I got to see Napoleon Dynamite in Austin as a special QnA screening, and Napoleon, Pedro, and Uncle Rico were there in person, and afterwards I got to go on the stage and do a dance off in front of the crowd since I dressed as Napoleon along with everyone else who dressed as characters from the movie. I didn’t get to say much to the Jons but Efren was super nice and he shock my hand, and that made my week. They all seemed like really nice and cool people and even though I didn’t win any of the cool prizes they had for trivia or the dance off, it’s a movie memory I’ll forever cherish. The only thing was i wish I could’ve told them how much the film meant to me and how it inspired a young, shy middle schooler to do the dance for the talent show and win 1st place(the prize was just a $25 whataburger card, but that wasn’t important to me) likewise, I’ll forever love Napoleon Dynamite, gosh!

This month went by so quickly and so slowly at the same time. As I’m going over what I watched this month in my head for this comment, I’m thinking, “was that seriously less than a month ago?” But at the same time, August felt so much longer.
Anyway, I watched Bridesmaids for the first time - I’ve recently seen people discussing how comedy deserves to be taken more seriously as it takes just as much effort to come up with a story with good jokes as it does a heart-wrenching dramatic one and now that I think about it, Bridesmaids is a perfect example of a blend of exceptional humour and emotional depth. I love Kristen Wiig lol
I was feeling nostalgic so I watched a few Robin Williams and Lindsay Lohan movies from the '90s and '00s. Mrs. Doubtfire was as wonderful as ever and you know, right as I clicked “Play” on Flubber, for some reason, I suddenly thought I was setting myself to be quite bored at best and it would be one of those childhood movies you rewatch as an adult and find they’re not nearly as good as you remember but no, it’s very enjoyable and
    (spoilurrrzzzz)
Weebo’s death makes me cri evry tim.
There’s something about these movies with these actors that’s so cosy and nostalgic, even if I didn’t watch all of them when I was younger. I rewatched The Parent Trap for the first time since I was about ten, then Freaky Friday and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen for the first time and of course I rewatched Mean Girls. I will confess I had never seen Mean Girls in its entirety a year ago but since November, I’ve literally watched it three times lol (also the musical movie, which, yeah, it isn’t as good but it’s nowhere near awful!).
And lastly, I finished watching every Pixar movie, which I started doing in June and then just kind of forgot about but when I saw Inside Out 2 was coming to Disney+, I decided to continue doing that (and I’m gonna find time to watch Inside Out 2 again as soon as I can, I’m very excited). I also watched the shorts and specials and all that. There are some I hadn’t seen before, including a lot from the Sparkshorts series, which are very good. As for the movies themselves, I actually hadn’t seen Luca and Lightyear before. I loved Luca, it’s very, very cute and captures the feeling of a fun childhood summer perfectly and Lightyear... is also very fun. I was so surprised, it’s nothing like what most people say. It’s not gritty, it’s not boring, it just feels like a fun popcorn movie, as they say, with a heartwarming message and stellar (ha) animation. Yeah, the twist goes against canon but - with all due respect to Toy Story lore - idrc lolz. And GUYS, WOW, Onward is still soooo good, I’d literally put it in my top five Pixar movies, why do people not like it??!?? Aludbwkidj. I’m sorry, I just had to mention that one in particular because I’m consistently blown away every time I watch it and everyone seems to either overlook it or find it quite average.
    So yeah. That’s that.
Also why do the automated captions censor “moron”

    I saw…
Howl’s Moving Castle - 4/5 - Third time,l viewing, it is one of Miyazaki’s weaker films for me, but that really just means it’s great.
Transformers One - 4/5 - Shockingly good, but it grows better as it goes on.
Megalopolis - Okay, I have two ways to view it:
As an artistic vision: 4/5. I respect the dedication to get it made, and it clearly reeks of passion. But…
As a film by itself: 1/5. It so doesn’t commit to any idea it presents that it feels like chunks are missing, it feels artsy for the sake of it, and by the last ten minutes, I just started laughing. I couldn’t hold it in anymore. Just… I get what he was going for, that does not mean he achieved it.
And some other stuff I don’t remember

