Thank you for watching! :)
I cannot believe that in a year of Monkey Mondays and Mad Max you have somehow NOT watched the one Mad Max movie WITH a monkey
Just saw TV Glow and wow, it was nothing that I expected. I was anticipating just a bit of fun sci-fi horror but what I got was an allegory that was deeply personal to me.
From the moment they introduced The Pink Opaque I knew the director loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It only became more apparent the longer I watched because it’s in everything-the font used for the show, the themes, the language (big bad), the queer subtext-the plot is one big reference to the end of Buffy season 5 and the beginning of 6. They even named a character Tara. Then Amber Benson shows up for a cameo!
Buffy is such an important show to queer people. Willow and Tara were the first lesbians I saw on tv, the first gay people at all. TV Glow absolutely captured what it’s like to see yourself in a show, to see yourself really for the first time. But also how it feels to not get to see yourself fully realized or fully happy.
I could talk for hours about how right TV Glow got it, how wonderful it is to find shows like Buffy and just how painful it can be watching the characters you love try (and sometimes fail) to fight for a happy ending.
Imagine latching your personality to whatever you find, do better.

Evil Does Not Exist does count as a 2024 movie since international movies takes months to be distributed into American theaters.
For example, Perfect Days wasn’t released in the United States until early of this year.
American movies occasionally take their time to arrive in many european countries. Here in Portugal it's not as terrible as it used to be (i.e. a blockbuster movie coming out between three to six months after its original release), but there are instances nowadays that get downright ridiculous, and it's not just the holiday movies that are pushed to January because of the Oscar season. Dream Scenario will only come out in Portugal this week, after months of arriving to other markets drop by drop. It's an unique situation, for most A24 releases arrive shortly after their wide release in the US.
It wasn’t even distributed to Japanese theaters until this year, it was pretty much just at Venice for 2023. Perfect Days was shown in Germany and Japan, its home countries, in 2023 and probably had some limited screenings in the US for the Oscars, so I’d say it’s 2023 while Evil Does Not Exist is 2024.
I run into that issue too. For instance, "Am I Ok?" had its premiere on Max today, but it was actually made in 2022. I consider it a 2024 movie since it's being widely released now. Many movies, like "The Bikeriders," "The Last Stop in Yuma County," and "Hit Man," were made in 2023 but are getting their major releases in 2024, so I count them as 2024 movies too.
Working in a carehome, I look after this 1 resident who's favourite actor is Burt Lancaster. I've always thought that was a bit random but seeing your review of the Swimmer i'm tempted to see it myself and find out whether or not he's seen it too
Hoffman is so good in The Talented Mr. Ripley. "Tommy, how's the peeping? Tommy... how's the peeping?"
I hope we will get a video from you about I saw the TV glow, I just saw the movie and I would love to hear more of your thoughts about it, I love how different people find different and also the same meanings in that movie
Can't wait for your I Saw the TV Glow vid
You have to watch "The Last Dtop In Yuma County"
It’s actually so good. Jim Cummings is a talent, if you haven’t you should watch the stuff he’s written and directed. We talk about it a little on our monthly recap episode.
hard disagree with rating to Ripley netflix show over the movie. I felt the show didn't allow you to connect with Ripley at all whereas in the film, when dicky is laying into tom on the boat you want to die inside. the movie imo makes you feel so guilty as Tom goes along given how far you can connect to him whereas the netflix version made me feel nothing for him.
yeah hes so wrong about ripley
The Talented Mr. Ripley is such an alluring movie. Jude Law's Dickie is so charming that you could see how one would become infatuated with Dickie's persona and lifestyle. And Matt Damon's Tom is seemingly easygoing and friendly in a way that disarms any initial suspicions you might have about him, and you can see that this is how Tom gets away with conning people. None of this is in Ripley because Ripley takes a much colder approach, and it leaves me wondering why anyone would let Andrew Scott's Tom into their home in the first place when he's so stilted and awkward when they meet.
Full kinds of kindness video review when, Kursten ?
Alright! Here's what I watched,
Mad Max: Fury Road (10/10) - _After going through such a hellish production George Miller was able to craft what is hands down one of the best action movies of all time. The sheer amount of jaw dropping stunts and breathtaking cinematography is awe inspiring to say the least. Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy were excellent considering the behind the scenes feud they went through during production. Fury Road also does visual storytelling better than almost any action movie I've ever seen with underlying themes of trust, hope and redemption. It's truly a perfect movie in every regard._
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (9/10) - _My expectations were through the roof with this one and I'm happy to say that it was amazing. I love when a sequel/prequel forges it's own path and doesn't try to imitate it's predecessor, Furiosa is not Fury Road 2.0 and that's exactly why it works. Its slower paced, it's more personal, it takes its time with the world building all while having brilliant action set pieces that the franchise is known for. Furiosa made me way more invested in the world of Mad Max than any movie prior to this, all while giving that 'build-up' that made Fury Road even better on a re-watch. This honestly is my favorite movie of the year so far._
Speed (9/10) - _Fury Road made me wanna watch more adrenaline pumping action flicks and I finally got around watching this classic. One of my pet peeves is when a movie takes place in a moving vehicle and in the case of Speed, a bus that will explode if it goes below 50. Such a simple yet brilliant concept for an action movie and director Jan de Bont executed it perfectly. The moving vehicle creates a constant state of urgency, there's no time to sit and think which makes for an 'edge of your seat' kinda experience. The performances are also really solid all around and although there may be flaws with the technical aspects of the movie but no doubt it's a great watch and one of my favorite 90s action classic._
Mad Max: Fury Road, Black and Chrome version (N/A) - _Its basically the same movie just in b&w. I'd definitely recommend watching it as it provides a different viewing experience. Although I still prefer the coloured version._
Solo Leveling, Season 1 (7.5/10) - _Good power fantasy with decent characters and a great soundtrack. Surprisingly also has a good amount of blood._
Well that's it lol.
There is also an Iranian movie called "There is no evil" which is just great. you should check it out.
Where's that one student film you logged on Letterboxd?

