its just these type people who will hype up anything thats on netflix but then never go back and watch it again when the hype is dead. genuinely think if this movie just was made on any other platform or just released in theaters no one would really care
I would not say that movie has “nuance” it’s very on the nose and it’s supposed to be. I went into the movie expecting a comedy and that’s what I got :)
@@Outliers4Life it’s not just netflix, it’s also the cast. people hyped this movie bc it had meryl streep, jennifer lawrence, leo dicaprio, jonah hill, timothee…. but without the cast.. it wouldn’t make noise. it’s so freaking flat. netflix spent so much on the cast and literally zero thought went into the actual movie
Same, it missed the mark on every part except acting, for me (music, scenario, cinematography, editing, humour etc) and it seems very rushed. I was disappointed the same way with Bird Box minus the acting part lol
I honestly thought Get Back is near to revolutionary, not only in the Beatles history and in the music documentary space, but also in the way we perceive bands, the creative process, and musicians' lives and rumors created by news and fans. It was so raw and intimate, it almost felt like it was transporting me there. Besides its a monumental achievement the image and sound processing done by Peter Jackson and his team! I loved it! Billy Crystal at his best. Not a huge Meg Ryan fan, but she was great in this. And of course Carrie Fisher as part of the best friend couple….chef’s kiss.

I hated it but surprising amount of people which opinions i respect really loved it. Can't wait to hear it discussed on Sardonicast, I know they'll hate it :D
Loved it. Do NOT expect to see anything like M1-3, but be open to an emotional story with themes about the illusion of binaries and how they use them against us as a method of control. There are some technical and pacing issues, but the themes are just beautiful.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Don’t Look Up. I can already tell we’ll disagree… heavily… but that is actually what makes me so excited to hear what you took home from that film.
One movie that I've been thinking about a lot for the past 3 weeks was 'Gummo'. I can't describe the feelings i got when watching it but i feel like it's going have an influence in my filmmaking career.
on a whim I watched Asakusa Kid after seeing it pop up on my netflix notifications. I didn't expect anything going in, all I knew was its about this famous comedian in Japan but I was surprised. I'd recommend checking it out.
my december favorites: 1. c'mon c'mon 2. phantom thread ( rewatch. this movie is the greatest ) 3. the shape of water 4. the lost daughter 5. marriage story ( rewatch. cuss yeah )
I’m still split on Matrix 4…not because of all the negative reactions cause I actually had fun with it. And I do appreciate some of the messages. But I can’t get over certain things - in particular something to do with flying😅 - however, if this is the last Matrix movie we get I’m not mad about it.
I watched When Harry met Sally and the lost daughter too! When Harry met Sally is a new years movie imo so I like to watch it round that time of the year and it is sweet and Sally does deserve better. The Lost Daughter, I was blinded by how much I love Olivia Colman and Dakota Johnson
what i watched in december (though it’s not a lot because i was busy with school): pig (dir. michael sarnoski): 4/5 the power of the dog (dir. jane campion): 4.5/5 another round (dir. thomas vinterberg): 3/5 spencer (dir. pablo larrain): 4.5/5
Glad at least someone else saw The Rescue. If you think Free Solo was crazy you ain't seen nothing yet. My favorite movie this year and hopefully another Oscar for Elisabeth Chai and Jimmy Chin.
Tbh I really liked dont look up, I thought it did everything it set out to do and it’s commentary was pretty salient. However, I will say some of it was pretty heavy handed and the star studded cast was pretty jarring and honestly took me out of it a bit.
if you want 'dont look up' without the barrage of celebrities watch 'seeking a friend for the end of the world'. its about a decade old, but one of my favourite movies of all time, and it gets it's message across in a much subtler way
It would be nice if there was a list of the movies in the description. I always come back to these videos when I am looking for something to watch and I don't quite remember the name of one of the movies Karsten mentioned.
if you think keanu is good in the matrix, you absolutely HAVE to see him star alongside river phoenix in my own private idaho. i’d argue that performance, and movie, is better, which is saying a lot.
Princess Mononoke is my favorite animated movie ever (and also probably my favorite movie overall), what a perfect piece of cinema. Gonna probably watch Matrix Resurrections next week, some reviewers I trust said it's a great movie, albeit not what you would expect from a Matrix movie.
Karsten’s Letterboxd review of Don’t Look Up honestly upset me. I’m not gonna stop following him, I do usually like his reviews, but that information felt notable.
I think the last hour of network not going anywhere is a big point of the film. Despite everything that Howard does in the story, none of his actions save world, they actually just get him killed on television. I do think Max has an interesting arc though.
Yes network is an all time acting tour de force! One of the greatest films of all time not sure why karsten never really talks about acting only very briefly.
Honestly devastated to find out that my one great film idea- reverse clue -was already done by Alfred Hitchcock. Even one of his weaker one is so daunting
Karsten I’m totally with on the matrix resurrections. It’s nowhere near the first two movies but I liked it for what it was. Definitely liked it more than revolutions(even tho I also liked that movie too) but yea don’t listen to the haters man!
