i’ve been wailing into the void of the comments about the bear for months now so to see it in the thumbnail… it was like taking my first real breath in ages. thank you, mr runquist; thank you.
Fun fact, Speed racer (4:35) was a movie created in the transition from Film to Digital capture, it was shot digitally, but most theatres still projected it on celluloid, and unfortunately, because of just how bright and colourful it looked, the intermediate process when transferring it from digital back onto a 35mm film strips for projection broke all of it's colours. The colour team spent almost 3 months working on a conversion LUT/matrix that would transfer the intended colour of the film onto a film strip and although they got close, they never fully succeeded, meaning this is one of the first films ever created which focused on it's digital projection and DVD/Streaming look more than it's film print/cinema release.
Fun fact for project nim. My supervisor at uni was in Prof Terraces lab when the documentary came out. He went to the premiere, and the documentary was the big reveal that Terrace had been sleeping with his students to the wider faculty. Apparently he walked into the premiere star of the show with everyone fawning over him, and when they walked out no one would catch his eye or say a word to him
Honestly the monkey Mondays challenge is amazing and has made me add a lot unique movies to my watch list that I would’ve never seen otherwise. Excited to see what next years wacky weekly challenge will be.
SO stoked the Beast resonated with you! I stumbled out of the theater. No film recently has made me ask so many questions about fate, humanity and circumstance. About the choices you made and more importantly the choices you didn't. Is emotion worth sacrificing for serenity? Is our humanity defined by our experiences or are we merely slaves to ego? Did I have a beautiful pianist girlfriend in 1910? Will I become an axe-murderer in 2078? At the end of it all I thought the films biggest message was to live in the moment. Incredible film.
If he’s already picking up on the subtleties and sheer density of the show in the first few eps his mind will be blown by the end. We need a 1 hour sopranos analysis!!
It’s such a beautiful day, the cranes are flying, Moscow doesn’t believe in tears, White sun of the desert, Ali: fear eats the soul, paper moon, and love exposure. Those were the main ones
I'm really surprised you didn't like quiet place. It didn't change my life or anything but I thought it was really enjoyable and had some really solid dynamics with lupita and Joseph's characters
@@Xz_9821 I'd say it's also about learning accept the inevitability of death by embracing human connection and cherishing the simple joys of life. It's not super complicated. It's a straightforward story that expands the worldbuilding of the franchise. Not great, but decent.