4:30 As someone who recently watched War for the planet of the apes last month, I gotta disagree, its the best in the franchise. The cinematography and score feel truly realized compared to dawn. How dark the film can get given its themes and settings is jaw dropping and emotional. Yes, I feel they spent too much time in the camp, but it was needed to push Casear away from his vengeance and become truly selfless. 9/10 easy.
I couldn’t disagree more with your take on the ripleys. andrew scott’s performance is so unnerving that i could never buy that dickie would keep him around. Damon’s performance is so unsuspecting that it’s unsettling.
I loved the hour of kingdom of the planet of the apes I watched. Then I fell asleep.
Can’t believe you would spoil The Musician Monkey like that, lost all respect for you Karsten
If you talk about I Saw The Tv Glow in the future I really hope you at least acknowledge the role that gender and gender dysphoria has in the movie. While the theme of nostalgia and attachment to media are also very prominent and worth discussing I'd love to hear your thoughts on the movies themes of transitioning or at least have some sort of acknowledgement that the movie is very much about that
I found tv glow so bad

Kingdom of the apes(the actual title is too fucking long) was just a meh movie, not bad, not amazing, just meh, boring, mediocre

And he names all the movies that came out that month and says that he didn't watch it.
He should do this on april fools
haha! i’m imagining that!!!
it would be really hard for someone who watches a lot of stuff to not wach anything in a month
That would be funny I think

For me, last month was Mother's May. I watched The Mother (2023), Mother (2020), Mother (2009), Mommie Dearest, Mother! (2017), Mother/Android, Mommy (2014), Petite Maman, Mama (2013), All About My Mother, Parallel Mothers, Ma ma (2015), and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
what about Ma?
How was Petite Maman?
Ill never forget the baby scene in Mother! (2017)
@@Arawn505 Petite Maman was pretty good. Cute, short, and simple, but effective. I rank it as 3rd out of the selection. All About My Mother takes silver. Mommy (2014) was a surprising masterpiece and the best of the month. But if you want a movie that's family-friendly and won't stress you to death, Petite Maman is the recommendation.
@Qegixar how was the experience? care to share your thoughts?
TV glow personally is a dream movie for me idk how to explain I’m just glad it exists
Yeah, even though he kinda raves, limiting it to a "movie about nostalgia" is so wrong
I heavily recommend watching Hundreds of Beavers, it’s a genuinely brilliant comedy and very visually impressive as hell. A live action looney tunes with crappy animal costumes and plush gore.
I second that, 100% recommend.