What I watched this month: Uncut Gems-5/5 Django (Original)-4.3/5 Clockwork Orange(rewatch)-5/5 Star Wars: ESB (rewatch)-4/5 The Incredibles(rewatch)-4.7/5 Shang-Chi: LOFTR-3.2/5 Spider-Man: No Way Home-5/5 Parasite-5/5 Judas & the black messiah-4.6/5 House of Gucci-4.1/5 Licorice Pizza-3/5 Boogie Nights-4.4/5 Hotel Rwanda (Rewatch)-4.2/5 Babel-3/5
I'm not really into like Romance movies. but I decided to watch Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight and those were all very very good. Really surprised by how much I enjoyed them. But if you liked Princess Mononoke, you should watch The Tale of Princess Kaguya
I loved House of Gucci, the fact that I had fun watching it despite its run time is a win to me, despite the parts where it kind of flops. I understand why some people wouldn't like it though.
You gotta watch Night Moves (1975), the one with Gene Hackman. It's got those Long Goodbye vibes that you love, very quirky offbeat noir with a pretty groovy laid back 70's feeling.
man, i just watched an interview with one of the australian doctors on the rescue mission (the soccer team one) and boy oh boy...idk if i could watch the doco after watching the interview
The first Matrix might be one of the best films ever made. I personally enjoy Reloaded and Revolutions equally, but for different reasons, probably give them both a 4/5, or a 3.5/5 if i was feeling really critical.
The Lighthouse(4/5) Psycho 1960(RW 4/5) Call Me by Your Name(4.5) Shoplifters(4.5) Roma(5/5) Sicario(5/5) Irishman(5/5) Spiderman No Way Home(4.5) Moneyball(5/5) Back to the Future(4.5)
I loved licorice pizza definitely worth a rewatch in the future for me some funny parts but Punk Drunk Love is definitely my fave PTA film. Don’t look up was fun/funny to watch it was good but not great but not bad. There’s serval things to be said about that movie so I’m very interested to see your Don’t Look Up video. Ps i need to watch TITANE
After I watch any movie, I’m always wondering what your opinion is because your opinion might be one of the most different and interesting out there and I love that about this channel. You need to make some movies!
I'm glad someone else agrees that Princess Mononoke is their favourite Miyazaki film. No offense to Spirited Away fans, that film is fantastic, but to me Princess Mononoke just hits every high so perfectly and is also somehow one of my favourite comfort movies despite the very serious themes and messages.
My silly little list : - Scooby-Doo : The Movie (9/10) - Freud, secret passion (I loved the main actor's performance) - West Side Story (2021) (silly acting, shallow character building, nice dancing) - Knives out (very fun) - Été 85 - Les Tuches 4 (a bit corny, I was kinda disapointed) - No country for old men (perfection) - God's own country (actual tears, it was so sweet) - Dolor y gloria (I was expecting a lot more, it wasn't as life-changing as I thought it would be, mostly because of the aesthetic aspect that sometimes feels a bit rushed and cheap, still very moving, I cried) - I'm thinking of ending things (who let this movie happen, it was so bad) - Don't look up. (I loved it, everything about it was great, especially the actors)
I just watched Don't Look Up last night and yeah not the best movie, very meh, but at the end I burst out in panicked tears and turned to my friend and said "oh my god we are all going to die" as I realized even tho we don't have a giant rock ready to crash into us, if we did, that's how it would turn out. Im stuck now in a depressive panic as I realize the world is beyond repair, everyone wants to kill each other and I'm most likely not going to live a very long life....
@@jikesbadoodle3580 yeah. I have no idea why it caused that. I don't think most people are crying at the end of a comedy movie. It's more of just the topic that did it rather than the movie it's self :,D
@@knelldesparios53 well I can relate, it had the same effect on me, and that’s one reason I think it is so good. We are all aware of the climat crisis, but get numb to the topic over time, this movie tried to convey a sense of urgency and finessed it like no other movie can do for me, maybe even stronger then a documentary about the actual topic And honestly I found it also a hilarious movie, but I get if some people don’t like the comedic style, and the actors were all so great and in unusual roles and I’m also a big fan of every one of them escpecially DiCaprio and chalamet So I loved it all, but that’s often not enough with a movie, but the power of conveying urgency they were able to achieve is really phenomenal I honestly think it might win best picture this year and I’m fine with people not liking it, I sometimes just don’t get why
@@jikesbadoodle3580 I guess maybe it's because some of the comedy missed for me. I found the presidents son to be annoying more than anything and was thrown off as to why Ariana needed to be in it. But I watched Greta's doc about climate before it (very boring but very depressing) and realized, the government reaction in the real world is the same in this movie. They definitely got that right. I guess you're right. The movie did handle the topic actually well... just some cringy stuff got slightly in the way.
Princess Mononoke is a gem. I don't know if you're into series, specially old ones, but you should watch Space: 1999. It's an old series, very goofy sometimes, but it grows into you.
Karsten you gotta widen your Ghibli scope beyond Miyazaki! It hurts to see that Whisper of the Heart and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya aren't even on your letterboxd watchlist :(
if we’re talking december 2021, i gotta know, what’d you watch?