I’ve been binging Succession the whole month and it’s absolutely amazing. I’m not done yet but this is becoming my favorite show of all time. And I started watching Sopranos too!
Speed Racer is crazy good. Rewatched it last month as well. I love the transitions between shots and how they evolve throughout the film. I love how the backgrounds have this collage feel in some race scenes, like the sand dunes parallax twisting or whatever you want to call it. I like how much charisma most characters have, especially the family. John Goodman is the best movie dad. I liked the anti-corpo theme, or to be more precise, how a movie about racing turns into "art vs business". I liked the monkey too, of course. Great film. Don't let mediocre scores make you skip it.
Still want to watch this, seems interesting and from everything I’ve heard the Wachowski sisters almost always deliver (or always depending on who you ask)
@@caseys2698 Do it 😁. I've been going through Wachowskis' filmography this year. With two movies left, I think Speed Racer is my second favourite film directed by them only behind The Matrix. 1. Here's what I watched:- Godzilla Minus One (9/10) - _One of the few movies in recent memory that absolutely lived up to its hype. Godzilla is an actually terrifying beast in this movie and to top it all off the human characters are endearing and you actually feel invested in their story. Hands down the best Godzilla movie of all time._ Dune: Part One (8/10) - _Despite well directed, it was a frustrating watch for me mainly the first hour which is mostly just exposition and the pacing doesn't get better until the Harkonnen invasion happens and even after that the movie just kind of ends without much happening. I think the problem is the fact that it's all just a set-up, a good kinda set-up mind you and having seen the sequel the set-up definitely paid off but on its own Part One just acts as a base to make Part Two bloom unlike Fellowship of the Ring for instance which keeps you invested for more but also works as a standalone feature. That said, where the movie truly shines is on its technical prowess and Villeneuve's direction. I still remember the time when Dune was considered 'unadaptable' which makes sense since the novel was ahead of its time but thanks to Denis Villeneuve's vision this adaptation definitely lives up to its source material and he deserves all the praise for that. Hans Zimmer score is great as usual._ Dune: Part Two (9/10) - _I still have my issues with the pacing of the first movie but I'm also glad it took it's time in the build-up. This sequel was everything I hoped it would be and more. Timothee Chalamet was good in the first movie but here he had such an amazing screen presence. Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem and Austin Butler are standouts and also loved the changes that Villeneuve made with Chani in the movie. Such an amazing movie all around and unlike Part One, Part Two keeps you invested for more all while standing its own ground._ The Bear, Season 3 (8.5/10) - _I know people are not loving this season but to me it felt like a natural progression of the story. Episode 1 was such an unique episode, it felt more like diving into Carmy's memory lane and the score too kept lingering and repeating almost as if I'm dreaming, basically it felt different and I loved it. Also loved Tina's backstory episode even tho it came out of nowhere and could've easily been inserted in earlier seasons. Episode 8 was wholesome Sugar finally reconciling with her abusive mother and sharing a moment together while eating ice chips just too good honestly. I do understand the critisism however with all these great moments this season felt a little stagnant overall, it lacked the tension of previous seasons and there's a bit too much of Faks comedy but then again I love these characters so much that I can just see them have an ordinary day and still have a good time. Overall season 3 was definitely weaker than the first two but its still great nonetheless._ The Boys, Season 4, Episodes 1-5 (7.5/10) - _Yet another series that is getting alot of mixed responses lately and again I mostly disagree with that. The first 3 episodes were decent overall and doesn't really do much other than being a fun watch but episode 4 is honestly one of the best episodes of the entire show with some seriously good acting from Anthony Starr. I do think the plot is just stretching itself too thin at this point where every season basically feels the same and season 4 is no different._ House of the Dragon, Season 2, Episodes 1-3 (7.5/10) - _So far it's just alot of build-up and it really has that 'calm before the storm' kinda vibe. I'd say my only issue so far with this season in particular is that the writers are clearly showing the greens in a more villainous way than the blacks. Part of what made the books and season 1 so good is that every character is morally grey it splits the readers/viewers mindset and makes them think on the action that every character does good or bad. It's still too early in the season to really form a perspective on it so only time will tell._
I think Kinds of Kindness was the best film I watched this month. Yorgos continues to find unique ways to push the envelope and remains one of the most exciting filmmakers working today.
Did my first full Scavengers Reign rewatch with it now being on Netflix and it somehow got even better, it absolutely kills me that it’s not in the top spot at Netflix but that’s probably because they got that whole slew of max content at the same time so it went kinda under the radar, please anyone who sees this, watch scavengers reign, watch it like 8 times, give it the attention it so desperately deserves
Inside Out 2 was better than I expected but it definitely could have expanded more on each of the emotions part, they are probably doing a 3rd movie after the success of this one so maybe we will get more of a heavy story like the first film.
Watched Secret of Kells last year and is definitely one of the most unique animated movies I’ve ever seen. And I’ve been wanting to rewatch it lately. I’m glad you talked about it on this video because I was curious about your thoughts when I saw you log it on Letterboxd
purple noon will always be my favorite adaptation of the book, i think it takes a very similar yet some how different approach to the story, and unlike in the other movies i think Alains way of playing tom gives us a more "charming" tom in the beginning and as the movie continues he become quietly psychotic
THE BEAST IS MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF THE YEAR SO FAR! I remember half way through the movie I turned stopped and looked around the theater to make sure I wasn't being punked. When the movie ended everyone and I mean EVERYONE, left the theater with no clue what had just happened.
Because of this video, I went to go see Hundreds of Beavers opening night (for the UK afaik) and I'm so glad I did, I absolutely loved it! Probably the funniest and definitely the silliest film I've seen in theatres in a LONG time
I hope this video inspires more people to watch The Beast. Definitely one of the best things I've seen this year, and god what a soul crushing ending. I feel like I need to rewatch it and I only watched it like a week ago.
Doing this for the first time ig: - Schindler's List (9/10) - Minari (rewatch) (8/10) - The Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part One (5/10) (mid) - Paris, Texas (9/10) (so fucking good, shoutout to that one) - The Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part Two (6/10) (😂) - The Northman (8/10) - Million Dollar Baby (7/10) - To Kill a Mockingbird (7/10) - The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (6/10) (why) - Ex-Machina (8/10) Also you finally watched the bear thank god
I watched Boyhood for the first time. This is a movie that I have been wanting to watch ever since I was starting to get into movies. Truly is like an epic, not the movie I was expecting. The flow of the movie felt transitionless. It feel like you are going back through all of your yearbooks. 100% recommend.
I watched Dark Matter on AppleTV+ and it’s my favourite show I’ve seen all year. Really gripping and mindbending scifi that had me glued to my seat and gasping on several occasions. Highly recommend!
Cheaper by the Dozen 2 getting some love, love to see it Karsten! Enjoy the Sopranos, just watched that for the first time and it is probably the best tv show ever. Love the videos dude keep up the great work!
Very glad you started the Sopranos. I've rewatched the entire series 9 times, it's almost like a comfort show. You can throw on any episode (except Employee of the Month)
Ironically I only finished it for the first time in June and Employee of the Month is a great episode but has one of the hardest scenes to watch in tv for me. If ever rewatch it’ll definitely be the one I’m least excited to watch again.
this month i’ve watched the lego batman movie, hundreds of beavers, inside out 2, boy kills world, walk hard: the dewey cox story, the social network, whiplash, and rewatched nobody
Karsten mentioned watching better call saul after succession ended and we are still waiting. This guy hasnt even experienced the epic highs and lows of chicanery.
Hi Karsten would love to hear your thoughts on Joyland. It's Pakistan's first and only queer film and it's really worth watching especially considering that Pakistani film industry isn't doing well so an art house film that is all around competent is quite impressive.

