  • The Shiner strategy behind attacking the hands. Please keep in mind that it is not my desire that others do this, it is simply a demonstrated record of the things that I have learned while mastering the Irish weapon .

I have been told that they are images from Talhoffer's works. Where the image comes from is not as important as the point being made about "slipping" the weapon . In the German style this would be similar to a "Nachreisen" (to travel back)

The oldest known shillelagh is about 5000 years old. These modern things look more like hockey-sticks but that is because they made it into a sport. The shillelagh was used for thousands of years in Ireland, the shillelagh walking-stick is a disguised weapon, not a cane that can be used for fighting. Try Francis McCaffrey, he makes them and he knows a lot about the history of shillelaghs.

All stick fighting systems have things in common and some completely foreign aspects. All in all- nothing about stick in hand fro defense sounds poorly, unless you are at a distance from an expert firearms person or a sub-machine gun! All in all, look at commonalities and work on those- these universal truths- being hit by a heavy stick or a light stick hurts like hell and can kill you! Don't be an ass and start saying one is better than another as they all have weaknesses and strengths.