    My August and September watches;
The Boy and the Heron - 9/10 - _A beautiful movie about loss and acceptance with Miyazaki's trademark whimsy is an experience that I'll never forget. A bit convoluted at times but otherwise an excellent watch._
X-Men Origins: Wolverine - 3/10 - _Hilariously bad but oddly entertaining at the same time. A guilty pleasure lol._
X-Men: First Class - 8/10 - _A much needed soft reboot/prequel that plays out like a much better version of X-Men 1. The middle chunk of the movie gets a bit sluggish but the 3rd act is very good, probably the best 3rd act in an X-Men movie. Solid performances too especially from James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Kevin Bacon._
X-Men: Days of Future Past - 8.5/10 - _A great follow-up to First Class that connects the past and future versions of the characters culminating in a way that acts as a great closure to this franchise (which didn't end here sadly). The movie does have some obvious flaws and inconsistencies but overall it's one of if not the best X-Men movie out there._
The Wolverine - 7.5/10 - _The twist at the end was pretty bad which brings down an otherwise good movie._
X-Men: Apocalypse - 6/10 - _This movie feels like a bunch of scenes stitched together without any real direction. There are a few good scenes here which saves this movie from being a total disaster._
X-Men: Dark Pheonix - 4/10 - _Atleast Apocalypse was slightly entertaining, this movie is a snoozefest._
The New Mutants - 5/10 - _A few good spooky scenes but otherwise it's boring._
Logan - 9/10 - _There are very few comic book movies that leave such a lasting emotional impact on a viewer, Logan is one such movie. A breath of fresh air after so many mediocre entries._
Kill - 8/10 - _I love me some straightforward revenge thriller with lots of brutal kills and action. This may not be the best movie of the year but it sure was a satisfying yet kinda sad watch._
Spy x Family CODE: White - 8/10 - _To put it simply, if you enjoyed the show you're gonna enjoy this one too. Even if you've never watched the show it still works well as a standalone feature although context does help._
Delicious in Dungeon (Season 1) - 8.5/10 - _A really great fantasy anime with some of the best world building I've ever seen. Every part of the dungeon is so exquisitely well detailed that it feels like a real living breathing world. The main leads are all very likeable and the english dub is great. Can't recommend this show enough._
X-Men '97 (Season 1) - 9/10 - _I'm a bit late on this but I'm happy to say that this lived up to all the hype and expectations I had. The best part about this show is how well it develops almost every single character in a meaningful way and makes them all stand out to each other. On top of that, the 90s series isn't a required viewing to understand this show even tho it's a continuation. This honestly might just be the best piece of X-Men media (outside of the comics)._
    Well, that's it for me.

I feel like I’m only person who liked Joker 2 cause it was made to subvert expectations and to be a meta commentary on parasocial idol worship of how people wanted violent deranged individual get even crazier and not try to get better. Once he confessed in his crimes, everyone abandoned him. Musical numbers were great, and while Gaga was underutilized it was still fine, not terrible. Doesn’t deserve the hate train it got.

But if that was the case… why spend 200 million to a sequel of a divisive film while telling those who did like it to screw themselves?
Artisitic merit or not, that is a great example of Hollywood overspending. I’m saying this as someone who has no desire to see either (except to see if they’re that bad)

The Substance was definitely so gross, but so bonkers you just got to admire it. I still feel the story & themes too cliche, tho it does provoke people with that in your face approach. A good companion piece to the Ozempic trend.😅

I watched a couple of Robin Williams movies this month but not Dead Poets Society because I think it’s supposed to be quite sad? And I wasn’t really in the mood for that lol. I definitely will watch it one of these days, though, it’s been on my mind for a long time. And Top Gun: Maverick is sooo good!

@@rocco3605 dead poets society does have a sad part to it but there is a lot of joy in it too! As for top gun it’s not my usual sort of film but i recognise that it is a good film and I had fun with it!

@@niamhwelsh That’s good to know, thank you! ☺️ I was pretty sure that was the case but now I don’t think it’s, like, too heavy for me to absolutely need to be in a certain mood. And yeah, I think the reason why I preferred Top Gun: Maverick to the original Top Gun is that it felt like it was more focused on the emotional stakes and less on the technical jargon, which the original had a lot of and that’s not inherently bad but... I get kind of... not bored but lost, basically. :P