I have recently rewatched Fimfárum Jana Wericha. Its a Czech marionette/animated movie based on a book. Last time I have seen it was when I was a child and it was sooo worth rewatching Now! Its so strange and beautiful and... You would have to see it for yourself. I have no idea if it has EN dubing but there will for sure be subtitles somewhere. If you are up for a foreign obscure movie then I can only reccomend
i love how when he’s talking about inside out 2, he says “it goes down the route you’d expect it to go down when talking about a middle schooler going through their emotions for the first time, but it does it in an unexpected way” so it was predictable but unexpectedly predictable? just thought that was funny, no hate.

Over the last couple days in June (and a bit into July) I watched the Dark Knight trilogy for the first time, as well as The Batman. Also rewatched Fantastic mr fox for the first time since I was a kid
okay so heres the thing about the Arrival score. the final scene, with that one song that you probably are referring to making you cry, is NOT written by the composer of the film. it's written by a man named Max Richter, a German composer who is fucking amazing. he has written some scores, like one for an episode of black mirror, the leftovers, and some films, but he is definitively not a film composer - he just does film scores sometimes. the song is called "On the Nature of Daylight". unless its the score in the other scenes - which is brilliantly experimental, but probably not something you would cry to. check Max Richter out. you won't be dissapointed.
No country for old men,the breakfest club, a quiet place day one, shutter island, taxi driver, Fargo, inside out 2, rewatched the Godfather and I watched the entire lotr of the rings trilogy. My letterbox is The Don. Please check it out.
- Furiosa: a Mad Max Saga: 4.5/5 - Memoir of a Snail (world premiere at Annecy Festival): 4.5/5 - The Day the Earth Blew Up: a Looney Tunes Movie (also world premiere at Annecy): 3.5/5 - Gill (also at Annecy Festival): 1.5/5 - Servais (documentary, also at Annecy): 3.5/5 - The Imaginary (Annecy): 3.5/5 - A Trip to the Moon (rewatch, restored color version): 4.5/5 - Dream Scenario: 4/5 Also plenty of great short movies at Annecy Festival, with a big shout out to the grand winner of this year's edition, Percebes, directed by my friends Alexandra Ramires and Laura Gonçalves.
Gonna heavily disagree with you on a quiet place day one. It added lore, follows a character that literally has nothing to lose, and some pretty great thrilling sequences. It's not a perfect movie by any means, and everyone can have their opinion on a film obviously, but I found it to be a great theater experience, and found myself emotional quite a few times.
- A Thousand and One - Bad Boys 1-4 - The Bear Seasons 1 & 2 - Challengers - Close Encounters of the Third Kind (HIGHLY RECOMMEND since it has rerelease in July) - Crimes of the Future - Hitman - The Hunger Games 1 & 2 - Inside Out - The Lobster - Mad Max 1-4 + Furiosa - Marcel the Shell - The Martian - The Muppet Movie - Nausicaa - Punch Drunk Love - Swiss Army Man - Thelma & Louise - Three Thousand Years of Longing !!!
I had quite a good month in film watching to be honest: - The Zone of Interest - The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - The Boat that Rocked (my top pick) - First Reformed - The Rock - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas -The French Connection - Evil Dead 2
I saw: -Fallen Angels -Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas -Mistress America -The Fisher King -Necktie -White Noise -Mad Max Fury Road -Mad Max 2 -The Human Voice -Dazed and Confused -Cinema Paradiso -Marriage Story -Next Floor -Autumn Sonata - My Neighbors the Yamadas - Licorice Pizza - Big Take - Exposed - Unfrosted - North By Northwest - Furiosa - Hit Man - To Live and Die In LA -Vertigo - Little Miss Sunshine - A Quiet Place Day One - Rio Lobo - The Sympathizer - The Bear - Kwaidan

