another topic you didn't cover is the Auto Focus, it's incredibly fast and accurate and superb with video.

      @michelecintramika8482 7 месяцев назад +1

      From your comment, it seems to me that you don't master a flash. It is completely possible to take natural photos with flash. You just need to know where to position the light. So, no matter what lens you have, depending on what you want, the flash is essential. Now, if you're a point-and-shoot type, you don't need a flash. I use it for hobbies and I always have a flash with me. because I like playing with light even during the day.

    • @robainscough
      @robainscough 7 месяцев назад

      @@michelecintramika8482 I guess we disagree, I prefer natural light from a scene, not artificial. I will use studio lighting inside when my goals are very specific like portraits or macro. I'd rather go high ISO and remove noise post.

    • @michelecintramika8482
      @michelecintramika8482 7 месяцев назад

      @@robainscough Knowing how to use the flash correctly, it looks natural. The flash helps to add contrast and volume to the image. But you need to know how to use it correctly.

    The first two points on why to *not* get the lens are so important! I use the Nikon Z system, and both points apply there too. In particular, "Invest in your strengths." Mitch does best with 35 or 24mm, I do best with 85 or 105mm, so it seems that neither of us needs to spend the money for the 50mm f/1.2, especially since my 50mm f/1.2 option is 350kg and Mitch's has strong focus breathing. I'll stick with adapted 50mm options and wait for a Nikon 85mm f/1.2S or even better, a 105mm f/1.2S!

    I still prefer the 50F1.2 to the 50F1.4 not only for the smoother Bokeh but for it's better quality (sharpness, lens flare, etc .).
    One question: Why do you have so much headroom in almost everyone of your vertical fotos? If you Go a little bit closer to your subject an tilt the camera more down, the composition gets better and the background even more blurred...

    This isn't for the begginers because of it's premium price but because begginers MUST start with a standard zoom to figure out the sort of focal lenght suits their needs the best. Then, it might be a good time to jump on primes.

    • @MitchLally
      @MitchLally  Год назад +5

      I disagree, zooms I find do the opposite because they can be any focal length in the range it doesn’t force you to think in any one particular field of view. My first lens after the kit lens was a prime and I wish I got it first because it taught me so much about how and why field of view matters.

    • @piotrgraniszewski8544

      I started out with 35mm APS-C. Only after I learned (eq.) 28, 50 and 105+, I got my hands on a standard 28-70 zoom lens. I love both ends of the range to death. Having prior experience with primes is crucial in order to know what you're doing with zooms.

    I really like the 50mm focal length and have started off a lot of my photos with the EF 50mm f/1.4. I tried using my dad's 50mm f/1.2 and it was mainly because I wanted to see how much better it was at low light. To be honest it didn't really help very much, in fact the wider aperture made it a lot harder to actually catch focus since that margin of error is thinner for focus. It's definitely a stills first kind of lens, if you want a lens for video you might want to look into cinema lenses. I think any f/1.2 prime lens out there is more so for photographers that are looking for that last 10% in quality for stills.

    Digidirect preorder is like click bait. They are genuine business but their business model of not telling customer stock level online or provide an eta for delivery but charge full amount when preorder is doubtable. I waited one month for Canon 16mm rf, some people waited 3 months for Sony lens rebate specials, so much so that when they were shipped, it has passed the deadline of Sony official rebate.

    1.2 GM renders color different from other Sony lenses, it has less boring accuracy and more personality. I would put it next to Nikon 105 or Leica Summilux 50. Yes, it’s pricier and heavier than the new f1,4, but it’s a definitely a wonderful lens that if you already have one, keep it. If you don’t, check out the new 1.4 first, it may be good enough for you.

      Why? because it doesn't validate your purchasing decisions? People are so self centred when it comes to this stuff - sometimes it takes months to know if you enjoy using something and a lot of the time you have no idea if it works for you and your style or not. People base so much of their opinions on what others say and rarely form their own opinions so when I hear somebody doesn't like something and they've actually given good reasons and you can tell they've really properly given it a chance I find it refreshing. There are so many trite narratives on youtube nowadays (eg. "fuji cameras inspire me to take photos") that I'm just sick of hearing the same crap parroted over and over. Sounds like you come to RUclips to hear what you want to hear and not the truth.

    A paying customer would not see the difference between an a 50/1.2 f1.4 and f2. It is not worth the price tag.
    Sharpness is also not an issue. Most lenses are sharp enough. I have sharp lenses that are too sharp for my taste and I need to soften the image.
    I downgraded from f1.4 to f2 lenses, except for the 85mm. The 85 is still an f1.4. The f2 lenses are nice and very satisfying. People will not notice. However, many photographers need to show off.