I watched the Meg Ryan Nora Ephron Rom Com trilogy and it was great. I also watched Don't Look Up and really liked it.

The Power of the Dog had me floored
I still feel Benedict Cumberbatches presence and it's been 2 days since I watched it
Karsten is too cool for Network
Karsten I’m totally with on the matrix resurrections. It’s nowhere near the first two movies but I liked it for what it was. Definitely liked it more than revolutions(even tho I also liked that movie too) but yea don’t listen to the haters man!
summer of soul is so awesome
Highlight of my montthhhh
I can’t believe you’d never seen princess mononoke. Still not my fav Miyazaki but up there for sure
karsten low-key going for the Zeffirelli look
I love Network been one of my favorite movies since I was a kid. Very nostalgic for me

I'm not really into like Romance movies. but I decided to watch Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight and those were all very very good. Really surprised by how much I enjoyed them.
But if you liked Princess Mononoke, you should watch The Tale of Princess Kaguya
Thank god someone else enjoyed the Matrix Resurrections like I did. Completely encapsulated my thoughts on the movie
I fully agree with what you had to say about Matrix Resurrections. Thanks for articulating it like that!
You shoild checkout grave of the fireflies. Its by miyazaki's best friend isao takahata. Also tale of princess kaguya by him.
man, i just watched an interview with one of the australian doctors on the rescue mission (the soccer team one) and boy oh boy...idk if i could watch the doco after watching the interview
I watch the matrix for the first time in November and God I fucking love it
Just saw Antz this month and it was worth it.
Hey, you should watch Howl's moving castle. it's not intense as Princess Mononoke, but it's a beautiful story and i really think you would like it
Hey ik I'm hella late but I'm glad u watched the Rescue.
Karsten “These Lads” Runquist
The way me and karsten are gonna fight when that don’t look up video drops 😔
Couldn't disagree more about "Network" 🙁 It's an amazing film!
In december I saw:
Eighth Grade
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Heat
Spiderman No Way Home
Ray
Ratatouille
The Parent Trap
take a shot every time Karsten says lads
Karsten needs to start putting a link to the songs he's using in the background. I'm missing out on these jazz songs
You should try indian Film
Love from India
Glad you liked Resurrections, you call out the same points I love about it.
The first Matrix might be one of the best films ever made. I personally enjoy Reloaded and Revolutions equally, but for different reasons, probably give them both a 4/5, or a 3.5/5 if i was feeling really critical.
The Lighthouse(4/5)
Psycho 1960(RW 4/5)
Call Me by Your Name(4.5)
Shoplifters(4.5)
Roma(5/5)
Sicario(5/5)
Irishman(5/5)
Spiderman No Way Home(4.5)
Moneyball(5/5)
Back to the Future(4.5)
damn the karststache is lookin mighty fine my man
Would really love to see some stand-alone reviews of Scary of Sixty-First and The Lost Daughter. Really interested to hear your thoughts.
So glad to see Summer of Soul on this list. More people need to see it!
My silly little list :
- Scooby-Doo : The Movie (9/10)
- Freud, secret passion (I loved the main actor's performance)
- West Side Story (2021) (silly acting, shallow character building, nice dancing)
- Knives out (very fun)
- Été 85
- Les Tuches 4 (a bit corny, I was kinda disapointed)
- No country for old men (perfection)
- God's own country (actual tears, it was so sweet)
- Dolor y gloria (I was expecting a lot more, it wasn't as life-changing as I thought it would be, mostly because of the aesthetic aspect that sometimes feels a bit rushed and cheap, still very moving, I cried)
- I'm thinking of ending things (who let this movie happen, it was so bad)
- Don't look up. (I loved it, everything about it was great, especially the actors)
I'm filled with an insatiable anger every time you say "Lads"
Okay, I'm gonna need a David Lynch ranked video. Let's make it happen!
And you think the movie is meh if it had this effect on you?
I thought it was also very funny, very entertaining and had such a great vibe
Welcome welcome
@@jikesbadoodle3580 yeah. I have no idea why it caused that. I don't think most people are crying at the end of a comedy movie. It's more of just the topic that did it rather than the movie it's self :,D
@@knelldesparios53 well I can relate, it had the same effect on me, and that’s one reason I think it is so good.
We are all aware of the climat crisis, but get numb to the topic over time, this movie tried to convey a sense of urgency and finessed it like no other movie can do for me, maybe even stronger then a documentary about the actual topic
And honestly I found it also a hilarious movie, but I get if some people don’t like the comedic style, and the actors were all so great and in unusual roles and I’m also a big fan of every one of them escpecially DiCaprio and chalamet
So I loved it all, but that’s often not enough with a movie, but the power of conveying urgency they were able to achieve is really phenomenal
I honestly think it might win best picture this year and I’m fine with people not liking it, I sometimes just don’t get why
It hurts to see that Whisper of the Heart and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya aren't even on your letterboxd watchlist :(
If you haven’t seen the wind rises by Miyazaki I highly recommend
Karsten, start you should start a Ken Russell deep dive. I wanna hear your take on his crazy films