Watched Secret of Kells last year and is definitely one of the most unique animated movies I’ve ever seen. And I’ve been wanting to rewatch it lately. I’m glad you talked about it on this video because I was curious about your thoughts when I saw you log it on Letterboxd
i watched speed racer with my brother and it was the best drug trip i've ever experienced, its so stupid but i absolutely adore it
purple noon will always be my favorite adaptation of the book, i think it takes a very similar yet some how different approach to the story, and unlike in the other movies i think Alains way of playing tom gives us a more "charming" tom in the beginning and as the movie continues he become quietly psychotic
Kartsten I’m so glad you mentioned speed racer. My favorite movie!
I cant begin to explain to you how happy i felt when i saw you watched Speed Racer. Love you Karsten
Because of this video, I went to go see Hundreds of Beavers opening night (for the UK afaik) and I'm so glad I did, I absolutely loved it! Probably the funniest and definitely the silliest film I've seen in theatres in a LONG time
With The Sopranos, my guess is you haven’t watched College yet… you’ll be loving it after that episode.
excited for the bear video, also started the soprannos this month except I'm almost done with it!
I hope this video inspires more people to watch The Beast. Definitely one of the best things I've seen this year, and god what a soul crushing ending. I feel like I need to rewatch it and I only watched it like a week ago.
Hundreds of beavers is so incredibly underrated. It should be regarded as an instant comedic classic.
Doing this for the first time ig:
- Schindler's List (9/10)
- Minari (rewatch) (8/10)
- The Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part One (5/10) (mid)
- Paris, Texas (9/10) (so fucking good, shoutout to that one)
- The Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part Two (6/10) (😂)
- The Northman (8/10)
- Million Dollar Baby (7/10)
- To Kill a Mockingbird (7/10)
- The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (6/10) (why)
- Ex-Machina (8/10)
Also you finally watched the bear thank god
Social cues such a good song, just found it yesterday actually
@@Tyler12905 Social cues is a masterpiece
Out of curiosity, what would it take for you to give a movie a 10/10 and why is Schindler's List not one ?
Paris, Texas is one of my all-time favourites. Totally absorbing
watched 15 films this month my favourite was pirates of the Caribbean live in concert with an orchestra, preforming the score.
Omg glad im watching The Sopranos around the same time as you! Cant wait to hear what you think
I watched Boyhood for the first time. This is a movie that I have been wanting to watch ever since I was starting to get into movies. Truly is like an epic, not the movie I was expecting. The flow of the movie felt transitionless. It feel like you are going back through all of your yearbooks. 100% recommend.
One of my favourite film
The thing I was looking forward to all month long is finally here! ❤
this month i’ve watched the lego batman movie, hundreds of beavers, inside out 2, boy kills world, walk hard: the dewey cox story, the social network, whiplash, and rewatched nobody
Karsten mentioned watching better call saul after succession ended and we are still waiting. This guy hasnt even experienced the epic highs and lows of chicanery.
absolutely agree on every front with The Beast. so glad you watched it and enjoyed it
Hi Karsten would love to hear your thoughts on Joyland. It's Pakistan's first and only queer film and it's really worth watching especially considering that Pakistani film industry isn't doing well so an art house film that is all around competent is quite impressive.

Yo Karsten! Digging the music in this one!!!
Hundreds of Beavers is a perfect masterpiece that I can watch 50 times and it'll still make me laugh
Heatwaves have fried karst’s critical brain. Everything is so positive in this one
I watched Scary Movie 4 and Poor Things, and I started Vinland Saga. Yeah, wild selection of art.
Nice to hear your thoughts on The Beast Karst, I thought it was a very special piece of work. Can’t wait for a rewatch (imma wait for the alleged Janus/Criterion bluray)
youre gonna LOVE the rest of the sopranos dude!!!
I love and hate these videos because I get to find out about amazing movies, but I have to add so much more to my letterboxd watchlist
I’m glad you watched Inside Out 2 in theaters 50 times to show Disney that they need to make more sequels! Thanks Karsten!
Convincing Karsten to watch Elektra (2005) before Deadpool and Wolverine comes out next month
congratulations you're a prophet.
i love how when he’s talking about inside out 2, he says “it goes down the route you’d expect it to go down when talking about a middle schooler going through their emotions for the first time, but it does it in an unexpected way” so it was predictable but unexpectedly predictable? just thought that was funny, no hate.
I actually had a really… interesting(?) month. This list won’t include rewatches cause I’m too lazy to actually log everything on letterboxd:
Flatliners (90’): 6/10
When Harry Met Sally: 9/10