This channel could just be "What I watched in _____" videos, and I would be happy.
PSH as Freddie is so good!! The second he comes on screen he's just giving so much character. You know who that guy is and hate him immediately. I love both Ripley and The Talented. Worthy Highsmith adaptations make me so happy! "Ripley" really honoured her simple writing style. BTW, Fincher's doing a Strangers on the Train adaptation! So awesome!
I was so excited to watch Ghostlight from the description then realized it isn’t out yet, you have to make it clear if you saw something early😭
So relieved that you liked The Talented Mr Ripley. It's one of my favourite movies of all time.
If you live in Florida, my podcast is hosting a 25th anniversary special presentation.
Ah, I prefer Matt Damon Ripley because he is just some fuckin nerd you would absolutely not take seriously and would let your guard down around him...Andrew Scott is sinister from the first look...would not trust the guy.
Please watch Hundreds of Beavers. You will love it!
Karsten and cosmonaut in the same day??!!!
I had never heard of The Swimmer until I saw that you watched it on Letterboxd, watched it the other night and have found a new all-time favorite. What an incredibly strange, ridiculous, disturbing, silly, hilarious, nightmarish time. Highly recommend to anyone who doesn’t already trust Karsten’s word on this one.
Another all-time favorite I just watched for the first time was The Third Man, which I’d always heard was a noir classic but never knew was actually hilarious and bizarre? The entirely zither-based soundtrack? The over-abundance of Dutch angles that somehow always work? Orson Welles somehow being a creep and a ham at the same time? That incredible, hysterical last shot working as a complete inversion of the typical Hollywood ending? Absolutely amazing
1 view 35 seconds??
Bro fell off:(
Hey do you think you can rank all of the Denis Villeneuve movies?
I’ll be honest, I didn’t feel that Kingdom was “sleepy.” Long sure, but the people saying it was too slow… interesting me.
Like I just got out of Furiosa, that genuinely felt slower (or at least, more noticeably draggy).
love you karst

The Swimmer short story is one of my all time favorites, uses tone and imagery so well to give you a look into the protagonist's inner turmoil
I watched a variety of things:

I Saw the TV Glow
Spider-Man: Homecoming (rewatch)
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (twice)
Mad Max: Fury Road (rewatch)
Stop Making Sense
Us Again (Disney short)
I watched The Swimmer last year and I remember thinking it was so interesting because, on the one hand, it’s a surrealist fantasy where a guy swims through time via various pools, but, on the other, it use the physical reality of how it would actually feel (warm sun, then colder and clammier, etc.) if he really somehow did it.

Hi Martin Roast
I feel like I’m the only person who really didn’t like Challengers. Great performances, cinematography, music, etc., but the script… Was I supposed to feel a certain way at the end?
glad to see you are finally entering your australian movies era. may i suggest you pair mad max with wake in fright, wolf creek and crocodile dundee for a study of the looming spectre of australian masculinity. then, a course of femininity in nature: picnic at hanging rock, the nightinggale, dot and the kangaroo. cheers
Ripley's ending montage was next level
You watched more movies this May than me in 3 years
I just don't get why people like World's Fair, nothing from it worked for me, I wish I could understand
I wanted so bad to love challengers since I love Luca and I was a college tennis player, but the tennis scenes were pretty tough to watch. Still solid but bottom tier Luca for me.

Ripley sucked. It was pretty but it lacked all the charm and suspense of the original.
By the original do you mean the book? Or do you mean the film?
