the best depiction of depression on film is by far is Angel's Melancholy (2009), a German film which inspired Lars Von Trier's Melancholia (2011). The director still won't reveal his identity, because of the content of his films, but they are as emotionally raw as it gets imo. David Hess from Wes Craven's Last house on the left also did the soundtrack if that means anything.
For some reason i expected this to be your favorite movie of the year at that age; so i was very shocked to see Taste of Cherry was your favorite movie as an infant 😂
@@nl3064 my favorite movies from every year I’ve been alive? I read it as their favorite movie that year and instead it was their favorite movie that came out that year.

The thumbnail implies we are currently in 2009 and time will only continue to increase in speed as the years go by. I think that's really brave of Karsten.

Finally, thank you for giving NOPE the credit it most definitely deserves, easily the best of 2022. There's so many things to be taken away from it but on my latest viewing I just can't ignore how brilliantly the film critiques the film industry, both acknowledging its flaws but also showcasing a real genuine love and passion for the craft that comes through not just in the story but every aspect of the production. It breathes life and love for filmmaking, acts as this massive genre defying epic ode, and feels like an incredibly important sentiment for where the film industry is at today and that's just one piece of this incredible collaborative effort.

I'm 28 and you're two movies from 2004 gave me so much joy as my brothers used to watch both those movies over and over on our car's dvd player. Glad other people loved those movies as much as we did.
Yes, 2005 looks pretty grim on first glance, but there are some real sleepers there: "A History of Violence" is a true under-the-radar masterpiece where Cronenberg gets the complex interactions between violence, sex and family perfectly right for once - by taking it out of his usually more outlandish premises and putting it squarely into heartland American everyday life. "Brokeback Mountain" and "Good Night. And Good Luck" are also veritable candidates, and there are even some out-of-the-way black horse picks like "Kung Fu Hustle" if you want to get real weird, or Rian Johnson's amazing debut "Brick", which to me still has the "most-movie-to-budget" ratio of all time.
@@PokeBlox21 usually, student films and no or low budget movies feel like half a film, at least to me. Post-production elements seem unfinished or half-hearted, acting and lighting can be a bit dubious, but what contributes most to this feeling is a lack of refinement or coherence of vision. They don’t feel fully formed, which is totally understandable when you account for their production conditions. “Brick” feels like the director had the least amount of financial or reputational capital to spend and got the “most movie” out of it. You are highlighting some impressive debuts in your video, and in my opinion, this is one of the best debuts for the ages.

One of my favorite things is when a movie is so good, the watchers protect the movie when recommending it to others. When 'Parasite' came out, we all said "just watch it".
2005 was an insane year!! House of Flying Daggers/ Troy/ Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire/ Star Wars: Episode III/ The Chronicles of Narnia/ Kingdom of Heaven/ Sin City/ Lord of War/ Oliver Twist/ Constantine. These movies are all exceptional!

Look, I love that you put Minecraft music under the images of Climax. That's some good stuff. Also, 2019, Portrait de la jeune fille en feu. No question.
Moonlight is also the movie that made me love movies. I think it probably had that effect on a lot of people too. Something about it is so visceral that it doesn't even feel like a film.
Maybe it’s just me being a big rom com y2k Natalie Portman fan, but 2004 Garden State by Zach Braff, BOI I’ve never seen u talk on it and maybe I’m scared u do, but I enjoyed it way too much!! Also the soundtrack woahhhh

I've got tickets to see _It's Such A Beautiful Day_ on a big screen - alongside Don's new short, _ME_ - and I am so ready to cry in a crowd you have no idea
I got the gift of seeing Oldboy not knowing anything about it and seeing it in a theater. I knew there was a "twist' but I did *not* know what it was. It was a phenomenal experience and I recommend people see it with as many people as they can. Also, controversial opinion, I think Oldboy gets funnier the more times you see it. I laughed so many times on my second watch of it.