The Young Girls of Rochefort: 9/10
Funny Games (97’): 7/10

Inglorious Basterds: 6/10
Touki Bouki: 9/10

Parenthood is one of Martin's best. Awesome 90s movie.
Just finished the sopranos season 3 and it might be one of the best seasons of television I have seen
I watched Janet Planet and it was the perfect thoughtful tender coming of age movie for a strange summer night!
Wake up, babe. New karsten "what I watched" just dropped.
it’s been a while since i watched your videos aandd i miss the mubi add
I've been hoping you would do a "The Bear" video for two years! YES PLEASE!
I rewatched over a dozen Pixar films and also 'It Happened One Night' for the first time.
I watched Godzilla minus one not in 4dx and in was genuinely my favorite theater experience ever
Hundreds of Beavers is incredible. I hope they are offering big $$ to those guys for their next projects.
I hope to see a video on The Bear. One of my favorite shows in a long time
you’re so committed to monkey monday i’m impressed
Just rewatched "The Dangerous Lives of the Altar Boys". If you're plannng to do a coming-of-age-monday it should be on your list! Cheers!
Dude I think we were on the same wavelength for Edward Scissorhands this month
Over the last couple days in June (and a bit into July) I watched the Dark Knight trilogy for the first time, as well as The Batman. Also rewatched Fantastic mr fox for the first time since I was a kid
SPEED RACER TAKEOVER BABY WE ARE SO UP
okay so heres the thing about the Arrival score.
the final scene, with that one song that you probably are referring to making you cry, is NOT written by the composer of the film. it's written by a man named Max Richter, a German composer who is fucking amazing. he has written some scores, like one for an episode of black mirror, the leftovers, and some films, but he is definitively not a film composer - he just does film scores sometimes. the song is called "On the Nature of Daylight".
unless its the score in the other scenes - which is brilliantly experimental, but probably not something you would cry to.
check Max Richter out. you won't be dissapointed.
No country for old men,the breakfest club, a quiet place day one, shutter island, taxi driver, Fargo, inside out 2, rewatched the Godfather and I watched the entire lotr of the rings trilogy. My letterbox is The Don. Please check it out.
- Furiosa: a Mad Max Saga: 4.5/5
- Memoir of a Snail (world premiere at Annecy Festival): 4.5/5
- The Day the Earth Blew Up: a Looney Tunes Movie (also world premiere at Annecy): 3.5/5
- Gill (also at Annecy Festival): 1.5/5
- Servais (documentary, also at Annecy): 3.5/5
- The Imaginary (Annecy): 3.5/5
- A Trip to the Moon (rewatch, restored color version): 4.5/5
- Dream Scenario: 4/5
Also plenty of great short movies at Annecy Festival, with a big shout out to the grand winner of this year's edition, Percebes, directed by my friends Alexandra Ramires and Laura Gonçalves.
Of course we care about a possible standalone video on The Bear. What a rhetorical question.
They should make a movie of just Lea Seydoux dancing in clubs. Those were the best parts of The Beast lol
Seeing the Sopranos in the thumbnail made me so mother fucking happy
Gonna heavily disagree with you on a quiet place day one. It added lore, follows a character that literally has nothing to lose, and some pretty great thrilling sequences. It's not a perfect movie by any means, and everyone can have their opinion on a film obviously, but I found it to be a great theater experience, and found myself emotional quite a few times.
i started watch the sopranos for the first time in june too!
- A Thousand and One

Looking back at my June diary, it looks like I started with Blithe Spirit (1945), and ended with Brief Encounter (1946). Both directed by David Lean!

- The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
- The Boat that Rocked (my top pick)
- First Reformed
- The Rock
- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
-The French Connection
- Evil Dead 2
I rewatched Beverly Hills Chihuahua for the first time in over a decade. I was in tears. That movie is not real.
Speed racer love, it’s a great day
