Yes f1.4 GM is a great lens. I got mine this morning. Prefer to f1.2 on size, cost grounds and family similarity to 20, 35, 35. A fast well balanced team with standard 67mm filter thread.
Hi mate, i love, love your videos. May I know what kind of SD card do you use or would you recommend for the sony ZV-E1? im not sure if i should buy 128GB or 256GB and what speed should they be. Thanks
Great review as usual Jason, but especially at everyone's favorite store B&H Photo and video, in the US the 50mm 1.2gm is $1998.00 and the 50mm 1.4gm will be $1298.00, so this price isn't even close at a price difference of $700. The Sony 35mm f1.4gm is actually $100 more so if you really, really, really don't need 1.2, I say stay with the 1.4, which is where I have my focus on. I do have the Sigma 35mm F1.2 and shooting at 1.2 for photography on that lens is spectacular because it is sharp wide open. Sony is actually killing the game when it comes to lenses and one of my absolute favorites in my kit is the 135mm f1.8gm, it really is my favorite lens.
@@JasonMorrisphotocinemadude! Just wanted to say you are absolutely crushing these videos, amazing production value!!! I can tell the amount of work you put in. Cheers!
I just tested this 50mm 1.4 GM using a Megadap against Nikon's Z 50mm 1.8, and was shocked that the Z was a tad sharper for less than half the price. Still, amazing lenses
Thanks, Jason, good review. Yes it's a dilemma which to pick (albeit a nice one). I'm strongly leaning to the f1.4 GM. I'm lucky that I can afford either, but feel more compact form is a better trade off and likely means it will get used more often. I also own the sister GM primes 24mm f1.4 and 35mm f1.4 so similar size and filter threads is also a good reason to pick the 1.4 variant.
This lens has convinced me to sell my 24-70 GM ii and get this and a 24mm 1.4 GM. With apsc mode I can get 36mm and 75mm which is good enough for me, but the increased sharpness and contrast and bokeh of the GM primes is something the latest Sony GM zooms can’t keep up with. I have the 14mm GM and had the 35 GM, and it’s just a better looking image.
I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum: If I had a 24-70 GM II I would let go of my 24mm GM. Don't get me wrong, great lens but the convinience of having just one lens personally far outweighs the tiny loss in sharpness. The 24-70 GM II is very sharp for my needs and to be honest all modern lenses are very sharp. So sharp that sometimes it makes tweaking portraits a pain (I'm looking at you Sony 90mm F2.8 macro!) Are you more into video or photography?
@@lucasliaskos it is a sharp lens, but the direction I’m going I want more bokeh, and low light ability. I’m going to be making a lot more video content locked off on a tripod around New York City, getting footage to sell as stock footage where the competition is stiff and the 24-70’s 2.8 isn’t quite enough, and a lot less of the event coverage that I’ve been doing with zoom lenses. This light weight 50 GM makes it all possible, I hate carrying heavy lenses, and if given a choice for nearly the same price, I’d choose the 24-70 over the 50mm 1.2, but this new lens opens up a lightweight kit of uniform GM primes that I can see myself bringing everywhere and not regretting it.
I just like how Sony is making all their 1.4GM lenses the same size much like how Panasonic did with their F1.8 prime lenses. I hope Canon will make their primes similar as well. As of now, I just hope Canon has more wide angle prime lenses.
The better question is: Why buy the 50mm F1.2 GM? In all the blind comparisons I've seen done between the two professional photographers cannot tell the difference between 1.4 and 1.2 That means you're largely paying another 600-700 dollars far additional mass and volume to the lens. The F1.4 gets you 95% of the F1.2's performance for much less. In this case, get the smaller, lighter, cheaper lens. Hell, I'd recommend the Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG DN as well, it's just bulkier and heavier than the Sony counterpart.
I dont understand the release of this new lens. Iris lock & lighter design? Sounds like sony is going to have two type of g master lens. 1.4 series and 1.2 series like old canon lens. Hope they don’t mess it up their reputation..
I can see where you are coming from. I can see why they did this. Having an f1.4 range isn’t a bad idea specially being a cheaper price than the f1.2 range and smaller
The 67mm filter is definitely a PRO to the 1.4 I haven't heard other people mention. I do not have time to buy another Nisi Vari ND for a weird 72mm thread so I just have a 82mm and 67mm. The linear manual focusing is attractive. Size is a big factor for me so I'm not in a rush to upgrade from my Zeiss 55mm 1.8. That extra 5mm produces pretty similar bokeh to 1.2 as shown on YT so A Cam interviews and the size is like a no brainer when traveling. 1.2 = $1999 / 1.4 = $1298 / 1.8 = $550 used.
This is the lens I've been waiting for. My 50mm has been the Sigma Art f1.4 for a long time now, and although it's a great lens I'm ready to upgrade. I've been very close to pulling the trigger on the GM f1.2 so many times, but the cost always made me hesitate. I just can't justify the cost when the Sigma is honestly giving me everything I need. The new GM f1.4 is perfect, in both price and size. I already have the 24mm and 35mm GM lenses, and this new 50mm looks like it fits perfectly alongside those. So while it is somewhat redundant, I'm already head over heels for this lens.
@@fabianj6008 Sony has slightly better IQ, probably better AF and it's smaller. Sigma DG DN Art is very similar. Sigma Art (the old one) has bad AF, it's big, not as sharp in the corners and lots of fringing. However Sony is more expensive by about 500$.