Oooohh please talk to me about the movie Nope ! Nope is so good and the performance of Keke Palmer had gotta be one of the best performances of the 2020s thus far and pretty much in the history of cinema !
Once I saw a post or whatever that said “the tagline of the number one movie at the box office on the day you were born describes your life”. the best depiction of depression on film is by far is Angel's Melancholy (2009), a German film which inspired Lars Von Trier's Melancholia (2011).
You weren't the only one, I was waiting all video for the punchline!
Why...the hell...would you expect it that way...?
@@nl3064 my favorite movies from every year I’ve been alive? I read it as their favorite movie that year and instead it was their favorite movie that came out that year.

my favorite line is def “IT’S LEMON SCENTED!!!”
Undeniably GOATed movie
From Karsten's own review:
"I see no reason why this movie doesn't deserve 5 stars"
WE’RE ON A BABY HUNT AND DON’T THINK WE DON’T KNOW HOW TO WEEEEEEEEEED EM OUT
“What’ll it be fellas…
MUSTARD OR KETCHUP”

Karsten sure does knows how to make cursed thumbnails
I like this guy, but he might be a narcissist. Most his channel videos are about himself
@@neutraltoxic No way!, he makes videos about himself in his OWN channel!
The one for 'Tier Ranking My Favorite Movies' haha
@@neutraltoxic He doesn't strike me as narcissistic, he just has a personal approach to his videos. That's what I like about them, I think it's fun how he talks about movies, hearing his opinions.

The thumbnail implies we are currently in 2009 and time will only continue to increase in speed as the years go by. I think that's really brave of Karsten.

Fury Road is 2015: You're freaking right it is.
He gives the traditional, more conventional answer for 2005, but then at 11:12 hints at his _actual_ favorite of that year. Love that.
Thank you! Im watching all of them
My personal guess is that his 2024 favourite is going to be The Substance if he watched it.

Punch Drunk Love is seriously slept on, and along with Reign over Me, shows that Adam Sandler can convincingly pull off comedy.
Is uncut gems a comedy?
Grown Ups proved to the world that Adam Sandler can pull off comedy.

Great list, man!
Can't wait in 20 years or so to have a sequel tothis video
Finally, thank you for giving NOPE the credit it most definitely deserves, easily the best of 2022. There's so many things to be taken away from it but on my latest viewing I just can't ignore how brilliantly the film critiques the film industry, both acknowledging its flaws but also showcasing a real genuine love and passion for the craft that comes through not just in the story but every aspect of the production. It breathes life and love for filmmaking, acts as this massive genre defying epic ode, and feels like an incredibly important sentiment for where the film industry is at today and that's just one piece of this incredible collaborative effort.
Before watching the video I’ll make my own

Could you explain what you mean by "movie-to-budget" ratio? Thanks for the recommendations btw
Still, even with that in mind 2005 is very low in the ranking. 2011 is also not that great.
@@TylerDurden-td2yg I agree, 2005 isn't going to be banner year anytime soon.

Episode 3 is not good... Pretty much just a year for mediocre blockbuster films
@@unrealistic5462 Well I thought it was a great movie as a 7 year old watching it in the cinema with my family. Me and my brother loved the movie, Great times! Even if you don't like star wars, movies like House of Flying Daggers, Troy, Constantine were INSANE and still hold up to this day. 2005 was a insane year (in my taste of movie)
Brokeback Mountain is great too

I know you’re being sarcastic but I watched Flubber for the first time in probably a decade and I really enjoyed it. The moment I clicked Play, I randomly thought, “wait, what if this is one of those movies you rewatch as an adult because you really liked it as a child but you end up finding it kind of boring now?” but no, it’s just fun and wholesome and cute.

Moonlight is also the movie that made me love movies. I think it probably had that effect on a lot of people too. Something about it is so visceral that it doesn't even feel like a film.
YES!!! The Heartbreak Kid is one of the greatest comedies ever made!!!

For me, that’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - “something wicked this way comes”. You can’t make this up... I say that because wow how is it so accurate
For me- Final Destination 3: "This ride will be the death of you"
damn that's a sick tagline, especially because I love cars/racing
The Mummy for me: "The sands will rise. The heavens will part. The power will be unleashed." So I must be pretty damn mighty I guess.
